Zum Umschlag der Gefühle

Both the stoichiometry and complex stability constants of crown ether complexes with metal ions have been determined by examining gradual changes in their diffusional behavior in nonaqueous solution. Diffusion coefficients, D, were evaluated by pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR titration experiments whilst complex stability constants were determined by nonlinear curve-fitting procedures, D versus csol., which also allow the treatment of multiple complexation equilibria (1:1 to 1:2 stoichiometries). Differences in the diffusion coefficients of the various free crown ethers with respect to their metal ion complexes indicate great sensitivity to both conformational changes and changes in molecular size upon complexation.
The power of business

Polymer foams with electrically charged cellular voids, the so-called ferroelectrets, are soft piezoelectric transducer materials. Several polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate or cyclo-olefin copolymers are under investigation with respect to their suitability as ferroelectrets. Here, the authors report an additional ferroelectret polymer, cellular polyethylene-naphthalate (PEN), which was prepared from commercial uniform polymer films by means of foaming in supercritical carbon dioxide, inflation, biaxial stretching, electrical charging, and metallization. Piezoelectric d(33) coefficients of up to 140 pC/N demonstrate the suitability of such cellular PEN films for transducer applications. Their piezoelectricity is partially stable at elevated temperatures as high as 100 degrees C.
We examined relations between eye movements (single-fixation durations) and RSVP-based event-related potentials (ERPs; N400s) recorded during reading the same sentences in two independent experiments. Longer fixation durations correlated with larger N400 amplitudes. Word frequency and predictability of the fixated word as well as the predictability of the upcoming word accounted for this covariance in a path-analytic model. Moreover, larger N400 amplitudes entailed longer fixation durations on the next word, a relation accounted for by word frequency. This pattern offers a neurophysiological correlate for the lag-word frequency effect on fixation durations: word processing is reliably expressed not only in fixation durations on currently fixated words, but also in those on subsequently fixated words.
The list contains all the identified fungi collections of the excursion in 1998. In it were also included some records published by OTTO (2001) and few unpublished data of fungi mainly collected by V. Otte after 1998. Unless other information is given, all the fungal collections and their determination were done by the author. Most of the collections are integrated as exsiccata in the herbarium of the author.
Some aspects of the fungal flora in the Bol'Üoj Tha; area (NW-Caucasus) - During an excursion to the Bol'soj Tha; area in north-western Caucasus in the late summer of 1998 a number of mycological observations were made. 111 macrofungi species (30 ascomycetes, 81 basidiomycetes), 16 myxomycetes and 42 phytoparasitic fungi (15 Erysiphales, 27 Uredinales) were registered. The majority of the recorded macromycetes were decomposers of dead stems and logs of different trees and shrubs, especially of the dominating tree species Fagus orientalis and Abies nordmanniana. Bondarzewia montana, Hericium alpestre and Phellinus hartigii are typical colonisers of old Abies trunks and therefore of special interest. They were recorded several times, especially in the primeval forests of the excursion area. Some of the collected taxa like Daldinia petriniae, Hypoxylon cercidicola, H. liviae, Ophiostoma polyporicola, Pezoloma marchantiae, Ramsbottomia macracantha, Symphyosyria angelicae, Auriporia aurulenta, Flagelloscypha pilatii, Hymenochaete carpatica, Marasmius cf. rhododendrorum and Pellidiscus pallidus are discussed in detail. Some of the recorded taxa are probably new for the western Caucasus and in some cases also for Russia.
