Raman spectra of gas hydrates : differences and analogies to ice 1h and (gas saturated) water
(2005)
It is generally accepted that Raman spectroscopic investigations of gas hydrates provide vital information regarding the structure of the hydrate, hydrate composition and cage occupancies, but most research is focused on the vibrational spectra of the guest molecules. We show that the shape and position of the Raman signals of the host molecules (H2O) also contain useful additional information. In this study, Raman spectra (200-4000cm(-1)) of (mixed) gas hydrates with variable compositions and different structures are presented. The bands in the O-H stretching region (3000- 3800cm(-1)), the O-H bending region (1600-1700cm(-1)) and the O-O hydrogen bonded stretching region (100-400cm(-1)) are compared with the corresponding bands in Raman spectra of ice Ih and liquid water. The interpretation of the differences and similarities with respect to the crystal structure and possible interactions between guest and host molecules are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. We present an excerpt of the document "Quantum Information Processing and Communication: Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe", which has been recently published in electronic form at the website of FET (the Future and Emerging Technologies Unit of the Directorate General Information Society of the European Commission, http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fet/qipc-sr.htm). This document has been elaborated, following a former suggestion by FET, by a committee of QIPC scientists to provide input towards the European Commission for the preparation of the Seventh Framework Program. Besides being a document addressed to policy makers and funding agencies (both at the European and national level), the document contains a detailed scientific assessment of the state-of-the-art, main research goals, challenges, strengths, weaknesses, visions and perspectives of all the most relevant QIPC sub-fields, that we report here
Regional variation in nitrogen (N) deposition increases plant productivity and decreases species diversity, but landscape- or local -scale influences on N deposition are less well-known. Using ion-exchange resin, we measured variation of N deposition and soil N availability within Elk Island National Park in the ecotone between grassland and boreal forest in western Canada. The park receives regionally high amounts of atmospheric N deposition (22 kg ha(-1) yr(- 1)). N deposition was on average higher ton clay-rich luvisols than on brunisols, and areas burned 1-15 years previously received more atmospheric N than unburned sites. We suggest that the effects of previous fires and soil type on deposition rate act through differences in canopy structure. The magnitude of these effects varied with the presence of ungulate grazers (bison, moose, elk) and vegetation type (forest, shrubland, grassland). Available soil N (ammonium and nitrate) was higher in burned than unburned sites in the absence of grazing, suggesting an effect of deposition. On grazed sites, differences between fire treatments were small, presumably because the removal of biomass by grazers reduced the effect of fire. Aspen invades native grassland in this region, and our results suggest that fire without grazing might reinforce the expansion of forest into grassland facilitated by N deposition
Today, InfiniBand is an evolving high speed interconnect technology to build high performance computing clusters, that achieve top 10 rankings in the current top 500 of the worldwide fastest supercomputers. Network interfaces (called host channel adapters) provide transport layer services over connections and datagrams in reliable or unreliable manner. Additionally, InfiniBand supports remote direct memory access (RDMA) primitives that allow for one- sided communication. Using server load balancing together with a high performance cluster makes it possible to build a fast, scalable, and reliable service infrastructure. We have designed and implemented a scalable load balancer for InfiniBand clusters called SLIBNet. Our investigations show that the InfiniBand architecture offers features which perfectly support load balancing. We want to thank the Megware Computer GmbH for providing us an InfiniBand switch to realize a server load balancing testbed.
The calculation of heritabilities and genetic correlations, which are necessary for predicting evolutionary responses, requires knowledge about the relatedness between individuals. This information is often not directly available, especially not for natural populations, but can be inferred by using molecular markers such as allozymes. Several methods based on inferred relatedness from marker data have been developed to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations in natural populations. Most methods use maximum-likelihood procedures to assign pairs or groups of individuals to predefined discrete relatedness classes (e.g., half sibs and unrelated individuals). The Ritland method, on the other hand, uses method of moments estimators to estimate pairwise relatedness among individuals as continuous values. We tested both the Ritland method and a maximum-likelihood method by applying them to a greenhouse population consisting of seed families of the herb Mimulus guttatus and comparing the results to the ones from a frequently used standard method based on half-sib families. Estimates of genetic correlations were far from accurate, especially when we used the Ritland method. However, this study shows that even with a few variable allozyme loci, it is possible to get qualitatively good indications about the presence of heritable genetic variation from marker-based methods, even though both methods underestimated it
Synthesis, characterisation and theoretical calculations of 2,6-diaminopurine etheno derivatives
(2005)
Four derivatives of 2,6-diaminopurine (1) were synthesised and characterised. When 1 was reacted with chloroacetaldehyde, 5-aminoimidazo[2,1- i] purine (2), 9-aminoimidazo[2,1-b]purine (3), 9-aminoimidazo[1,2- a]purine (4) and diimidazo[2,1-b: 2', 1'-i]purine (5) were formed. The purified products (3 - 5) were fully characterised by MS, complete NMR assignments as well as fluorescence and UV spectroscopy. The purified, isolated yields of these products ( 3 - 5) varied from 2.5 to 30%. The relative stability of different tautomers was investigated by theoretical calculations. Fluorescence characteristics are also discussed and compared to the starting material 1 and a reference molecule 2-aminopurine
We consider networks of chaotic maps with different network topologies. In each case, they are coupled in such a way as to generate synchronized chaotic solutions. By using the methods of control of chaos we are controlling a single map into a predetermined trajectory. We analyze the reaction of the network to such a control. Specifically we show that a line of one-dimensional logistic maps that are unidirectionally coupled can be controlled from the first oscillator whereas a ring of diffusively coupled maps cannot be controlled for more than 5 maps. We show that rings with more elements can be controlled if every third map is controlled. The dependence of unidirectionally coupled maps on noise is studied. The noise level leads to a finite synchronization lengths for which maps can be controlled by a single location. A two-dimensional lattice is also studied. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics
