- The five school internships (Schulpraktische Studien) students at the University of Potsdam are required to do as part of their teacher training, are connected through the model of a so-called spiral curriculum. Acquiring professional competences is seen as a longterm and ongoing process in the two phases of teacher training and the tertiary level. This paper seeks to locate some of the spiral curriculum’s historical and systematic positions, and further tries to illustrate how these positions are reflected in the challenges faced in teacher education. With the help of three guiding principles – acquiring subject-specific and interdisciplinary knowledge as well as individual competences – the coherent whole of the internships’ curricular goals, contents and methods will be systematised and connected in the context of the spiral curriculum.
