Advancing digitalization is changing society and has far-reaching effects on people and companies. Fundamental to these changes are the new technological possibilities for processing data on an ever-increasing scale and for various purposes. The availability of large and high-quality data sets, especially those based on personal data, is crucial. They are used either to improve the productivity, quality, and individuality of products and services or to develop new types of services. Today, user behavior is tracked more actively and comprehensively than ever despite increasing legal requirements for protecting personal data worldwide. That increasingly raises ethical, moral, and social questions, which have moved to the forefront of the political debate, not least due to popular cases of data misuse. Given this discourse and the legal requirements, today's data management must fulfill three conditions: Legality or legal conformity of use and ethical legitimacy. Thirdly, the use of data should add value from a business perspective. Within the framework of these conditions, this cumulative dissertation pursues four research objectives with a focus on gaining a better understanding of
(1) the challenges of implementing privacy laws,
(2) the factors that influence customers' willingness to share personal data,
(3) the role of data protection for digital entrepreneurship, and
(4) the interdisciplinary scientific significance, its development, and its interrelationships.
Digitalisation in industry – also called “Industry 4.0” – is seen by numerous actors as an opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of the industrial sector. The scientific assessments of the effects of digitalisation in industry on environmental sustainability, however, are ambivalent. This cumulative dissertation uses three empirical studies to examine the expected and observed effects of digitalisation in industry on environmental sustainability. The aim of this dissertation is to identify opportunities and risks of digitalisation at different system levels and to derive options for action in politics and industry for a more sustainable design of digitalisation in industry. I use an interdisciplinary, socio-technical approach and look at selected countries of the Global South (Study 1) and the example of China (all studies). In the first study (section 2, joint work with Marcel Matthess), I use qualitative content analysis to examine digital and industrial policies from seven different countries in Africa and Asia for expectations regarding the impact of digitalisation on sustainability and compare these with the potentials of digitalisation for sustainability in the respective country contexts. The analysis reveals that the documents express a wide range of vague expectations that relate more to positive indirect impacts of information and communication technology (ICT) use, such as improved energy efficiency and resource management, and less to negative direct impacts of ICT, such as electricity consumption through ICT. In the second study (section 3, joint work with Marcel Matthess, Grischa Beier and Bing Xue), I conduct and analyse interviews with 18 industry representatives of the electronics industry from Europe, Japan and China on digitalisation measures in supply chains using qualitative content analysis. I find that while there are positive expectations regarding the effects of digital technologies on supply chain sustainability, their actual use and observable effects are still limited. Interview partners can only provide few examples from their own companies which show that sustainability goals have already been pursued through digitalisation of the supply chain or where sustainability effects, such as resource savings, have been demonstrably achieved. In the third study (section 4, joint work with Peter Neuhäusler, Melissa Dachrodt and Marcel Matthess), I conduct an econometric panel data analysis. I examine the relationship between the degree of Industry 4.0, energy consumption and energy intensity in ten manufacturing sectors in China between 2006 and 2019. The results suggest that overall, there is no significant relationship between the degree of Industry 4.0 and energy consumption or energy intensity in manufacturing sectors in China. However, differences can be found in subgroups of sectors. I find a negative correlation of Industry 4.0 and energy intensity in highly digitalised sectors, indicating an efficiency-enhancing effect of Industry 4.0 in these sectors. On the other hand, there is a positive correlation of Industry 4.0 and energy consumption for sectors with low energy consumption, which could be explained by the fact that digitalisation, such as the automation of previously mainly labour-intensive sectors, requires energy and also induces growth effects. In the discussion section (section 6) of this dissertation, I use the classification scheme of the three levels macro, meso and micro, as well as of direct and indirect environmental effects to classify the empirical observations into opportunities and risks, for example, with regard to the probability of rebound effects of digitalisation at the three levels. I link the investigated actor perspectives (policy makers, industry representatives), statistical data and additional literature across the system levels and consider political economy aspects to suggest fields of action for more sustainable (digitalised) industries. The dissertation thus makes two overarching contributions to the academic and societal discourse. First, my three empirical studies expand the limited state of research at the interface between digitalisation in industry and sustainability, especially by considering selected countries in the Global South and the example of China. Secondly, exploring the topic through data and methods from different disciplinary contexts and taking a socio-technical point of view, enables an analysis of (path) dependencies, uncertainties, and interactions in the socio-technical system across different system levels, which have often not been sufficiently considered in previous studies. The dissertation thus aims to create a scientifically and practically relevant knowledge basis for a value-guided, sustainability-oriented design of digitalisation in industry.
Essays in public economics

This cumulative dissertation uses economic theory and micro-econometric tools and evaluation methods to analyse public policies and their impact on welfare and individual behaviour. In particular, it focuses on policies in two distinct areas that represent fundamental societal challenges in the 21st century: the ageing of society and life in densely-populated urban agglomerations. Together, these areas shape important financial decisions in a person's life, impact welfare, and are driving forces behind many of the challenges in today's societies. The five self-contained research chapters of this thesis analyse the forward looking effects of pension reforms, affordable housing policies as well as a public transport subsidy and its effect on air pollution.
This research focuses on empowering leadership, a leadership style that shares autonomy and responsibilities with the followers. Empowering leadership enhances the meaningfulness of work by fostering participation in decision-making, expressing confidence in high performance, and providing autonomy in target setting (Cheong, 2016). I examine how empowering leadership affects followers’ reflection. I used data from 528 individuals across 172 teams and found a positive relationship between empowering leadership and followers’ reflection. Followers’ reflection, in turn, is negatively associated with followers’ withdrawal, which mediates the beneficial effect of empowering leadership on leaders’ emotional exhaustion. As for the leaders, I propose that empowering leadership is negatively related also to leaders’ emotional exhaustion. This research broadens our understanding of empowering leadership's effects on both followers and leaders. Moreover, it integrates empowering leadership, leader emotional exhaustion, and burnout literature. Overall, empowering leadership strengthens members’ reflective attitudes and behaviors, which result in reduced withdrawal (and increased presence and contribution) in teams. Because the members contribute to team effort more, the leaders experience less emotional exhaustion. Hence, my work not only identifies new ways through which empowering leadership positively affects followers but also shows how these positive effects on followers benefit the leaders’ well-being.
This cumulative doctoral thesis consists of five empirical studies examining various aspects of crisis and change from a management-accounting perspective. Within the first study, a bibliometric analysis is conducted. More precisely, based on publications between the financial crisis (since 2007) and the COVID-19 crisis (starting in 2020), the crisis literature in management accounting is investigated to uncover the most influential aspects of the field and to analyze the theoretical foundations of the literature. Moreover, this investigation also serves to identify future research streams and to provide starting points for future research. Based on a survey, the second study investigates the impact of several management-accounting tools on organizational resilience and its effect on a company’s competitive advantage during a crisis. The results show that their target-oriented use positively influences organizational resilience and contributes to the company’s competitive advantage during the crisis. The third study provides a more detailed view on the relationship between budgeting and risk management and their benefit for companies in times of crisis. For this purpose, the relationship between the relevance of budgeting functions and risk management in the company and the corresponding impact on company performance are investigated. The results show a positive relationship. However, a crisis can also affect the relationship between the company and its shareholders: Thus, the fourth study – based on publicly available data and a survey – examines the consequences of virtual annual general meetings on shareholder rights. The results show that, temporarily, particularly the right to information was severely restricted. For the following year, this problem was fixed, and ultimately, the virtual option was introduced permanently. The crisis has thus brought about a lasting change. But not only crises cause changes: The fifth study, also based on survey data, investigates the changes in the role of management accountants caused by digitalization. More precisely, it investigates how management accountants deal with tasks that are considered outdated and unattractive. The results of the study show that different types of personalities also act differently as far as the willingness to do those unattractive tasks is concerned, and career ambitions also influence that willingness. In addition to this, the results provide insights into the motivation of management accountants to conduct tasks and thus counteract existing assumptions based on stereotypes and clichés circulating within the research community.
This cumulative dissertation consists of three full empirical investigations based on three separate collections of data dealing with the phenomenon of negotiations in audit processes, which are combined in two research articles. In the first study, I examine internal auditors’ views on negotiation interactions with auditees. My research is based on 23 semi-structured interviews with internal auditors (14 in-house and 9 external service providers) to gain insight into when and about what (RQ1), why (RQ2), and how (RQ3) they negotiate with auditees. By adapting the Gibbins et al. (2001) negotiation framework to the context of internal auditing, I obtain specific process (negotiation issue, auditor-auditee process, and outcome) and context elements that form the basis of my analyses. Through the additional use of inductive procedures, I conclude that internal auditors negotiate when they face professional and non-professional resistance from auditees during the audit process (RQ1). This resistance occurs in a variety of audit types and audit issues. Internal auditors choose negotiations to overcome this resistance primarily out of functional interest, as they cannot simply instruct auditees to acknowledge the findings and implement the required actions (RQ2). I find that the implementation of the required actions is the main goal of the respondents, which is also an important quality factor for internal auditing. Although few respondents interpret these interactions with auditees as negotiations, all respondents use a variety of negotiation strategies to create value (e.g., cost cutting, logrolling, and bridging) and claim value (e.g. positional commitment and threats) (RQ3). Finally, I contribute to empirical research on internal audit negotiations and internal audit quality by shedding light on the black box of internal auditor-auditee interactions. The second study consists of two experiments that examine the effects of tax auditors’ emotion expressions during tax audit negotiations. In the first experiment, we demonstrate that auditors expressing anger obtain more concessions from taxpayers than auditors expressing happiness. This reveals that taxpayers interpret auditors’ emotions strategically and do not respond affectively. In the second experiment, we show that the experience with an auditor who expressed either happiness or anger reduces taxpayers’ post-audit compliance compared to the experience with an emotionally neutral auditor. Apparently, taxpayers use their experience with an emotional auditor to rationalize later noncompliance. Taken together, both experiments show the potentially detrimental effects of positive and negative emotion expressions by the auditor and point to the benefits of avoiding emotion expressions. We find that when auditors avoid emotion expressions this does not result in fewer concessions from taxpayers than when auditors express anger. However, when auditors avoid emotion expressions this leads to a significantly better evaluation of the taxpayer-auditor relationship and significantly reduces taxpayers’ post-audit noncompliance.
Creative intensive processes

Creativity – developing something new and useful – is a constant challenge in the working world. Work processes, services, or products must be sensibly adapted to changing times. To be able to analyze and, if necessary, adapt creativity in work processes, a precise understanding of these creative activities is necessary. Process modeling techniques are often used to capture business processes, represent them graphically and analyze them for adaptation possibilities. This has been very limited for creative work. An accurate understanding of creative work is subject to the challenge that, on the one hand, it is usually very complex and iterative. On the other hand, it is at least partially unpredictable as new things emerge. How can the complexity of creative business processes be adequately addressed and simultaneously manageable? This dissertation attempts to answer this question by first developing a precise process understanding of creative work. In an interdisciplinary approach, the literature on the process description of creativity-intensive work is analyzed from the perspective of psychology, organizational studies, and business informatics. In addition, a digital ethnographic study in the context of software development is used to analyze creative work. A model is developed based on which four elementary process components can be analyzed: Intention of the creative activity, Creation to develop the new, Evaluation to assess its meaningfulness, and Planning of the activities arising in the process – in short, the ICEP model. These four process elements are then translated into the Knockledge Modeling Description Language (KMDL), which was developed to capture and represent knowledge-intensive business processes. The modeling extension based on the ICEP model enables creative business processes to be identified and specified without the need for extensive modeling of all process details. The modeling extension proposed here was developed using ethnographic data and then applied to other organizational process contexts. The modeling method was applied to other business contexts and evaluated by external parties as part of two expert studies. The developed ICEP model provides an analytical framework for complex creative work processes. It can be comprehensively integrated into process models by transforming it into a modeling method, thus expanding the understanding of existing creative work in as-is process analyses.
Distances affect economic decision-making in numerous situations. The time at which we make a decision about future consumption has an impact on our consumption behavior. The spatial distance to employer, school or university impacts the place where we live and vice versa. The emotional closeness to other individuals influences our willingness to give money to them. This cumulative thesis aims to enrich the literature on the role of distance for economic decision-making. Thereby, each of my research projects sheds light on the impact of one kind of distance for efficient decision-making.
Negotiations are a way of joint decision-making and thereby a form of social conflict. By determining the concrete allocation of scarce resources, negotiations have a great impact on the value creation of companies. If companies succeed in achieving better negotiation results in the long term, they can increase their profitability. Ensuring a company's negotiation success is therefore an organizational issue of central importance. While the question of ensuring individual negotiation success has been the subject and topic of multidisciplinary research for a long time, the question of how organizations can implement and ensure continuous negotiation success remains largely unexplored. This dissertation therefore aims to investigate how companies enable their employees to consistently achieve better negotiation outcomes. It is significant that, in the corporate context, negotiators do not act as individuals but as embedded representatives of an organization, and that negotiations are not one-time events but recurring necessities for the existence of the organization instead. In organizations, those recurring processes with a similar fundamental structure are handled by routines. A planned improvement of routines is often forced by new artifacts. In this context, artifacts refer to human-created technologies with which humans interact within routines and therefore artifacts have a central influence on executing the routine. If negotiation activities in companies are represented by organizational routines, one central issue for improving companies’ negotiation performance is the artifacts’ incorporation into organizational negotiation routines that facilitate the efficient application of the insights from negotiation research. The dissertation consists of three studies that were written as research papers to examine artifacts in the organizational negotiation context. The first study focuses on the pre-negotiation stage and presents four tools to assist negotiation practitioners in efficiently preparing for negotiation. The study examines the negotiation preparation’s effectiveness and efficiency and the negotiation outcome in a case-based experiment. The second study is devoted to a closer examination of the barriers that inhibit the adoption of negotiation support systems (NSSs) as one kind of organizational negotiation artifact. The investigation is conducted using a structural equation model based on information from participating practitioners. The third study is concerned with the future of negotiation support system research. An exploratory study based on qualitative in-depth interviews with proven and published experts in the field aims to evaluate the current state of research. The general discussion of the dissertation connects, summarizes, and concludes the study results and derives implications for practice, limitations, and future research ideas.
The present dissertation conducts empirical research on the relationship between urban life and its economic costs, especially for the environment. On the one hand, existing gaps in research on the influence of population density on air quality are closed and, on the other hand, innovative policy measures in the transport sector are examined that are intended to make metropolitan areas more sustainable. The focus is on air pollution, congestion and traffic accidents, which are important for general welfare issues and represent significant cost factors for urban life. They affect a significant proportion of the world's population. While 55% of the world's people already lived in cities in 2018, this share is expected to reach approximately 68% by 2050.
The four self-contained chapters of this thesis can be divided into two sections: Chapters 2 and 3 provide new causal insights into the complex interplay between urban structures and air pollution. Chapters 4 and 5 then examine policy measures to promote non-motorised transport and their influence on air quality as well as congestion and traffic accidents.

