Während seiner Italienreise 1805 gelangte Humboldt erstmals nach Neapel, das mit dem Vesuv als idealer Ort für Studien über Vulkanismus und vulkanische Gesteine galt. Die Fragestellungen, die ihn ein Jahr nach seiner Amerikareise beschäftigten, lassen sich anhand von unveröffentlichten Texten (insbesondere aus seinem Italienischen Tagebuch) sowie von Objektbeispielen aus dem Museum für Naturkunde Berlin prüfen. In Neapel stand Humboldt in intensivem Gedankenaustausch mit Leopold von Buch. Dabei ging es vorrangig um eine Neuorientierung in der großen Wissenschaftsdebatte zwischen Neptunisten und Plutonisten. Diese Kontroverse prägte auch die Kontakte, die beide in Neapel zu Gelehrten und Sammlern aufbauten. Der wissenschaftshistorische Rahmen dieses Beitrags ist eine Rekonstruktion zeitgenössischer Kommunikationsformen, bei denen privaten Sammlungen eine wichtige Funktion für die Begegnung zwischen Forschern unterschiedlicher Provenienz und Orientierung zukam.

Der Erwerb der südamerikanischen Reisetagebücher Alexander von Humboldts durch die Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz war 2014 ein bedeutendes Ereignis. In einem ersten Schritt wertet der Artikel unveröffentlichte Teile der Tagebücher und Dokumente aus dem Nachlass aus, um den „Kosmos Humboldt´scher Interessen“ zum Thema Pflanzengeographie zu umreißen, darunter auch seine Überlegungen zum Einfluss von Mensch und Tier auf die Ausbreitung von Pflanzen und die Veränderung von Vegetation. Die Einsichten des Gelehrten zur Abhängigkeit Europas von der sogenannten „Neuen Welt“ hinsichtlich der Nahrungsmittel werden ebenso behandelt. So vertrat Humboldt in seinen Ausführungen zum Thema „Was sind Barbaren?“ die These, dass Isolierung von Menschen aus der Gemeinschaft, Elend, Nahrungsmangel, klimatische Ursachen usw. „die Spuren von Zivilisation vertilgen“. Er betonte, dass es nötig sein, in einem weltweiten Wettstreit intellektueller Kräfte die Ressourcenknappheit zu überwinden.

The Prussian geologist Leopold von Buch was a lifelong friend of Alexander von Humboldt and had a significant influence on Humboldt’s geological ideas. In a talk, held in Berlin in 1831, which is published here for the first time, von Buch presented the Duria Antiquior of 1830 by the English geologist Henry De La Beche. The Duria Antiquior is widely regarded as the earliest depiction of a scene of prehistoric life from deep time. The print raised new questions about the processes of geohistorical change. The talk reveals that Leopold von Buch was a true scientist of the Romantic Age. His descriptions of geohistorical organismic transformations are taken from pictorial examples of organismic transformation from the classical literature. The talk also illustrates how influential English geologists were for geo-historical reconstructions in Germany.
