Over the last decades Britain´s ethnic minorities have successfully established themselves in a multicultural society. In particular, Indian – Hindu communities generally improved their social and economic situation. In this context, the third generation of British Indians is now growing up. In contrast to the previous generation of the Indian diaspora, these children grow up in an established ethnic community, which learned to retain its religion, traditions and culture in a foreign environment. At the same time, these children are part of the multicultural British society. Based on the academic discussion about the second generation of immigrated ethnic communities, when the youth often suffered from cultural differences, racism and discrimination and therefore rejected aspects of their culture of origin, this paper assumes that the loss of the culture of origin further increases in the third generation. This thesis follows the main theories about the connection between generation and integration. It is believed that the preference of western culture influences the personal, ethnic and cultural identity of young people. This leads to the rejection of traditional bonds. Before introducing this thesis various theoretical concepts are discussed which are inevitable for the comprehension of the diasporic situation in which British Indian youngsters grow up. As part of the worldwide Asian Indian diaspora Indian families in Britain maintain manifold links to Indian communities in various countries. Particularly, the link to India plays a decisive role; the subcontinent is referred to as an abstract homeland, especially by the first generation. While the grandparents strongly adhere to their Indian culture and Hindu religion, the second generation already generated cultural change. In this process various cultural values of the Indian ethnic community have been questioned and modified. Further, the second generation pushed the integration into the British society by giving up the dependence on the ethnic network. This paper is based on a hybrid and fluent definition of culture. This definition also applies to the underlying understanding of identity and ethnicity. Due to migration, cultural contact and the multilocality of the diaspora, diasporic and post-diasporic identities and cultures are characterized by hybridity, heterogeneity, fragmentation and flexibility. Particularly, in the younger generation – though dependent on a number of social and structural factors - cultural change and mixture happen; in this process new ethnicities and identities evolve. In the second and third part of this paper the thesis of loss of culture of origin is refuted on the basis of findings from empirical research. British - Indian youngsters in London have been questioned for the study. Half of the youngsters are related to a sampradaya, a Hindu sect. This enables the author to compare youngsters who do not belong to a particular religious group with those who are included into a religious and / or ethnic community through a sampradaya. The analysis of the findings which are based on qualitative and quantitative social research shows that the young people have great interest in their culture of origin and that they aim to maintain this culture in the diaspora. They identify as Indian and are proud of their cultural differences. In this, they differ from the second generation. In contrast to the generation of their grandparents the Indian identity of the third generation is not based on nostalgic memories. They confirm and emphasize their postdiasporic difference in a western multicultural society. The findings from the survey hereby exceed the thesis from Hansen’s theory about the rediscovery of the culture of origin in the third generation. The comparison of both groups shows that in the context of the differentiation of postmodern and postcolonial communities also ethnic groups become increasingly differentiated. Therefore, the Indian heritage and culture does not play the same role for every young British Indian.
Migration ist ein weltweites Phänomen. Der Politikwissenschaftler Christian Kube betrachtet sie in „Immigration und Arbeitskämpfe in den USA“ am Beispiel mexikanischer Einwanderer in Kalifornien. Der Autor analysiert das Verhältnis zwischen Arbeitern aus Mexiko und der US-amerikanischen Arbeiterbewegung, insbesondere den Gewerkschaften. Er tut dies an zwei Fallbeispielen, in denen Gewerkschaften versuchten bzw. versuchen, in Kalifornien transnationale Arbeiter zu organisieren: Zum einen wird das Los Angeles Manufacturing Project (LAMAP) betrachtet, zum anderen der immer noch andauernde Arbeitskampf in der Mandelfabrik Blue Diamond Growers (BDG) in Sacramento/Kalifornien. Abschließend wird die Frage beantwortet, ob die traditionellen Gewerkschaften der USA für die Interessenvertretung und Integration von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund im Niedriglohnsektor geeignet sind. Christian Kube ist der Ansicht, dass sie einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Organisation transnationaler Arbeiter leisten müssen, da es derzeit keine annähernd so mitgliederstarken Institutionen wie die Gewerkschaften in den USA gibt.
