Management intensity modifies soil properties, e.g., organic carbon (C-org) concentrations and soil pH with potential feedbacks on plant diversity. These changes might influence microbial P concentrations (P-mic) in soil representing an important component of the Pcycle. Our objectives were to elucidate whether abiotic and biotic variables controlling P-mic concentrations in soil are the same for forests and grasslands, and to assess the effect of region and management on P-mic concentrations in forest and grassland soils as mediated by the controlling variables. In three regions of Germany, Schwabische Alb, Hanich-Dun, and Schorfheide-Chorin, we studied forest and grassland plots (each n=150) differing in plant diversity and land-use intensity. In contrast to controls of microbial biomass carbon (C-mic), P-mic was strongly influenced by soil pH, which in turn affected phosphorus (P) availability and thus microbial Puptake in forest and grassland soils. Furthermore, P-mic concentrations in forest and grassland soils increased with increasing plant diversity. Using structural equation models, we could show that soil C-org is the profound driver of plant diversity effects on P-mic in grasslands. For both forest and grassland, we found regional differences in P-mic attributable to differing environmental conditions (pH, soil moisture). Forest management and tree species showed no effect on P-mic due to a lack of effects on controlling variables (e.g., C-org). We also did not find management effects in grassland soils which might be caused by either compensation of differently directed effects across sites or by legacy effects of former fertilization constraining the relevance of actual practices. We conclude that variables controlling P-mic or C-mic in soil differ in part and that regional differences in controlling variables are more important for P-mic in soil than those induced by management.

Begonnen hat es um 1900 mit Qualitätskontrolle, später folgte Qualitätsprüfung und seit Mitte der 90er Jahre hat das Thema Qualitätsmanagement Einzug gehalten in alle Bereiche von Politik und Gesellschaft. Im Gesundheitswesen, der Justiz und auch an vielen Hochschulen wurden spezielle Stellen eingerichtet, die sich gezielt mit der Umsetzung von Qualitätsentwicklung oder Qualitätsmanagement befassen. Das übergeordnete Ziel bei Einführung eines Qualitätsmanagements ist es, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Organisation sowie auch die Zufriedenheit der Mitglieder der Institutionen und weiterer Stakeholder zu steigern, indem die Qualität der Tätigkeiten und der jeweiligen Rahmenbedingungen erhalten und optimiert wird. Mit der bewussten Entscheidung zur Qualitätssicherung und -entwicklung beginnt ein fortlaufender Prozess, der stetig intensiv begleitet werden muss. Qualitätsmanagement wirkt nachhaltig, in dem durch die Schaffung regelmäßiger und systematischer Strukturen und Prozesse auch zukünftig den beteiligten Personen ein optimales Handeln entsprechend der dann geltenden Bedingungen ermöglicht wird. Portal alumni widmet sich in seinem zehnten Heft diesem Thema und hat Absolventen der Universität Potsdam nach ihrem Tätigkeitsfeld im Qualitätsmanagement und den entsprechenden Erfolgen befragt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Ehemalige Einsatzbereiche in Wirtschaft und Unternehmen aber auch in Sport, Bildung oder Hochschulen gefunden haben. Daneben berichten wir in diesem Heft von einem Projekt des Career Service, dem Schnupperjobben, und auch die Berichte über die Geschehnisse an Ihrer Alma mater kommen nicht zu kurz.
Vorliegender Leitfaden ist eines der Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojekts „Open Innovation in Life Sciences“ (OIL), das von Mai 2008 bis April 2011 an der Universität Potsdam durchgeführt wurde. Er nimmt für sich in Anspruch, gerade Innovationsmanager in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) der Pharmaindustrie bei der Einführung des Open Innovation Managements zu unterstützen. Zielsetzung des Forschungsprojekts war es, (1) die Chancen und Risiken von Open Innovation unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Anforderungen von Pharma-KMU zu analysieren und (2) daraus abgeleitet ein Konzept zur Implementierung von Open Innovation bei Pharma-KMU zu entwickeln. Der Ausgangspunkt des Projektes war die Erkenntnis, dass die Life Sciences-Branche im Allgemeinen und die Pharmaindustrie im Besonderen durch eine steigende Komplexität der Innovationsprozesse und eine zunehmende Tendenz zu Kooperationen gekennzeichnet ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund eröffnet gerade der Open Innovation-Ansatz für die Pharmabranche neue Gestaltungs- und damit Wachstumsmöglichkeiten. Open Innovation – definiert als die planvolle Öffnung der Innovationsprozesse und die strategische Einbindung des Unternehmensumfelds – wird dabei als zentraler Erfolgsfaktor für die Innovationsfähigkeit beschrieben.
Birth weight variation is influenced by fetal and maternal genetic and non-genetic factors, and has been reproducibly associated with future cardio-metabolic health outcomes. In expanded genome-wide association analyses of own birth weight (n = 321,223) and offspring birth weight (n = 230,069 mothers), we identified 190 independent association signals (129 of which are novel). We used structural equation modeling to decompose the contributions of direct fetal and indirect maternal genetic effects, then applied Mendelian randomization to illuminate causal pathways. For example, both indirect maternal and direct fetal genetic effects drive the observational relationship between lower birth weight and higher later blood pressure: maternal blood pressure-raising alleles reduce offspring birth weight, but only direct fetal effects of these alleles, once inherited, increase later offspring blood pressure. Using maternal birth weight-lowering genotypes to proxy for an adverse intrauterine environment provided no evidence that it causally raises offspring blood pressure, indicating that the inverse birth weight-blood pressure association is attributable to genetic effects, and not to intrauterine programming.
The relationship of different types of grassland use with plant species richness and composition ( functional groups of herbs, legumes, and grasses) has so far been studied at small regional scales or comprising only few components of land use. We comprehensively studied the relationship between abandonment, fertilization, mowing intensity, and grazing by different livestock types on plant diversity and composition of 1514 grassland sites in three regions in North-East, Central and South-West Germany. We further considered environmental site conditions including soil type and topographical situation. Fertilized grasslands showed clearly reduced plant species diversity (-15% plant species richness, -0.1 Shannon diversity on fertilized grasslands plots of 16m(2)) and changed composition (-3% proportion of herb species), grazing had the second largest effects and mowing the smallest ones. Among the grazed sites, the ones grazed by sheep had higher than average species richness (+27%), and the cattle grazed ones lower (-42%). Further, these general results were strongly modulated by interactions between the different components of land use and by regional context: land-use effects differed largely in size and sometimes even in direction between regions. This highlights the importance of comparing different regions and to involve a large number of plots
There is a wealth of smaller-scale studies on the effects of forest management on plant diversity. However, studies comparing plant species diversity in forests with different management types and intensity, extending over different regions and forest stages, and including detailed information on site conditions are missing. We studied vascular plants on 1500 20 m x 20 m forest plots in three regions of Germany (Schwabische Alb, Hainich-Dun, Schorfheide-Chorin). In all regions, our study plots comprised different management types (unmanaged, selection cutting, deciduous and coniferous age-class forests, which resulted from clear cutting or shelterwood logging), various stand ages, site conditions, and levels of management-related disturbances. We analyzed how overall richness and richness of different plant functional groups (trees, shrubs, herbs, herbaceous species typically growing in forests and herbaceous light-demanding species) responded to the different management types. On average, plant species richness was 13% higher in age-class than in unmanaged forests, and did not differ between deciduous age-class and selection forests. In age-class forests of the Schwabische Alb and Hainich-Dun, coniferous stands had higher species richness than deciduous stands. Among age-class forests, older stands with large quantities of standing biomass were slightly poorer in shrub and light-demanding herb species than younger stands. Among deciduous forests, the richness of herbaceous forest species was generally lower in unmanaged than in managed forests, and it was even 20% lower in unmanaged than in selection forests in Hainich-Dun. Overall, these findings show that disturbances by management generally increase plant species richness. This suggests that total plant species richness is not suited as an indicator for the conservation status of forests, but rather indicates disturbances.
Land-use intensification is a key driver of biodiversity change. However, little is known about how it alters relationships between the diversities of different taxonomic groups, which are often correlated due to shared environmental drivers and trophic interactions. Using data from 150 grassland sites, we examined how land-use intensification (increased fertilization, higher livestock densities, and increased mowing frequency) altered correlations between the species richness of 15 plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate taxa. We found that 54% of pairwise correlations between taxonomic groups were significant and positive among all grasslands, while only one was negative. Higher land-use intensity substantially weakened these correlations(35% decrease in rand 43% fewer significant pairwise correlations at high intensity), a pattern which may emerge as a result of biodiversity declines and the breakdown of specialized relationships in these conditions. Nevertheless, some groups (Coleoptera, Heteroptera, Hymenoptera and Orthoptera) were consistently correlated with multidiversity, an aggregate measure of total biodiversity comprised of the standardized diversities of multiple taxa, at both high and lowland-use intensity. The form of intensification was also important; increased fertilization and mowing frequency typically weakened plant-plant and plant-primary consumer correlations, whereas grazing intensification did not. This may reflect decreased habitat heterogeneity under mowing and fertilization and increased habitat heterogeneity under grazing. While these results urge caution in using certain taxonomic groups to monitor impacts of agricultural management on biodiversity, they also suggest that the diversities of some groups are reasonably robust indicators of total biodiversity across a range of conditions.
Genisa-Blätter III

