For world literature studies, Indian writing in English offers an exceptionally rich and variegated field of analysis: On the one hand, a set of prominent Indian or diasporic writers accrues substantial literary capital through metropolitan review circuits and award systems and thus maintains the high international visibility that Indian writing in English has acquired ever since the early 1980s. Addressing a readership that spans countries and continents, this kind of writing functions as a viable tributary to world literature. On the other hand, a new boom of Indian mass fiction in English has emerged that, while targeting a strictly domestic audience, is always already implicated in the dynamics of world literature as well, albeit in a very different way: As they deploy, appropriate and adopt a wide range of globally available templates of popular genres, these texts have globality inscribed into their very textures even if they do not circulate internationally.
Swearing in a public place
(2017)
The paper deals with the usage of swear words on the online forum "reddit". Three research questions are dealt with:
How often are swear words used?
How are these swear words received by other users?
Does the topic of the conversation have an influence on the reception and amount of usage of swear words?
The corpus from which the results are taken comprises almost 900 million words. The words are taken from February 2017. Compared to other, similar studies, the corpus is considerably larger and contempory.
In addition, the theoretical part discusses the linguistic basics of swear words. These include concepts such as the theory of politeness, the topic of taboos and its corresponding words and censorship. This is done to explain the factors that influence the use and application of swear words and to explain why swearwords are so special in comparison to other word groups. In addition, further research results from other corpora are presented and compared with the results afterwards. This includes corpora that are also composed of online communication, as well as corpora that reproduce spoken language. The results from all the corpora presented deal with results from the English language.
The results of this study indicate that the swear words on "reddit" are used approximately as often as they are on other platforms. The perception of these swear words is mostly positive, which suggests that the use of swear words on "reddit" is not perceived as impolite. In addition, an influence of the discussion topic on the frequency and reception of swear words could be determined.

This essay reads Sam Selvon’s novel The Lonely Londoners (1956) as a milestone in the decolonisation of British fiction. After an introduction to Selvon and the core composition of the novel, it discusses the ways in which the narrative takes on issues of race and racism, how it in the tradition of the Trinidadian carnival confronts audiences with sexual profanation and black masculine swagger, and not least how the novel, especially through its elaborate use of creole Englishes, reimagines London as a West Indian metropolis. The essay then turns more systematically to the ways in which Selvon translates Western literary models and their isolated subject positions into collective modes of narrative performance taken from Caribbean orature and the calypsonian tradition. The Lonely Londoners breathes entirely new life into the ossified conventions of the English novel, and imbues it with unforeseen aesthetic, ethical, political and epistemological possibilities.
