Alexander von Humboldt gehört um 1810 zu den bekanntesten Wissenschaftlern der Welt. Sein Ruhm beruht in hohem Maß auf seiner Amerikanischen Reise (1799–1804).
Seit dem Ankauf der Amerikanischen Reisetagebücher durch die Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz im Jahr 2013 hat die Humboldt-Forschung auf verschiedenen Ebenen neue Impulse erhalten. Inhaltlich bieten die Tagebücher reiches Material u. a. für die Wissenschaftsgeschichte, für die Literaturwissenschaft sowie für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Arbeit mit Manuskripten wirft gleichzeitig Fragen der Erfassung, der Materialität und der Edition auf. Schließlich wird durch die jüngst begonnenen Forschungs-, Sicherungs- und Editionsprojekte die Beschäftigung mit Humboldt auch institutionell intensiviert.
Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes spiegeln den engen Zusammenhang all dieser Perspektiven wider und nähern sich Humboldt in seinem Schreiben zwischen Natur- und Kulturwissenschaft als einem hochaktuellen Denker.
In 1810 Alexander von Humboldt is among the best known scientists in the word. His fame rested to a large extent on his American journey (1799-1804). Since the Prussian Cultural Foundation acquired the American travel diaries in 2013, Humboldt research has received new impulses on many levels. The content of the diaries offers rich source material for the disciplines including history of science, literary history, art, and cultural studies. Work with the manuscripts also throws up questions of recording, materiality and editing. Finally, the recently-started research, conservation and editing projects have also intensified the institutional engagement with Humboldt.
The essays in this volume reflect the close connections between all these perspectives and approach Humboldt through his writings between natural and cultural history as a very contemporary thinker.
The fourth volume in the LAPASEC series (Landau-Paris Studies on the Eighteenth Century), this collection of essays is based on an international conference held in Landau, in June 2014. The symposium united scholars from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. The best papers delivered at this occasion were augmented with additional contributions by scholars working on aspects of the (landscape) garden in the long eighteenth century. Focussing on some neglected aspects of the discourse on gardens in the Enlightenment and in early Romanticism, the book systematically unfolds the variety and importance of European garden culture in a comparative perspective. Particular attention is given to the special configuration of discourses concerned with the garden that actually had an impact on writing and planning. This configuration consisted of theory, praxis, and the metaphorical as well as concrete appropriation of both. This is the reason why the book is divided into three parts – the theory of gardens, the garden as utopos and eutopos between Cythera and pleasure garden, and the exotic (non-European) garden and its influence on the Old World. The assessment of the discourse on gardens of the long eighteenth century thus covers a relatively large area. What the three parts have in common is the fact that they focus especially on the rhizomatic connection of the discourses. Partly derived from botany, the idea of the rhizome, further developed and theorized by Deleuze and Guattari, seems to be a concept of thinking that is particularly well suited for the enterprise undertaken in this book. With the present collection of scholarly essays from five countries, the editors hope to make accessible important contemporary research on the garden in the spirit of Voltaire who famously urged his contemporaries: "il faut cultiver notre jardin". This book not only "cultivates" the garden in Voltaire's sense, it also demonstrates how the discourse on the garden affected.
Innerhalb der USA gilt New Orleans seit jeher als die „unamerikanischste“ Stadt, als exotisch und anders, gar als „sozio-geographischer Unfall“. Hier überkreuzen sich nicht nur die Einflüsse verschiedener Kolonialkulturen, sondern auch die Routen des atlantischen Sklavenhandels und der asiatischen Arbeitsmigration und nicht zuletzt die ideellen wie materiellen Transferbewegungen zwischen den beiden Amerikas.
Der vorliegende Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, diese vielfältigen transarealen Zirkulationsprozesse zu analysieren und das Potential New Orleans' zur paradigmatischen Metropole des Globalen Südens auszuloten. Im Fokus stehen verschiedene Formen der kulturellen Kreolisierung, wie sie sich in der Sprache, der Literatur, der Musik, aber auch in Alltagsphänomen wie dem Karneval oder Computerspielen manifestieren.
Within the USA, New Orleans has long been considered the ‘un-American’ city, seen as exotic and different, even as a ‘socio-geographical accident’. It is a crossroads not only for the influences of different colonial cultures but also for the routes of the Atlantic slave trade and immigration of Asian workers, and not least for material and non-material transfer between the two Americas. This volume seeks to analyse these manifold transareal circulation processes and to explore New Orleans’s potential as a paradigmatic metropolis of the Global South. The focus is on different forms of creolisation as manifested in language, literature and music, but also in everyday phenomena such as Carnival or computer games.
