Let X be a smooth n-dimensional manifold and D be an open connected set in X with smooth boundary OD. Perturbing the Cauchy problem for an elliptic system Au = f in D with data on a closed set Gamma subset of partial derivativeD, we obtain a family of mixed problems depending on a small parameter epsilon > 0. Although the mixed problems are subjected to a noncoercive boundary condition on partial derivativeDF in general, each of them is uniquely solvable in an appropriate Hilbert space D-T and the corresponding family {u(epsilon)} of solutions approximates the solution of the Cauchy problem in D-T whenever the solution exists. We also prove that the existence of a solution to the Cauchy problem in D-T is equivalent to the boundedness of the family {u(epsilon)}. We thus derive a solvability condition for the Cauchy problem and an effective method of constructing the solution. Examples for Dirac operators in the Euclidean space R-n are treated. In this case, we obtain a family of mixed boundary problems for the Helmholtz equation
We define a class of boundary value problems on manifolds with fibered boundary. This class is in a certain sense a deformation between the classical boundary value problems and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problems in subspaces (it contains both as special cases). The boundary conditions in this theory are taken as elements of the C*-algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and families of pseudodifferential operators in the fibers. We prove the Fredholm. property for elliptic boundary value problems and compute a topological obstruction (similar to Atiyah-Bott obstruction) to the existence of elliptic boundary conditions for a given elliptic operator. Geometric operators with trivial and nontrivial obstruction are given. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
Elliptic operators on smooth compact manifolds are classified by K-homology. We prove that a similar classification is valid also for manifolds with simplest singularities: isolated conical points and edges. The main ingredients of the proof of these results are: Atiyah-Singer difference construction in the noncommutative case and Poincare isomorphism in K- theory for ( our) singular manifolds. As an application we give a formula in topological terms for the obstruction to Fredholm problems on manifolds with edges
There is a close connection between a variety and its clone. The clone of a variety is a multibased algebra, where the different universes are the sets of n-ary terms over this variety for every natural number n and where the operations describe the superposition of terms of different arities. All projections are added as nullary operations. Subvarieties correspond to homomorphic images of clones. Subclones can be described by reducts of varieties, isomorphic clones by equivalent varieties. Clone identities correspond to hyperidentities and varieties of clones to hypervarieties. Pseudovarieties are classes of finite algebras which are closed under taking of subalgebras, homomorphic images and finite direct products. Pseudovarieties are important in the theories of finite state automata, rational languages, finite semigroups and their connections. In a very natural way, there arises the question for the clone of a pseudovariety. In the present paper, we will describe this algebraic structure
A finite algebra A = (A; F-A) is said to be order-primal if its clone of all term operations is the set of all operations defined on A which preserve a given partial order <= on A. In this paper we study algebraic properties of order-primal algebras for connected ordered sets (A; <=). Such order-primal algebras are constantive, simple and have no non-identical automorphisms. We show that in this case F-A cannot have only unary fundamental operations or only one at least binary fundamental operation. We prove several properties of the varieties and the quasi-varieties generated by constantive and simple algebras and apply these properties to order-primal algebras. Further, we use the properties of order-primal algebras to formulate new primality criteria for finite algebras
We study the phase dynamics of a chain of autonomous oscillators with a dispersive coupling. In the quasicontinuum limit the basic discrete model reduces to a Korteveg-de Vries-like equation, but with a nonlinear dispersion. The system supports compactons: solitary waves with a compact support and kovatons which are compact formations of glued together kink-antikink pairs that may assume an arbitrary width. These robust objects seem to collide elastically and, together with wave trains, are the building blocks of the dynamics for typical initial conditions. Numerical studies of the complex Ginzburg-Landau and Van der Pol lattices show that the presence of a nondispersive coupling does not affect kovatons, but causes a damping and deceleration or growth and acceleration of compactons
The inhomogeneous partial derivative-equation is an inexhaustible source of locally unsolvable equations, subelliptic estimates and other phenomena in partial differential equations. Loosely speaking, for the analysis on complex manifolds with boundary nonelliptic problems are typical rather than elliptic ones. Using explicit integral representations we assign a Fredholm complex to the Dolbeault complex over an arbitrary bounded domain in C-n. (C) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
Consider the operator T = -d(2)/dx(2) + x(2) + q(x) in L-2 (R), where q is a real function with q' and integral(0)(x) q(s) ds bounded. The spectrum of T is purely discrete and consists of simple eigenvalues. We determine their asymptotics mu(n) = (2n + 1) + (2 pi)(-1) integral(-pi)(pi) q(root 2n+1 sin theta)d theta + O(n(-1/3)) and we extend these results for complex q.
We study boundary-contact problems for elliptic equations (and systems) with interfaces that have conical singularities. Such problems represent continuous operators between weighted Sobolev spaces and subspaces with asymptotics. Ellipticity is formulated in terms of extra transmission conditions along the interfaces with a control of the conormal symbolic structure near conical singularities. We show regularity and asymptotics of solutions in weighted spaces, and we construct parametrices. The result will be illustrated by a number of explicit examples. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. We show relative index formulas for boundary value problems in cylindrical domains and Sobolev spaces with different weights at too. The amplitude functions are meromorphic in the axial covariable and take values in the space of boundary value problems on the cross section of the cylinder. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
