On the basis of a case study on the linearisation of German infinitival complements, the present paper illustrates the advantages of selected quantitative and statistical methods in diachronic studies. In particular, it first discusses, the problem of the availability of balanced diachronic corpora and how mixed-effects modelling can help make the best of "bad data" and second, it deals with the question of periodisation and shows the advantages of a data-driven method.

Heinrich Böll was known in German postwar literature primarily as a committed intellectual and author of novels and short stories. Less visible were his poems, which are neither among the great lyrical texts of postwar literature nor exclusively occasional poetry – although occasional poems make up an important part of Böll’s body of work. The writer of poems also expresses concerns typical of Böll as an author in general, such as themes of everyday life, social problems, or issues of religion. This is particularly evident in the poems written between 1968 and 1984, in which he speaks of his hometown of Cologne. Changes of the postwar decades are thereby problematized within the horizon of Cologne’s history. Böll thus delivers a noteworthy attempt to update the tradition of metropolitan poetry beyond National Socialism and the postwar period.

Goethe had lifelong unhappy memories of his early riding lessons at the Frankfurt Marstall. Yet not only did he become a passionate rider later, but he also held riding in unusually high esteem as a veritable form of 'art'. In his literary works, riding serves as a complex symbol of, among other things, a prudent, measured style of government, an analogy that was also drawn in early modern equestrian theory. Above all, however, according to his understanding of art, riding can be located not only in the early modern system of the artes, but also in the contemporary aesthetics of autonomy.

The German writer Wilhelm Marr is known as the father of modern antisemitism. Little attention has been paid to the fact that Marr did not coin the term “antisemitism” in his influential pamphlet Der Sieg des Judenthums über das Germanenthum published in March 1879. The neologism first appeared in the name and programme of the “Antisemiten-Liga” which came to existence in September 1879. Even less attention has been paid to the fact that it was not Marr, but the Berlin chemist and engineer Hector de Grousilliers who was the initiator of this political organisation. Although Marr attended the founding meeting and joined it as a member, he played no active role in it. Grousilliers, paradoxically, first had the idea of founding a “Lessing-Verein”, before his “Antisemiten-Liga” came into being in an absurd volte-face. Carrying out a bizarre revaluation of Lessing’s Ring Parable, Grousilliers attributed antisemitic semantics to the concept of tolerance. He delivered several speeches on tolerance in the “League” before turning his attention to the publication of the antisemitic humorous-satirical magazine Die Wahrheit. Humoristisch-satirisches Wochenblatt.
Rainald Goetz’ novel Johann Holtrop has repeatedly been read as a failed satire of the 21st century’s financial crisis: On the one hand, its descriptions were understood as opinionated and sententious. On the other hand, critics were irritated by what was seen as an inconsequent integration of realistic narration into Goetz’ hyperbolic style of writing. This paper takes a different stance on the text: First, it discusses the work’s allusions to realistic narration and the financial crisis in detail. Second, it argues that Johann Holtrop transfers the idea of a collapsing economy into an only partially realistic poetic of distortion. Third, it suggests that this strategy can be fruitfully compared to a crumbling system of credit. On this basis, the novel is read as an inherently literary depiction of the financial crisis.

This contribution analyses the textual strategies in Danup’s literary dialogue, which is enriched in many ways with literary topoi and rhetorical devices. It is, in fact, a specialised text on the art of horsemanship, which proves to be surprisingly innovative in this regard. However, it is not only relevant to the hippological, but also to the political culture of the early modern period. For the author updates a literary genre pattern, takes up literary traditions and uses aesthetic means for successful self-promotion as an expert.
This article examines scenes of Zeitungslektüre (newspaper reading) in some exemplary Fontane novels to reconstruct them as a serial narrative pattern that fills specific narrative functions similar to other narrative patterns such as letter writing or country excursions (Landpartien) which have often been shown to be typical for Fontane’s novels. These newspaper scenes can be read as multifaceted culmination points at the surface of the novel’s story in which aspects of Fontane’s writing practices, formal aspects (characterization of figures, narrative temporalities, narrative structure), autopoietic reflection as well as addresses to the readers are brought into a complex interplay. The newspaper-reading scenes are thus significant textual signals of what has been called Fontane’s specific Zeitungspoetik. The argument is unfolded by examining examples from three different genres: the historical novel Unwiederbringlich, the “Berlin everyday novels” (“Berliner Alltagsgeschichten”) Irrungen, Wirrungen and Mathilde Möhring, and the Zeitroman or political novel Der Stechlin.

Rilkes ‚Tanagra‘
(2020)
In older research literature, the prose epics emerging from the court of Elisabeth of Lorraine and Nassau-Saarbrücken have repeatedly been accused of lacking structure and literariness. By contrast, this article shows that narrative principles of seriality generate the complex structure of the voluminous ›Loher und Maller‹: literary strategies of repetition and variation organize the text on different levels. Recurring narrative structures, thematic constellations and motivations as well as lexical stereotypes are part of this comprehensive principle of seriality. Not triviality and insufficiency, but structural and narrative complexity and lexical accumulation of significance characterize ›Loher und Maller‹.