Digitale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen fordern kontinuierliche Weiterbildung für Mitarbeiter im Vertrieb. Es halten sich in dieser Berufssparte aber immer noch einige Mythen zum Training von Vertriebsmitarbeitern. Unter anderem deshalb wurde in der Vergangenheit der Trainingsbedarf im Vertrieb stark vernachlässigt. Die Arbeit befasst sich deshalb zunächst mit der Frage, wie der Vertrieb in Deutschland aktuell geschult wird (unter Einbezug der Corona-Pandemie) und ob sich aus den Trainingsgewohnheiten erste Hinweise zur Erlangung eines strategischen Wettbewerbsvorteils ergeben könnten.
Dabei greift die Arbeit auf, dass Investitionen in das Training von Vertriebsmitarbeitern eine Anlage in die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Unternehmens sein könnten. Automatisierte Trainings, beispielsweise basierend auf Virtual Reality (VR) und Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI), könnten in der Aus- und Weiterbildung des Vertriebs einen effizienten Beitrag in der Sicherstellung eines strategischen Wettbewerbsvorteils leisten. Durch weitere Forschungsfragen befasst sich die Arbeit anschließend damit, wie ein automatisiertes Vertriebstraining mit KI- und VR-Inhalten unter Einbeziehung der Nutzer gestaltet werden muss, um Vertriebsmitarbeiter in einem dafür ausgewählten Verhandlungskontext zu trainieren. Dazu wird eine Anwendung mit Hilfe von Virtual Reality und Künstlicher Intelligenz in einem Verhandlungsdialog entwickelt, getestet und evaluiert.
Die vorliegende Arbeit liefert eine Basis für die Automatisierung von Vertriebstrainings und im erweiterten Sinne für Trainings im Allgemeinen.
Current business organizations want to be more efficient and constantly evolving to find ways to retain talent. It is well established that visionary leadership plays a vital role in organizational success and contributes to a better working environment. This study aims to determine the effect of visionary leadership on employees' perceived job satisfaction. Specifically, it investigates whether the mediators meaningfulness at work and commitment to the leader impact the relationship. I take support from job demand resource theory to explain the overarching model used in this study and broaden-and-build theory to leverage the use of mediators.
To test the hypotheses, evidence was collected in a multi-source, time-lagged design field study of 95 leader-follower dyads. The data was collected in a three-wave study, each survey appearing after one month. Data on employee perception of visionary leadership was collected in T1, data for both mediators were collected in T2, and employee perception of job satisfaction was collected in T3. The findings display that meaningfulness at work and commitment to the leader play positive intervening roles (in the form of a chain) in the indirect influence of visionary leadership on employee perceptions regarding job satisfaction.
This research offers contributions to literature and theory by first broadening the existing knowledge on the effects of visionary leadership on employees. Second, it contributes to the literature on constructs meaningfulness at work, commitment to the leader, and job satisfaction. Third, it sheds light on the mediation mechanism dealing with study variables in line with the proposed model. Fourth, it integrates two theories, job demand resource theory and broaden-and-build theory providing further evidence. Additionally, the study provides practical implications for business leaders and HR practitioners.
Overall, my study discusses the potential of visionary leadership behavior to elevate employee outcomes. The study aligns with previous research and answers several calls for further research on visionary leadership, job satisfaction, and mediation mechanism with meaningfulness at work and commitment to the leader.
Die Arbeit ist ein Beitrag zu einer grundlegenden Diskussion der Kapitalmarktforschung, dem messbaren Erfolg „aktiver vs. passiver“ Investmentstrategien. Der Autor setzt sich kritisch mit den wesentlichen Anlagestrategien und Modellen für Indexprodukte auseinander und beleuchtet zugleich Closet Indexing bei aktiv gemanagten Investmentfonds. Das Ergebnis zeigt, dass Closet Indexing nicht nur sporadisch auftritt, sondern eine weit verbreitete Anlagestrategie in vielen vermeintlich aktiv gemanagten Aktieninvestmentfonds ist.
Social networking site use and well-being - a nuanced understanding of a complex relationship

Social Networking Sites (SNSs) are ubiquitous and attract an enormous chair of the digital population. Their functionalities allow users to connect and interact with others and weave complex social networks in which social information is continuously disseminated between users. Besides the social value SNSs are generating, they likewise attract companies and allow for new forms of marketing, thereby creating considerable economic value alike. However, as SNSs grew in popularity, so did concerns about the impact of their use on social interactions in general and the well-being of individual users in particular. While existing scientific evidence points to both risk as well as benefits of SNS use, research still lacks a profound understanding of which aspects of SNSs enable an impact on well-being and which psychological processes on the part of the users underly and explain this relationship. Therefore, this thesis is dedicated to an in-depth exploration of the relationship between SNS use and well-being and aims to answer how SNS use can impact well-being. Primarily, it focuses on the unique technological features that characterize SNSs and enable potential well- being alterations and on specific psychological processes on the part of the users, underlying and explaining the relationship. For this purpose, the thesis first introduces the concept of well- being. It continues by presenting SNSs’ unique technological features, divided into specifics of the content disseminated on SNSs and the network structure of SNSs. Further, the thesis introduces three classes of psychological processes assumed most relevant for the relationship between SNSs and well-being: other-focused, self-focused, and contrastive processes.. It is assumed that the course and quality of these common processes change in the SNS context and that a complex interplay between the unique features of SNSs and these processes determines how SNSs may ultimately affect users' well-being - both in positive and negative ways. The dissertation comprises seven research articles, each of which focusses on a particular set of SNS characteristics, their interplay with one or more of the proposed psychological processes, and ultimately the resulting effects on user well-being or its key resilience and risk factors. The seven articles investigate this relationship using different methodological approaches. Three articles are based on either systematic or narrative literature reviews, one applies an empirical cross-sectional research design, and three articles present an experimental investigation. Thematically, two articles revolve around SNS use’s effect on self-esteem. Three articles examine the specific role of the emotion of envy and its potential to establish and perpetuate a well-being-damaging social climate on SNSs. The two last articles of this thesis revolve around the established assumption that active and passive SNS use, as different modalities of SNS use, cause differential effects on users’ well-being due to the involvement of different psychological processes. The results of this thesis illustrate different ways how SNSs can affect users’ well-being. The results suggest that especially contrastive processes play a decisive role in explaining potential well-being risks for SNS users. Their interplay with certain SNS features seems to foster upward social comparisons and feelings of envy, potentially leading to a complex set of deleterious effects on users’ well-being. At the same time, the findings illuminate ways in which SNSs can benefit users and their self-esteem – especially when SNS use promotes self- focused and social-feedback-based other-focused processes. The thesis and their findings illustrate that the relationship between SNSs and well-being is complex. Therefore, a nuanced perspective, taking into consideration both the technological uniqueness of SNSs and the psychological processes they are enabling, is crucial to understand how these technologies affect their users in good and potentially harmful ways. On the one hand, the gathered insights contribute to research, providing novel insights into the complex relationship between SNS use and well-being. On the other hand, the results enable a focused and action-oriented derivation of recommendations for stakeholders such as individual users, policymakers, and platform providers. The findings of this thesis can help them to better combat SNS-related risks and ultimately ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for users - and thus also the economic values of SNSs - in the long term.
Despite the importance of negotiations in companies and their contribution to strategic corporate planning, researchers have not yet focused on assessing the development of negotiations in the future. To broaden the field of futures research in negotiations and to provide empirical guidance about strategic business decisions to negotiators and managers, this work exploratively investigates the future of negotiations. The impact of trends on negotiations and negotiation behavior, as well as the development of future negotiation scenarios are therefore examined. Moreover, the preparation of negotiators for the future is analyzed and how effective negotiation teaching can be designed to improve negotiation performance.
Public administrations confront fundamental challenges, including globalization, digitalization, and an eroding level of trust from society. By developing joint public service delivery with other stakeholders, public administrations can respond to these challenges. This increases the importance of inter-organizational governance—a development often referred to as New Public Governance, which to date has not been realized because public administrations focus on intra-organizational practices and follow the traditional “governmental chain.”
E-government initiatives, which can lead to high levels of interconnected public services, are currently perceived as insufficient to meet this goal. They are not designed holistically and merely affect the interactions of public and non-public stakeholders. A fundamental shift toward a joint public service delivery would require scrutiny of established processes, roles, and interactions between stakeholders.
Various scientists and practitioners within the public sector assume that the use of blockchain institutional technology could fundamentally change the relationship between public and non-public stakeholders. At first glance, inter-organizational, joint public service delivery could benefit from the use of blockchain. This dissertation aims to shed light on this widespread assumption. Hence, the objective of this dissertation is to substantiate the effect of blockchain on the relationship between public administrations and non-public stakeholders.
This objective is pursued by defining three major areas of interest. First, this dissertation strives to answer the question of whether or not blockchain is suited to enable New Public Governance and to identify instances where blockchain may not be the proper solution. The second area aims to understand empirically the status quo of existing blockchain implementations in the public sector and whether they comply with the major theoretical conclusions. The third area investigates the changing role of public administrations, as the blockchain ecosystem can significantly increase the number of stakeholders.
Corresponding research is conducted to provide insights into these areas, for example, combining theoretical concepts with empirical actualities, conducting interviews with subject matter experts and key stakeholders of leading blockchain implementations, and performing a comprehensive stakeholder analysis, followed by visualization of its results.
The results of this dissertation demonstrate that blockchain can support New Public Governance in many ways while having a minor impact on certain aspects (e.g., decentralized control), which account for this public service paradigm. Furthermore, the existing projects indicate changes to relationships between public administrations and non-public stakeholders, although not necessarily the fundamental shift proposed by New Public Governance. Lastly, the results suggest that power relations are shifting, including the decreasing influence of public administrations within the blockchain ecosystem. The results raise questions about the governance models and regulations required to support mature solutions and the further diffusion of blockchain for public service delivery.
Essays in labor economics

This thesis offers insights into the process of workers decisions to invest into work-related training. Specifically, the role of personality traits and attitudes is analysed. The aim is to understand whether such traits contribute to an under-investment into training. Importantly, general and specific training are distinguished, where the worker’s productivity increases in many firms in the former and only in the current firm in the latter case. Additionally, this thesis contributes to the evaluation of the German minimum wage introduction in 2015, identifying causal effects on wages and working hours.
Chapters two to four focus on the work-related training decision. First, individuals with an internal locus of control see a direct link between their own actions and their labor market success, while external individuals connect their outcomes to fate, luck, and other people. Consequently, it can be expected that internal individuals expect higher returns to training and are, thus, more willing to participate. The results reflect this hypothesis with internal individuals being more likely to participate in general (but not specific) training. Second, training can be viewed either as a risky investment or as an insurance against negative labor income shocks. In both cases, risk attitudes are expected to play a role in the decision process. The data point towards risk seeking individuals being more likely to participate in general (but not specific) training, and thus, training being viewed on average as a risky investment. Third, job satisfaction influences behavioral decisions in the job context, where dissatisfied workers may react by neglecting their duties, improving the situation or quitting the job. In the first case, dissatisfied workers are expected to invest less in training, while the latter two reactions could lead to higher participation rates amongst dissatisfied workers. The results suggest that on average dissatisfied workers are less likely to invest into training than satisfied workers. However, closer inspections of quit intentions and different sources of dissatisfaction paint less clear pictures, pointing towards the complexity of the job satisfaction construct.
Chapters five and six evaluate the introduction of the minimum wage in Germany in 2015. First, in 2015 an increase in the growth of hourly wages can be identified as a causal effect of the minimum wage introduction. However, at the same time, a reduction in the weekly working hours results in an overall unchanged growth in monthly earnings. When considering the effects in 2016, the decrease in weekly working hours disappears, resulting in a significant increase in the growth of monthly earnings due to the minimum wage. Importantly, the analysis suggests that the increase in hourly wages was not sufficient to ensure all workers receiving the minimum wage. This points to non-compliance being an issue in the first years after the minimum wage introduction.
This cumulative doctoral thesis consists of three empirical studies that examine the role of top-level executives in shaping adverse financial reporting outcomes and other forms of corporate misconduct. The first study examines CEO effects on a wide range of offenses. Using data from enforcement actions by more than 50 U.S. federal agencies, regression re-sults show CEO effects on the likelihood, frequency, and severity of corporate misconduct. The findings hold for financial, labor-related, and environmental offenses; however, CEO effects are more pronounced for non-financial misconduct. Further results show a positive relation between CEO ability and non-financial misconduct, but no relation with financial misconduct, suggesting that higher CEO ability can have adverse consequences for employee welfare and society and public health. The second study focuses on CEO and CFO effects on financial misreporting. Using data on restatements and public enforcement actions, regression results show that the incremental effect of CFOs is economically larger than that of CEOs. This greater economic impact of CFOs is particularly pronounced for fraudulent misreporting. The findings remain consistent across different samples, methods, misreporting measures, and specification choices for the underlying conceptual mechanism, highlighting the important role of the CFO as a key player in the beyond-GAAP setting. The third study reexamines the relation between equity incentives and different reporting outcomes. The literature review reveals large variation in the empirical measures for firm size as standard control variable, equity incentives as key explanatory variables, and the reporting outcome of interest. Regres-sion results show that these design choices have a direct bearing on empirical results, with changes in t-statistics that often exceed typical thresholds for statistical significance. The find-ings hold for aggressive accrual management, earnings management through discretionary accruals, and material misstatements, suggesting that common design choices can have a large impact on whether equity incentives effects are considered significant or not.
On January 1, 2015, Germany introduced a general statutory minimum wage of €8.50 gross per hour. This thesis analyses the effects of the minimum wage introduction in Germany as well as wage floors in the European context, contributing to national and international research.
The second chapter of this dissertation summarizes the short-run effects of the minimum wage reform found in previous studies.
We show that the introduction of the minimum wage had a positive effect on wages at the bottom of the distribution. Yet, there was still a significant amount of non-compliance shortly after the reform. Additionally, previous evidence points to small negative employment effects mainly driven by a reduction in mini-jobs. Contrary to expectations, though, there were no effects on poverty and general inequality found in the short run. This is mostly due to the fact that working hours were reduced and the increase of hourly wages was therefore not reflected in monthly wages.
The third chapter identifies whether the job losses predicted in ex-ante studies materialized in the short run and, if so, which type of employment was affected the most. To identify the effects, this chapter (as well as chapter four) uses a regional difference-in-difference approach to estimate the effects on regular employment (part- and full-time) and mini-jobs.
Our results suggest that the minimum wage has slightly reduced overall employment, mainly due to a decline in mini-jobs.
The fourth chapter has the same methodological approach as the previous one. Its motivated by the fact that women are often overrepresented among low-wage employees. Thus, the primary research question in this chapter is whether the minimum wage has led to a narrowing of the gender wage gap. In order to answer that, we identify the effects on the wage gap at the 10th and 25th percentiles and at the mean of the underlying gender-specific wage distributions. Our results imply that for eligible employees the gender wage gap at the 10th percentile decreased by 4.6 percentage points between 2014 and 2018 in high-bite regions compared to low-bite regions. We estimate this to be a reduction of 32% compared to 2014. Higher up the distribution – i.e. at the 25th percentile and the mean – the effects are smaller and not as robust.
The fifth chapter keeps the gender-specific emphasis on minimum wage effects. However, in contrast to the rest of the dissertation, it widens the scope to other European Union countries. Following the rationale of the previous chapter, women could potentially benefit particularly from a minimum wage. However, they could also be more prone to suffer from the possibly induced job losses or reductions in working hours. Therefore, this chapter summarizes existing evidence from EU member states dealing with the relationship between wage floors and the gender wage gap. In addition, it provides a systematic summary of studies that examine the impact of minimum wages on employment losses or changes in working hours that particularly affect women. The evidence shows that higher wage floors are often associated with smaller gender wage gaps. With respect to employment, women do not appear to experience greater employment losses than men per se. However, studies show that the minimum wage has a particular impact on part-time workers. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the negative correlation between the minimum wage and the gender wage gap is related to the job losses of these lower-paid, often female, part-time workers. This working arrangement should therefore be specially focused on in the context of minimum wages.
Sustainable urban growth

This dissertation explores the determinants for sustainable and socially optimalgrowth in a city. Two general equilibrium models establish the base for this evaluation, each adding its puzzle piece to the urban sustainability discourse and examining the role of non-market-based and market-based policies for balanced growth and welfare improvements in different theory settings. Sustainable urban growth either calls for policy actions or a green energy transition. Further, R&D market failures can pose severe challenges to the sustainability of urban growth and the social optimality of decentralized allocation decisions. Still, a careful (holistic) combination of policy instruments can achieve sustainable growth and even be first best.
Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines Industrie 4.0 Reifegradindex für produzierende Unternehmen (KMU und Mittelstand) mit diskreter Produktion. Die Motivation zu dieser Arbeit entstand aus dem Zögern vieler Unternehmen – insbesondere KMU und Mittelstand – bei der Transformation in Richtung Industrie 4.0. Im Rahmen einer Marktstudie konnte belegt werden, dass 86 Prozent der befragten produzierenden Unternehmen kein für ihr Unternehmen geeignetes Industrie 4.0 Reifegradmodell gefunden haben, mit dem sie ihren Status Quo bewerten und Maßnahmen für einen höheren Grad der Reife ableiten könnten. Die Bewertung bestehender Reifegradmodelle zeigte Defizite hinsichtlich der Industrie 4.0 Abdeckung, der Betrachtung der sozio-technischen Dimensionen Mensch, Technik und Organisation sowie der Betrachtung von Management und Unternehmenskultur. Basierend auf den aktuellen Industrie 4.0 Technologien und Handlungsbereichen wurde ein neues, modular aufgebautes Industrie 4.0 Reifegradmodell entwickelt, das auf einer ganzheitlichen Betrachtung aller sozio-technischen Dimensionen Mensch, Technik und Organisation sowie deren Schnittstellen basiert. Das Modell ermittelt neben dem Overall Industry 4.0 Maturity Index (OI4MI) vier weitere Indizes zur Bewertung der Industrie 4.0 Reife des Unternehmens. Das Modell wurde bei einem Unternehmen validiert und steht nun als Template für darauf aufbauende Forschungsarbeiten zur Verfügung.
Digital transformation (DT) has not only been a major challenge in recent years, it is also supposed to continue to enormously impact our society and economy in the forthcoming decade. On the one hand, digital technologies have emerged, diffusing and determining our private and professional lives. On the other hand, digital platforms have leveraged the potentials of digital technologies to provide new business models. These dynamics have a massive effect on individuals, companies, and entire ecosystems. Digital technologies and platforms have changed the way persons consume or interact with each other. Moreover, they offer companies new opportunities to conduct their business in terms of value creation (e.g., business processes), value proposition (e.g., business models), or customer interaction (e.g., communication channels), i.e., the three dimensions of DT. However, they also can become a threat for a company's competitiveness or even survival. Eventually, the emergence, diffusion, and employment of digital technologies and platforms bear the potential to transform entire markets and ecosystems.
Against this background, IS research has explored and theorized the phenomena in the context of DT in the past decade, but not to its full extent. This is not surprising, given the complexity and pervasiveness of DT, which still requires far more research to further understand DT with its interdependencies in its entirety and in greater detail, particularly through the IS perspective at the confluence of technology, economy, and society. Consequently, the IS research discipline has determined and emphasized several relevant research gaps for exploring and understanding DT, including empirical data, theories as well as knowledge of the dynamic and transformative capabilities of digital technologies and platforms for both organizations and entire industries.
Hence, this thesis aims to address these research gaps on the IS research agenda and consists of two streams. The first stream of this thesis includes four papers that investigate the impact of digital technologies on organizations. In particular, these papers study the effects of new technologies on firms (paper II.1) and their innovative capabilities (II.2), the nature and characteristics of data-driven business models (II.3), and current developments in research and practice regarding on-demand healthcare (II.4). Consequently, the papers provide novel insights on the dynamic capabilities of digital technologies along the three dimensions of DT. Furthermore, they offer companies some opportunities to systematically explore, employ, and evaluate digital technologies to modify or redesign their organizations or business models.
The second stream comprises three papers that explore and theorize the impact of digital platforms on traditional companies, markets, and the economy and society at large. At this, paper III.1 examines the implications for the business of traditional insurance companies through the emergence and diffusion of multi-sided platforms, particularly in terms of value creation, value proposition, and customer interaction. Paper III.2 approaches the platform impact more holistically and investigates how the ongoing digital transformation and "platformization" in healthcare lastingly transform value creation in the healthcare market. Paper III.3 moves on from the level of single businesses or markets to the regulatory problems that result from the platform economy for economy and society, and proposes appropriate regulatory approaches for addressing these problems. Hence, these papers bring new insights on the table about the transformative capabilities of digital platforms for incumbent companies in particular and entire ecosystems in general.
Altogether, this thesis contributes to the understanding of the impact of DT on organizations and markets through the conduction of multiple-case study analyses that are systematically reflected with the current state of the art in research. On this empirical basis, the thesis also provides conceptual models, taxonomies, and frameworks that help describing, explaining, or predicting the impact of digital technologies and digital platforms on companies, markets and the economy or society at large from an interdisciplinary viewpoint.
Traditional organizations are strongly encouraged by emerging digital customer behavior and digital competition to transform their businesses for the digital age. Incumbents are particularly exposed to the field of tension between maintaining and renewing their business model. Banking is one of the industries most affected by digitalization, with a large stream of digital innovations around Fintech. Most research contributions focus on digital innovations, such as Fintech, but there are only a few studies on the related challenges and perspectives of incumbent organizations, such as traditional banks. Against this background, this dissertation examines the specific causes, effects and solutions for traditional banks in digital transformation − an underrepresented research area so far.
The first part of the thesis examines how digitalization has changed the latent customer expectations in banking and studies the underlying technological drivers of evolving business-to-consumer (B2C) business models. Online consumer reviews are systematized to identify latent concepts of customer behavior and future decision paths as strategic digitalization effects. Furthermore, the service attribute preferences, the impact of influencing factors and the underlying customer segments are uncovered for checking accounts in a discrete choice experiment. The dissertation contributes here to customer behavior research in digital transformation, moving beyond the technology acceptance model. In addition, the dissertation systematizes value proposition types in the evolving discourse around smart products and services as key drivers of business models and market power in the platform economy.
The second part of the thesis focuses on the effects of digital transformation on the strategy development of financial service providers, which are classified along with their firm performance levels. Standard types are derived based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), with facade digitalization as one typical standard type for low performing incumbent banks that lack a holistic strategic response to digital transformation. Based on this, the contradictory impact of digitalization measures on key business figures is examined for German savings banks, confirming that the shift towards digital customer interaction was not accompanied by new revenue models diminishing bank profitability. The dissertation further contributes to the discourse on digitalized work designs and the consequences for job perceptions in banking customer advisory. The threefold impact of the IT support perceived in customer interaction on the job satisfaction of customer advisors is disentangled.
In the third part of the dissertation, solutions are developed design-oriented for core action areas of digitalized business models, i.e., data and platforms. A consolidated taxonomy for data-driven business models and a future reference model for digital banking have been developed. The impact of the platform economy is demonstrated here using the example of the market entry by Bigtech. The role-based e3-value modeling is extended by meta-roles and role segments and linked to value co-creation mapping in VDML. In this way, the dissertation extends enterprise modeling research on platform ecosystems and value co-creation using the example of banking.
Moderne Technologien befähigen die beteiligten Akteure eines Produktionsprozesses die Informationsaufnahme, Entscheidungsfindung und -ausführung selbstständig auszuführen. Hierarchische Kontrollbeziehungen werden aufgelöst und die Entscheidungsfindung auf eine Vielzahl von Akteuren verteilt. Positive Folgen sind unter anderem die Nutzung lokaler Kompetenzen und ein schnelles Handeln vor Ort ohne (zeit-)aufwändige prozessübergreifende Planungsläufe durch eine zentrale Steuerungsinstanz. Die Bewertung der Dezentralität des Prozesses hilft beim Vergleich verschiedener Steuerungsstrategien und trägt so zur Beherrschung komplexerer Produktionsprozesse bei.
Obwohl die Kommunikationsstruktur der an der Entscheidungsfindung beteiligten Akteure zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt, existiert keine Methode, welche diese als Grundlage für die Operationalisierung der Dezentralität verwendet. Hier setzt diese Arbeit an. Es wird ein dreistufiges Bewertungsmodell entwickelt, dass die Dezentralität eines Produktionsprozesses auf Basis der Kommunikations- und Entscheidungsstruktur der am Prozess beteiligten, autonomen Akteure ermittelt.
Aufbauend auf einer Definition von Dezentralität von Produktionsprozessen werden Anforderungen an eine Kennzahl erhoben und - auf Basis der Kommunikationsstruktur - eine die strukturelle Autonomie der Akteure bestimmenden Kenngröße der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse ermittelt. Die Notwendigkeit der zusätzlichen Berücksichtigung der Entscheidungsstruktur wird basierend auf der Möglichkeit der Integration von Entscheidungsfindung und -ausführung begründet.
Die Differenzierung beider Faktoren bildet die Grundlage für die Klassifikation der Akteure; die Multiplikation beider Werte resultiert in dem die Autonomie eines Akteurs beschreibenden Kennwert tatsächliche Autonomie, welcher das Ergebnis der ersten Stufe des Modells darstellt. Homogene Akteurswerte charakterisieren eine hohe Dezentralität des Prozessschrittes, welcher Betrachtungsobjekt der zweiten Stufe ist. Durch einen Vergleich der vorhandenen mit der maximal möglichen Dezentralität der Prozessschritte wird auf der dritten Stufe der Autonomie Index ermittelt, welcher die Dezentralität des Prozesses operationalisiert.
Das erstellte Bewertungsmodell wird anhand einer Simulationsstudie im Zentrum Industrie 4.0 validiert. Dafür wird das Modell auf zwei Simulationsexperimente - einmal mit einer zentralen und einmal mit einer dezentralen Steuerung - angewendet und die Ergebnisse verglichen. Zusätzlich wird es auf einen umfangreichen Produktionsprozess aus der Praxis angewendet.
In the automotive industry, suppliers from the consumer electronics and high-tech industry are becoming increasingly relevant, for example in the context of automated vehicles. The carmakers’ purchasing organizations need to understand the power constellation in negotiations with these new suppliers, since negotiating power is the greatest lever for influencing the outcome of negotiations. This study analyzes the importance of organizational sources of power and their interplay with the products’ degree of innovation.
While estimated numbers of past and future climate migrants are alarming, the growing empirical evidence suggests that the association between adverse climate-related events and migration is not universally positive. This dissertation seeks to advance our understanding of when and how climate migration emerges by analyzing heterogeneous climatic influences on migration in low- and middle-income countries. To this end, it draws on established economic theories of migration, datasets from physical and social sciences, causal inference techniques and approaches from systematic literature review. In three of its five chapters, I estimate causal effects of processes of climate change on inequality and migration in India and Sub-Saharan Africa. By employing interaction terms and by analyzing sub-samples of data, I explore how these relationships differ for various segments of the population. In the remaining two chapters, I present two systematic literature reviews. First, I undertake a comprehensive meta-regression analysis of the econometric climate migration literature to summarize general climate migration patterns and explain the conflicting findings. Second, motivated by the broad range of approaches in the field, I examine the literature from a methodological perspective to provide best practice guidelines for studying climate migration empirically. Overall, the evidence from this dissertation shows that climatic influences on human migration are highly heterogeneous. Whether adverse climate-related impacts materialize in migration depends on the socio-economic characteristics of the individual households, such as wealth, level of education, agricultural dependence or access to adaptation technologies and insurance. For instance, I show that while adverse climatic shocks are generally associated with an increase in migration in rural India, they reduce migration in the agricultural context of Sub-Saharan Africa, where the average wealth levels are much lower so that households largely cannot afford the upfront costs of moving. I find that unlike local climatic shocks which primarily enhance internal migration to cities and hence accelerate urbanization, shocks transmitted via agricultural producer prices increase migration to neighboring countries, likely due to the simultaneous decrease in real income in nearby urban areas. These findings advance our current understanding by showing when and how economic agents respond to climatic events, thus providing explicit contexts and mechanisms of climate change effects on migration in the future. The resulting collection of findings can guide policy interventions to avoid or mitigate any present and future welfare losses from climate change-related migration choices.

While innovation allows strengthening platforms amidst competition, it can hurt contributors when introducing core features that are already provided by third-party developers (Platform Coring).
This book addresses the underexplored phenomenon of Platform Coring and provides strategical guidance for platform owners and third-party contributors. Platform owners are well-advised to carefully consider the benefits and risks for their platform ecosystem.
The book contributes by highlighting avenues to employ Platform Coring for the competitive advantage of the platform and ecosystem simultaneously.
This paper-based dissertation aims to contribute to the open innovation (OI) and technology management (TM) research fields by investigating their mechanisms, and potentials at the operational level. The dissertation connects the well-known concept of technology management with OI formats and applies these on specific manufacturing technologies within a clearly defined setting.
Technological breakthroughs force firms to continuously adapt and reinvent themselves. The pace of technological innovation and their impact on firms is constantly increasing due to more connected infrastructure and accessible resources (i.e. data, knowledge). Especially in the manufacturing sector it is one key element to leverage new technologies to stay competitive. These technological shifts call for new management practices.
TM supports firms with various tools to manage these shifts at different levels in the firm. It is a multifunctional and multidisciplinary field as it deals with all aspects of integrating technological issues into business decision-making and is directly relevant to a number of core business processes. Thus, it makes sense to utilize this theory and their practices as a foundation of this dissertation. However, considering the increasing complexity and number of technologies it is not sufficient anymore for firms to only rely on previous internal R&D and managerial practices. OI can expanse these practices by involving distributed innovation processes and accessing further external knowledge sources. This expansion can lead to an increasing innovation performance and thereby accelerate the time-to-market of technologies.
Research in this dissertation was based on the expectations that OI formats will support the R&D activities of manufacturing technologies on the operational level by providing access to resources, knowledge, and leading-edge technology. The dissertation represents uniqueness regarding the rich practical data sets (observations, internal documents, project reviews) drawn from a very large German high-tech firm. The researcher was embedded in an R&D unit within the operational TM department for manufacturing technologies. The analyses include 1.) an exploratory in-depth analysis of a crowdsourcing initiative to elaborate the impact on specific manufacturing technologies, 2.) a deductive approach for developing a technology evaluation score model to create a common understanding of the value of selected manufacturing technologies at the operational level, and 3.) an abductive reasoning approach in form of a longitudinal case study to derive important indicator for the in-process activities of science-based partnership university-industry collaboration format. Thereby, the dissertation contributed to research and practice 1.) linkages of TM and OI practices to assimilate technologies at the operational level, 2.) insights about the impact of CS on manufacturing technologies and a related guideline to execute CS initiatives in this specific environment 3.) introduction of manufacturing readiness levels and further criteria into the TM and OI research field to support decision-makers in the firm in gaining a common understanding of the maturity of manufacturing technologies and, 4.) context-specific important indicators for science based university-industry collaboration projects and a holistic framework to connect TM with the university-industry collaboration approach
The findings of this dissertation illustrate that OI formats can support the acceleration of time-to-market of manufacturing technologies and further improve the technical requirements of the product by leveraging external capabilities. The conclusions and implications made are intended to foster further research and improve managerial practices to evolve TM into an open collaborative context with interconnectivities between all internal and external involved technologies, individuals and organizational levels.
Negotiations between buyers and suppliers directly influence a company’s costs, revenue, and consequently its profits. The outcome of these negotiations relies heavily on the companies’ as well as the negotiators’ power position. Across three empirical articles the author demonstrates how the own power position can first be identified as well as improved and subsequently used to maximize profits in negotiations between sellers and buyers. In the first paper the sources underlying buyer and supplier power are identified and weighted. The results of the first paper show the impact of each single sources on the buyer and supplier power. The number of suppliers available for one product is by far the most important source of power for both sides. The results indicate that a higher number of suppliers leads to a better power position of the buyer and simultaneously to an inferior power position of a single supplier. The second paper aims to examine the impact of the number of suppliers on the outcome of buyer-seller-negotiations thereby considering the innovation level of the products purchased. The results of the second study which are based on real negotiation data from a German car manufacturer indicate that the number of available suppliers has a stronger impact on the negotiation outcome for innovative than for functional, less innovative products. The third paper analyzes how the ability to take the counterpart’s perspective (perspective taking ability) influences the negotiation outcome. This relationship is examined for different power positions. The results indicate that a negotiator’s high perspective taking ability leads to a more unfavorable negotiation outcome compared to low perspective taking ability. Simultaneously, high perspective taking ability causes a more positive perception of the conducted negotiation than low perspective taking ability. This contradictory effect of perspective taking ability bears the risk for buyers and suppliers to assess an unfavorable outcome as positive. Finally, the results of the papers are summarized and discussed. The dissertation concludes with implications for practice, limitations of the work, and approaches for future research.
Essays on Macroeconomics

