Als erster Staatssekretär des 1949 gegründeten Bundesministeriums der Justiz war Walter Strauß maßgeblich für dessen personellen Aufbau verantwortlich. Während seiner Amtszeit, die erst 1963 endete, diente Strauß unter fünf verschiedenen Ministern. Damit verkörperte er die Kontinuität der Arbeit und galt nicht von ungefähr als der eigentliche 'Herrscher der Rosenburg', dem Bonner Amtssitz des Ministeriums. Durch seinen Führungsstil, der die Forderung nach Qualität mit einem geradezu paternalistischen Verantwortungsgefühl verband, prägte der Gründungsstaatssekretär den Geist des Hauses für lange Zeit. Obwohl er jüdischer Herkunft war und im Nationalsozialismus zum Kreis der rassisch Verfolgten gehört hatte, griff Strauß bei der Auswahl des Personals allerdings in hohem Maße auf die Mitarbeit von Personen zurück, die durch ihre Tätigkeit im 'Dritten Reich' belastet waren. Warum dies so war, sucht der Autor nicht nur anhand biografischer Prägungen, die Strauß im Kaiserreich, in der Weimarer Republik, dem Nationalsozialismus und der Besatzungszeit erfahren hatte, sondern auch durch eine umfassende Darstellung der wesentlichen Merkmale und Kennzeichen seiner Personalpolitik zu ergründen: Wie weit reichte sein Einfluss Welche Rolle spielte er bei Auswahl und Beförderungen, in erster Linie der Beamten des höheren Dienstes, in Abgrenzung zu anderen Akteuren Und in welchem Maße war er bei seinen Entscheidungen durch institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen eingeschränkt 366 pp
Berliner Kunstmatronage

Um 1900 sammelten und förderten zahlreiche Berlinerinnen bildende Kunst. Mit ihrer Betrachtung dieser Kunstmatronage lässt Anna-Carolin Augustin eine kaum noch bekannte Facette der Kunststadtmetropole Berlin aufscheinen.
Um 1900 legten zahlreiche Frauen in Berlin Kunstsammlungen an, förderten Kunstschaffende und verschiedene Kunststile. Das Repertoire reichte von
Van-Gogh-Gemälden über japanische Farbholzschnitte bis hin zu Volkskunst-Objekten. Damit leisteten die Frauen einen wichtigen und heute nahezu unbekannten Beitrag zur Genese der Kunstmetropole Berlin.
Anna-Carolin Augustin widmet sich diesem Thema an der Schnittstelle von Kunstgeschichte, Elitengeschichte, Geschlechtergeschichte und Jüdischer Geschichte. Anhand von Archivalien, Zeitschriften, Briefwechseln und Tagebüchern breitet sie ein Panorama von Berliner Frauenbiographien, Kunstsammlungen und -stiftungen aus und analysiert die Motive und Funktionen der Kunstmatronage sozial- und kulturhistorisch. So werden parallel die Geschichten von Protagonistinnen mit ganz unterschiedlichen Interessen erzählt; ihre Kunstmatronage war etwa vom Glauben an Emanzipation durch Kunst getragen, stand im Dienst der kulturellen Interessen des imperialistischen Kaiserreiches oder war von individuellem Distinktionsstreben geprägt. Zeitgenossen betrachteten diese Frauen als Mitstreiterinnen oder lukrative Konsumentinnen, häufiger jedoch begegneten sie ihnen mit Abwehr, die mitunter antifeministische und antisemitische Stereotype vereinte.

In Gelehrte – Republik – Gelehrtenrepublik untersucht Marc Banditt die Eigenheiten aufklärerischer Tendenzen der Stadt Danzig. Deren Nukleus bildete die zur Jahreswende 1742/43 gegründete Naturforschende Gesellschaft, einer der am längsten existierenden privaten Zusammenschlüsse auf diesem Gebiet. Der strukturelle Wandel dieser Sozietät in den ersten knapp 80 Jahren ihres Bestehens wird dabei als die Summe einer Vielzahl von ineinandergreifenden Entwicklungssträngen verstanden, die die voranschreitende gesellschaftliche Durchdringung der Aufklärungsideen und -inhalte im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts kennzeichneten. Trotz der Kräfteverschiebungen in Nordosteuropa, die in Gestalt der Teilungen Polen-Litauens der autonomen Stellung der Hansestadt im Jahr 1793 ein Ende bereiteten, offenbart sich, dass die Geschichte des Danziger Naturforscherzirkels mehr Kontinuitäten als Brüche aufweist. Sowohl auf lokaler als auch auf transregionaler Ebene generierte sich die Vereinigung als eine elementare Schnittstelle zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen, die von familiären Verflechtungen, weitreichenden Gelehrtennetzwerken und patronalen Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen geprägt waren. Auf diese Weise verkörperte die Naturforschende Gesellschaft zum einen den Aufklärungsprozess innerhalb der Stadt Danzig und zum anderen deren Stellenwert als ein wissenschaftlicher Standort im damaligen Europa.
Kämpfe mit Marx

Die Wiederentdeckung des Marxismus durch die Neue Linke: eine spannungsvolle Geschichte.Schon vor 1968, in den 1950er Jahren, entstand eine Neue Linke. Junge akademische Intellektuelle begannen jenseits der polarisierten traditionellen Arbeiterbewegung nach neuen Anknüpfungspunkten für ein linkes Denken zu suchen. Neu gegründete Theoriezeitschriften wurden dabei zu ihren Organisationskernen. In der Theorie fand die Neue Linke gemeinsame Überzeugungen und verschmolz auch hierdurch zu einer vorgestellten Gemeinschaft. Insbesondere marxistische Theorien wurden wiederentdeckt und neu interpretiert.Mit Marx führte die Neue Linke gemeinsame Kämpfe gegen eine »bürgerliche« Öffentlichkeit - mit Marx trug sie aber auch immer stärker Kämpfe untereinander aus. David Bebnowski nutzt die beiden West-Berliner Zeitschriften »Das Argument« und »PROKLA« als Seismographen und Sonden zur Ergründung der Geschichte der Neuen Linken und des akademischen Marxismus. Dabei wird deutlich, dass »1968« nicht nur für Aufbrüche steht, sondern ebenso zu Spaltungen führte, die die Linke bis heute kennzeichnen.
Die Beschäftigten des französischen Uhrenherstellers LIP machten 1973 europaweit Furore: Im Kampf gegen Entlassungen stellten sie Verhandlungsroutinen und Hierarchien infrage und nahmen Produktion und Verkauf von Armbanduhren in die eigene Hand. Wenige Jahre später gründeten die »LIPs« mehrere Produktionsgenossenschaften.
Jens Beckmann untersucht diese Auseinandersetzungen von ihren Anfängen bis zum Arbeitsalltag in den 1980er Jahren. Er zeigt, welche Vorstellungen von Selbstverwaltung sich hier niederschlugen, und nimmt eine gründliche Kontextualisierung in Branche und Region vor – von der Revolte der 1968er Jahre bis zu Kurzarbeit und Sozialplänen.
