Der »Medicus« komprimiert das examensrelevante Wissen zum Bürgerlichen Recht. Das Werk ist Lehrbuch, Handbuch und Repetitorium zugleich und kann auf vielfältige Art genutzt werden: Man kann es systematisch durcharbeiten, es punktuell zu bestimmten Fragekomplexen heranziehen oder es vor dem Examen zur Wissensüberprüfung und Wiederholung in die Hand nehmen.
Für die Neuauflage wurden die aktuellen Gesetzesänderungen eingearbeitet. Zudem ist gerade in den letzten beiden Jahren eine Fülle examensrelevanter Rechtsprechung – namentlich zu den ersten beiden Büchern des BGB – ergangen, die berücksichtigt wurde.

Die Vorrede der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie endet mit einem denkwürdigen Bild: "Wenn die Philosophie ihr Grau in Grau malt, dann ist eine Gestalt des Lebens alt geworden, und mit Grau in Grau lässt sie sich nicht verjüngen, sondern nur erkennen; die Eule der Minerva beginnt erst mit der einbrechenden Dämmerung ihren Flug."