This dissertation consists of four self-contained papers. Each paper deals with a specific macroeconomic question. The first paper assesses the distributional implications of environmental policies from a general equilibrium macroeconomic perspective. I develop a New-Keynesian model with several types of uncertainties and frictions that incorporates liquidity constrained households. The model is calibrated to match the German economy and the numerical results show that climate policy instruments can be associated with regressive welfare effects. Furthermore, the analysis shows that these effects can be mitigated through an appropriate revenue recycling scheme. The second paper deals with short-run inequality dynamics within a real business cycle model. An empirical evaluation shows that the cyclical components of income inequality, the capital share and real GDP are correlated. We develop tractable representation of common inequality indicators in the general equilibrium model and show that the observed pattern is driven by innovations in the capital share. A Bayesian estimation of the model for the United States with data for the period 1948 to 2017 indicates that the model provides a reasonable fit for the data and successfully replicates the observed pattern of cyclical correlations. The third paper empirically examines the effects of banking regulation on the risk-relationship between sovereigns and banks. Based on a comprehensive data set of the European banking sector, we find that the implementation of the novel European banking regulation framework significantly contributed to a weakening of the risk-link between sovereigns and banks.The fourth paper empirically examines the role of institutional experience for institutional development in transition economies. To capture institutional experience, we develop a novel index, based on historical country records. The results of cross-sectional and panel estimations suggest that institutional experience helps to explain the divergent economic and institutional development in transition economies after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The goal of this dissertation is to contribute to the corporate foresight research field by investigating capabilities, practices, and challenges particularly in the context of interorganizational settings and networked organizations informed by the theoretical perspectives of the relational view and dynamic capabilities.
Firms are facing an increasingly complex environment and highly complex product and service landscapes that often require multiple organizations to collaborate for innovation and offerings. Public-private partnerships that are targeted at supporting this have been introduced by policy-makers in the recent past. One example for such a partnership is the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) with multiple Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). The EIT has been initiated by the European Commission in 2008 with the ambition of addressing grand societal challenges, driving innovativeness of European companies, and supporting systemic change. The resulting network organizations are managed similarly to corporations with managers, boards, and firm-like governance structures. EIT Digital as one of the EIT KICs are a central case of this work.
Research in this dissertation was based on the expectation that corporate foresight activities will increasingly be embedded in such interorganizational settings and a) can draw on such settings for the benefit of themselves and b) may contribute to shared visions, trust building and planning in these network organizations. In this dissertation the EIT Digital (formerly EIT ICT Labs) is a central case, supplemented with insights from three additional cases. I draw on the rich theoretical understanding of the resource-based view, dynamic capabilities, and particularly the relational view to further the discussion in the field of corporate foresight—defined as foresight in organizations in contrast to foresight with a macro-economical perspective—towards a relational understanding. Further, I use and revisit Rohrbeck’s Maturity Model for the Future Orientation of Firms as conceptual frame for corporate foresight in interorganizational settings. The analyses—available as four individual publications complemented by on additional chapter—are designed as exploratory case studies based on multiple data sources including an interview series with 49 persons, two surveys (N=54, n=20), three supplementary interviews, access to key documents and presentations, and observation through participation in meetings and activities of the EIT Digital. This research setting allowed me to contribute to corporate foresight research and practice by 1) integrating relational constructs primarily drawn from the relational view and dynamic capabilities research into the corporate foresight research stream, 2) exploring and understanding capabilities that are required for corporate foresight in interorganizational and networked organizations, 3) discussing and extending the Maturity Model for network organizations, and 4) to support individual organizations to tie their foresight systems effectively to networked foresight systems.
With his September 2015 speech “Breaking the tragedy of the horizon”, the President of the Central Bank of England, Mark Carney, put climate change on the agenda of financial market regulators. Until then, climate change had been framed mainly as a problem of negative externalities leading to long-term economic costs, which resulted in countries trying to keep the short-term costs of climate action to a minimum. Carney argued that climate change, as well as climate policy, can also lead to short-term financial risks, potentially causing strong adjustments in asset prices. Analysing the effect of a sustainability transition on the financial sector challenges traditional economic and financial analysis and requires a much deeper understanding of the interrelations between climate policy and financial markets.
This dissertation thus investigates the implications of climate policy for financial markets as well as the role of financial markets in a transition to a sustainable economy. The approach combines insights from macroeconomic and financial risk analysis. Following an introduction and classification in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 shows a macroeconomic analysis that combines ambitious climate targets (negative externality) with technological innovation (positive externality), adaptive expectations and an investment program, resulting in overall positive macroeconomic outcomes. The analysis also reveals the limitations of climate economic models in their representation of financial markets. Therefore, the subsequent part of this dissertation is concerned with the link between climate policies and financial markets. In Chapter 3, an empirical analysis of stock-market responses to the announcement of climate policy targets is performed to investigate impacts of climate policy on financial markets. Results show that 1) international climate negotiations have an effect on asset prices and 2) investors increasingly recognize transition risks in carbon-intensive investments. In Chapter 4, an analysis of equity markets and the interbank market shows that transition risks can potentially affect a large part of the equity market and that financial interconnections can amplify negative shocks. In Chapter 5, an analysis of mortgage loans shows how information on climate policy and the energy performance of buildings can be integrated into risk management and reflected in interest rates.
While costs of climate action have been explored at great depth, this dissertation offers two main contributions. First, it highlights the importance of a green investment program to strengthen the macroeconomic benefits of climate action. Second, it shows different approaches on how to integrate transition risks and opportunities into financial market analysis. Anticipating potential losses and gains in the value of financial assets as early as possible can make the financial system more resilient to transition risks and can stimulate investments into the decarbonization of the economy.
Das Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation war es herauszuarbeiten, ob Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein den Konsum von Luxusgütern beeinflusst und ob verschiedene Moderatoren einen Einfluss auf diesen Zusammenhang ausüben. Das Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein wurde dabei basierend auf dem von Balderjahn et al. (2013) entwickelten Consciousness-for-sustainable-consumption-Modell durch die ökologische, soziale und die ökonomische Nachhaltigkeit sowie ergänzend durch das Tierschutzbewusstsein und Bewusstsein für lokale Produktion repräsentiert. Als Moderatoren dienten das Streben nach sozialer Anerkennung und Prestige, Materialismus, Hedonismus und Traditionsbewusstsein. Für die Aufdeckung möglicher Zusammenhänge zwischen den verschiedenen Dimensionen der Nachhaltigkeit und Luxuskonsum wurde eine Prädiktorenanalyse durchgeführt. Moderatorenanalysen offenbarten zusätzlich, ob ein Einfluss der verschiedenen Moderatoren auf die einzelnen Zusammenhänge vorlag. Die Untersuchung zeigte, dass jeweils das Umweltbewusstsein, das Bewusstsein für genügsamen Konsum sowie das Bewusstsein für schuldenfreien Konsum als Teil der ökonomischen Nachhaltigkeit und das Tierschutzbewusstsein einen Einfluss auf den Luxuskonsum ausüben. Darüber hinaus konnten insgesamt sieben Einflüsse durch die verschiedenen Moderatorvariablen auf die unterschiedlichen Zusammenhänge zwischen den Nachhaltigkeitsdimensionen und Luxuskonsum aufgedeckt werden.
This thesis offers new insights on the effects of Start-Up Subsidies (SUS) for unemployed individuals as a special kind of active labor market program (ALMP) that aims to re-integrate individuals into the labor market via the route of self-employment. Moreover, this thesis contributes to the literature on methods for causal inference when the treatment variable is continuous rather than binary. For example, this is the case when individuals differ in their degree of exposure to a common treatment.
The analysis of the effects of SUS focuses on the main current German program called “Gründungszuschuss” (New Start-Up Subsidy, NSUS) after its reform in 2011. Average Effects on participants' labor market outcomes - as measured by employment and earnings - as well as subjective well-being are estimated mainly based on propensity score matching (PSM) techniques. PSM aims to achieve balance in terms of observed characteristics by matching participants with at least one comparable non-participant in terms of their probability to receive the treatment. This estimation strategy is valid as long as all relevant characteristics that explain selection patterns into treatment are observed and included in the estimation of the propensity score. To make our analysis as credible as possible, we control for a large vector of characteristics as observed through the combination of rich administrative data from the Federal Employment Agency as well as through survey data.
Chapters two to four of this thesis puts special emphasis on aspects regarding (the evaluation of) SUS programs that have received no or only limited attention thus far. The first aspect relates to the interplay of institutional details of the program and its effectiveness. So far, relatively little is known about the importance of SUS program features such as the duration of support. Second, there is no experimental benchmark evaluation of SUS available and thus, the reliability of non-experimental estimation techniques such as PSM is of crucial importance as estimates are biased when relevant confounders are omitted from the analysis. Third, there may be potentially detrimental effects of transitioning into (relatively risky) self-employment on subjective well-being among subsidized founders out of unemployment. These were to remain undetected if the analysis would focus exclusively on labor market outcomes of participants. The results indicate positive long-term effects of SUS participation on employment and earnings among participants. These effects are substantially larger than what estimated before the reform, indicating room for improvement in program design via changes in institutional details. Moreover, non-experimental estimates of treatment effects are remarkably robust to hidden confounding. Regarding subjective well-being, this thesis finds a positive long-run impact on job satisfaction and a detrimental effect on satisfaction with social security. The latter appears to be driven by adverse effects on social insurance contributions.
In chapter five, a novel automated covariate balancing technique for the estimation of causal effects in the context of continuous treatments is derived and assessed regarding its performance compared to other (automated) balancing techniques. Although binary research designs that only differentiate between participants and non-participants of some treatment remain the most-common case in empirical practice, many applications can be adapted to include continuous treatments as well. Often, this will allow for more meaningful estimates of causal effects in order to further improve the design of programs. In the context of SUS, one may further investigate the effects of the size of monetary support or its duration on participants' labor market outcomes. Both Monte-Carlo investigations and analysis of two well-known datasets suggests superior performance of the proposed Entropy Balancing for continuous treatments (EBCT) compared to other existing estimation strategies.
This dissertation examines the activity of knowledge sharing by public employees in the workplace. Building on the Rubicon model of human behavior formation, I use a threefold approach to analyze the knowledge-sharing process: public employees’ motivation to share knowledge, their intention to share, and knowledge sharing behavior as such. The first article maps the knowledge-sharing behavior of public employees. It builds a typology of behavioral patterns and shows that public employees mainly share their knowledge responsively and directly with a knowledge receiver rather than an information medium. The second article elaborates on the construct of knowledge-sharing motivation and develops a scale to measure this kind of work motivation in a selective and domain-specific way. Data from three studies indicate three dimensions of knowledge-sharing motivation, namely appreciation, growth and altruism, and tangible rewards. Based on these dimensions, the third article analyzes whether the satisfaction of public employees’ underlying needs can foster ther knowledge-sharing intention. The study indicates that both tested treatments (appreciation by co-workers, benefits in a performance appraisal) positively affect knowledge-sharing intention if it is explicit knowledge that ought to be shared. However, no effects of either treatment can be found if implicit knowledge is shared. Hence, to foster sharing of explicit knowledge, the analyzed motivation-enhancing rewards can be used in public management practice. To enhance implicit knowledge sharing, ability- and opportunity-enhancing management instruments are discussed. All in all, this dissertation integrates a micro-level perspective on human knowledge sharing into a meso-level perspective on organizational knowledge management. It adds to the literature on workplace behaviors of public employees and knowledge management and aims to incorporate knowledge sharing and management into the public administration and management literature.
Die Gesundheitswirtschaft in Deutschland steht vor zahlreichen Veränderungen in ihrem Umfeld. Dabei mangelt es der Krankenhauslandschaft an ärztlichem Personal. Es fehlt insbesondere an Arztstunden bei zugleich steigendem Bedarf an medizinischen Leistungen. Der demografische Wandel, Abwanderung ins Ausland (z. B. in die Schweiz) und Extrapolationen wie Feminisierung des Arztberufs und der Wertewandel respektive Generationenforschung begünstigen diese
Entwicklung. Zudem wird der Arbeitsplatz Krankenhaus zunehmend als unattraktiv von zukünftigen Arbeitnehmerkohorten angesehen. Nachwuchsärzte entscheiden sich bereits im Studium vermehrt gegen die kurative Medizin beziehungsweise gegen eine medizinisch-klinische Tätigkeit. Ein virulentes Beschaffungsproblem zeichnet sich ab, das es zu lösen gilt.
Das Forschungsziel ist die Entwicklung eines ganzheitlichen strategischen Lösungsansatzes mit marktorientierter Akzentuierung für den Arbeitgeber Krankenhaus. Dabei wird das Krankenhaus als wissens- und kompetenzintensive Dienstleistungsorganisation definiert. Employer Branding stellt den Bezugsrahmen eines marktorientierten Personalmanagements dar. Ein forschungstheoretischer Unterbau wird durch strategische Managementansätze integriert. Employer Branding schlägt die Brücke vom Market-based View zum Competence-based View und ist Markenmanagement im Kontext des strategischen Personalmanagements. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein holistischer Bezugsrahmen vorgestellt, der die Wirkungszusammenhänge respektive Employer Branding darstellt. Das Herzstück ist die Employer Value Proposition, die auf der Markenidentität der Organisation basiert. Ziel des Employer Branding Ansatzes ist es, unter anderem eine präferenzerzeugende Wirkung im Prozess der Arbeitsplatzwahl sicherzustellen.
Die Zielrichtung und die Erkenntnis-Interessen erfordern einen breit angelegten Forschungsansatz, der qualitative und quantitative Methoden kombiniert. Ziel der leitfadengesteuerten Tiefeninterviews (exploratives Studiendesign) ist es, bestehende und noch zu entwickelnde Kompetenzstärken der Krankenhausorganisationen zu identifizieren. Bei der Stichprobe handelt es sich um ein „Typical Case Sampling“ (N=12). Defizitäre Befunde, welche Werte und Attraktivitätsfaktoren bei angehenden Ärzten ausgeprägt sind, werden bestätigt. In der Krankenhauslandschaft wird eine fragmentarische und reaktive Herangehensweise identifiziert, die die erfolgreiche Rekrutierung von qualifiziertem Krankenhauspersonal erschwert.
Durch die qualitative Marktforschung werden Anforderungen des Marktes – also zukünftiges, ärztliches Krankenhauspersonal – auf faktorenanalytischer Basis analysiert. Die Stichprobe (N=475) ist isomorph. Dabei wird der Prozess der Einstellungsbildung in das neobehavioristische Erklärungsmodell des Käuferverhaltens eingeordnet. Die Vereinbarkeit von Beruf, Karriere und Familie sowie die betriebliche Kinderbetreuung werden als Schlüsselkomponenten erkannt.
Wichtigste Arbeitswerte in Bezug auf einen attraktiven Arbeitgeber sind Verlässlichkeit, Verantwortung und Respekt. Diese Komponenten haben kommunikativen Nutzen und Differenzierungskraft. Schließlich bewerten Bewerber ein Krankenhaus positiver im Prozess der Arbeitsplatzwahl, je mehr die Werte des potentiellen Arbeitnehmers mit dem Werteprofil der Person übereinstimmen (Person-Organisation Fit).
Krankenhausorganisationen, die den Employer Branding Ansatz implementieren und als Chance zur Definition ihrer Stärken, ihrer Vorzüge und ihres Leistungsangebots als Arbeitgeber annehmen, rüsten sich für das verstärkte Werben um Jungmediziner. Schließlich setzt Employer Branding als marktorientierter Strategieansatz intern und extern Kräfte frei, die Differenzierungsvorteile gegenüber anderen Arbeitgebern bringen. Dabei hat Employer Branding positive Auswirkungen auf den Human Ressource-Bereich entlang der Wertschöpfungskette und mindert das gesamtwirtschaftliche Problem.
Zufriedenheitsanalysen durch Patientenbefragungen, wie in diesem Fall der neu entwickele und getestet Fragebogen (HNO-PROM), haben drei Säulen. Es kann zum einen eine bessere Patientenbindung geschaffen werden, die Qualität kann gemessen, verglichen und optimiert werden und es kann ein Mitarbeiterleitfaden im Sinne einer „Corporate Identity“ erstellt werden, welcher konkrete Managementimplikationen im Sinne von Handlungsimplikationen enthält. Der Leitgedanke des Qualitätsmanagements ist die Patientenorientierung im Sinne der Patientenzentrierten Medizin. Hierbei sollen nicht nur Wünsche und Bedürfnisse des Patienten erfüllt werden, sondern vorallem auch die Zufriedenheit gemessen und geplant werden. Gleichzeit muss man in diesem Zusammenhang die Behandlung der Patienten als Dienstleistung verstehen und die größtmögliche Zufriedenheit des Patienten als primäres Ziel setzen. Dies führt zu einer Kundenbindung dadurch, dass Patienten sowohl eine gleichbleibende Qualität erwarten können als auch und auch weiche Faktoren ihren Wünschen entsprechen werden. Corporate Identity mit dem Ziel als Unternehmen einheitlich für die Werte und damit die Qualität zu stehen.. Dies ermöglicht, das Wohlbefinden in der Vorstellung der Patienten beginnen zu lassen und dadurch Vertrauen zu schaffen. Alle drei Säulen haben nicht nur die Patientenzufriedenheit zum Ziel, sondern in gleichem Maße auch die Positionierung einer Institution auf dem Gesundheitsmarkt und damit die Verbesserung der Kosten-Nutzen-Rechnung durch ein positives Outcome. Damit fördern Zufriedenheitsanalysen nicht nur die ökonomische Position einer Abteilung, sondern behalten gleichermaßen die ethischen Aspekte einer Arzt-Patienten-Beziehung im Blick.
Modern health care systems are characterized by pronounced prevention and cost-optimized treatments. This dissertation offers novel empirical evidence on how useful such measures can be. The first chapter analyzes how radiation, a main pollutant in health care, can negatively affect cognitive health. The second chapter focuses on the effect of Low Emission Zones on public heath, as air quality is the major external source of health problems. Both chapters point out potentials for preventive measures. Finally, chapter three studies how changes in treatment prices affect the reallocation of hospital resources. In the following, I briefly summarize each chapter and discuss implications for health care systems as well as other policy areas. Based on the National Educational Panel Study that is linked to data on radiation, chapter one shows that radiation can have negative long-term effects on cognitive skills, even at subclinical doses. Exploiting arguably exogenous variation in soil contamination in Germany due to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the findings show that people exposed to higher radiation perform significantly worse in cognitive tests 25 years later. Identification is ensured by abnormal rainfall within a critical period of ten days. The results show that the effect is stronger among older cohorts than younger cohorts, which is consistent with radiation accelerating cognitive decline as people get older. On average, a one-standarddeviation increase in the initial level of CS137 (around 30 chest x-rays) is associated with a decrease in the cognitive skills by 4.1 percent of a standard deviation (around 0.05 school years). Chapter one shows that sub-clinical levels of radiation can have negative consequences even after early childhood. This is of particular importance because most of the literature focuses on exposure very early in life, often during pregnancy. However, population exposed after birth is over 100 times larger. These results point to substantial external human capital costs of radiation which can be reduced by choices of medical procedures. There is a large potential for reductions because about one-third of all CT scans are assumed to be not medically justified (Brenner and Hall, 2007). If people receive unnecessary CT scans because of economic incentives, this chapter points to additional external costs of health care policies. Furthermore, the results can inform the cost-benefit trade-off for medically indicated procedures. Chapter two provides evidence about the effectiveness of Low Emission Zones. Low Emission Zones are typically justified by improvements in population health. However, there is little evidence about the potential health benefits from policy interventions aiming at improving air quality in inner-cities. The chapter ask how the coverage of Low Emission Zones air pollution and hospitalization, by exploiting variation in the roll out of Low Emission Zones in Germany. It combines information on the geographic coverage of Low Emission Zones with rich panel data on the universe of German hospitals over the period from 2006 to 2016 with precise information on hospital locations and the annual frequency of detailed diagnoses. In order to establish that our estimates of Low Emission Zones’ health impacts can indeed be attributed to improvements in local air quality, we use data from Germany’s official air pollution monitoring system and assign monitor locations to Low Emission Zones and test whether measures of air pollution are affected by the coverage of a Low Emission Zone. Results in chapter two confirm former results showing that the introduction of Low Emission Zones improved air quality significantly by reducing NO2 and PM10 concentrations. Furthermore, the chapter shows that hospitals which catchment areas are covered by a Low Emission Zone, diagnose significantly less air pollution related diseases, in particular by reducing the incidents of chronic diseases of the circulatory and the respiratory system. The effect is stronger before 2012, which is consistent with a general improvement in the vehicle fleet’s emission standards. Depending on the disease, a one-standard-deviation increase in the coverage of a hospitals catchment area covered by a Low Emission Zone reduces the yearly number of diagnoses up to 5 percent. These findings have strong implications for policy makers. In 2015, overall costs for health care in Germany were around 340 billion euros, of which 46 billion euros for diseases of the circulatory system, making it the most expensive type of disease caused by 2.9 million cases (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2017b). Hence, reductions in the incidence of diseases of the circulatory system may directly reduce society’s health care costs. Whereas chapter one and two study the demand-side in health care markets and thus preventive potential, chapter three analyzes the supply-side. By exploiting the same hospital panel data set as in chapter two, chapter three studies the effect of treatment price shocks on the reallocation of hospital resources in Germany. Starting in 2005, the implementation of the German-DRG-System led to general idiosyncratic treatment price shocks for individual hospitals. Thus far there is little evidence of the impact of general price shocks on the reallocation of hospital resources. Additionally, I add to the exiting literature by showing that price shocks can have persistent effects on hospital resources even when these shocks vanish. However, simple OLS regressions would underestimate the true effect, due to endogenous treatment price shocks. I implement a novel instrument variable strategy that exploits the exogenous variation in the number of days of snow in hospital catchment areas. A peculiarity of the reform allowed variation in days of snow to have a persistent impact on treatment prices. I find that treatment price increases lead to increases in input factors such as nursing staff, physicians and the range of treatments offered but to decreases in the treatment volume. This indicates supplier-induced demand. Furthermore, the probability of hospital mergers and privatization decreases. Structural differences in pre-treatment characteristics between hospitals enhance these effects. For instance, private and larger hospitals are more affected. IV estimates reveal that OLS results are biased towards zero in almost all dimensions because structural hospital differences are correlated with the reallocation of hospital resources. These results are important for several reasons. The G-DRG-Reform led to a persistent polarization of hospital resources, as some hospitals were exposed to treatment price increases, while others experienced reductions. If hospitals increase the treatment volume as a response to price reductions by offering unnecessary therapies, it has a negative impact on population wellbeing and public spending. However, results show a decrease in the range of treatments if prices decrease. Hospitals might specialize more, thus attracting more patients. From a policy perspective it is important to evaluate if such changes in the range of treatments jeopardize an adequate nationwide provision of treatments. Furthermore, the results show a decrease in the number of nurses and physicians if prices decrease. This could partly explain the nursing crisis in German hospitals. However, since hospitals specialize more they might be able to realize efficiency gains which justify reductions in input factors without loses in quality. Further research is necessary to provide evidence for the impact of the G-DRG-Reform on health care quality. Another important aspect are changes in the organizational structure. Many public hospitals have been privatized or merged. The findings show that this is at least partly driven by the G-DRG-Reform. This can again lead to a lack in services offered in some regions if merged hospitals specialize more or if hospitals are taken over by ecclesiastical organizations which do not provide all treatments due to moral conviction. Overall, this dissertation reveals large potential for preventive health care measures and helps to explain reallocation processes in the hospital sector if treatment prices change. Furthermore, its findings have potentially relevant implications for other areas of public policy. Chapter one identifies an effect of low dose radiation on cognitive health. As mankind is searching for new energy sources, nuclear power is becoming popular again. However, results of chapter one point to substantial costs of nuclear energy which have not been accounted yet. Chapter two finds strong evidence that air quality improvements by Low Emission Zones translate into health improvements, even at relatively low levels of air pollution. These findings may, for instance, be of relevance to design further policies targeted at air pollution such as diesel bans. As pointed out in chapter three, the implementation of DRG-Systems may have unintended side-effects on the reallocation of hospital resources. This may also apply to other providers in the health care sector such as resident doctors.

