A close comparison of the use of language, style and method of composition of the sizable corpus of Old English and Old Irish vernacular sermons (10c and 11c) show that both cultures make use of a preaching rhetoric which is deeply indebted to oral styles of preaching and geared towards the aural reception of the spoken word. Both tend to resort to a flamboyant pastoralism and excel in elaborate verbal artistry. While received scholarship claims that the English were subject to Irish influence in this respect because of the existence Hiberno-Latin analogues, this short monograph argues that this is very unlikely. Rather both traditions are independently indebted to 7c to 9c Continental preaching styles, the evidence of which shows that there was both a plain preaching mode (the "fisherman's" mode) and an elaborate (or "Asian") one. The use of both was advocated, depending on the occasion, by St. Augustin's "De doctrina christiana." In the Insular context of vernacular preaching, the latter seems to have been functioned as a favoured art form.

In this paper we apply symbolic transformations as a visualisation technique for analysing rhythm production. It is shown that qualitative information can be extracted from the experimental data. This approach may provide new insights into the organisation of temporal order by the brain on different levels of description. A simple phenomenological model for the explanation of the observed phenomena is proposed.
Amphiphilic discotic pentakis (arylethynyl) benzene compounds 1 and 2 containing an enlarged aromatic core functioning as a chromophoric p-electron system were studied with regard to their photophysical properties within Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The results obtained from steady-state absorption as well as fluorescence excitation and emission measurements will be discussed with regard to interchromophoric interactions in the LB films. Time-resolved fluorescence inves6igations revealed the formation of a ground-state complex as well as excimer formation. Thermal treatment causes irreversible destruction of the LB film structure of the discotic amphiphiles. Within droplets the reorganization of the original nematic-discotic (ND) mesophase of the bulk materials was found for the alcohol 2 as indicated by a Maltese Cross texture, whereas the acid 1 remained isotopic.
