The self-employed faced strong income losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many governments introduced programs to financially support the self-employed during the pandemic, including Germany. The German Ministry for Economic Affairs announced a €50bn emergency-aid program in March 2020, offering one-off lump-sum payments of up to €15,000 to those facing substantial revenue declines. By reassuring the self- employed that the government ‘would not let them down’ during the crisis, the program had also the important aim of motivating the self-employed to get through the crisis. We investigate whether the program affected the confidence of the self-employed to survive the crisis using real-time online-survey data comprising more than 20,000 observations. We employ propensity score matching, making use of a rich set of variables that influence the subjective survival probability as main outcome measure. We observe that this program had significant effects, with the subjective survival probability of the self- employed being moderately increased. We reveal important effect heterogeneities with respect to education, industries, and speed of payment. Notably, positive effects only occur among those self-employed whose application was processed quickly. This suggests stress-induced waiting costs due to the uncertainty associated with the administrative processing and the overall pandemic situation. Our findings have policy implications for the design of support programs, while also contributing to the literature on the instruments and effects of entrepreneurship policy interventions in crisis situations.
Carbon Adsorbents from Spent Coffee for Removal of
Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange from Water

Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from dried spent coffee (SCD), a biological waste product, to produce adsorbents for methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solution. Pre-pyrolysis activation of SCD was achieved via treatment of the SCD with aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions at 90 °C. Pyrolysis of the pretreated SCD at 500 °C for 1 h produced powders with typical characteristics of AC suitable and effective for dye adsorption. As an alternative to the rather harsh base treatment, calcium carbonate powder, a very common and abundant resource, was also studied as an activator. Mixtures of SCD and CaCO3 (1:1 w/w) yielded effective ACs for MO and MB removal upon pyrolysis needing only small amounts of AC to clear the solutions. A selectivity of the adsorption process toward anionic (MO) or cationic (MB) dyes was not observed.

Winter is an important season for many limnological processes, which can range from biogeochemical transformations to ecological interactions. Interest in the structure and function of lake ecosystems under ice is on the rise. Although limnologists working at polar latitudes have a long history of winter work, the required knowledge to successfully sample under winter conditions is not widely available and relatively few limnologists receive formal training. In particular, the deployment and operation of equipment in below 0 degrees C temperatures pose considerable logistical and methodological challenges, as do the safety risks of sampling during the ice-covered period. Here, we consolidate information on winter lake sampling and describe effective methods to measure physical, chemical, and biological variables in and under ice. We describe variation in snow and ice conditions and discuss implications for sampling logistics and safety. We outline commonly encountered methodological challenges and make recommendations for best practices to maximize safety and efficiency when sampling through ice or deploying instruments in ice-covered lakes. Application of such practices over a broad range of ice-covered lakes will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that regulate lakes during winter and how winter conditions affect the subsequent ice-free period.
Background
Recent research emphasized the role of inflammatory processes in the pathophysiology of depression. Theories hypothesizes that life events (LE) can affect the immune system and trigger depressive symptoms. LE are also considered as one of the best predictors for the onset and course of depressive disorders.
Methods
Observational study across three treatment settings: n=208 depressive patients (75.5%f, M 46.6 y) were examined on depression (BDI-II), life events (ILE) and inflammatory markers (IL-6, CRP, fibrinogen, ICAM-1, TNF-alpha, E-selectin) at baseline (t0), 5-week(t1) and 5-month(t2) follow-up. Effects and interactions were analyzed with regression models.
Results
LE were associated with depressive symptoms at t0 (beta=.209; p=.002) and both follow-ups. Except for CRP, which was linked to depression symptoms at t2 (betai=-.190; p=.032), there were no effects of inflammatory markers on depressive symptoms. At t1, an interaction between CRP and LE in total (beta=-.249; p=.041) was found as well as for LE in the past five years (beta=-.122; p=.027). Similar interactions were found between cumulative LE and ICAM-1 (beta=-.197; p=.003) and IL-6 (beta=-.425; p=.001).
Conclusion
The cumulative burden of LE effects symptoms and treatment outcome in depressive patients. There is some evidence that inflammatory marker may have long-term effects on treatment outcome as they seem to weaken the determining relation between LE and depression.
Background: As the number of cardiac diseases continuously increases within the last years in modern society, so does cardiac treatment, especially cardiac catheterization. The procedure of a cardiac catheterization is challenging for both patients and practitioners. Several potential stressors of psychological or physical nature can occur during the procedure. The objective of the study is to develop and implement a stress management intervention for both practitioners and patients that aims to reduce the psychological and physical strain of a cardiac catheterization.
Methods: The clinical study (DRKS00026624) includes two randomized controlled intervention trials with parallel groups, for patients with elective cardiac catheterization and practitioners at the catheterization lab, in two clinic sites of the Ernst-von-Bergmann clinic network in Brandenburg, Germany. Both groups received different interventions for stress management. The intervention for patients comprises a psychoeducational video with different stress management technics and additional a standardized medical information about the cardiac catheterization examination. The control condition includes the in hospitals practiced medical patient education before the examination (usual care). Primary and secondary outcomes are measured by physiological parameters and validated questionnaires, the day before (M1) and after (M2) the cardiac catheterization and at a postal follow-up 6 months later (M3). It is expected that people with standardized information and psychoeducation show reduced complications during cardiac catheterization procedures, better pre- and post-operative wellbeing, regeneration, mood and lower stress levels over time. The intervention for practitioners includes a Mindfulness-based stress reduction program (MBSR) over 8 weeks supervised by an experienced MBSR practitioner directly at the clinic site and an operative guideline. It is expected that practitioners with intervention show improved perceived and chronic stress, occupational health, physical and mental function, higher effort-reward balance, regeneration and quality of life. Primary and secondary outcomes are measured by physiological parameters (heart rate variability, saliva cortisol) and validated questionnaires and will be assessed before (M1) and after (M2) the MBSR intervention and at a postal follow-up 6 months later (M3). Physiological biomarkers in practitioners will be assessed before (M1) and after intervention (M2) on two work days and a two days off. Intervention effects in both groups (practitioners and patients) will be evaluated separately using multivariate variance analysis.
Discussion: This study evaluates the effectiveness of two stress management intervention programs for patients and practitioners within cardiac catheter laboratory. Study will disclose strains during a cardiac catheterization affecting both patients and practitioners. For practitioners it may contribute to improved working conditions and occupational safety, preservation of earning capacity, avoidance of participation restrictions and loss of performance. Vorwort des Autors: Die vorliegende Studie erging aus einer empirischen Untersuchung, die im Rahmen einer Dissertation zum Thema „Wettbewerb in kommunalen Inhousebetrieben“ bei Herrn Prof. Dr. Reichard am Lehrstuhl Public Management an der Universität Potsdam durchgeführt worden ist. Die gesonderte Veröffentlichung dieser empirischen Studie durch das Kommunalwissenschaftliche Institut verfolgt das Ziel, die äußerst interessanten Ergebnisse dieser empirischen Untersuchung einer breiten kommunalen Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Hierbei bot sich die Chance, den Ergebnissen und Schlussfolgerungen einen weit größeren Raum zu gewähren als es im Rahmen der Dissertation möglich gewesen ist. Insofern handelt es sich hier nicht um einen Auszug der Dissertation, sondern um eine ausführlichere und teilweise auch weiterführende Betrachtung empirischer Befunde zur Frage, ob die Voraussetzungen für Marktwettbewerb zwischen internen Dienstleistungsbetrieben der Kommunen und externen Anbietern bereits gegeben sind. Da für Marktwettbewerb zahlreiche Reformaspekte des Neuen Steuerungsmodells gegeben sein müssen, bedeutete dies gleichsam die Frage nach dem Stand der kommunalen Verwaltungsreform, die im Zuge der empirischen Untersuchung den 87 Großen Kreisstädten in Baden-Württemberg gestellt worden ist. Um diese empirische Fragestellung verstehen zu können, behandelt diese Studie vorab die Frage, weshalb und in welchem Rahmen Marktwettbewerb für kommunale Inhousebetriebe sinnvoll sein kann und welche Unterschiede zu bisher angewandten Wettbewerbsformen bestehen.