Negotiations have become a central aspect of managerial life and influence a company’s profit significantly. This is why organizations generally endeavor to increase their negotiation performance. Over the last decades, besides other factors, research found goal setting to be one of the best predictor of negotiation outcomes. Given the extent and complexity of multi-issue business negotiations, profit optimizing by means of improving a company’s goal setting has a great deal of potential. However, developing goal setting strategies before the actual negotiation is still rather uncommon in business practice. In order to provide professionals with empirical guidance, this work aims at investigating three steps for the development and effective management of goal setting strategies for business negotiations. Therefore, this dissertation contains three papers, each one dealing with one specific step. The first paper explores the characterization of social and economic outcomes in different business relationship types at the beginning of the relationship and the development of these outcomes toward the actual status quo. The second paper takes the number of goals into account for goal setting strategies. This paper uses the two dimensions goal scope and goal difficulty to investigate the relevance and potentials of combining different level of these dimensions in multi-issue negotiations. Therefore, a large experiment was conducted measuring the impact on individual and joint negotiation outcomes, and the impasse rate. The third paper analyzes the type and orientation of negotiation goals. When the set of negotiation issues has an integrative potential, the opportunity to increase the joint gains arises. To what extent negotiators pursue the integrative potential depends largely on their goal orientation. A quantitative analysis with practitioners was used to examine the influence that business negotiations’ situative and organizational factors have on the negotiators’ goal orientation. The dissertation closes with implications for practice, limitations of the work, and ideas for future research.
The ability of a company to innovate and to launch innovation is a critical competitive edge to remain competitive in the 21st century. Large organizations therefore increasingly recognize employees as a significant factor and critical source of innovation. Several studies assert the fact that every employee has to offer certain skills and knowledge and can contribute to innovation. Hence, every employee has a certain ‘entrepreneurial potential’. This potential can be expressed in the form of entrepreneurial behaviour and can occur in many ways, from monopersonal innovation championing to several small scale contributions, where several individuals team up for innovation. To support entrepreneurial behaviour of their employees, large organizations increasingly rely on Corporate Entrepreneurship. They set up organizational structures and venturing units, offer vehicles and tools to their employees to be more entrepreneurial. The evolvement of new tools and technologies thereby allow for new ways of employee involvement, also allowing for more radical innovation to be developed collaboratively. Yet, many of such offerings fail to achieve the desired outcome. While some employees immediately opt-in for innovation, others do not and their entrepreneurial potential remains untapped. This research explores how large organizations can better support their employees to express their entrepreneurial potential, thus moving from non-entrepreneurial behaviour or not wanting to be involved, to actually expressing entrepreneurial behaviour. The underlying research therefore is two-fold. While focusing on the individual level and the entrepreneurial behaviour of employees, this research also takes the organizational perspective into account in order to identify how non-entrepreneurial behaviour can be stimulated towards entrepreneurial behaviour. Using an empirical qualitative research design based on pragmatism and abduction, data is collected by means of qualitative interviews as well as a longitudinal use case setting. Grounded theory is then applied for analysis and sense making. The main outcome is a theoretical model of why employees are expressing or not expressing their entrepreneurial potential and how non-expression can potentially be triggered towards entrepreneurial behaviour. The results indicate that there is no one-size-fits all model of Corporate Entrepreneurship. This research therefore argues that organizations can achieve higher levels of entrepreneurial behaviour when addressing employees differently. By developing a theoretical model as well as suggestions of how this model can be applied in practice, this research contributes to theory and practice alike. This document closes suggesting future research areas around supporting employees to express their entrepreneurial potential.
The business model has emerged as a construct to understand how firms drive innovation through emerging technologies. It is defined as the ‘architecture of the firm’s value creation, delivery and appropriation mechanisms’ (Foss & Saebi, 2018, p. 5). The architecture is characterized by complex functional interrelations between activities that are conducted by various actors, some within and some outside of the firm. In other words, a firm’s value architecture is embedded within a wider system of actors that all contribute to the output of the value architecture.
The question of what drives innovation within this system and how the firm can shape and navigate this innovation is an essential question within innova- tion management research. This dissertation is a compendium of four individual research articles that examine how the design of a firm’s value architecture can fa- cilitate system-wide innovation in the context of Artificial Intelligence and Block- chain Technology. The first article studies how firms use Blockchain Technology to design a governance infrastructure that enables innovation within a platform ecosystem. The findings propose a framework for blockchain-enabled platform ecosystems that address the essential problem of opening the platform to allow for innovation while also ensuring that all actors get to capture their share of the value. The second article analyzes how German Artificial Intelligence startups design their business models. It identifies three distinct types of startup with dif- ferent underlying business models. The third article aims to understand the role of a firm’s value architecture during the socio-technical transition process of Arti- ficial Intelligence. It identifies three distinct ways in which Artificial Intelligence startups create a shared understanding of the technology. The last article exam- ines how corporate venture capital units configure value-adding services for their venture portfolios. It derives a taxonomy of different corporate venture capital types, driven by different strategic motivations.
Ultimately, this dissertation provides novel empirical insights into how a firm’s value architecture determines it’s role within a wider system of actors and how that role enables the firm to facilitate innovation. In that way, it contributes to both business model and innovation management literature.
This thesis puts the citizen-state interaction at its center. Building on a comprehensive model incorporating various perspectives on this interaction, I derive selected research gaps. The three articles, comprising this thesis, tackle these gaps. A focal role plays the citizens’ administrative literacy, the relevant competences and knowledge necessary to successfully interact with public organizations. The first article elaborates on the different dimensions of administrative literacy and develops a survey instrument to assess these. The second study shows that public employees change their behavior according to the competences that citizens display during public encounters. They treat citizens preferentially that are well prepared and able to persuade them of their application’s potential. Thereby, they signal a higher success potential for bureaucratic success criteria which leads to the employees’ cream-skimming behavior. The third article examines the dynamics of employees’ communication strategies when recovering from a service failure. The study finds that different explanation strategies yield different effects on the client’s frustration. While accepting the responsibility and explaining the reasons for a failure alleviates the frustration and anger, refusing the responsibility leads to no or even reinforcing effects on the client’s frustration. The results emphasize the different dynamics that characterize the nature of citizen-state interactions and how they establish their short- and long-term outcomes.
Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit untersucht den Umgang mit Dilemmata von Topmanagern. Dilemmata sind ein alltägliches Geschäft im Topmanagement. Die entsprechenden Akteure sind daher immer wieder mit diesen konfrontiert und mit ihnen umzugehen, gehört gewissermaßen zu ihrer Berufsbeschreibung. Hinzu kommen Dilemmata im nicht direkt geschäftlichen Bereich, wie zum Beispiel jene zwischen Familien- und Arbeitszeit. Doch stellt dieses Feld ein kaum untersuchtes Forschungsgebiet dar. Während Dilemmata in anderen Bereichen eine zunehmende Aufmerksamkeit erfuhren, wurden deren Besonderheiten im Topmanagement genauso wenig differenziert betrachtet wie zugehörige Umgangsweisen. Theorie und Praxis stellen bezüglich Dilemmata von Topmanagern vor allem einen Gegensatz dar, beziehungsweise fehlt es an einer theoretischen Fundierung der Empirie. Diesem Umstand wird mittels dieser Studie begegnet. Auf der Grundlage einer differenzierten und breiten Erfassung von Theorien zu Dilemmata, so diese auch noch nicht auf Topmanager bezogen wurden, und einer empirischen Erhebung, die im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit stehen, soll das Feld Dilemmata von Topmanagern der Forschung geöffnet werden. Empirische Grundlage sind vor allem narrative Interviews mit Topmanagern über ihre Dilemmata-Wahrnehmung, ausgemachte Ursachen, Umgangsweisen und Resultate. Dies erlaubt es, Topmanagertypen sowie Dilemmata-Arten, mit denen sie konfrontiert sind oder waren, analytisch herauszuarbeiten. Angesichts der Praxisrelevanz von Dilemmata von Topmanagern wird jedoch nicht nur ein theoretisches Modell zu dieser Thematik erarbeitet, es werden auch Reflexionen auf die Praxis in Form von Handlungsempfehlungen vorgenommen. Schließlich gilt es, die allgemeine Theorie zu Dilemmata, ohne konkreten Bezug zu Topmanagern, mit den theoretischen Erkenntnissen dieser Studie auf empirischer Basis zu kontrastieren. Dabei wird im Rahmen der empirischen Erfassung und Auswertung dem Ansatz der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie gefolgt.
Although the search for promising business models (BMs) is crucial for every profit-oriented venture, searching for those challenges in particular entrepreneurs. Limited resources, missing expertise and absolute uncertainty call entrepreneurs to strongly rely on their cognition in searching for a promising BM. However, as prior studies have examined cognitive search activities in isolation and neglected cognitive differences, explanations of how cognitive factors affect the BM process and outcomes are thus far insufficient.
Addressing the overall question of how BMs emerge, the dissertation contributes to the cognitive perspective in entrepreneurship and BM research. Building on the dual-process theory from cognitive psychology, the micro-foundations of managerial decision-making and insights from framing literature, this dissertation explicitly investigates the impacts of different cognitive dispositions, search activities and visual framing effects. The core assumption is that cognitive dispositions and entrepreneurs’ searches for information determine their BM decision-making. Furthermore, BM visualisations have become popular instruments with which to explain and manage today’s complex business interactions. As they abstract from reality, they can also unfold impacts on the cognitive processes.
This dissertation offers new explanations to these aspects and consists of three studies and one reflective article. The first study explores the impacts of differences in search activities and cognitive dispositions in a qualitative study with 70 entrepreneurship students. The second qualitative study explores the cognitive impacts of 103 BM visualisations. Third, a quantitative PLS-SEM experiment with 197 entrepreneurs illuminates the link between BM visualisations and cognition. The reflective article expresses the results’ meaning for the teaching of BMs.
In sum, the studies have resulted in a new theory of stabilising factors explaining how cognitive dispositions, search activities and visual framing determine entrepreneurs’ decisions to imitate or deviate from existing BMs. It indicates that the decision depends on the context-dependent strategic orientation and cognitive disposition-dependent cognitive safety, that is the correspondence between characteristics of cognitive dispositions and search activities. Moreover, the studies identified five visual framing effects that are independent of cognitive dispositions and prior experiences. This provides fertile contributions to the literature on BM methods and how BM visualisations affect decisions. Most importantly, BM visualisations provide an emotionally stabilising function to rational entrepreneurs, a cognitively stabilising function to experiential participants and do not affect indifferent participants in general.

