Impacts of agricultural land use on the environment are various and do not contribute to modifications of the ecology of central European landscapes. They do not only cause a progressive reduction of the number of plant ans animal specis typical for central Europe. Ever since the increasing intensification of farming, from the application of large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides to the use of increasingly larger machinery and progressive specialization there has also been an increase of other, hitherto little noticed environmental impacts. Heavy machinery and cultivation during disadvantageous weather will provoke soil compaction. Unvarying crop rotation systems and plouging of terrain too steep for it will increase water erosion. Due to groundwater lowering former peat lands are increasingly prone to desiccation and thus extremely susceptible to wind erosion. High rates of fertilizer application contiuously increase the risk of nitrate eluviation into the groundwater. These hazards are explained and measures of reduction are shown. The latter are indeed compatible with the aims of intensive farming but with less negative consequences for the environment. Above all they make sure that future generations will be able to continue farming the agricultural lands of central Europe that have been under cultivation for thousands of years.

The evolution of the closed Friedmann Universe with a packet of short scalar waves is considered with the help of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The packet ensures conservation of homogeneity and isotropy of the metric on average. It is shown that during tunneling the amplitudes of short waves of a scalar field can increase catastrophically promptly if their influence to the metric is not taken into account. This effect is similar to the Rubakov-effect of catastrophic particle creation calculated already in 1984. In our approach to the problem it is possible to consider a self- consistent dynamics of the expansion of the Universe and amplification of short waves. It results in a decrease of the barrier and interruption of amplification of waves, and we get an exit of the wave function from the quantum to the classically available region.
Transition to Coherence in Populations of Coupled Chaotic Oscillators: A Linear Response Approach
(2001)
We consider the collective dynamics in an ensemble of globally coupled chaotic maps. The transition to the coherent state with a macroscopic mean field is analyzed in the framework of the linear response theory. The linear response function for the chaotic system is obtained using the perturbation approach to the Frobenius-Perron operator. The transition point is defined from this function by virtue of the self-excitation condition for the feedback loop. Analytical results for the coupled Bernoulli maps are confirmed by the numerics.
The transition from fully synchronized behavior to two-cluster dynamics is investigated for a system of N globally coupled chaotic oscillators by means of a model of two coupled logistic maps. An uneven distribution of oscillators between the two clusters causes an asymmetry to arise in the coupling of the model system. While the transverse period-doubling bifurcation remains essentially unaffected by this asymmetry, the transverse pitchfork bifurcation is turned into a saddle-node bifurcation followed by a transcritical riddling bifurcation in which a periodic orbit embedded in the synchronized chaotic state loses its transverse stability. We show that the transcritical riddling transition is always hard. For this, we study the sequence of bifurcations that the asynchronous point cycles produced in the saddle-node bifurcation undergo, and show how the manifolds of these cycles control the magnitude of asynchronous bursts. In the case where the system involves two subpopulations of oscillators with a small mismatch of the parameters, the transcritical riddling will be replaced by two subsequent saddle-node bifurcations, or the saddle cycle involved in the transverse destabilization of the synchronized chaotic state may smoothly shift away from the synchronization manifold. In this way, the transcritical riddling bifurcation is substituted by a symmetry-breaking bifurcation, which is accompanied by the destruction of a thin invariant region around the symmetrical chaotic state.
This work is an introduction to anisotropic spaces, which have an ω-weight of analytic functions and are generalizations of Lipshitz classes in the polydisc. We prove that these classes form an algebra and are invariant with respect to monomial multiplication. These operators are bounded in these (Lipshitz and Djrbashian) spaces. As an application, we show a theorem about the division by good-inner functions in the mentioned classes is proved.
Research on monolayers of amphiphilic lipids on aqueous solution is of basic importance in surface science. Due to the applicability of a variety of surface sensitive techniques, floating insoluble monolayers are very suitable model systems for the study of order, structure formation and material transport in two dimensions or the interactions of molecules at the interface with ions or molecules in the bulk (headword 'molecular recognition'). From the behavior of monolayers conclusions can be drawn on the properties of lipid layers on solid substrates or in biological membranes. This work deals with specific and fundamental interactions in monolayers both on the molecular and on the microscopic scale and with their relation to the lattice structure, morphology and thermodynamic behavior of monolayers at the air-water interface. As model system especially monolayers of long chain fatty acids are used, since there the molecular interactions can be gradually adjusted by varying the degree of dissociation by means of the suphase pH value. For manipulating the molecular interactions besides the subphase composition also temperature and monolayer composition are systematically varied. The change in the monolayer properties as a function of an external parameter is analyzed by means of isotherm and surface potential measurements, Brewster-angle microscopy, X-ray diffraction at grazing incidence and polarization modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. For this a quantitative measure for the molecular interactions and for the chain conformational order is derived from the X-ray data. The most interesting results of this work are the elucidation of the origin of regular polygonal and dendritic domain shapes, the various effects of cholesterol on molecular packing and lattice order of long chain amphiphiles, as well as the detection of an abrupt change in the head group bonding interactions, the chain conformational order and the phase transition pressure between tilted phases in fatty acid monolayers near pH 9. For the interpretation of the latter point a model of the head group bonding structure in fatty acid monolayers as a function of the pH value is developed.

We describe automatic procedures for the selection of DA white dwarfs in the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). For this purpose, and the selection of other stellar objects (e.g., metal-poor stars and carbon stars), a flexible, robust algorithm for detection of stellar absorption and emission lines in the digital spectra of the HES was developed. Broad band (U-B, B-V) and intermediate band (Strömgren c_1) colours can be derived directly from HES spectra, with precisions of sigma U-B=0.092 mag; sigma B-V=0.095 mag; sigma c_1=0.15 mag. We describe simulation techniques that allow one to convert model or slit spectra to HES spectra. These simulated objective-prism spectra are used to determine quantitative selection criteria, and for the study of selection functions. We present an atlas of simulated HES spectra of DA and DB white dwarfs. Our current selection algorithm is tuned to yield maximum efficiency of the candidate sample (minimum contamination with non-DAs). DA candidates are selected in the B-V versus U-B and c_1 versus W_lambda (Hbeta +Hgamma +Hdelta ) parameter spaces. The contamination of the resulting sample with hot subdwarfs is expected to be as low as ~ 8%, while there is essentially no contamination with main sequence or horizontal branch stars. We estimate that with the present set of criteria, ~ 80% of DAs present in the HES database are recovered. A yet higher degree of internal completeness could be reached at the expense of higher contamination. However, the external completeness is limited by additional losses caused by proper motion effects and the epoch differences between direct and spectral plates used in the HES. Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla and Paranal, Chile.