UN Women – eine erfolgreiche Reform innerhalb der Vereinten Nationen für das Anliegen Geschlechtergleichberechtigung oder eine weitere verpasste Chance? Eine erste Bilanz nach 7 Jahren zeigt, wo erste Erfolge zu verzeichnen sind und welche Hürden vielleicht unüberwindbar zum Scheitern der neuen Institution für Frauen- und Gleichstellungsfragen beitragen werden.
Um zu begreifen, welche Neuerungen durch die Gründung von UN Women in das System der Vereinten Nationen eingeführt wurden, hilft dabei ein Blick zurück in die institutionelle und politische Geschichte der Vereinten Nationen, um die Entwicklung von Frauenrechten seit Gründung der UN zu beleuchten. Ferner wird der Status-quo des Völkerrechts im Hinblick auf die Rechte und den Schutz von Frauen ausführlich auf existierende Schwächen bzw. Lücken hin analysiert. Schlussendlich gibt die Verfasserin eine konkrete Bewertung bezüglich der institutionellen, politischen und rechtlichen Fortschritte und bestehenden Mängel sowie eigene Handlungsempfehlungen ab.

The up to similar to4 km high southern Patagonian Andes form a pronounced topographic barrier to atmospheric circulation in the southern hemisphere westerlies, and cause one of the most drastic orographic rain shadows on earth. Geologic data imply that this climatic pattern has been established or significantly enhanced during Miocene surface uplift of this Andean segment. We report evidence for important climatic and ecologic changes in the eastern foreland of the Patagonian Andes that appear to be the result of this uplift. To provide constraints on Miocene plant ecosystems and precipitation in the eastern (leeward) foreland of the Patagonian Andes, we determined carbon and oxygen isotope values of pedogenic carbonate nodules from a similar to500 m thick section of the continental Santa Cruz Formation. The age of these deposits was constrained by Ar/Ar dating of intercalated tuffs, which range from similar to22 to 14 Ma. At similar to16.5 Ma, the delta(13)C values increase by similar to3parts per thousand, the delta(18)O values decrease by >2parts per thousand, and the scatter in the oxygen isotope data increases significantly. We interpret these changes as the consequence of >1 km surface uplift in this Andean segment (from the delta(18)O values), and increased aridity to its east (from the delta(13)C values and the increased scatter in the delta(18)O values). Sediments overlying the Santa Cruz Formation are very limited in extent and volume, and dominated by coarse conglomerates related to Pleistocene and older glaciations. It thus seems that, by similar to14 Ma, deposition in the eastern foreland of the Southern Patagonian Andes had essentially ceased as the result of rain shadow formation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Stable isotope paleoaltimetry makes use of systematic trends in the distribution and isotopic composition of modern precipitation with climate and topography, and of the potential to estimate the isotopic composition of paleoprecipitation from authigenic (in-situ formed) minerals. To illustrate the usefulness as well as potential limitations of this method, we review (1) processes controlling the isotopic composition of modem precipitation, (2) stable isotope data from modern precipitation across regions of high topography, and (3) stable isotope data from authigenic minerals that have been used to infer paleotopography. From this we conclude that stable isotope studies of authigenic minerals can permit useful inferences on paleotopography, with uncertainties that critically depend on a detailed understanding of local- to global-scale paleoclimate during the time interval of interest