Die politische Professionalisierung hat innerhalb der institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen zur Sozialfigur des Berufspolitikers geführt. Diese Entwicklung wird im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit hergeleitet und im empirischen Teil mit umfangreichen Daten belegt. Bemerkenswert ist, dass es dabei nicht zu erheblichen Veränderungen in den Rekrutierungsmustern und Karriereverläufen der Abgeordneten gekommen ist. Vielmehr erweisen sich die von Dietrich Herzog herausgearbeiteten Karrieretypen auch heute noch als gültig und mussten nur moderat angepasst werden. Es zeigt sich damit eine erstaunliche Kontinuität in der politischen Elitenbildung. Die in Deutschland sehr gefestigten institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen, die den Zugang und die Attraktivität politischer Karrieren determinieren, haben offensichtlich auch zu einer Stabilisierung der Karrieretypen geführt.
A new model that links visionary leadership with team performance is
postulated. It is proposed that leader prototypicality will negatively
moderate the effect of visionary leadership on team goal monitoring and performance. This model underlines that teams will compensate for the less prototypicality of a visionary leader by engaging in more goal monitoring, which is a process that is conducive to team performance. A field study included 60 teams, 180 individuals, and 60 team leaders was conducted in Egypt. Parameters were collected on the individual level.
Aggregation measures (rwg, ICC1 & ICC2) were acceptable and the averages were calculated for each team. The proposed three-factor model exhibited a reasonable fit to the data, χ2(130) = 259.93, p-value0.01; CFI = 0.90; and RMSEA = 0.13). The hypothesized negative moderation effect of leader prototypicality on the relationship between visionary leadership and team goal monitoring was statistically significant (-0.16; s.e.= 0.06; t = -3.13; p <0.01; 95% CI: -0.31, -0.07). Results showed a significant index of moderated mediation (-0.07; s.e.= 0.05; 95% CI: -0.20, -0.01). As predicted, the indirect effect of visionary leadership on team performance mediated by team goal monitoring was more strongly positive when leader prototypicality was low (b = 0.27; s.e.= 0.16; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.68), rather than high (b = 0.13; s.e.= 0.10; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.45). A proposal for extending the dimensions of identity-based leadership is discussed. This dissertation makes four significant contributions to theory and research on leadership. First, the main contribution of this research lies in showing that visionary leadership is more strongly positively related to team performance when leader prototypicality is low, rather than high. Second, this dissertation provides a contribution toward overcoming the fragmentation in the leadership literature by desegregating the literature on visionary leadership and leader-team prototypicality. Third, team goal monitoring as a mechanism that explains the interactive effects of visionary leadership and leader prototypicality on team performance was identified. Fourth, this study tests the postulated research model in Egypt, a culture that has in the past received scant attention.
Alexander Rhode investigates performance-oriented measures of Contracting Authorities in public tenders conducted within the EU. He finds that Contracting Authorities can improve their performance and attract more suppliers by publishing (as precise as possible) starting prices in the beginning of a tender. First, he reports that compared with private-sector negotiations, starting prices do not create entry barriers in public procurement. Second, he finds that increased numerical precision of starting prices is linearly correlated with better performance and a higher number of bids. In public procurement, suppliers tend to attribute increased credibility to precise starting prices which reduces their (perceived) entry risks.
This dissertation consists of four self-contained papers that deal with the implications of financial market imperfections and heterogeneity. The analysis mainly relates to the class of incomplete-markets models but covers different research topics.
The first paper deals with the distributional effects of financial integration for developing countries. Based on a simple heterogeneous-agent approach, it is shown that capital owners experience large welfare losses while only workers moderately gain due to higher wages. The large welfare losses for capital owners contrast with the small average welfare gains from representative-agent economies and indicate that a strong opposition against capital market opening has to be expected.
The second paper considers the puzzling observation of capital flows from poor to rich countries and the accompanying changes in domestic economic development. Motivated by the mixed results from the literature, we employ an incomplete-markets model with different types of idiosyncratic risk and borrowing constraints. Based on different scenarios, we analyze under what conditions the presence of financial market imperfections contributes to explain the empirical findings and how the conditions may change with different model assumptions.
The third paper deals with the interplay of incomplete information and financial market imperfections in an incomplete-markets economy. In particular, it analyzes the impact of incomplete information about idiosyncratic income shocks on aggregate saving. The results show that the effect of incomplete information is not only quantitatively substantial but also qualitatively ambiguous and varies with the influence of the income risk and the borrowing constraint.
Finally, the fourth paper analyzes the influence of different types of fiscal rules on the response of key macroeconomic variables to a government spending shock. We find that a strong temporary increase in public debt contributes to stabilizing consumption and leisure in the first periods following the change in government spending, whereas a non-debt-intensive fiscal rule leads to a faster recovery of consumption, leisure, capital and output in later periods. Regarding optimal debt policy, we find that a debt-intensive fiscal rule leads to the largest aggregate welfare benefit and that the individual welfare gain is particularly high for wealth-poor agents.

There are numerous situations in which people ask for something or make a request, e.g. asking a favor, asking for help or requesting compliance with specific norms. For this reason, how to ask for something in order to increase people’s willingness to fulfill such requests is one of the most important question for many people working in various different fields of responsibility such as charitable giving, marketing, management or policy making.
This dissertation consists of four chapters that deal with the effects of small changes in the decision-making environment on altruistic decision-making and compliance behavior. Most notably, written communication as an influencing factor is the focus of the first three chapters. The starting point was the question how to devise a request in order to maximize its chance of success (Chapter 1). The results of the first chapter originate the ideas for the second and third chapter. Chapter 2 analyzes how communication by a neutral third-party, i.e. a text from the experimenters that either reminds potential benefactors of their responsibility or highlights their freedom of choice, affects altruistic decision-making. Chapter 3 elaborates on the effect of thanking people in advance when asking them for help. While being not as closely related to the other chapters as the three first ones are, the fourth chapter deals as well with the question how compliance (here: compliance with norms and rules) is affected by subtle manipulations of the environment in which decisions are made. This chapter analyzes the effect of default settings in a tax return on tax compliance.
In order to study the research questions outlined above, controlled experiments were conducted. Chapter 1, which analyzes the effect of text messages on the decision to give something to another person, employs a mini-dictator game. The recipient sends a free-form text message to the dictator before the latter makes a binary decision whether or not to give part of her or his endowment to the recipient. We find that putting effort into the message by writing a long note without spelling mistakes increases dictators’ willingness to give. Moreover, writing in a humorous way and mentioning reasons why the money is needed pays off. Furthermore, men and women seem to react differently to some message categories. Only men react positively to efficiency arguments, while only women react to messages that emphasize the dictator’s power and responsibility.
Building on this last result, Chapter 2 attempts to disentangle the effect of reminding potential benefactors of their responsibility for the potential beneficiary and the effect of highlighting their decision power and freedom of choice on altruistic decision-making by studying the effects of two different texts on giving in a dictator game. We find that only men react positively to a text that stresses their responsibility for the recipient by giving more to her or him, whereas only women seem to react positively to a text that emphasizes their decision power and freedom of choice.
Chapter 3 focuses on the compliance with a request. In the experiment, participants are asked to provide a detailed answer to an open question. Compliance is measured by the effort participants spend on answering the question. The treatment variable is whether or not they see the text “thanks in advance.” We find that participants react negatively by putting less effort into complying with the request in response to the phrase “thanks in advance.”
Chapter 4 studies the effect of prefilled tax returns with mostly inaccurate default values on tax compliance. In a laboratory experiment, participants earn income by performing a real-effort task and must subsequently file a tax return for three consecutive rounds. In the main treatment, the tax return is prefilled with a default value, resulting from participants’ own performance in previous rounds, which varies in its relative size. The results suggest that there is no lasting effect of a default value on tax honesty, neither for relatively low nor relatively high defaults. However, participants who face a default that is lower than their true income in the first round evade significantly and substantially more taxes in this round than participants in the control treatment without a default.
The present dissertation investigates profit-maximizing behavior in different phases of the negotiation process. Over the last decades, research dealt in detail with behavior of negotiation actors with the aim of identifying performance enhancing factors. The majority of those studies focused on behavior within the main negotiation phase. This work, however, considers phases which are, so far, underrepresented in research but show an impact on the negotiation process and outcome. Those phases are the pre-negotiation, the first offer, and the main negotiation phase which is further divided by breaks into several rounds. Within these phases, traits of behavior are analyzed that can be used strategically in order to impact the negotiation outcome. The dissertation contains three papers, each one dealing with a specific strategy within one phase. The first paper investigates communication behavior in the pre-negotiation phase. Content analysis of a negotiation experiment shows that the employment of positive communication elements such as the generation of enthusiasm for an upcoming project results in an increase of agreements on entering a negotiation and also leads to a higher willingness to make concessions. The second paper explores the impact of a semantic first anchor, which does not contain a specific number but only gives a numerical direction, on the opponent’s concession behavior and the final outcome. By means of two scenario-based questionnaires and a negotiation experiment it is demonstrated that semantic offers reveal an anchoring effect and lead to better negotiation outcomes. The third paper deals with the introduction of breaks and their effect on the following negotiation process. Therefore, content and outcome of another negotiation experiment are investigated. The analysis shows that breaks evoke a dominant impression but can negatively impact the atmosphere and thereby also the outcome. Finally, the gathered insights are brought together and discussed. The dissertation closes with implications for practice, limitations of the work, and ideas for future research.
To reach its climate targets, the European Union has to implement a major sustainability transition in the coming decades. While the socio-technical change required for this transition is well discussed in the academic literature, the economics that go along with it are often reduced to a cost-benefit perspective of climate policy measures. By investigating climate change mitigation as a coordination problem, this thesis offers a novel perspective: It integrates the economic and the socio-technical dimension and thus allows to better understand the opportunities of a sustainability transition in Europe.
First, a game theoretic framework is developed to illustrate coordination on green or brown investment from an agent perspective. A model based on the coordination game "stag hunt" is used to discuss the influence of narratives and signals for green investment as a means to coordinate expectations towards green growth. Public and private green investment impulses – triggered by credible climate policy measures and targets – serve as an example for a green growth perspective for Europe in line with a sustainability transition. This perspective also embodies a critical view on classical analyses of climate policy measures.
Secondly, this analysis is enriched with empirical results derived from stakeholder involvement. In interviews and with a survey among European insurance companies, coordination mechanisms such as market and policy signals are identified and evaluated by their impact on investment strategies for green infrastructure. The latter, here defined as renewable energy, electricity distribution and transmission as well as energy efficiency improvements, is considered a central element of the transition to a low-carbon society.
Thirdly, this thesis identifies and analyzes major criticisms raised towards stakeholder involvement in sustainability science. On a conceptual level, different ways of conducting such qualitative research are classified. This conceptualization is then evaluated by scientists, thereby generating empirical evidence on ideals and practices of stakeholder involvement in sustainability science.
Through the combination of theoretical and empirical research on coordination problems, this thesis offers several contributions: On the one hand, it outlines an approach that allows to assess the economic opportunities of sustainability transitions. This is helpful for policy makers in Europe that are striving to implement climate policy measures addressing the targets of the Paris Agreement as well as to encourage a shift of investments towards green infrastructure. On the other hand, this thesis enhances the stabilization of the theoretical foundations in sustainability science. Therefore, it can aid researchers who involve stakeholders when studying sustainability transitions.
Over the past decade, society has witnessed an increasing expansion of service economies as manufacturing (i.e., product-oriented) companies break free from their product-based business model and move toward more service-oriented value creation as a result of several economic, technological, and social changes. As they shift from products to (service) solutions, manufacturing companies pursue new strategic direction, inter alia, by extensively employing service business development activities.
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the considerable (re-)emerging stream of service business development by providing vital insights for academia and management into important focus areas that have hardly, if at all, been (empirically) investigated in the existing literature before. Therefore, these findings can be vital to informing a differentiation in current and future marketing strategies in business practice.
First of all, this dissertation focuses on the extent to which service business development is transposed into business practice. Because scarce empirical-quantitative research has studied the current state of service business development across various industry and market sectors, this study analyzes a unique, manually collected dataset of 266 (product and service) business development activities. In so doing, this investigation contributes to literature by presenting a comprehensive, industry-wide status quo and trend report of service business development in practice.
Furthermore, given the surprisingly limited scientific attention paid to the question of how service business development is strategically configured and further applied to different environmental circumstances, this dissertation provides comprehensive theoretical and practical implications by analyzing in detail a sample of 137 service business developments of 66 product-oriented companies.
Lastly, manufacturers are recognizing that service-oriented value creation is moving toward a more collaborative process of co-creation as a promising measure to achieve competitive advantage, and even more as an appropriate response to complex business environments. Thus, an increasing number of companies around the world have recently introduced business models related to access-based services such as car-, scooter-, and bike-sharing systems. But despite the considerable advantages of access-based services as an alternative to ownership, these companies are now seeing that consumer adoption and (re-)usage rates remain insufficient. Owing to the lack of general and cross-national scientific knowledge, the purpose of this dissertation continues to explore which factors impede diffusion of related service business development activities from a consumer perspective and what kind of differences can be established between countries. Consequently, with a total of 1,443 participants, a cross-national survey was carried out in three countries, i.e., the United States, Germany, and China, to measure a vast number of different adoption barriers derived from a developed integrated framework that combines established theories within innovation and adoption behavior research.

