This article focuses on university students' foreign language competence as an essential requirement for the successful completion of courses of study abroad. The first part gives a brief overview of publications on intercultural and study skills. Most of those articles, however, do not deal with any specific subject or a particular foreign language. Therefore, the main part of this article provides a detailed description of subject-oriented language courses for German students who are being prepared for their studies in French Law at the University of Paris X - Nanterre. On the basis of his experience in the areas of curriculum and course design as well as teachng, the author proposes ways and means of providing students with the skills needed to participate in different types of university courses and exminations at a French university.