The influence of coating polystyrene tissue culture plates with different proteins on murine hybridoma cell growth and antibody production was investigated. Fibronectin, collagen I, bovine serum albumin and laminin were used to coat NUNC and COSTAR cell culture plates. Cell number and antibody concentration in culture fluids were quantified as indicators for cell viability, proliferation and productivity. Adhesive behaviour, morphology, expression of surface receptors of hybridoma cells and the presence of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in cell lysates were characterized by cell adhesion experiments, microscopy, flow cytometry and Western Blot analysis. It was shown that coatings with fibronectin (0.2 ;g/ml) lead to a substantial improvement of cell growth by 50-70% and an increase of monoclonal antibody production by 100-120%. Collagen I coatings showed an improvement in cell growth by 30-70% and by 60% for the production of monoclonal antibodies. Coatings with BSA and laminin had minor effects on these parameters. It was found that the hybridoma cell lines used in this study did not express the ;2-chain of the ;2;1-integrin, which is responsible for binding to collagen and laminin. However, the presence of ;1- integrin on the cell surface was shown, which should enable hybridoma cells to bind fibronectin. We propose, therefore, that fibronectin adsorption to cell culture materials may be a promising approach to enhance the production of monoclonal antibodies by cultivated hybridoma cells.
Temperature dependent energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction and magnetic study of Fe/Al interface
(2007)
In situ temperature dependent energy-dispersive structural and magnetic study of electron beam evaporated Fe/Al multilayer sample (MLS) has been investigated. The structural studies show the formation of an intermixed FeAl transition layer of a few nanometers thick at the interface during deposition, which on annealing at 300 degrees C transforms to B2FeAl intermetallic phase. Magnetization decreases with increase in temperature and drops to minimum above 300 degrees C due to increase in anti-ferromagnetic interlayer coupling and formation of nonmagnetic FeAl phase at the interface. The Curie temperature (T-c) is found to be 288 degrees C and is much less than that of bulk bcc Fe.

In this paper we present the design and implementation of the Migol brokering framework. Migol is a Grid middleware, which addresses the fault-tolerance of long-running and compute-intensive applications. The framework supports e. g. the automatic and transparent recovery respectively the migration of applications. Another core feature of Migol is the discovery, selection, and allocation of resources using advance reservation. Grid broker systems can significantly benefit from advance reservation. With advance reservation brokers and users can obtain execution guarantees from local resource management systems (LRM) without requiring detailed knowledge of current and future workloads or of the resource owner's policies. Migol's Advance Reservation Service (ARS) provides an adapter layer for reservation capabilities of different LRMs, which is currently not provided by existing Grid middleware platforms. Further, we propose a shortest expected delay (SED) strategy for scheduling of advance reservations within the Job Broker Service. SED needs information about the earliest start time of an application. This is currently not supported by LRMs. We added this feature for PBSPro. Migol depends on Globus and its security infrastructure. Our performance experiments show the substantial overhead of this serviceoriented approach.

Extremophilic organisms are gaining increasing interest because of their unique metabolic capacities and great biotechnological potential. The unicellular acidophilic and mesothermophilic red alga Galdieria sulphuraria (074G) can grow autotrophically in light as well as heterotrophically in the dark. In this paper, the effects of externally added glucose on primary and secondary photosynthetic reactions are assessed to elucidate mixotrophic capacities of the alga. Photosynthetic O-2 evolution was quantified in an open system with a constant Supply Of CO2 to avoid rapid volatilization of dissolved inorganic carbon at low pH levels. In the presence of glucose, O-2 evolution was repressed even in illuminated cells. Ratios of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence (F-v/F-m) and 77 Kfluorescence spectra indicated a reduced photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. The results were corroborated by strongly reduced levels of the photosystem 11 reaction centre protein D1. The downregulation of primary photosynthetic reactions was accompanied by reduced levels of the Calvin Cycle enzyme ribu lose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylaselfoxygenase (Rubisco). Both effects depended on functional sugar uptake and are thus initiated by intracellular rather than extracellular glucose. Following glucose depletion, photosynthetic O-2 evolution of illuminated cells commenced after 15 h and Rubisco levels again reached the levels of autotrophic cells. It is concluded that true mixotrophy, involving electron transport across both photosystems, does not occur in G. sulphuraria 074G, and that heterotrophic growth is favoured over autotrophic growth if sufficient organic carbon is available.
