Annite and Fe-rich siderophyllite constitute the rock-forming micas in the late-Variscan composite granite pluton of Konigshain, Lausitz, Germany. This multiphase pluton is composed of three fractionated, but not chemically specialized monzogranite types, which contain lithophile elements such as Li, Rb, Cs, Sn, and F in average quantities. Abundant miarolitic pegmatites of the NYF family with a broad diversity of rare minerals occur in the apical part of the pluton. These pegmatitic cavities locally contain di- and trioctabedral micas as well as cation-deficient micas. Trioctahedral micas comprise F-rich manganoan lithian siderophyllite to manganoan zinnwaldite, zinnwaldite, and minor lepidolite. The formula [calculated on the basis of 22 anion valencies and 2 (F + OH + Cl)] of the most Mn-rich siderophyllite is (K0.85Rb0.08Na0.04)(0.97)(Al0.99Li0.91Fe0.51Mn0.42Ti0.01Zn0.01)(2.85) (Si3.21Al0.79)(4)O- 10(F1.80OH0.19Cl0.01)(2). This mica constitutes one of the most Mn-rich siderophyllite compositions reported to date. The lithium micas poorer in Mn are distinguished by elevated concentrations of Rb (up to 2.5 wt % Rb2O), CS (UP to 1.2 wt % Cs2O), and F (up to 9.6 wt %). This fluorine content is probably consistent with the maximum possible F occupation of 2 of the (F,OH,Cl)-site. The structural formula of the most Li-rich lepidolite is (K0.83Rb0.07Cs0.03)(0.93) (Li1.62Al1.00Fe0.38)(3.00)(Si3.62Al0.38)(4) O-10(F1.91OH0.09)(2). During hydrothermal alteration, lepidolite and zinnwaldite became partially depleted in K, Li, Rb, Cs, and F and gradually transformed into cation-deficient micas (lithian phengite to illite of phengitic affinity)
Conformational changes associated with the assembly of recombinant ;2-microglobulin in vitro under acidic conditions were investigated using infrared spectroscopy and static and dynamic light scattering. In parallel, the morphology of the different aggregated species obtained under defined conditions was characterized by electron microscopy. The initial salt-induced aggregate form of ;2-microglobulin, composed of small oligomers (dimers to tetramers), revealed the presence of ;-strands organized in an intramolecular-like fashion. Further particle growth was accompanied by the formation of intermolecular ;-sheet structure and led to short curved forms. An increase in temperature by only 25 °C was able to disaggregate these assemblies, followed by the formation of longer filamentous structures. In contrast, a rise in temperature up to 100 °C was associated with a reorganization of the short curved forms at the level of secondary structure and the state of assembly, leading to a species with a characteristic infrared spectrum different from those of all the other aggregates observed before, suggesting a unique overall structure. The infrared spectral features of this species were nearly identical to those of ;2-microglobulin assemblies formed at low ionic strength with agitation, indicating the presence of fibrils, which was confirmed by electron microscopy. The observed spectroscopic changes suggest that the heat-triggered conversion of the short curved assemblies into fibrils involves a reorganization of the ;-strands from an antiparallel arrangement to a parallel arrangement, with the latter being characteristic of amyloid fibrils of ;2-microglobulin.
beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)m) is known to be the major component of fibrillar deposits in the joints of patients suffering from dialysis-related amyloidosis. We have developed a simplified procedure to convert monomeric recombinant beta(2)m into amyloid fibrils at physiological pH by a combination of stirring and heating, enabling us to follow conformational changes associated with the assembly by infrared spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Our studies reveal that fibrillogenesis begins with the formation of relatively large aggregates, with secondary structure not significantly altered by the stirring-induced association. In contrast, the conversion of the amorphous aggregates into amyloid fibrils is associated with a profound re-organization at the level of the secondary and tertiary structures, leading to non-native like parallel arrangements of the beta-strands in the fully formed amyloid structure of beta(2)m. This study highlights the power of an approach to investigate the formation of beta(2)m fibrils by a combination of biophysical techniques including IR spectroscopy.
Die Tagung HDI 2014 in Freiburg zur Hochschuldidaktik der Informatik HDI wurde erneut vom Fachbereich Informatik und Ausbildung / Didaktik der Informatik (IAD) in der Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V. (GI) organisiert. Sie dient den Lehrenden der Informatik in Studiengängen an Hochschulen als Forum der Information und des Austauschs über neue didaktische Ansätze und bildungspolitische Themen im Bereich der Hochschulausbildung aus der fachlichen Perspektive der Informatik.
Die HDI 2014 ist nun bereits die sechste Ausgabe der HDI. Für sie wurde das spezielle Motto „Gestalten und Meistern von Übergängen“ gewählt. Damit soll ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Übergänge von Schule zum Studium, vom Bachelor zum Master, vom Studium zur Promotion oder vom Studium zur Arbeitswelt gelegt werden.
Context. On March 4, 2013 the Fermi-EAT and AGILE reported a flare from the direction of the Crab nebula in which the high-energy (HE; E > 100 MeV) flux was six times above its quiescent level. Simultaneous observations in other energy bands give us hints about the emission processes during the flare episode and the physics of pulsar wind nebulae in general.
Aims. We search for variability in the emission of the Crab nebula at very-high energies (VHF,; E > 100 GeV), using contemporaneous data taken with the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes.
Methods. Observational data taken with the H.E.S.S. instrument on five consecutive days during the flare were analysed for the flux and spectral shape of the emission from the Crab nebula. Night-wise light curves are presented with energy thresholds of 1 TeV and 5 TeV.
Results. The observations conducted with H.E.S.S. on March 6 to March 10, 2013 show no significant changes in the flux. They limit the variation in the integral flux above 1 TeV to less than 63% and the integral flux above 5 TeV to less than 78% at a 95% confidence level.