Background: The development of bioinformatics databases, algorithms, and tools throughout the last years has lead to a highly distributedworld of bioinformatics services. Without adequatemanagement and development support, in silico researchers are hardly able to exploit the potential of building complex, specialized analysis processes from these services. The Semantic Web aims at thoroughly equipping individual data and services with machine-processable meta-information, while workflow systems support the construction of service compositions. However, even in this combination, in silico researchers currently would have to deal manually with the service interfaces, the adequacy of the semantic annotations, type incompatibilities, and the consistency of service compositions. Results: In this paper, we demonstrate by means of two examples how Semantic Web technology together with an adequate domain modelling frees in silico researchers from dealing with interfaces, types, and inconsistencies. In Bio-jETI, bioinformatics services can be graphically combined to complex services without worrying about details of their interfaces or about type mismatches of the composition. These issues are taken care of at the semantic level by Bio-jETI’s model checking and synthesis features. Whenever possible, they automatically resolve type mismatches in the considered service setting. Otherwise, they graphically indicate impossible/incorrect service combinations. In the latter case, the workflow developermay either modify his service composition using semantically similar services, or ask for help in developing the missing mediator that correctly bridges the detected type gap. Newly developed mediators should then be adequately annotated semantically, and added to the service library for later reuse in similar situations. Conclusion: We show the power of semantic annotations in an adequately modelled and semantically enabled domain setting. Using model checking and synthesis methods, users may orchestrate complex processes from a wealth of heterogeneous services without worrying about interfaces and (type) consistency. The success of this method strongly depends on a careful semantic annotation of the provided services and on its consequent exploitation for analysis, validation, and synthesis. We are convinced that these annotations will become standard, as they will become preconditions for the success and widespread use of (preferred) services in the Semantic Web
Die Integration Europas bleibt für die Sozialwissenschaften eine Quelle der Inspiration und Herausforderung. Auch 53 Jahre nach Unterzeichnung der Römischen Verträge ist der Kontinent weiter in Bewegung, geht es um die Vision seiner zukünftigen Gestalt ebenso wie um die Regelung vielfältigster Tagesprobleme. Um zu dieser Debatte einen spezifischen Beitrag zu leisten, fand im Juni 2010 an der Universität Potsdam eine deutsch-polnische Konferenz zum Thema „Europa als Inspiration und Herausforderung aus sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht“ statt. Dabei wurden unterschiedliche Ansätze der europawissenschaftlichen Forschungen in den beteiligten Einrichtungen (z. B. aus der Sicht von Politologen, Soziologen, Historikern oder Kulturwissenschaftlern) präsentiert. Zugleich diente die Konferenz dazu, das wissenschaftliche Forschungsinteresse am „nahen Osten“ wieder zu stärken.
Die Zuwanderung und der Integration von Zuwanderern aus den GUS-Staaten in Deutschland ist eine bedeutsame politische und rechtliche Thematik. Diese Thematik ist in Deutschland bisher noch wenig untersucht und nur in Teilbereichen bearbeitet. Deshalb untersucht das vorgestellte Werk folgende Fragen und Aspekte: Analyse der Zuwanderung aus den GUS-Staaten; Darstellung von Zuwanderungsgruppen aus den GUS-Staaten und ihres rechtlichen Status; die Wellen der Zuwanderung anhand der Zuwanderer aus den GUS-Staaten, einschließlich (Spät)Aussiedlern und jüdische Zuwanderern, tschetschenischen Asylsuchenden, Familienangehörige, Studierende, qualifizierte Arbeitskrafte usw., Analyse der Integrationsprogramme und Integrationsmaßnahmen für die Zuwanderer aus den GUS-Staaten; Darstellung der Integrationschancen und Integrationshemmnisse am Beispiel der Zuwanderer aus den GUS-Staaten, einschließlich das Recht auf Annerkennung der akademischen und beruflichen Qualifikation, das Recht auf Arbeit u.a., die russischen Rückkehr- und (Reintegrations-) Programme für die im Bundesgebiet lebenden Zuwanderer aus den GUS-Staaten – ihre Analyse und Bewertung. Eine weitere Besonderheit der Veröffentlichung besteht darin, dass die Autorin Ihre wissenschaftlichen Ausführungen zur rechtlichen Stellung der GUS-Zuwanderer und zu den Erfolgen bei ihrer Integration, aber auch zu den Integrationshemmnissen und Integrationsproblemen auf eine soziologische Befragung von Zuwanderern aus den GUS-Staaten in den Ländern Brandenburg und Berlin stützt. Die empirische Untersuchung bezieht sich auf den Zeitraum 1991 bis 2009.