Peridinin-chlorophyll a protein (PCP) is a unique water soluble antenna complex that employs the carotenoid peridinin as the main light-harvesting pigment. In the present study the near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectrum of PCP was recorded at the carbon Kedge. Additionally, the NEXAFS spectra of the constituent pigments, chlorophyll a and peridinin, were measured. The energies of the lowest unoccupied molecular levels of these pigments appearing in the carbon NEXAFS spectrum were resolved. Individual contributions of the pigments and the protein to the measured NEXAFS spectrum of PCP were determined using a "building block" approach combining NEXAFS spectra of the pigments and the amino acids constituting the PCP apoprotein. The results suggest that absorption changes of the pigments in the carbon near K-edge region can be resolved following excitation using a suitable visible pump laser pulse. Consequently, it may be possible to study excitation energy transfer processes involving "optically dark" states of carotenoids in pigment-protein complexes by soft X-ray probe optical pump double resonance spectroscopy (XODR).
The trithiocarbonate 2-(benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanyl) propanoic acid is formed as minor by-product in the synthesis of the dithioester 2-((2-phenylthioacetyl)sulfanyl) propanoic acid via the Grignard route. The mechanism for this side reaction is not clear. The isolated trithiocarbonate may act as unsymmetrical but bifunctional RAFT agent in the aqueous polymerization of N,N-dimethyl acrylamide. Therefore, it is important to separate it completely from the dithioester before engaging the latter in controlled free radical polymerization to guarantee a maximum control.
Zerstörungsfreie Tomographie von Raumladungs- und Polarisationsverteilungen mittles Wärmepulsen

Non-destructive, three-dimensional imaging of space-charge and polarization distributions in electret materials has been implemented by means of laser-induced thermal pulses. In pyroelectric films of poled poly(vinylidene fluoride), images of up to 45 x 45 pixels with a depth resolution of less than 0.5 mu m and a lateral resolution of 40 mu m were recorded, the latter being limited by fast thermal diffusion in the absorbing metallic front electrode. Initial applications include the analysis of polarization distributions in corona-poled piezoelectric sensor cables and the detection of patterned space-charge distributions in polytetrafluoroethylene films.
Multinuclear dynamic NMR spectroscopy of 3,5-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-1,3,5-oxadiazinane (3) revealed the existence of two conformers with differently oriented CF3 groups with respect to the ring, and two dynamic processes: ring inversion and restricted rotation about the N-S bond. Two transition states connecting the two conformers and corresponding to clockwise and counterclockwise rotations about the N-S bond were found; the calculated activation barriers of about 12 kcal/mol are in excellent agreement with those measured experimentally for the related molecule 1,3,5-tris(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-1,3,5-triazinane (1). X-ray analysis proved the existence of the symmetric isomer of 3, which is the minor isomer in solutions but the only one in the crystal due to packing effects. The normal Perlin effect (JCHax < JCHeq)observed for 2(6)-CH2 in 3, whereas the reversed Perlin effect was found for the 4-CH2 group in 3 as well as for all CH2 groups in 1 both experimentally and theoretically. The latter effect in compounds 1, 3, and 1- (methylsulfonyl)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-1,3,5-triazinane (2) can be considered as a genuine reverse Perlin effect since larger values of 1JCH are observed for longer C-H bonds.
Charging properties and time-temperature stability of innovative polymeric cellular ferroelectrets
(2007)
After appropriate mechanical and electrical treatments, some cellular polymers become able to retain space charge for a long time, i.e. they acquire electret behavior. The electrical treatment consists of charging under high levels of DC electric field. The mechanical treatment, based on the application of stretching forces to cellular polymer slabs that were before expanded under pressurized gas, affects the cavity size and shape, and therefore also the effectiveness of the charging process itself. An investigation of charging mechanisms, as well as of mechanical treatment, is therefore fundamental for optimizing the ferro- and piezo-electret properties. The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of the physical dimension of the cavities on the charging behavior of cellular ferroelectrets and to focus on the time-temperature stability for two families of polymeric cellular ferroelectrets based on polypropylene (PP) and on a cyclo-olefin copolymer (COC). Emphasis will be given to the stretching process and in particular to the expansion rate applied during the manufacturing process (which affects the radial dimension and the height of the cavities, respectively). Space-charge and partial-discharge measurements as a function of time and temperature are the main tools to infer the influence of the cavity size on charging and stability characteristics.
