Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich im Zuge der jüdischen Aufklärung erstmals eine explizit an ein kindliches Lesepublikum gerichtete Literatur. Den jüdischen Aufklärern galt die verstärkte Auseinandersetzung mit der Hebräischen Bibel als Möglichkeit, an jüdische Traditionen anzuknüpfen, gleichzeitig aber auch neuen Vorstellungen und Erwartungen, die von jüdischer und nichtjüdischer Seite an ein modernes Judentum gestellt wurden, gerecht zu werden.
Daher gehörten Kinderbibeln, die eine Auswahl an oftmals überarbeiteten Texten der Hebräischen Bibel bieten, zu den ersten solcher Werke, die veröffentlicht wurden. Im 19. Und dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich die Jüdische Kinderbibel zur erfolgreichsten Gattung jüdisch-religiöser Bildungsmedien. Auswahl und Bearbeitung der Texte folgten dabei bestimmten pädagogischen, philosophischen und religiösen Anliegen und waren auf ein konkretes Lesepublikum abgestimmt.
Die vorliegende Studie untersucht diese Werke als Quelle gesellschaftlicher und religiöser Transfer-, Transformations- und Innovationsprozesse ihrer Zeit. Dabei wird zunächst der historische Kontext der Entstehungszeit und anschließend die Entwicklung der Gattung bis in das 21. Jahrhundert nachgezeichnet und mit eingehenden Textanalysen illustriert. Grundlage und Leitlinien der Untersuchung bilden die Analyse verschiedener Bearbeitungsstrategien in Bezug auf den biblischen Text. Neben der religionshistorischen Perspektive werden auch literatur-, sprach- und kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen auf die Gattung Jüdische Kinderbibel angewandt.
Vom Nutzen der Aufklärung

Isaak Euchel (1756-1804) war nach seinem Studium bei Kant einer der bedeutendsten Vorkämpfer und hebräischen Schriftsteller der jüdischen Aufklärung in Mitteleuropa. Die jüdische Aufklärung, hebräisch: Haskala, entstand ab 1770 in Berlin. Diese Aufklärungsbewegung der jüdischen Minderheit setzte sich für die Bildung und Ausbildung, bürgerliche Gleichberechtigung und intellektuelle Anerkennung der Juden in der europäischen Aufklärung ein.
Dieser Band vereint in kommentierter Erstübersetzung Euchels programmatische Aufsätze zur Haskala, seine Prosa, Briefe und satirischen Schriften; mit den seltenen hebräischen Originaltexten im Anhang.

Isaac Euchel (1756-1804) war lange Zeit einer der zu Unrecht vergessenen jüdischen Aufklärer. Das hat sich erst seit wenigen Jahren geändert: Seine bedeutende Rolle innerhalb der Haskala, der jüdischen Aufklärungsbewegung, wurde in der Forschung erkannt, seine wichtigen Schriften in hebräischer und jiddischer Sprache wiederentdeckt, übersetzt und ediert.
Euchel war ein vielseitiger Aufklärer: Er war Verleger und Kaufmann, Autor, Herausgeber und Übersetzer, schrieb in Deutsch, Hebräisch und Jiddisch; er war zugleich in der jüdischen und in der christlichen Gesellschaft zu Hause, war Student Kants und Biograph Mendelssohns. In Königsberg und Berlin wurde er zum Organisator und Vernetzer der über halb Europa verstreuten Anhänger der Haskala, die nach seiner Vorstellung durch die Erneuerung der hebräischen Sprache eine aufgeklärte und moderne jüdische Kultur hervorbringen sollte.
Anlässlich seines 250. Geburtstags trafen sich Historiker, Hebraisten, Jiddisten, Judaisten und Literaturwissenschaftler aus Deutschland, Österreich, Israel und den USA in Potsdam, um auf einer internationalen Tagung unter dem Titel »Vom Nutzen der Aufklärung oder: Woß tut me damit« sein Leben und Werk zu ehren und umfassend zu diskutieren. Der vorliegende Tagungsband bündelt die Früchte dieser Diskussionen und bietet einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung.