Ursprünglich sollten die „Genisa-Blätter III“ ein europäisches Projekt werden. Veröffentlicht werden sollten Quellen aus Genisot, die im vormals deutschsprachigen Raum gehoben wurden. Das Vorhaben scheiterte. Nunmehr sind im Band sieben Beiträge versammelt, in denen kenntnisreich Funde aus den Ablagen in Alsenz, Altenschönbach, Memmelsdorf, Reckendorf und Veitshöchheim besprochen werden. Der achte Aufsatz knüpft am internationalen Vorhaben an: Im Mittelpunkt des Artikels stehen drei Genisafunde aus Tschechien, genauer gesagt aus den beiden ostböhmischen Ortschaften Luže und Rychnov nad Kněžnou. Alle acht Beiträge gemeinsam verdeutlichen die inhaltliche Spannbreite von Genisot, die sich die Forschung zunutze machen kann: Sie reicht von Aspekten der Wirtschaft und des Rechts, über die Religion bis hin zum alltäglichen Leben und bietet jeweils eigene Geschichten im Spannungsfeld des möglichen Scheiterns.
Genisa-Blätter II

In den acht Beiträgen der „Genisa-Blätter II“ werden Funde aus verschiedenen fränkischen Genisot vorgestellt. Sie wurden im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Workshops im Genisaprojekt Veitshöchheim von Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftlern aus ganz Deutschland bearbeitet. Die edierten Quellen sowie deren Einordnung durch die Autorinnen und Autoren geben vielfältige Einblicke in die Komplexität des historischen Judentums in Franken. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Ausgabe liegt auf Text- und Textilfunden aus dem Bereich der Religion.