The present study aimed to examine the extent to which the co-occurrence of ADHD and smoking in adolescents could be attributed to common genetic, environmental and psychopathological factors. Data are from an ongoing prospective study of the outcome of early risk factors. At age 15 years, 305 adolescents completed self-report questionnaires measuring tobacco consumption and deviant peer affiliations. Lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were obtained using standardized interviews. DNA was genotyped for the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) gene exon III polymorphism. Adolescents with a lifetime diagnosis of ADHD displayed significantly higher smoking activity than non-ADHD controls. A major component of this association could be accounted for by deviant peer affiliations and the comorbidity with oppositional-defiant and conduct disorder, while a minor part was attributable to DRD4 in males but not in females. These findings suggest that the association of ADHD with smoking relies on risk factors shared by the two behaviors.
Experiments using a simple X-ray interferometer to measure the degree of spatial coherence of hard X-rays are reported. A monolithic Fresnel bimirror is used at small incidence angles to investigate synchrotron radiation in the energy interval 5-50 keV with monochromatic and white beam. The experimental setup was equivalent to a Young's double-slit experiment for hard X-rays with slit dimensions in the micrometre range. From the high-contrast interference pattern the degree of coherence was determined.
We present projects for future space missions using new quantum devices based on ultracold atoms. They will enable fundamental physics experiments testing quantum physics, physics beyond the standard model of fundamental particles and interactions, special relativity, gravitation and general relativity.
The CER market survey simulation tools in production and logistics' was realized in February/March 2007 in cooperation with different software suppliers. It is based on a list of seven questions in different subareas. Besides product information there were questions concerning typical customer scenarios, special features, import and export interfaces as well as tool requirements.
The conformations of N-benzylideneani lines p-X-C6H4-CH=N-C6H4 p-Y (X, Y = NO2, CN, CF3, F, Cl, Br, H, Me, OMe, NMe2) have been studied by B3LYP density functional (DFT) hybrid method in combination with the 6-31G* or 6-311G* split valence basis set. The twist of the plane of the aniline ring with respect to the other part of the molecule (tau(2)) is systematically controlled by substituents X and Y, the effect of Y being larger. The value of the dihedral angle tau(2), correlates nicely with equation tau(2) = rho(F)(Y)(x)sigma(F)(Y)+rho(+R)(Y)(x)sigma(+)(R)(Y) + k(x) or tau(2) = rho(F)(X)(y)sigma(F)(X)+rho(-)(R)(X)(y)sigma(+)(R)(X) + k(y), respectively, when aniline or benzylidene substituent is varied. ED substituents X diminish the sensitivity of tau(2) to the aniline substituent Y[rho(F)(Y)(x) and rho(+)(R)(Y)(x)] while ED substituents Y increase the sensitivity Of T2 to the benzylidene substituent X[rho(F)(X)(y) and rho(+)(R)(X)(y)]. There seems to be two competitive conjugative interactions for the aniline ring n electrons: one with the nitrogen lone pair and one with the C=N unit. Substituents X and Y adjust the extent of these interactions and therefore the conformation of the molecule. A good correlation is observed between the dihedral angle tau(2) and the experimental C-13 NMR chemical shift of the C=N carbon of N-benzylideneanilines in CDCl3 (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. A new synthetic approach to 2,3-dihydro-4H-1,3-thiazine derivatives based upon reductive rearrangement of 1,2- dithiole-3-ylidene thiones has been developed. In turn, the 1,2-dithiole derivatives were prepared by an efficient ring- opening-closing process of 2-alkylidene-4-oxothiazolidines, induced in the presence of Lawesson's reagent by intramolecular non-bonded 1,5-type S...O interactions in the 4-oxothiazolidine precursors.
