  • This article provides an overview of similarities and differences of local and regional indicator systems for sustainability. While there is a high degree of correspondence in basic matters (e.g., the definition of sustainable development), there are differences regarding the substance dealt with and the choice of indicators. A table presents characteristics of existing indicator systems and contains valuable information for local actors who plan to introduce such a system. Finally, it is concluded that currently indicator systems at the local level fall short of expectations and lag behind their possibilities. The article discusses reasons and presents a modular structure of indicator systems taking into account target groups and functions.
