In Alexander von Humboldts Tagebüchern seiner berühmten Forschungsreise durch Spanisch-Amerika finden sich Bemerkungen und Hinweise für künftige Leser seiner Reisedarstellungen zu Problemen der Verpflegung. Zumeist werden Engpässe und Missstände erwähnt sowie Fragen soziopolitischer Situation verdeutlicht. Sie beziehen sich auf Extrembedingungen in stadtfernen Gebieten und im Kontakt mit den indigenen Trägern und Helfern während der einzelnen Exkursionen. Die Darstellungen der alltäglichen Gegebenheiten sind zugleich eine interessante Quelle für Verhaltensmuster der verschiedenen Schichten der spanischkolonialen Gesellschaft wie der Forschungsreisenden, die mit den Schwierigkeiten umzugehen hatten, sich anzupassen verstanden oder ihre eigenen Verhaltensmuster entwickelt haben. Damit ermöglichen Humboldts Aufzeichnungen zugleich auch auf diesem Gebiet manchen Blick auf den seither erfolgten Kulturwandel.
La visión que tuvo Alejandro de Humboldt del arte indígena se la puede conocer por medio de sus notas en los diarios de viaje – que gracias a la laboriosa actividad de Margot Faak son accesibles – y sus publicaciones. Se observa que el erudito alemán tuvo problenas de comprender los objetos arqueológicos de la América prehispánica como piezas de arte, por causa de su educación humanística que favoreció la antigüedad clásica greco-romana como la medida estética. Sin embargo, luchó en favor del mantenimiento de tales objetos caracterizándolos como monumentos históricos.
In der Moderne gilt die instrumentelle Vernunft als eine Bedingung für Objektivität und Rationalität. Der Vortrag wendet sich anhand dieser Überlegung der Frage zu, in welcher Weise sie die Begegnung mit dem Fremden um 1800 prägt und welche Organisationsformen von Wissen sie zur Voraussetzung hat. Wie gestalten die Repräsentationen europäischer Wissensbestände jenen globalen Bezugsrahmen aus, in dem die Reiseberichte und -tagebücher Alexander von Humboldts heute stehen? Seine Aufzeichnungen über die Eroberung der Neuen Welt, so die These, stellen das Verhältnis der europäischen Sinnwelt zur vermeintlichen Unmittelbarkeit des Augenscheins und zur Welt der Sinne in den Mittelpunkt. Durch einen Vergleich mit den Schriften Georg Forsters wird darüber hinaus deutlich, in welcher Weise an der Wende des 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert ein Wandel der Darstellungsformen eingeleitet worden ist, der über das Genre des Reiseberichts weit hinausweist.
Humboldt's works on Mexico

Humboldt wrote about Mexico from the perspective of a scientific explorer and naturalist. His works include his diaries, the Essai politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne, the Tablas géograficas, the Vues des Cordillères and a geographic atlas. Concerning the scientific aspect, the lack of a section on Mexico in the Relation historique is not a real deficit, since this can be found in the Essai. But only the diaries and letters from the journey, both published by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Centre, Berlin, can be considered an adequate substitute. The following will show the origin of Humboldt's writings on Mexico, offer historical and bibliographical facts and present the publications "Beiträge zur Alexander von Humboldt-Forschung", as well as Humboldt’s handwritten estate as far as they are available to us.
In einer Erstedition wird das bisher als verschollen gegoltene Tagebuch Alexander von Humboldts über seine gemeinsame Reise mit Georg Forster nach England vorgelegt. Bei der Bearbeitung wurde deutlich, dass die Aufzeichnungen Humboldts kein Tagebuch im eigentlichen Sinne sind. Sie gleichen eher einer Sammlung wissenschaftlicher Fakten. Mit Hilfe der umfangreichen Aufzeichnungen Georg Forsters konnten die Aufzeichnungen Humboldts zeitlich eingeordnet werden. Zugleich machte die Bearbeitung deutlich, dass zahlreiche Fakten, die Humboldt auf der Englandreise gesammelt hatte, in späteren Werken und Arbeiten ihre Widerspiegelung gefunden haben.

Der Grundstein für die Edition der Tagebücher Humboldts wurde ab 1958 durch die Transkription aller 9 Tagebuchbände gelegt. Die Auswahlausgabe der amerikanischen Reisetagebücher Humboldts begann 1982 mit der Publikation der gesellschaftskritischen Äußerungen zum spanischen Kolonialsystem, zwei weitere Bände (Texte und Kommentar) sollten den unvollständig gebliebenen, auf Venezuela beschränkten gedruckten Reisebericht, "Relation historique", ergänzen. In dem hier vorgestellten Band sind die Texte publiziert, die dem gedruckten Reisebericht entsprechen. Der Vergleich zwischen Tagebüchern und Druck zeigt eine strukturelle Identität. Die Ereignisschilderung bezieht die wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten mit ein und stellt sie nicht selten in den Mittelpunkt. Inhaltlich ergibt sich ein Unterschied in der Substanz. Persönliche Erlebnisse, politisches Urteil und wissenschaftliche Ausführungen sind nicht immer identisch. Der Text des Bandes wurde in 12 Kapitel unterteilt. Den lokalen Rahmen bilden die Abreise aus Paris 1798 und die Ankunft auf Kuba 1800. Die Ausführungen dienen der geographischen Erschließung des Landes, wobei das ethnologische Moment eine große Rolle spielt. Die angehängten Kommentare unterstützen das Verständnis der Texte, vier Register dienen ihrer leichteren Erschließung.
Carlos Montúfar (1780-1816) war ab Quito das dritte ständige Mitglied der amerikanischen Humboldt-Expedition zusammen mit Aimé Bonpland. Das Tagebuch, das er vom 9. Juni bis zum 10. September 1802 kurz vor Cajamarca führte, ist von Interesse für Humboldt-Forscher, zumal Bonpland scheinbar keine Zeugnisse weder in Brief- noch in Tagebuchform überlieferte. Recherchen am Original des Montúfar-Tagebuchs ergaben, dass die 1888 veröffentlichte Transkription durch Marcos Jiménez de la Espada aus verschiedenen Gründen problematisch ist. Es muss deshalb ein Desiderat der Humboldt-Forschung sein, eine korrigierte und kommentierte Transkription vorzulegen. Das geschieht hier zusammen mit einer digitalisierten Kopie des Originals
Als Alexander von Humboldt im Juni 1802 von Quito aus zum Rest seiner lateinamerikanischen Forschungsreise aufbrach, begleitete ihn, abgesehen von Aimé Bonpland, Carlos Montúfar bis nach Europa zurück begleitet, u.a. auch auf beim Versuch, den Chimborazo zu ersteigen. Bis kurz vor der Stadt Cajamarca im heutigen Peru schrieb Montúfar ein relativ unbekanntes Tagebuch zur Reise. Nach einem kurzen Ausflug in das Leben von Humboldts Begleiter steht im Zentrum der weiteren Ausführungen die Frage, ob sein Tagebuch ein anderes Licht auf Humboldt und speziell auf den Aufstiegsversuch wirft. Das läuft auf einen Vergleich der Tagebücher der beiden Reisegefährten hinaus und auf den Versuch, die scheinbaren Widersprüche aufzulösen.
