Based on fossil organism remains including plant macrofossils, charcoal, pollen, and invertebrates preserved in syngenetic deposits of the Batagay permafrost sequence in the Siberian Yana Highlands, we reconstructed the environmental history during marine isotope stages (MIS) 6 to 2. Two fossil assemblages, exceptionally rich in plant remains, allowed for a detailed description of the palaeo-vegetation during two climate extremes of the Late Pleistocene, the onset of the last glacial maximum (LGM) and the last interglacial. In addition, altogether 41 assemblages were used to outline the vegetation history since the penultimate cold stage of MIS 6. Accordingly, meadow steppes analogue to modern communities of the phytosociological order Festucetalia lenensis formed the primary vegetation during the Saalian and Weichselian cold stages. Cold-resistant tundra-steppe communities (Carici rupestris-Kobresietea bellardii) as they occur above the treeline today were, in contrast to more northern locations, mostly lacking. During the last interglacial, open coniferous woodland similar to modern larch taiga was the primary vegetation at the site. Abundant charcoal indicates wildfire events during the last interglacial. Zoogenic disturbances of the local vegetation were indicated by the presence of ruderal plants, especially by abundant Urtica dioica, suggesting that the area was an interglacial refugium for large herbivores. Meadow steppes, which formed the primary vegetation during cold stages and provided potentially suitable pastures for herbivores, were a significant constituent of the plant cover in the Yana Highlands also under the full warm stage conditions of the last interglacial. Consequently, meadow steppes occurred in the Yana Highlands during the entire investigated timespan from MIS 6 to MIS 2 documenting a remarkable environmental stability. Thus, the proportion of meadow steppe vegetation merely shifted in response to the respectively prevailing climatic conditions. Their persistence indicates low precipitation and a relatively warm growing season throughout and beyond the late Pleistocene. The studied fossil record also proves that modern steppe occurrences in the Yana Highlands did not establish as late as in the Holocene but instead are relicts of a formerly continuous steppe belt extending from Central Siberia to Northeast Yakutia during the Pleistocene. The persistence of plants and invertebrates characteristic of meadow steppe vegetation in interior Yakutia throughout the late Quaternary indicates climatic continuity and documents the suitability of this region as a refugium also for other organisms of the Pleistocene mammoth steppe including the iconic large herbivores. Purpose: The concepts of creativity and intuition have been well studied in isolation, but less is known about their distinctive contributions to option generation in decision making. Method: We examined the relation between creative and intuitive decision making in two studies-one involving coaches and one involving soccer players-using video footage of real soccer matches. Additionally, we analyzed whether this relation is culture generic or culture specific by conducting matched cross-cultural studies in a European and a South American country. Results: In Study 1, results indicate a conceptual overlap of creativity and intuition for Brazilian and German soccer coaches. Furthermore, coaches did not differ in their evaluation of creative and intuitive actions of players of both cultures. In Study 2, we found that for both subsamples the total number of generated options was positively correlated with the quality of the first and the final option and that the quality of players' first (intuitive) option was higher than that of options generated later. Moreover, results indicate a positive correlation between a player's creativity score and the quality of the first generated option for the whole sample. Conclusion: Overall, our findings provide meaningful information regarding athletes' and coaches' option-generation processes in decision making in complex team sports.

Embodied cognition postulates a bi-directional link between the human body and its cognitive functions. Whether this holds for higher cognitive functions such as problem solving is unknown. We predicted that arm movement manipulations performed by the participants could affect the problem-solving solutions. We tested this prediction in quantitative reasoning tasks that allowed two solutions to each problem (addition or subtraction). In two studies with healthy adults (N=53 and N=50), we found an effect of problem-congruent movements on problem solutions. Consistent with embodied cognition, sensorimotor information gained via right or left arm movements affects the solution in different types of problem-solving tasks.

There is evidence both for mental number representations along a horizontal mental number line with larger numbers to the right of smaller numbers (for Western cultures) and a physically grounded, vertical representation where “more is up.” Few studies have compared effects in the horizontal and vertical dimension and none so far have combined both dimensions within a single paradigm where numerical magnitude was task-irrelevant and none of the dimensions was primed by a response dimension. We now investigated number representations over both dimensions, building on findings that mental representations of numbers and space co-activate each other. In a Go/No-go experiment, participants were auditorily primed with a relatively small or large number and then visually presented with quasi-randomly distributed distractor symbols and one Arabic target number (in Go trials only). Participants pressed a central button whenever they detected the target number and elsewise refrained from responding. Responses were not more efficient when small numbers were presented to the left and large numbers to the right. However, results indicated that large numbers were associated with upper space more strongly than small numbers. This suggests that in two-dimensional space when no response dimension is given, numbers are conceptually associated with vertical, but not horizontal space.

Schulpraktika bilden die zentrale Grundlage der Lehrerbildung in Potsdam. Bereits im Potsdamer Modell der Lehrerbildung (1993) sind sie festgehalten, seit der Integration des Schulpraktikums (Praxissemesters) 2008 absolvieren alle Potsdamer Lehramtsstudierenden fünf Pflichtpraktika. Während die Ziele der Praktika klar beschrieben sind, sind die tatsächlichen Lernerfolge nicht immer klar – ebenso wenig, wie die Begleitung der Praktika aussehen muss, um die Studierenden bestmöglich zu unterstützen. Auch die Integration in weitere Lehrveranstaltungen des Studiums ist ein noch offenes Feld, das weiterer Betrachtung verdient. Die unterschiedliche Ausrichtung der Potsdamer Praktika, Perspektivwechsel im Orientierungs-/Integriertem Eingangspraktikum, Selbstreflektion im Praktikum in pädagogisch-psychologischen Handlungsfeldern, Unterricht als Profession in den Fachdidaktischen Tagespraktika, Anwendung von Diagnostik im psychodiagnostischen Praktikum und die Synthese all dessen im Schulpraktikum, bieten dafür zahlreiche Ansatzpunkte.
Schulpraktika sind nicht nur ein zentraler und von Studierenden hoch geschätzter Bestandteil des Studiums, sondern werden auch zunehmend für die Bildungsforschung interessant. Fragen nach der Kompetenzentwicklung, Selbsteinschätzungen und der Entwicklung der Reflexionsfähigkeit von Studierenden stehen dabei ebenso im Fokus wie die Einschätzung der universitären Begleitung und der Einbindung ins weitere Studium.
Der vorliegende Band versammelt Studien von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler der Universität Potsdam, die die fünf Pflichtpraktika im Lehramtsstudium unter unterschiedlichen Blickwinkel beforschen. Besonders hervorzuheben ist, dass die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen stammen und somit die Praktika mit verschiedenen Instrumenten und aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln betrachten. Die präsentierten Ergebnisse bilden eine gute Grundlage, um die Praktika in Potsdam und an anderen Standorten weiterzuentwickeln.
