Two short typescripts by G. Lukacs from the archive, dating from 1941/42, shed light on his appraisal of the cultural ‘inner reserves’ of Germany and the ‘moral reserves’ of the democracies involved in the Second World War, as well as on Lukacs’s political philosophy at that time. The conception of an intrinsic interrelation of a humanist philosophical anthropology and rationalist epistemology elucidates his egalitarian and democratic account. Both texts are located within the intellectual development of the author in an introduction by the editor, which sketches the historical background and indicates relevant contemporaneous theoretical and political debates, such as the controversies over realism and humanism and also a dispute with K. Jaspers on German collective guilt.

Ramón Campos fue un autor muy influenciado por la corriente sensualista del
pensamiento lingüístico francés, el que había incluso llevado a sus extremos más
radicales. Para él, la abstracción se llevaba a cabo por medio de las palabras, del
lenguaje articulado, sin intervención del pensamiento. Los nombres adjetivos son en su
origen sustantivos. La memoria y la formación de las ideas generales son efectos del
don de la palabra, y de ningún modo operaciones del pensamiento. El lenguaje de
acción no es suficiente para la operación de la abstracción. La tendencia del
pensamiento hacia la concretización hace cundir las abstracciones. Ninguna palabra
dependiente o referencial es palabra primitiva. Estas ideas se reafirman también en el
contexto de su obra De la desigualdad personal en la sociedad civil donde sirven de
base para una nueva ética de la comunicación. Estudiaré el concepto de ‘el don de la
palabra’, que en este contexto es el instrumento único de la abstracción o
descomposición, capaz de partir el pensamiento en dos facultades o potencias
diferentes, ‘imaginación’ y ‘memoria’.

Breaking down complexity

The unbounded expressive capacity of human language cannot boil down to an infinite list of sentences stored in a finite brain. Our linguistic knowledge is rather grounded around a rule-based universal syntactic computation—called Merge—which takes categorized units in input (e.g. this and ship), and generates structures by binding words recursively into more complex hierarchies of any length (e.g. this ship; this ship sinks…). Here we present data from different fMRI datasets probing the cortical implementation of this fundamental process. We first pushed complexity down to a three-word level, to explore how Merge creates minimally hierarchical phrases and sentences. We then moved to the most fundamental two-word level, to directly assess the universal invariant nature of Merge, when no additive mechanisms are involved. Our most general finding is that Merge as the basic syntactic operation is primarily performed by confined area, namely BA 44 in the IFG. Activity reduces to its most ventral-anterior portion at the most fundamental level, following fine-grained sub-anatomical parcellation proposed for the region. The deep frontal operculum/anterior-dorsal insula (FOP/adINS), a phylogenetically older and less specialized region, rather appears to support word-accumulation processing in which the categorical information of the word is first accessed based on its lexical status, and then maintained on hold before further processing takes place. The present data confirm the general notion of BA 44 being activated as a function of complex structural hierarchy, but they go beyond this view by proposing that structural sensitivity in BA 44 is already appreciated at the lowest levels of complexity during which minimal phrase-structures are build up, and syntactic Merge is assessed. Further, they call for a redefinition of BA 44 from multimodal area to a macro-region with internal localizable functional profiles
How does perceptual experience make us knowledgeable? This book argues that the answer lies in the nature of perceptual experience: this experience involves conceptual capacities and is a relation between perceiver and world. The author develops her position via a critical examination of conceptualist and relationist theories of perception. A discussion of recent work in vision science rounds up this contribution to the philosophy of perception.

Lucans unter Nero entstandenes Epos über den römischen Bürgerkrieg zielt weniger auf eine historisch korrekte Darstellung ab als auf eine Deutung in weitaus größerem Maße. Dafür bricht der Autor mit üblichen Gattungskonventionen, obwohl er typische Elemente des Genres nutzt. Entscheidend für das Verständnis ist die Bildsprache mit ihren Gleichnissen, Kurzvergleichen, Metaphern und Exempla, die bisher zu wenig Beachtung fanden und im Anhang erstmals vollständig erfaßt sind. So gleicht etwa Crassus einem “Isthmus”, der Caesar und Pompeius trennt, der alternde Pompeius einer “stürzenden Eiche” oder Caesar durch sein schnelles entschiedenes Handeln einem “Blitz”. Solche Formen werden planvoll eingesetzt und verknüpft, um die zentrale Rolle der Akteure im Bürgerkrieg zu kommunizieren. Dabei kommt Caesar, Pompeius, Cato, den Soldaten, dem Volk und einigen Nebenfiguren mehr Bedeutung zu als in anderen Berichten und epischen Prätexten. Der Blick des Lesers soll weniger auf das Geschehen als auf das Verhalten der Menschen gelenkt werden, wozu einzelne Geschehensabläufe auffallend anders als in anderen Quellen gewichtet und gestaltet sind.
