Die historische Forschung hat seit längerem herausgearbeitet, dass Migration nichts von einer Norm Abweichendes ist, sondern vielmehr ein »konstitutives Element der Menschheitsgeschichte« (J. Oltmer), der Mensch mithin stets ein »homo migrans« (K.-J. Bade) war. Auch die Geschichte Brandenburgs wurde seit jeher von Einwanderungsprozessen geprägt. Von »Toleranz« im modernen Sinne kann freilich keine Rede sein, sondern meistens ging es um ökonomisch nutzbringende Aufnahme bestimmter Gruppen. Sehr oft waren die Ansiedlungen aber auch das Ergebnis von Flucht, Vertreibung und kriegerischer Gewalt. Der vorliegende Band zeigt anhand von Beispielen vom frühen Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart die Bedeutung der Zuwanderung für Brandenburg auf. Der Bogen reicht von der slawischen Einwanderung des 8./9. Jahrhunderts bis zur Ankunft russisch-jüdischer »Kontingentflüchtlinge« im Gefolge der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, von Niederländern, Juden, Hugenotten, Revolutionsflüchtlingen in der Frühen Neuzeit bis hin zu Muslimen, Zwangsarbeitern, Vertriebenen und DDR-»Fremdarbeitern« im 20. Jahrhundert – eine Geschichte der Vielfalt des brandenburgischen Raumes und seiner Bevölkerung im Spiegel der Zuwanderung.
Nachdem Kaiser Karl IV. 1373 seinem Schwiegersohn, Markgraf Otto dem Faulen von Brandenburg, dessen Fürstentum abgenommen hatte, ließ er 1375/76 das sogenannte Landbuch der Mark Brandenburg in lateinischer Sprache anlegen. Es ist eine Zusammenstellung der Burgen, Städte, Dörfer, Ritter, Gerichte, Dienste, Rechte, Zölle und anderer Einkünfte, die dem Markgrafen von Brandenburg damals noch gehörten. Denn vieles davon war von seinen Vorgängern seit dem 13. Jahrhundert zur Beschaffung von Geld bereits an Adlige, Geistliche, Städte und Bürger verpfändet oder verkauft worden. Diese für die spätmittelalterliche Geschichte der Mark Brandenburg äußerst wichtige Quelle ist nur noch in drei Abschriften - von denen zwei aus dem Ende des 14.¿Jahrhunderts stammen, während eine weitere zwischen 1420 und 1450 entstand - im Geheimen Staatsarchiv in Berlin-Dahlem überliefert. Der Text des Landbuches wurde 1781, 1856 und 1940 veröffentlicht. Hier liegt der Nachdruck der Edition von Johannes Schultze des allgemeinen Teils - ohne die Dorfregister - erstmals mit einer deutschen Übersetzung vor. Herausgeber und Verlag hoffen, damit den Heimat- und Ortshistorikern sowie allen an der brandenburgischen Geschichte Interessierten die Arbeit mit dieser wichtigen Quelle zu erleichtern.
