We study a broad class of isotropic vacuum cosmologies in fourth-order gravity under the condition that the gravitational Lagrangian be scale-invariant or almost scale-invariant. The gravitational Lagrangians considered will be of the form L = f(R) + k(G) where R and G are the Ricci and Gauss-Bonnet scalars respectively. Specifically we take f(R) = R^2n and k(G) = G^n or k(G) = G ln G. We find solutions in closed form for a spatially flat Friedmann space-time and interpret their asymptotic early-time and late-time behaviour as well as their inflationary stages. One unique example which we discuss is the case of a very small negative value of the parameter b in the Lagrangian L = R^2 + b G ln G which leads to the replacement of the exact de Sitter solution from L = R^2 (being a local attractor) to a power-law inflation exact solution also representing a local attractor. This shows how one can modify the dynamics from de Sitter to power-law inflation by the addition of the G ln G-term.
In this paper we give some general considerations about circularly symmetric, static space-times in 2+1 dimensions, focusing first on the surprising (at the time) existence of the BTZ black hole solution. We show that BTZ black holes and Schwarzschild black holes in 3+1 dimensions originate from different definitions of a black hole. There are two by-products of this general discussion: (i) we give a new and simple derivation of 2+1 dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time; (ii) we present an exact solution to 2+1 dimensional gravity coupled to a self-interacting real scalar field. The spatial part of the metric of this solution is flat but the temporal part behaves asymptotically like AdS space-time. The scalar field has logarithmic behavior as one would expect for a massless scalar field in flat space- time. The solution can be compared to gravitating scalar field solutions in 3+1 dimensions but with certain oddities connected with the 2+1 dimensional character of the space-time. The solution is unique to 2+1 dimensions; it does not carry over to 3+1 dimensions.
Um beim Berufseinstieg erfolgreich als Informatiker wirken zu können, reicht es oft nicht aus nur separierte Kenntnisse über technische und theoretische Grundlagen, Programmiersprachen, Werkzeuge und Selbst- und Zeitmanagement zu besitzen. Vielmehr sollten Absolventen diese Kenntnisse praktisch miteinander verzahnt einsetzen können. An der Universität wird Studierenden leider selten die Möglichkeit geboten, diese verschiedenen Bereiche der Informatik miteinander integriert auszuüben. Dafür entwickeln wir seit über zwei Dekaden ein Lehr- und Lernkonzept zur Unterstützung praktischer Softwareentwicklungsveranstaltungen und setzen dieses um. Dadurch bieten wir angehenden SoftwareentwicklerInnen und ProjektmanagerInnen eine Umgebung, in der sie neues, praktisch relevantes Wissen erwerben können, sich selbst praktisch erproben und ihr Wissen konkret einsetzen können. Hier legen wir einen Schwerpunkt auf das Arbeiten im Team. Das hier vorgestellte Konzept kann auf ähnliche Lehrveranstaltungen übertragen und aufgrund seiner Modularisierung verändert und erweitert werden.
Flood loss modeling is a central component of flood risk analysis. Conventionally, this involves univariable and deterministic stage-damage functions. Recent advancements in the field promote the use of multivariable and probabilistic loss models, which consider variables beyond inundation depth and account for prediction uncertainty. Although companies contribute significantly to total loss figures, novel modeling approaches for companies are lacking. Scarce data and the heterogeneity among companies impede the development of company flood loss models. We present three multivariable flood loss models for companies from the manufacturing, commercial, financial, and service sector that intrinsically quantify prediction uncertainty. Based on object-level loss data (n = 1,306), we comparatively evaluate the predictive capacity of Bayesian networks, Bayesian regression, and random forest in relation to deterministic and probabilistic stage-damage functions, serving as benchmarks. The company loss data stem from four postevent surveys in Germany between 2002 and 2013 and include information on flood intensity, company characteristics, emergency response, private precaution, and resulting loss to building, equipment, and goods and stock. We find that the multivariable probabilistic models successfully identify and reproduce essential relationships of flood damage processes in the data. The assessment of model skill focuses on the precision of the probabilistic predictions and reveals that the candidate models outperform the stage-damage functions, while differences among the proposed models are negligible. Although the combination of multivariable and probabilistic loss estimation improves predictive accuracy over the entire data set, wide predictive distributions stress the necessity for the quantification of uncertainty.
Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit zwei Aspekten der statistischen Eigenschaften von Clusterverfahren. Zum einen geht die Arbeit auf die Frage der Existenz von unterschiedlichen Clusteranalysemethoden zur Strukturfindung und deren unterschiedlichen Vorgehensweisen ein. Die Methode des Abstandes zwischen Mannigfaltigkeiten und die K-means Methode liefern ausgehend von gleichen Daten unterschiedliche Endclusterungen. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich näher mit den asymptotischen Eigenschaften des K-means Verfahrens. Hierbei ist die Menge der optimalen Clusterzentren konsistent. Bei Vergrößerung des Stichprobenumfangs gegen Unendlich konvergiert diese in Wahrscheinlichkeit gegen die Menge der Clusterzentren, die das Varianzkriterium minimiert. Ebenfalls konvergiert die Menge der optimalen Clusterzentren für n gegen Unendlich gegen eine Normalverteilung. Es hat sich dabei ergeben, dass die einzelnen Clusterzentren voneinander abhängen.
We use a dynamic scanning electron microscope (DySEM) to map the spatial distribution of the vibration of a cantilever beam. The DySEM measurements are based on variations of the local secondary electron signal within the imaging electron beam diameter during an oscillation period of the cantilever. For this reason, the surface of a cantilever without topography or material variation does not allow any conclusions about the spatial distribution of vibration due to a lack of dynamic contrast. In order to overcome this limitation, artificial structures were added at defined positions on the cantilever surface using focused ion beam lithography patterning. The DySEM signal of such high-contrast structures is strongly improved, hence information about the surface vibration becomes accessible. Simulations of images of the vibrating cantilever have also been performed. The results of the simulation are in good agreement with the experimental images.