Is global governance characterized by overlap and fragmentation, or by coordination and harmonization? There are two rather different narratives about the worlds in which international organizations (IOs) live. One way or another, IOs are part of a broader environment and engage in relations with other actors in it. Rather than being detached from their environment, IOs are shaped by and respond to developments taking place within it (e.g., overlap). Thus, the general research interest of this dissertation lies in organizational responses to such environmental developments. Therein, the emphasis is placed on IO positionality, meaning the position of an IO within a “web” of interorganizational relations, or, more precisely, an IO’s position within an organizational field as a specification of the IO environment.
Against this background, the dissertation poses the following research question: How does an IO’s position within an organizational field shape its responses to developments of the field? In that, three subquestions are advanced: Which position does an IO occupy within the organizational field? How does an IO perceive the organizational field? How does an IO respond to developments and features of the field? Theoretically, the dissertation combines an open system perspective on IOs with two variants of field theory inspired by Bourdieu and by DiMaggio and Powell. Building on the central concept of the organizational field, the dissertation understands IOs as actors with agency. Empirically, the dissertation consists of a qualitative, comparative study and analyzes two IOs located within the organizational field of global food security governance. I select IOs that occupy different positions within the field of food security governance, namely an IO at the core of the field (the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO) and an IO at the periphery of the field (the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO). I compare and analyze their respective perceptions of the field of food security governance, including their own role and their understandings of food security, and their responses over time. To investigate these IOs’ perceptions and responses over time, the method of choice consists of a qualitative content analysis of a wide range of organizational documents (e.g., governing bodies’ reports).
The main argument this dissertation advances is as follows: The position that an IO occupies within an organizational field influences how the organization perceives its environment—in particular, features of and developments within this environment. Against this background, the main findings of this dissertation are as follows: Overall, FAO and UNIDO both perceive proliferation, overlap, and duplication as relevant developments of the organizational field of global food security governance over time. While both IOs see developments in the field of food security governance (e.g., overlap and duplication) as problematic given their detrimental effects for food security governance, FAO and UNIDO differ in decisive regards. Whereas FAO holds a narrative that other actors were responsible for this state of affairs, and thus responsible for reducing or even eliminating overlap and duplication, UNIDO perceives these developments differently. UNIDO acknowledges its own role in the development of overlap and duplication, and therefore also sees a role for itself in addressing these developments. The two IOs thus differ in what they understand to be the causes and historical priors of field-specific developments. Furthermore, while both FAO and UNIDO attempt to demonstrate that they are constructive players within the UN development system, the two IOs differ in their responses: While FAO engages in balancing by voicing its commitment to UN processes and to coordination, yet early on making different reservations, UNIDO, in contrast, engages in UN processes without similar reservations. Accordingly, the two IOs also differ on the responses they employ to field-level harmonization demands.
The dissertation makes several contributions. Theoretically, I contribute an innovative argument on the influence of perceptions for organizational responses to developments in the IOs’ environment. This argument may help us to better understand how IOs as actors embedded within an organizational field deal with changes evolving within these fields. Empirically, I scrutinize developments in food security governance, such as proliferation and overlap, through the eyes of IOs in the field. While proliferation, overlap, and duplication are often referred to in academic debates on food security governance, we do not yet actually understand these phenomena very well. To this, I contribute a study that analyzes IO perceptions of these developments in the field, thus resulting in a more in-depth and nuanced picture of how IOs perceive these developments as a central type of actor in food security governance. Next, to this emphasis on the IO perspective, I also inductively develop a spectrum of IO responses to field developments, ranging from expanding scope to defending turf. Finally, I also make a methodological-conceptual contribution: While concepts such as “position” are well-known, they are sometimes drawn on without developing a clear foundation of how to assess different positions. I thus add an approach for bringing this concept of position to life by developing a range of criteria that can be used to approximate an IO’s position within an organizational field, depending on different types of capital.
Climate change affects societies across the globe in various ways. In addition to gradual changes in temperature and other climatic variables, global warming is likely to increase intensity and frequency of extreme weather events.
Beyond biophysical impacts, these also directly affect societal and economic activity. Additionally, indirect effects can occur; spatially, economic losses can spread along global supply-chains; temporally, climate impacts can change the economic development trajectory of countries.
This thesis first examines how climate change alters river flood risk and its local socio-economic implications. Then, it studies the global economic response to river floods in particular, and to climate change in general.
Changes in high-end river flood risk are calculated for the next three decades on a global scale with high spatial resolution. In order to account for uncertainties, this assessment makes use of an ensemble of climate and hydrological models as well as a river routing model, that is found to perform well regarding peak river discharge. The results show an increase in high-end flood risk in many parts of the world, which require profound adaptation efforts. This pressure to adapt is measured as the enhancement in protection level necessary to stay at historical high-end risk. In developing countries as well as in industrialized regions, a high pressure to adapt is observed - the former to increase low protection levels, the latter to maintain the low risk levels perceived in the past.
Further in this thesis, the global agent-based dynamic supply-chain model acclimate is developed. It models the cascading of indirect losses in the global supply network. As an anomaly model its agents - firms and consumers - maximize their profit locally to respond optimally to local perturbations. Incorporating quantities as well as prices on a daily basis, it is suitable to dynamically resolve the impacts of unanticipated climate extremes.
The model is further complemented by a static measure, which captures the inter-dependencies between sectors across regions that are only connected indirectly. These higher-order dependencies are shown to be important for a comprehensive assessment of loss-propagation and overall costs of local disasters.
In order to study the economic response to river floods, the acclimate model is driven by flood simulations. Within the next two decades, the increase in direct losses can only partially be compensated by market adjustments, and total losses are projected to increase by 17% without further adaptation efforts. The US and the EU are both shown to receive indirect losses from China, which is strongly affected directly. However, recent trends in the trade relations leave the EU in a better position to compensate for these losses.
Finally, this thesis takes a broader perspective when determining the investment response to the climate change damages employing the integrated assessment model DICE. On an optimal economic development path, the increase in damages is anticipated as emissions and consequently temperatures increase. This leads to a significant devaluation of investment returns and the income losses from climate damages almost double.
Overall, the results highlight the need to adapt to extreme weather events - local physical adaptation measures have to be combined with regional and global policy measures to prepare the global supply-chain network to climate change.
Valide generierte Daten aus Verhandlungen bilden die Grundlage zum Ergründen von Art und Umfang verschiedener Einflussfaktoren auf den Verhandlungsprozess und das Verhandlungsergebnis. Die Wahl einer bestimmten Datenerhebungsmethode wird weitestgehend von der jeweiligen Problemstellung einer Untersuchung bedingt. Aus diesem Zusammenhang erschließt sich die Notwendigkeit, fundierte Erkenntnisse und Empfehlungen für die Anwendung von bestimmten Datenerhebungsmethoden in der Verhandlungsforschung zu entwickeln. Damit einhergehend können sowohl Verbesserungspotenziale für die methodische Vorgehensweise zukünftiger Forschungsvorhaben aufgefunden als auch – basierend auf den generierten Daten – gehaltvolle Handlungsempfehlungen für die Verhandlungspraxis ausgesprochen werden. Zunächst nimmt der Verfasser eine umfangreiche Literaturanalyse über die methodischen Praktiken der Datengewinnung in verhandlungsrelevanten Studien im Zeitraum 2005 bis 2014 vor. Basierend auf einer ergänzend durchgeführten Befragung unter Verhandlungswissenschaftlern liefert er eine Prognose der zukünftigen Anwendungshäufigkeiten der Erhebungsmethoden und leitet methodische Erkenntnisse im Zeitverlauf ab. Insbesondere durch die Analyse der Passung zwischen Untersuchungsfragestellung und Datenerhebungsmethode sowie weiterer Aspekte (z. B. Art der Verhandlung, Forschungsdisziplin, Journal der Publikation, Korrespondenzautor und dessen Affiliation), welche die jeweilige Untersuchung beeinflussen könnten, schafft der Autor eine kontemporäre Entscheidungshilfe für kommende verhandlungsbezogene Forschungsaktivitäten.
Die deutsche Berufsausbildung hat in den vergangenen Jahren stark an Zuspruch verloren. Dies trifft insbesondere auch auf die duale kaufmännische Berufsausbildung zu. Galt sie vor einigen Jahren noch als ein möglicher Ausbildungsweg für leistungsstarke Schüler/-innen, präferieren diese heute zum großen Teil das Studium. Die wachsende Anzahl an Studienabbrechern belegt jedoch, dass dadurch auch Potenzial verloren geht, weil sich Jugendliche mit dem Studium für einen Ausbildungsweg entscheiden, der für sie nicht geeignet ist. Bisherige Bemühungen zur Etablierung alternativer Bildungswege wie zum Beispiel Berufsakademien weisen zwar Erfolge auf, basieren jedoch auf einem Konzept, das sich ausschließlich am Bedarf der Wirtschaft orientiert. Es ist jedoch die Überzeugung der Autorin, dass neue innovative Bildungswege auch die Bedürfnisse und Vorstellungen derjenigen berücksichtigen müssen, für die sie entworfen werden. Denn die Generation der heutigen Jugendlichen zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie ein anderes Wertekonzept als ihre Vorgängergenerationen aufweist. Die Dissertation entwickelt daher ein Modell einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung, welches sich aus unterschiedlichen motivationstheoretischen Elementen ableitet und zugleich die Werte der Generation der heutigen Jugend-lichen berücksichtigt. Es umfasst sowohl die Anreiz-Beitrags-Theorie nach Barnard als auch die Inhalts-Erwartungstheorie nach Vroom. Zudem liegt ein Hauptaugenmerk dieser Arbeit auf der Anpassung der Zwei-Faktoren-Theorie nach Herzberg auf die heutige Zeit.
Empirisch basiert die Dissertation auf einem dreistufigen Untersuchungsdesign. Die erste Stufe umfasst eine quantitative Befragung von insgesamt 459 Abiturienten/-innen und 100 Studierenden. In der zweiten Stufe wurden 10 Studieren-de und 12 Abiturienten/-innen qualitativ befragt. Eine Validierung der Ergebnis-se erfolgte in der dritten Stufe mittels Experteninterviews. Das Ziel der empirischen Untersuchung bestand in der Überprüfung von vier Hypothesen als Basis zur Modellableitung:
Hypothese H1 - Flexibilität erhöht die Attraktivität einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung: Der Faktor Flexibilität wurde als ein relevanter Motivator für die Wahl eines Ausbildungsweges identifiziert. Jugendliche wollen sich heutzutage nicht sofort bzw. nicht zu früh festlegen müssen.
Hypothese H2 - Auslandsaufenthalte erhöhen die Attraktivität einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung: Es wurde bestätigt, dass Auslandsaufenthalte die Attraktivität einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung steigert, es besteht jedoch eine Reihe von Barrieren, die Jugendliche (obwohl sie den grundsätzlichen Vor-teil sehen) davon abhalten, einen Auslandsaufenthalt für sich selbst in Betracht zu ziehen.
Hypothese H3 - Das Aufzeigen einer Karriereperspektive erhöht die Attraktivität einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung: Für die Generation der heutigen Jugendlichen steht bezüglich der Wahl ihres Ausbildungsweges die Aussicht auf eine Tätigkeit im Vordergrund, die ein gesichertes Einkommen und somit ein gutes Leben ermöglicht und zudem aus ihrer Sicht eine gewisse Sinnhaftigkeit hat. Führungspositionen, in denen auch höhere Verantwortung übernommen wird, strebt nur eine Minderheit an.
Hypothese H4 - Zusätzliche monetäre Anreize erhöhen die Attraktivität einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung: Vergütungsbestandteile werden grundsätzlich nicht abgelehnt (das wäre auch irrational), haben jedoch auch nicht die Anreizfunktion, die ihr auf Basis der Voruntersuchung im Rahmen dieser Arbeit hätte unterstellt werden können. Für die Entscheidungsfindung bezüglich eines Ausbildungsweges spielen sie nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. Dennoch trägt die Vergütung zur Attraktivität eines Ausbildungsweges bei.
Basierend auf den zuvor genannten Ergebnissen wurde das Modell einer wirtschaftsorientieren Ausbildung abgeleitet, das sowohl horizontal als auch vertikal flexibel ist. Horizontale Flexibilität ist dadurch gegeben, dass innerhalb eines Ausbildungsjahres unterschiedliche Unternehmen und Branchen kennengelernt werden (Jahr 1 und Jahr 2). Eine Spezialisierung erfolgt erst in den späteren Ausbildungsjahren. Durch die Möglichkeit, nach jedem Ausbildungsjahr mit einem Abschluss ins Berufsleben zu wechseln und die Ausbildung gegebenenfalls zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt fortzusetzen, ist auch eine vertikale Flexibilität gegeben. Zudem bietet das Modell Studienabbrechern/-innen die Möglichkeit, im Ausbildungsjahr 2 bzw. 3 in die Ausbildung einzusteigen. Im Jahr 2 und/oder Jahr 3 sind Auslandsaufenthalte integriert. Diese werden fakultativ an-geboten. Bereits ab dem Jahr 1 besteht die Möglichkeit, Vorbereitungskurse zu belegen. Der hohen Bedeutung der Karriereperspektive wird im abgeleiteten Modell auf mehreren Ebenen Rechnung getragen. So werden nach jedem Ausbildungsjahr anerkannte Abschlüsse erreicht. Während diese in den Jahren 1 und 2 mit IHK-Abschlüssen gleichzusetzen sind, beginnen ab Jahr 3 die akademischen Graduierungen (Jahr 3 Bachelor, Jahr 4 Master). Die Vergütung wird Bestandteil einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung, wobei ihre Höhe mit Dauer der Ausbildung zunimmt.
Da mit der Einführung des Modells einer wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung die Überwindung von institutionellen Paradigmen und Schranken verbunden sind, erfolgte im Rahmen des Ausblicks der Arbeit eine weitere Expertenbefragung bezüglich seiner Umsetzbarkeit. Es setzt eine Beweglichkeit von institutioneller Seite voraus (hierbei insbesondere auch von den Kammern), die von der Mehr-zahl der Experten derzeit skeptisch gesehen wird. Die konzeptionelle Ausgestaltung findet grundsätzlichen Zuspruch, wobei in einigen Details, zum Beispiel in der Dauer der Ausbildung, noch Klärungsbedarf besteht.
Grundsätzlich schließen sich die Experten/-innen der Meinung der Autorin an, dass ein Sinneswandel in der deutschen Ausbildungslandschaft gewünscht und gefordert wird. Dies betrifft insbesondere auch den kaufmännischen Bereich. Diese Arbeit liefert mit dem Modell der wirtschaftsorientierten Ausbildung einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Diskussion über neue Ausbildungswege.
Mit der New Economic Geography (NEG) kann die Verteilung von Unternehmen und Arbeitskräften auf Regionen modellhaft diskutiert werden. In diesem Beitrag wird untersucht, welche räumlichen Verteilungen der mobilen Arbeitskräfte und Unternehmen in einem NEG-Modellansatz resultieren, wenn die Größe einer Region und damit der ihr zur Verfügung stehende Boden, die zu überwindende Distanz für den Gütertransport innerhalb der Regionen, sowie Bodennutzungskonkurrenzen zwischen Wohnen, Industrie und Landwirtschaft berücksichtigt werden. Auch wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Wohlfahrtswirkungen hierbei resultieren.
This dissertation consists of five self-contained essays, addressing different aspects of career choices, especially the choice of entrepreneurship, under risk and ambiguity. In Chapter 2, the first essay develops an occupational choice model with boundedly rational agents, who lack information, receive noisy feedback, and are restricted in their decisions by their personality, to analyze and explain puzzling empirical evidence on entrepreneurial decision processes. In the second essay, in Chapter 3, I contribute to the literature on entrepreneurial choice by constructing a general career choice model on the basis of the assumption that outcomes are partially ambiguous. The third essay, in Chapter 4, theoretically and empirically analyzes the impact of media on career choices, where information on entrepreneurship provided by the media is treated as an informational shock affecting prior beliefs. The fourth essay, presented in Chapter 5, contains an empirical analysis of the effects of cyclical macro variables (GDP and unemployment) on innovative start-ups in Germany. In the fifth, and last, essay in Chapter 6, we examine whether information on personality is useful for advice, using the example of career advice.
Three Essays on EFRAG

