Die historische Forschung hat seit längerem herausgearbeitet, dass Migration nichts von einer Norm Abweichendes ist, sondern vielmehr ein »konstitutives Element der Menschheitsgeschichte« (J. Oltmer), der Mensch mithin stets ein »homo migrans« (K.-J. Bade) war. Auch die Geschichte Brandenburgs wurde seit jeher von Einwanderungsprozessen geprägt. Von »Toleranz« im modernen Sinne kann freilich keine Rede sein, sondern meistens ging es um ökonomisch nutzbringende Aufnahme bestimmter Gruppen. Sehr oft waren die Ansiedlungen aber auch das Ergebnis von Flucht, Vertreibung und kriegerischer Gewalt. Der vorliegende Band zeigt anhand von Beispielen vom frühen Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart die Bedeutung der Zuwanderung für Brandenburg auf. Der Bogen reicht von der slawischen Einwanderung des 8./9. Jahrhunderts bis zur Ankunft russisch-jüdischer »Kontingentflüchtlinge« im Gefolge der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, von Niederländern, Juden, Hugenotten, Revolutionsflüchtlingen in der Frühen Neuzeit bis hin zu Muslimen, Zwangsarbeitern, Vertriebenen und DDR-»Fremdarbeitern« im 20. Jahrhundert – eine Geschichte der Vielfalt des brandenburgischen Raumes und seiner Bevölkerung im Spiegel der Zuwanderung.

Friedrich Wilhelm I. von Preußen: ein Monarch der Widersprüche König Friedrich Wilhelm I. (1688-1740), Wegbereiter für Preußens Vormachtstellung, war bereits zu Lebzeiten eine höchst kontroverse Herrscherfigur. Anders als sein Sohn Friedrich der Große, der ein begnadeter Fachmann in Sachen Selbstinszenierung war, oder sein Großvater, dem »Großen Kurfürsten«, nach dem er benannt ist, wurde er von Anfang an ambivalent beurteilt. Frank Göse, Spezialist für die frühneuzeitliche preußische Geschichte, legt die erste umfassende Biographie des Monarchen vor und beurteilt ihn entschieden aus seiner Zeit heraus. Er zeichnet die Rolle des Königs an der Entwicklung Preußens nach und würdigt seine Leistungen in der Finanz-, Wirtschafts- und Militärpolitik. Als Herrscher ordnete er seinen »lieben blauen Kindern«, den Soldaten seines Königsregiments, alles unter. Mit cholerischen Charakterzügen, Geiz und Misstrauen ausgestattet weckte er beim Adel Ablehnung. Gleichzeitig stellten seine umfassenden Reformen im Bereich Bildung, Finanzen und Militär die Weichen für den oft deklarierten »preußischen Sonderweg«. Frank Göse analysiert in diesem Sachbuch die Person Friedrich Wilhelms I. prägnant und nachvollziehbar im Kontext seiner Herrschaftspraxis. So macht er den Weg frei für eine möglichst vorurteilsfreie Beurteilung des preußischen Königs!
Als Friedrich Wilhelm I.- der Soldatenkönig - 1713 den Thron bestieg, war Preußen ein zurückgebliebenes Land. Als er 1740 starb, verfügte es über Schulen, moderne Verwaltung und eine schlagkräftige Armee.Frank Göse schreibt die erste umfassende Biographie des Begründers preußischer Macht - und damit das Panorama Preußens zur Zeit seines Aufstiegs.

Militärische Eliten gehören traditionell zum Kanon militärgeschichtlicher Forschung. Der zu Recht geforderte Perspektivenwechsel innerhalb der Disziplin nach einer Militärgeschichte von „unten“, die auch die einfachen Soldaten in den Blick nimmt, hat dazu geführt, dass den Eliten lange Zeit wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wurde. Erst im Rahmen der „neuen Militärgeschichte“ geraten nun seit einigen Jahren die Eliten wieder stärker in den Fokus der Forschung. Gleichwohl ist ein befriedigender Erkenntnisstand für dieses klassische Feld nicht festzustellen. Noch immer klaffen in der deutschen Forschung, vor allem im Vergleich zu Frankreich und dem angelsächsischen Sprachraum, eklatante Lücken, die nur durch sozialgeschichtliche Grundlagenforschung und kulturgeschichtlich ausgerichtete Mikrostudien zu füllen sind. Die hier versammelten Analysen, die sich mit den militärischen Eliten Preußens, Bayerns, der weiteren Reichsterritorien sowie Schwedens und des Osmanischen Reiches beschäftigen, wollen einen Beitrag zur Schließung dieser Forschungslücken leisten und zudem Fragen und Perspektiven, die sich durch den „cultural turn“ innerhalb der Geschichtswissenschaft eröffnet haben, für diese Thematik ausloten.