Russian Jews who left the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and its Successor States after 1989 are considered as one of the best qualified migrants group worldwide. In the preferred countries of destination (Israel, the United States and Germany) they are well-known for cultural self-assertion, strong social upward mobility and manifold forms of self organisation and empowerment. Using Suzanne Kellers sociological model of “Strategic Elites”, it easily becomes clear that a huge share of the Russian Jewish Immigrants in Germany and Israel are part of various elites due to their qualification and high positions in the FSU – first of all professional, cultural and intellectual elites (“Intelligentsija”). The study aimed to find out to what extent developments of cultural self-assertion, of local and transnational networking and of ethno-cultural empowerment are supported or even initiated by the immigrated (Russian Jewish) Elites. The empirical basis for this study have been 35 half-structured expert interviews with Russian Jews in both countries (Israel, Germany) – most of them scholars, artists, writers, journalists/publicists, teachers, engineers, social workers, students and politicians. The qualitative analysis of the interview material in Israel and Germany revealed that there are a lot of commonalities but also significant differences. It was obvious that almost all of the interview partners remained to be linked with Russian speaking networks and communities, irrespective of their success (or failure) in integration into the host societies. Many of them showed self-confidence with regard to the groups’ amazing professional resources (70% of the adults with academic degree), and the cultural, professional and political potential of the FSU immigrants was usually considered as equal to those of the host population(s). Thus, the immigrants’ interest in direct societal participation and social acceptance was accordingly high. Assimilation was no option. For the Russian Jewish “sense of community” in Israel and Germany, Russian Language, Arts and general Russian culture have remained of key importance. The Immigrants do not feel an insuperable contradiction when feeling “Russian” in cultural terms, “Jewish” in ethnical terms and “Israeli” / “German” in national terms – in that a typical case of additive identity shaping what is also significant for the Elites of these Immigrants. Tendencies of ethno-cultural self organisation – which do not necessarily hinder impressing individual careers in the new surroundings – are more noticeable in Israel. Thus, a part of the Russian Jewish Elites has responded to social exclusion, discrimination or blocking by local population (and by local elites) with intense efforts to build (Russian Jewish) Associations, Media, Educational Institutions and even Political Parties. All in all, the results of this study do very much contradict popular stereotypes of the Russian Jewish Immigrant as a pragmatic, passive “Homo Sovieticus”. Among the Interview Partners in this study, civil-societal commitment was not the exception but rather the rule. Traditional activities of the early, legendary Russian „Intelligentsija“ were marked by smooth transitions from arts, education and societal/political commitment. There seem to be certain continuities of this self-demand in some of the Russian Jewish groups in Israel. Though, nothing comparable could be drawn from the Interviews with the Immigrants in Germany. Thus, the myth and self-demand of Russian “Intelligentsija” is irrelevant for collective discourses among Russian Jews in Germany.
Moroccans are the largest group of immigrants in Spain. Once they arrive at the new place, one of their first necessities is to access shelter. Focusing on the south-eastern region of Murcia in Spain and combining quantitative and qualitative data, I explore the process of housing market integration of Moroccan migrants. Special attention is paid to the dynamics of this process and the role that the interaction between the supply side and the foreign demand of accommodation plays. Thereby, I will emphasise how an unfavourable structure of the housing market, along with behaviour of local private landlords on the supply side leads to considerable problems concerning the housing market integration of migrants in Spain. Thus, this paper aims to give a more accurate interpretation of the dynamics influencing the housing outcomes of migrants in the studied area.
The real-time recognition and precise correction of baseline shifts in strong-motion records is a critical issue for GPS and accelerometer combined processing. This paper proposes a method to adaptively recognize and correct baseline shifts in strong-motion records by utilizing GPS measurements using two phases Kalman filter. By defining four kinds of learning statistics and criteria, the time series of estimated baseline shifts can be divided into four time intervals: initialization, static, transient and permanent. During the time interval in which the transient baseline shift is recognized, the dynamic noise of the Kalman filter system and the length of the baseline shifts estimation window are adaptively adjusted to yield a robust integration solution. The validations from an experimental and real datasets show that acceleration baseline shifts can be precisely recognized and corrected, thus, the combined system adaptively adjusted the estimation strategy to get a more robust solution. Die zweiteilige Publikation „Musikarbeit im Kontext von Inklusion und Integration“ der Potsdamer Schriftenreihe zur Musikpädagogik beinhaltet Erträge aus Veranstaltungen und Qualifikationsarbeiten mehrerer Jahre, die am Lehrstuhl für Musikpädagogik und Musikdidaktik der Universität Potsdam entstanden sind. Beide Bände enthalten neben theoretischen Beiträgen auch Beiträge aus Praxis und Ausbildung in verschiedenen Berufsfeldern, die das besondere Potenzial musikalischer Betätigung für Inklusion und Integration anhand von best-practise-Beispielen darstellen und sind somit als umfassendes Studienmaterial konzipiert.
Der erste Band legt den Schwerpunkt auf die Dokumentation der am Lehrstuhl für Musikpädagogik und Musikdidaktik durchgeführten internationalen Fachtagung „Musik in sozialen Feldern und Inklusionskontexten“ sowie auf Qualifikationsarbeiten, die im Anschluss an die Tagung entstanden sind.
Die Veröffentlichung der vorliegenden Arbeits- und Forschungsergebnisse wurde durch die Unterstützung des Ministeriums für Arbeit, Soziales, Gesundheit, Frauen und Familie des Landes Brandenburg und der Integrationsbeauftragten sowie durch die Universitätsgesellschaft Potsdam e. V. ermöglicht.
