El siguiente artículo analiza críticamente la obra sobre Alexander von Humboldt en Venezuela. El texto está dividido en cinco capítulos que desmenuzan algunos de los problemas fundamentales encontrados: la ausencia de análisis crítico al legado escrito del gran viajero, confusión entre paisajes subocupados y vírgenes, desdén por las descripciones urbanas y en particular por la obra de varios misioneros sobre los territorios amazónicos y guayaneses anteriores a Humboldt. No olvidamos la supuesta gran amistad entre Humboldt y Simón Bolívar, sobre la que se ha forjado un famoso diálogo y hasta un ascenso al Vesuvio sin ningún tipo de prueba escrita alguna.
La recepción de la obra de Alexander von Humboldt ha sido de tal magnitud en Venezuela que lo ha elevado a la categoría de héroe. Más que ninguna otra, la obra Viaje a las Regiones Equinocciales del Nuevo Continente es la que ha cimentado la admiración por el gran viajero. Un éxtasis cuya expresión escrita se revela en un centenar de obras. Otra base fundamental del culto a Humboldt tiene que ver con su supuesta amistad con Simón Bolívar. La notable acogida de Humboldt tiene, asimismo, variadísimas expresiones en la toponimia, pues su nombre está presente en accidentes naturales, colegios, universidades, avenidas, calles, parques, medios impresos e instituciones a lo largo y ancho de la geografía física y humana venezolanas.
No tenemos parecidas noticias sobre el recuerdo local en cuanto a Humboldt como lo tenemos en el caso de las cartas de Ferdinand Bellermann en Venezuela. Lo que si tenemos son las fuentes en Kraków que demuestran el gran impacto de Humboldt entre la élite política y económica en la Habana (1800-1830) y a la vez sus redes de comunicación. En la historia intelectual de Cuba el nombre de Humboldt esta intimamente ligado con el cosmopolitismo de las élites hispano-cubanas (Arango, conde Villanueva, Sagra, Saco) como con el concepto de la nación cubana (Luz y Caballero, Vidal Morales y Morales, Leuchsenring, Ortiz, Barnet y otros). Los últimos ganaron la hegemonía discursiva e hicieron a Humboldt “suyo” (“segundo descubridor de Cuba”), aunque este Humboldt eurocriollo para ellos también tenía la función de impedir cambios fundamentales en el sistema de esclavitud o comportamiento frente a los problemas de la post-emancipación en Cuba.
