In Anknüpfung an die Gründungsfeier des „Naturwissenschaftlichen Vereins“ zu Magdeburg im Jahre 1869, in der auch der 100. Geburtstag Alexander von Humboldts gefeiert wurde, werden die Ehrungen dreier bedeutender Naturforscher des 19. Jahrhunderts für ihren Förderer Alexander von Humboldt behandelt: Matthias Jacob Schleiden, der 1842 Humboldt sein Lehrbuch „Grundzüge der wissenschaftlichen Botanik“ gewidmet hatte und dafür von ihm einen langen Dankesbrief bekam, hielt 1869 in Dresden eine Gedenkrede. Emil du Bois-Reymond, dessen elektrobiologische Forschungen durch A. v. Humboldt maßgeblich gefördert worden waren, ehrte 1883 die Brüder Humboldt anläßlich der Enthüllung ihrer Denkmäler vor der Berliner Universität mit einer Rede. Charles Darwin, der durch Humboldts Reisebeschreibung zu seiner Weltreise inspiriert worden war, sandte ihm 1839 seinen eigenen Reisebericht und erhielt einen bemerkenswerten Dankesbrief. Anhand von Originalbriefen wird die Bedeutung der drei Naturforscher für den Beginn der neuen naturwissenschaftlichen Epoche im 19. Jahrhundert illustriert, für die die Gründung des „Naturwissenschaftlichen Vereins“ charakteristisch war.

Since 1793, Alexander von Humboldt had been dreaming of realizing a travel to Russia, leading him right into Central Asia. In 1829, he finally was able to see his dream fulfilled, although the contexts and conditions of his travel to Russia were totally different from those of his voyage to the Americas, realized some thirty years earlier. Severely controlled by the Russian monarchy, the travellers made it up to the Chinese border, rapidly crossing, within very few months and with the help of more than 12000 horses, more than 18000 kilometers. This article analizes the outstanding importance of Humboldt's Asian project in the context of Humboldtian Science, specially focussing the relevance of TransArea studies within its omnipresent AsiAmerican dimensions. Therefore, Asie centrale occupies a highly specific place within the complex cosmos of Humboldt's writings, highlighting a fascinating transdisciplinary and geoecological approach still of great importance today.
In dem vorliegenden Artikel wird Alexander von Humboldts Beschäftigung mit der geschichtlichen Dimension der Natur analysiert. Es soll gleichzeitig untersucht werden, inwiefern der von Darwin sehr verehrte Humboldt ein „Vorläufer“ des englischen Wissenschaftlers genannt werden kann. Während Humboldt in seiner Jugendzeit auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte der Natur durchaus interessante Forschungsansätze verfolgt, scheint er in der Zeit ab 1800 aus methodischen Gründen Forschungen abzulehnen, die sich mit (unsicheren) Hypothesen über den einstigen Zustand der Erde beschäftigen. Die Wissenschaft, so Humboldt, braucht empirisch fundierte Belege. Untersucht wird auch, inwiefern sich seine Position mit der Zeit verändert, insbesondere angesichts der ab 1810/1820 florierenden Paläontologie. Spannend wird es dann im späten Kosmos, in dem Humboldt zwei eigentlich widersprüchliche Positionen einnimmt: in seinen programmatischen Abschnitten hebt er hervor, daß sich seine Art der Naturbeschreibung ganz strikt auf das Seiende beschränken müsse, anderswo im gleichen Werk subvertiert er diese Aussage allerdings und bietet dem Leser breitangelegte Einblicke in die Geschichte der Natur.
Dass Darwin und Humboldt einander kannten und schätzten, ist allgemein bekannt. Im folgenden Text wird darüber hinaus genauer untersucht, inwieweit Darwin in seinem Werk Origin of Species durch Humboldts Arbeiten angeregt wurde. Darwins datierte Randbemerkungen zu Humboldts Büchern – die sich noch heute in Darwins Library in Cambridge befinden - belegen, dass Darwin noch wenige Wochen vor seinem Tode Humboldts Personal Narratives studierte. Alexander von Humboldts Arbeiten, vor allem sein Reisewerk mit seinen detailreichen Beobachtungen, war für Charles Darwin ein Leben lang eine wichtige empirische Quelle, regten ihn aber auch zum Widerspruch an. Das wird anhand des Themas „Migration“ erläutert. Dennoch waren Darwins und Humboldts Wahrnehmung und Bewertung von Literatur unterschiedlich und offenbaren kontroverse Ansichten von Entwicklung, wie sich u. a. in der Bewertung der Arbeiten Heinrich Bronns zeigt. Von Humboldts Alterswerk Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung, zeigte sich Darwin enttäuscht, weil er bestimmte Erwartungen hatte, die sich nicht erfüllten. Auch von Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, einem Vertrauten Humboldts, erhoffte Darwin wichtige Erkenntnisse – er schickte an ihn 183 Proben zur Untersuchung. Leider erfüllte sich Darwins Hoffnung nicht.

Die Reisetagebücher der Amerika-Reise (1799-1804) stellen ein Kompendium an schriftlichen Einträgen, Tabellen, Diagrammen und Zeichnungen dar, das in der Tradition römischer Papiermuseen des 17. Jhs. steht. Sie können als Mikrokosmen kleiner Kunstkammern aufgefasst werden, in denen Naturobjekte, Kunstwerke und Arbeitsmittel einen gemeinsamen Reflexionsraum bilden. Im Zentrum des vorliegenden Beitrags steht Humboldts Auffassung einer gestalteten Bestimmung von Landschaft vermittels besonders einprägsamer Bildformen. Auf erstaunliche Weise nähert sich Humboldts Ästhetik der Gesamtsicht von Natur Charles Darwins Begriff der natürlichen Schönheit an. In den Reisetagebüchern zeigt sich ein heterogener, von Lebendigkeit zeugender Charakter, der sowohl durch das unterschiedliche Format der einzelnen Hefte, als auch durch die inkonsistente Behandlung des Papiers erreicht wird. Dieser bewegliche Zug setzt sich in zahlreichen Zetteln, Briefen und weiteren Texten fort als ein eigenes Prinzip von Evolution.
