Nero nuntiis magis et rumoribus quam armis depulsus. Der römische Geschichtsschreiber Tacitus konstatierte in den Historien, Kaiser Nero sei „mehr durch Botschaften und Gerüchte gestürzt worden als durch Waffengewalt“ (hist. 1,89,2). Laut der antiken Quellen redete die plebs urbana tatsächlich mit unbändigem Interesse über den princeps und diskutierte Gerüchte, die Neros Verfehlungen als Schutzherr Roms thematisierten oder ihn gar der Brandstiftung bezichtigten – das Bild des verrückten Kaisers, der Leier spielend seine Freude über das brennende Rom ausdrückt, dient weithin als anschauliches Beispiel eines Tyrannen.
Diese Arbeit überprüft die genannte taciteische These auf Schlüssigkeit. Dazu muss die komplexe Konstellation der Herrschaft Neros sowie seines Untergangs, in Hinblick auf die Wirkungsweise der Gerüchte, dargelegt und analysiert werden. Es werden anfangs elementare Fragen der geschichtswissenschaftlichen Forschung zu Nero und zum frühen Prinzipat behandelt: Über welches Ansehen und Handlungspotential verfügte die plebs urbana? Wodurch wurde die Herrschaft des Kaisers legitimiert und auf welche Gruppen zielte Neros Herrschaftspropaganda ab?
Im Anschluss erläutert und analysiert der Verfasser die Funktionen des Gerüchts als Mittel der politischen Meinungsbildung für die Aristokratie und die hauptstädtische plebs. Der Einfluss der üblen Nachrede auf die Herrschaft Neros wird durch die Schilderung dreier kennzeichnender Gerüchtekomplexe analysiert und führt schließlich zu der Frage, ob tatsächlich die fama zum Sturz des Kaisers führte oder vielmehr die vernachlässigte Heeresklientel an den Reichsgrenzen die entscheidenden Entwicklungen vorantrieb.
Abgeleitet von der Frage, seit wann sich die Menschheit auf dem Weg der Gleichstellung befindet, untersucht die Arbeit Handlungsspielräume von athenischen und spartanischen Frauen zur Zeit der klassischen Antike. Die Forschungslage vermittelt den Eindruck, dass sowohl athenische als auch spartanische Frauen in ihren Rechten stark eingeschränkt waren. Damit einher geht die Forschungsmeinung, spartanische Frauen seien rechtlich gesehen besser gestellt gewesen als ihre athenischen Zeitgenossinnen. Bezugnehmend auf wissenschaftliche Methoden und Erkenntnisse von Elke Hartmann, Christine Schnurr-Redford sowie Beate Wagner-Hasel untersucht die Bachelorarbeit die Frage, in welchem Umfang die Bürgerinnen Athens und Spartas am gesellschaftlichen, politischen und familialen Leben teilhaben konnten. Darüber hinaus wird nach der Bedeutung von Frauen, ihren Tätigkeiten und Beziehungen in den sozialen sowie politischen Lebensräumen gefragt. Hierzu werden die antiken Schriftquellen –durchweg von Männern verfasst – kritisch gelesen und miteinander verglichen.
Für jede der beiden Poleis Athen und Sparta liegen zwei Schwerpunkte der Analyse zugrunde. Exemplarisch werden die Denkmuster antiker Philosophen wie Aristoteles und Platon herausgearbeitet. Vor diesem ideologischen Hintergrund werden die weiblichen Lebenswelten athenischer sowie spartanischer Bürgerinnen diskutiert. Für Analyse und Vergleich richtungsweisend ist die im populären und wissenschaftlichen Diskurs verankerte vermeintlichen Bipolarität zwischen Athen und Sparta, die im Verlauf der Arbeit methodische hinterfragt und relativiert wird.
Allgemein gesagt, nahmen Frauen in der griechischen Poliswelt eine eher untergeordnete Rolle ein. Athen stellt sich bei der Betrachtung der Quellen antiker Autoren als besonders rückschrittlich und konservativ hinsichtlich der gesellschaftlichen sowie politischen Integration von Frauen dar. Die Schattenseiten der wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Macht Athens werden in den Schriften der männlichen Bildungselite bildhaft dargestellt. Mit der Geburt war die Zukunft der athenischen Bürgerinnen vorbestimmt. Ihnen blieb lediglich ein zurückgezogenes Leben unter der Vormundschaft eines Mannes ohne jegliche eigene politische Teilhabe. Die Abhängigkeit vom männlichen Geschlecht war dabei nicht nur gesellschaftlich, sondern auch rechtlich abgesichert.
Dennoch herrschte, entgegen der Schriften Aristoteles’ auch in Sparta keine „Weiberherrschaft“. Spartanischen Frauen hatten, ebensowenig wie ihre athenischen Zeitgenossinnen, ein Teilnahme- bzw. Rederecht in der Volksversammlung. Auch das spartanische Ideal war einem konservativen Frauenbild verpflichtet.
Spartanische Frauen waren sich unterordnende Ehefrauen, deren Anteil an der Erhaltung des familiären Oikos größer und selbständiger war, als derjenige ihre athenischen Geschlechtsgenossinnen. In ihrem spezifischen Lebensmodell ging damit einher die Sorge um Nachkommen für die Familie und den spartanischen Staat.
Unterschieden haben sich die beiden Poleis lediglich in ihrer Haltung zu den weiblichen Pflichten. Die Wertschätzung der Athenerinnen litt massiv unter der Annahme, die weibliche Physis sei zu schwach für Tätigkeiten außerhalb des Haushalts. Athen schränkte daher die weiblichen Handlungsspielräume erheblich ein, es blieben Hausarbeit und Kindererziehung. Sparta dagegen privilegierte die eigenen Bürgerinnen und verpflichtete sie als Gegenleistung dazu, die nächste Generation von Spartanern auf die Welt zu bringen. Der Erfahrung, dass das Gebären von Kindern für Mutter und Kind eine lebensgefährliche Situation war, trugen die Spartaner Rechnung, indem sie Frauen sportliche Betätigung zur physischen Stärkung verordneten. Hinsichtlich des Erziehungsmodells unterschieden sich Athen und Sparta. Während in Athen die Erziehung der Nachkommen eine Privatsache und bis ins Jugendalter Angelegenheit der Mütter war, wuchsen spartanische Jungen seit dem siebten Lebensjahr gemeinsam und außerhalb der Familie auf.
