During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.

Alexander von Humboldt schickte aus Amerika Mineralproben, die nicht nur von naturwissenschaftlichem oder wirtschaftlichem Interesse waren. Vor allem grünes Steinmaterial, sogenannte Jade, war in Mesoamerika kulturell sehr bedeutsam und weit verbreitet, so daß sich aus diesem Rohstoff in der Sammlung auch bearbeitete Stücke vorfinden. Sie erlangten in Europa unterschiedliche Aufmerksamkeit. Die Jadeaxt und die Sonnenscheibe - beide im zweiten Weltkrieg verloren gegangen, hatten als “Humboldt-Axt” und “Humboldt-Scheibe” bezeichnet großes Interesse erregt, während ein Anhänger aus Jade in Form eines Köpfchens ganz in Vergessenheit geriet. Die Bedeutung der einzelnen Grünstein-Proben spiegelt unterschiedliche kulturgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge wider.
In diesem Artikel wird das Bild untersucht, das von Alexander von Humboldt seit seinem Aufbruch nach Amerika 1799 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1859 sowohl in professioneller als auch in privater Hinsicht in der spanischen Presse verbreitet worden war. Für eine solche Analyse ist es notwendig einerseits zu untersuchen, welche Aspekte seiner Person, seines Lebens, seines Werkes sowie seiner Ideen in der während jener Jahren erschienenen Presse erwähnt bzw. hervorgehoben wurden, und auf der anderen Seite, welche Facetten keinen Eingang in diese Publikationen erhielten - denn das Bild, das man von einer Persönlichkeit entstehen lassen will, setzt sich aus beiden Bereichen zusammen. In beiden Fällen ist es zudem unerlässlich, die Absichten bzw. Interessen zu untersuchen, die sich hinter dem jeweiligen “Fokus” der Publikationen verborgen haben mögen. Innerhalb dieser Studie kam der Rolle, die Humboldt im Zusammenhang mit zwei wichtigen Geschehnissen zu dieser Zeit – der Unabhängigkeitsbewegung der spanischen Kolonien in Amerika sowie dem, was wir heute “Moderne” nennen - zugesprochen worden war, eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Diese Phase in der Geschichte Spaniens fiel zudem in einen sehr wechselhaften und komplexen politisch-sozialen Kontext, woraus sich die Notwendigkeit erklärt, nicht nur die moderate Presse zu untersuchen, die sich in Spanien unter der absolutistischen Zensur entwickelt hatte, sondern ebenfalls die liberale Presse des Londoner Exils einzubeziehen, um zu sehen, inwiefern diese Zeitschriften eine unterschiediche Wahrnehmung Alexander von Humboldts aufzeigten.
Die bisher - 1860 und 1872 - unternommenen beiden Versuche, das Gesamtwerk Alexander von Humboldts bibliographisch zu erfassen, können als gescheitert betrachtet werden. Die in der mehr problem- als werkorientierten Schaffensweise Humboldts, der zeitgenössischen Popularität seiner Schriften und den buchhändlerischen Verhältnissen seiner Zeit begründete Unüberschaubarkeit seines publizierten Œuvres begründete eine Art bibliographischen und buchhändlerischen Mythos, der jeden weiteren Versuch einer verläßlichen und wenigstens in Teilen vollständigen Bibliographierung dieses Werkes geradezu als Abenteuer erscheinen lassen mußte. Horst Fiedler und Ulrike Leitner haben sich diesem bibliographischen Abenteuer gestellt. Als Ergebnis ihrer sich über zwei Jahrzehnte erstreckenden Bemühungen konnte im Jahre 2000 die Bibliographie der selbständig erschienenen Schriften Humboldts vorgelegt werden.
This article treats Alexander von Humboldt as an Atlantic intellectual, not only as an european intellectual. The article tries to analize also the "Ensayo político sobre la Isla de Cuba" as a key text of the second globalization ("industrial revolution"). Against the background of our knowledge about the reality at the beginnings of the 19th century the article analizes the humboldtian presentation of this reality during his stay in Cuba (1801/1804), confronting it with his "Essay" about Cuba (1826-1831), as well tries to demonstrate the position of Humboldt in the historical thinking. The third part explains the relations of Humboldt to the network of Cuban intellectuals and with some important personalities of the Cuban elite (Arango, Calvo) in the development of his work.
