Jean-Jacques Rousseau veröffentlichte seine zwei wichtigsten Werke, den Erziehungsroman Òmile und den Gesellschaftsvertrag, in zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Monaten. Beide halten Ideale hoch, die widersprüchlicher nicht sein könnten: den für sich selbst und individuell entfalteten Menschen und den in seinen Staat integrierten Bürger. Versucht man jedoch, Mensch und Bürger zu vereinen, so kann nur Schlechtes daraus entstehen - mit diesem Unterton führt Rousseau den Bourgeois als Mischung beider Idealbilder ein.