This cumulative doctoral thesis consists of three papers that deal with the role of one specific European accounting player in the international accounting standard-setting, namely the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG). The first paper examines whether and how EFRAG generally fulfills its role in articulating Europe’s interests toward the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). The qualitative data from the conducted interviews reveal that EFRAG influences the IASB’s decision making at a very early stage, long before other constituents are officially asked to comment on the IASB’s proposals. The second paper uses quantitative data and investigates the formal participation behavior of European constituents that seek to determine EFRAG’s voice. More precisely, this paper analyzes the nature of the constituents’ participation in EFRAG’s due process in terms of representation (constituent groups and geographical distribution) and the drivers of their participation behavior. EFRAG’s official decision making process is dominated by some specific constituent groups (such as preparers and the accounting profession) and by constituents from some specific countries (e.g. those with effective enforcement regimes). The third paper investigates in a first step who of the European constituents choose which lobbying channel (participation only at IASB, only at EFRAG, or at both institutions) and unveils in a second step possible reasons for their lobbying choices. The paper comprises quantitative and qualitative data. It reveals that English skills, time issues, the size of the constituent, and the country of origin are factors that can explain why the majority participates only in the IASB’s due process.
Wandlungsfähigkeit beschreibt die Fähigkeit eines Systems, proaktiv oder reaktiv Maßnahmen für die Modifikation seiner Eigenschaften schnell und effizient zu entwickeln, umzusetzen und anzuwenden sowie sich proaktiv darauf vorzubereiten, inaktiv zu sein und passiv Einwirkungen aus der Umwelt zu tolerieren. Die Eigenschaften wandlungsfähiger Systeme werden häufig als Indikatoren (z.B. Modularität, Wissen) verwendet. Dabei existiert eine Vielzahl potenzieller Indikatoren, deren jeweilige Relevanz jedoch ungeklärt ist. Hier setzt die Zielstellung der vorliegenden Arbeit an. Das Erkenntnisziel ist die Erklärung der Wandlungsfähigkeit sozio-technischer Systeme. Zu diesem Zweck wird ein Erklärungsmodell der indikatorbasierten Wandlungsfähigkeit erstellt, das zum Nachweis von Wandlungsfähigkeit, zur Bewertung dieser sowie zur Systemanalyse genutzt werden kann. Weiterhin wird exemplarisch eine positive Korrelation von Wandlungsfähigkeit und Schnelligkeit sowie Effizienz bei Veränderungsprojekten nachgewiesen.
Modern welfare states aim at designing unemployment insurance (UI) schemes which minimize the length of unemployment spells. A variety of institutions and incentives, which are embedded in UI schemes across OECD countries, reflect this attempt. For instance, job seekers entering UI are often provided with personal support through a caseworker. They also face the requirement to regularly submit a minimum number of job applications, which is typically enforced through benefit cuts in the case of non-compliance. Moreover, job seekers may systematically receive information on their re-employment prospects. As a consequence, UI design has become a complex task. Policy makers need to define not only the amount and duration of benefit payments, but also several other choice parameters. These include the intensity and quality of personal support through caseworkers, the level of job search requirements, the strictness of enforcement, and the information provided to unemployed individuals. Causal estimates on how these parameters affect re-employment outcomes are thus central inputs to the design of modern UI systems: how much do individual caseworkers influence the transition out of unemployment? Does the requirement of an additional job application translate into increased job finding? Do individuals behave differently when facing a strict versus mild enforcement system? And how does information on re-employment prospects influence the job search decision? This dissertation proposes four novel research designs to answer this question. Chapters one to three elaborate quasi-experimental identification strategies, which are applied to large-scale administrative data from Switzerland. They, respectively, measure how personal interactions with caseworkers (chapter one), the level of job search requirements (chapter two) and the strictness of enforcement (chapter three) affect re-employment outcomes. Chapter four proposes a structural estimation approach, based on linked survey and administrative data from Germany. It studies how over-optimism on future wage offers affects the decision to search for work, and how the provision of information changes this decision.
Die Kernfrage der vorliegenden Arbeit lautet: Sichert die Schuldenbremse die fiskalische Nachhaltigkeit in Deutschland? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage wird zunächst untersucht, welche Vor-Wirkungen die Einführung der Schuldenbremse im Zeitraum 2010-16 auf die deutschen Bundesländer zeitigte. Dafür wurden die beobachtete Konsolidierungsleistung und der 2009 bestehende Konsolidierungsanreiz bzw. –druck der Bundesländer mit Hilfe einer eigens zu diesem Zweck entwickelten Scorecard evaluiert. Mittels multipler Regressionsanalyse wurde dann analysiert, wie die Faktoren der Scorecard die Konsolidierungsleistung der Bun- desländer beeinflussen. Dabei wurde festgestellt, dass beinahe 90% der Variation, durch die unabhängigen Variablen Haushaltslage, Schuldenlast, Einnahmenwachstum und Pensionslast erklärt werden und der Schuldenbremse bei der Konsolidierungsepisode 2009-2016 eher eine untergeordnete Rolle zugefallen sein dürfte. Anschließend wurde mithilfe der in 65 Expertinneninterviews gesammelten Daten analysiert, welche Grenzen der neuen Fiskalregel in ihrem Wirken gesetzt sind, bzw. welche Risiken zukünftig die Einhaltung der Schuldenbremse erschweren oder verhindern könnten: Kommunalverschuldung, FEUs, Eventualverpflichtungen in Form von Bürgschaften für Finanzinstitute und Pensionsverpflichtungen. Die häufig geäußerten Kritikpunkte, die Schuldenbremse sei eine Konjunktur- und Investitionsbremse werden ebenfalls überprüft und zurückgewiesen. Schließlich werden potentielle zukünftige Entwicklungen hinsichtlich der Schuldenbremse und der öffentlichen Verwaltung in Deutschland sowie der Konsolidierungsbemühungen der Länder erörtert.

Purpose – This thesis set out to explore, describe, and evaluate the reality behind the rhetoric of freedom and control in the context of creativity. The overarching subject is concerned with the relationship between creativity, freedom, and control, considering freedom is also seen as an element of control to manage creativity.
Design/methodology/approach – In-depth qualitative data gathered from at two innovative start-ups. Two ethnographic studies were conducted. The data are based on participatory observations, interviews, and secondary sources, each of which included a three months field study and a total of 41 interviews from both organizations.
Findings – The thesis provides explanations for the practice of freedom and the control of creativity within organizations and expands the existing theory of neo-normative control. The findings indicate that organizations use complex control systems that allow a high degree of freedom that paradoxically leads to more control. Freedom is a cover of control, which in turn leads to creativity. Covert control even results in the responsibility to be creative outside working hours.
Practical implications – Organizations, which rely on creativity might use the results of this thesis. Positive workplace control of creativity provides both freedom and structure for creative work. While freedom leads to organizational members being more motivated and committing themselves more strongly to their and the organization’s goals, and a specific structure also helps to provide the requirements for creativity.
Originality/value – The thesis provides an insight into an approach to workplace control, which has mostly neglected in creativity research and proposes a modified concept of neo-normative control. It serves to provide a further understanding of freedom for creativity and to challenge the liberal claims of new control forms.
Das Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines heuristischen Bezugsrahmens zur Erklärung der Komplexität im Kontext von Industrie 4.0 und der demografischen Entwicklung aus strukturationstheoretischer Sicht. Dabei sind in Bezug auf die zukünftig zu erwartenden kognitiven Anforderungen an die Beschäftigten die Fragen essentiell, vor welchen Herausforderungen Unternehmen bezüglich der Einstellung und dem Verhalten sowie dem Erfahrungswissen der Beschäftigten stehen und welche Lösungsansätze sich im Umgang mit den Herausforderungen in der Praxis bisher als hilfreich erweisen.
In Kapitel 1 erfolgt zunächst die Beschreibung der Ausgangslage. Es werden die Begriffe Industrie 4.0 und demografische Entwicklung inhaltlich diskutiert und in einen theoretischen Zusammenhang gebracht.
In Kapitel 2 erfolgt die theoretische Fundierung der Arbeit. Dabei wird eine strukturationstheoretische Sicht auf Unternehmen als soziotechnische Systeme eingenommen. Durch diese „nicht deterministische“ Sichtweise wird ein prozessualer Blick auf den Wandlungsprozess in Unternehmen geschaffen, der es möglich macht, die Beschäftigten als aktiv handelnde Akteure im Sinne von „organisieren“ zur Erklärung möglicher Zusammenhänge zwischen Industrie 4.0 und der demografischen Entwicklung mit einzubeziehen. Der soziotechnische Systemansatz und die Strukturationstheorie bilden in diesem Sinne den „Kern“ des zu entwickelnden heuristischen Bezugsrahmens.
Die inhaltliche Gestaltung des theoriebasierten heuristischen Bezugsrahmens erfolgt in Kapitel 3 und Kapitel 4.
Kapitel 3 beschreibt ausgewählte Aspekte zukünftiger Anforderungen an die Arbeit, die durch eine systematische Aufbereitung des derzeitigen Forschungsstandes zu Industrie 4.0 ermittelt wurden. Sie bilden die „Gestaltungsgrenzen“, innerhalb derer sich je nach betrieblicher Situation unterschiedliche neue oder geänderte Anforderungen an die Beschäftigten bei der Gestaltung von Industrie 4.0 ableiten lassen.
In Kapitel 4 werden ausgewählte Aspekte menschlichen Handelns am Beispiel älterer Beschäftigter in Form zweier Schwerpunkte beschrieben.
Der erste Schwerpunkt betrifft mögliche Einflussfaktoren auf die Einstellung und das Verhalten älterer Beschäftigter im Wandlungsprozess aufgrund eines vorherrschenden Altersbildes im Unternehmen. Grundlage hierzu bildete die Stigmatisierungstheorie als interaktionistischer Ansatz der Sozialtheorie.
Mit dem zweiten Schwerpunkt, den ausgewählten handlungstheoretischen Aspekten der Alternsforschung aus der Entwicklungspsychologie, wird eine Lebensspannenperspektive eingenommen. Inhaltlich werden die komplexitätsinduzierten Faktoren, die sich aus handlungstheoretischer Perspektive mit der Adaptation von älteren Beschäftigten an veränderte äußere und persönliche Lebensbedingungen beschäftigen, systematisiert.
Anschließend wird auf Grundlage der bisherigen theoretischen Vorüberlegungen ein erster theoriebasierter Bezugsrahmen abgeleitet.
Kapitel 5 und Kapitel 6 beschreiben den empirischen Teil, die Durchführung teilstrukturierter Interviews, der Arbeit. Ziel der empirischen Untersuchung war es, neben der theoretischen Fundierung den theoriebasierten heuristischen Bezugsrahmen um Praxiserfahrungen zu konkretisieren und gegebenenfalls zu ergänzen. Hierzu wurde auf Grundlage des theoriebasierten heuristischen Bezugsrahmens mittels teilstrukturierter Interviews das Erfahrungswissen von 23 Experten in persönlichen Gesprächen abgefragt.
Nachdem in Kapitel 5 die Vorgehensweise der empirischen Untersuchung beschrieben wird, erfolgt in Kapitel 6 die Beschreibung der Ergebnisse aus der qualitativen Befragung. Hierzu werden aus den persönlichen Gesprächen zentrale Einflussfaktoren bei der Gestaltung und Umsetzung von Industrie 4.0 im Kontext mit der demografischen Entwicklung analysiert und in die übergeordneten Kategorien Handlungskompetenzen, Einstellung/ Verhalten sowie Erfahrungswissen geclustert.
Anschließend wird der theoriebasierte heuristische Bezugsrahmen durch die übergeordneten Kategorien und Faktoren aus den Expertengesprächen konkretisiert und ergänzt.
In Kapitel 7 werden auf Grundlage des heuristischen Bezugsrahmens sowie der Empfehlungen aus den Experteninterviews beispielhaft Implikationen für die Praxis abgeleitet. Es werden Interventionsmöglichkeiten zur Unterstützung einer positiven Veränderungsbereitschaft und einem positiven Veränderungsverhalten für den Strukturwandel aufgezeigt. Hierzu gehören die Anpassung des Führungsverhaltens im Wandlungsprozess, der Umgang mit der Paradoxie von Stabilität und Flexibilität, der Umgang mit Altersstereotypen in Unternehmen, die Unterstützung von Strategien zu Selektion, Optimierung und Kompensation sowie Maßnahmen zur Ausrichtung von Aktivitäten an die Potenzialrisiken der Beschäftigten.
Eine Zusammenfassung, ein Resümee und ein Ausblick erfolgen abschließend in Kapitel 8.

Wie beeinflussten sich Massenmedien und Massenkonsum im Frankreich der Nachkriegszeit gegenseitig?
Radio Luxembourg war in der europäischen Rundfunklandschaft der Nachkriegszeit eine Ausnahme: Die privatkommerzielle Radiostation sendete werbefinanzierte Unterhaltungsprogramme in die benachbarten Staaten und erreichte damit ein Millionenpublikum. Die Autorin Anna Jehle zeigt anhand verschiedener Untersuchungsfelder - der Unternehmens- und Programmgeschichte, der Zielgruppen, der Marketingaktivitäten und des Werbezeitenverkaufs -, wie eng die Entwicklung der Konsumgesellschaft im Frankreich der sogenannten trente glorieuses mit der Verbreitung und Nutzung des Radios verbunden war. Mit seinem ganz auf Massenkonsum ausgerichteten Rundfunkkonzept war Radio Luxembourg nicht nur integraler Bestandteil, sondern auch Katalysator und Agent der Konsummoderne. Dies hatte weitreichende Auswirkungen für das französische Rundfunksystem, das sich unter dem Einfluss Radio Luxembourgs kommerzialisierte, und zwar bereits lange vor der Deregulierung des Rundfunks in den 1980er Jahren.
Diese Arbeit besteht aus drei Aufsätzen. Der erste Aufsatz („Die Arbeitsmarktpolitik in Südosteuropa: Von der Transformation bis zur EU-Integration“) erörtert die wirtschaftlichen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen in Südosteuropa und die damit einhergehenden Entwicklungen auf den jeweiligen Arbeitsmärkten seit 1991. Im Fokus steht dabei der Einfluss der Arbeitslosigkeit (als systemunabhängiges Problem) auf den EU-Integrationsprozess in den jugoslawischen Nachfolgestaaten und Albanien.
Welchen Einfluss haben der qualifikatorische und regionale Mismatch auf die Arbeitslosigkeit in Kroatien? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, wird im zweiten Kapitel dieser Arbeit („Arbeitslosigkeit im Transformationsprozess: Qualifikatorischer und regionaler Mismatch in Kroatien“) der Mismatch sowohl statisch mit Mismatch-Indikatoren als auch dynamisch im Rahmen der Matching-Funktion erörtert. Unter Anwendung von Paneldaten für neun Berufsgruppen und 21 Regionen im Zeitraum zwischen Januar 2004 und Juni 2015 wird in diesem Kapitel mithilfe von Fixed-Effects-Modellen dieser Einfluss geschätzt.
Führt die Anpassung der Arbeitslosenversicherungsgesetze an die EU-Standards zu einer Verbesserung der Arbeitsmarktergebnisse in den Staaten Südosteuropas? Mit Hilfe von Paneldaten für den Zeitraum 1996–2014 wird für fünf südosteuropäische Staaten (Albanien, Kroatien, Mazedonien, Montenegro und Serbien) dieser Einfluss im Rahmen eines Differenz-in-Differenzen-Modells im dritten Aufsatz („Unvollständige Integration: Eine Differenz-in-Differenzen-Analyse der südosteuropäischen Arbeitsmärkte“) geschätzt.
Start-up incentives targeted at unemployed individuals have become an important tool of the Active Labor Market Policy (ALMP) to fight unemployment in many countries in recent years. In contrast to traditional ALMP instruments like training measures, wage subsidies, or job creation schemes, which are aimed at reintegrating unemployed individuals into dependent employment, start-up incentives are a fundamentally different approach to ALMP, in that they intend to encourage and help unemployed individuals to exit unemployment by entering self-employment and, thus, by creating their own jobs. In this sense, start-up incentives for unemployed individuals serve not only as employment and social policy to activate job seekers and combat unemployment but also as business policy to promote entrepreneurship. The corresponding empirical literature on this topic so far has been mainly focused on the individual labor market perspective, however. The main part of the thesis at hand examines the new start-up subsidy (“Gründungszuschuss”) in Germany and consists of four empirical analyses that extend the existing evidence on start-up incentives for unemployed individuals from multiple perspectives and in the following directions:
First, it provides the first impact evaluation of the new start-up subsidy in Germany. The results indicate that participation in the new start-up subsidy has significant positive and persistent effects on both reintegration into the labor market as well as the income profiles of participants, in line with previous evidence on comparable German and international programs, which emphasizes the general potential of start-up incentives as part of the broader ALMP toolset. Furthermore, a new innovative sensitivity analysis of the applied propensity score matching approach integrates findings from entrepreneurship and labor market research about the key role of an individual’s personality on start-up decision, business performance, as well as general labor market outcomes, into the impact evaluation of start-up incentives. The sensitivity analysis with regard to the inclusion and exclusion of usually unobserved personality variables reveals that differences in the estimated treatment effects are small in magnitude and mostly insignificant. Consequently, concerns about potential overestimation of treatment effects in previous evaluation studies of similar start-up incentives due to usually unobservable personality variables are less justified, as long as the set of observed control variables is sufficiently informative (Chapter 2).
Second, the thesis expands our knowledge about the longer-term business performance and potential of subsidized businesses arising from the start-up subsidy program. In absolute terms, the analysis shows that a relatively high share of subsidized founders successfully survives in the market with their original businesses in the medium to long run. The subsidy also yields a “double dividend” to a certain extent in terms of additional job creation. Compared to “regular”, i.e., non-subsidized new businesses founded by non-unemployed individuals in the same quarter, however, the economic and growth-related impulses set by participants of the subsidy program are only limited with regard to employment growth, innovation activity, or investment. Further investigations of possible reasons for these differences show that differential business growth paths of subsidized founders in the longer run seem to be mainly limited by higher restrictions to access capital and by unobserved factors, such as less growth-oriented business strategies and intentions, as well as lower (subjective) entrepreneurial persistence. Taken together, the program has only limited potential as a business and entrepreneurship policy intended to induce innovation and economic growth (Chapters 3 and 4).
And third, an empirical analysis on the level of German regional labor markets yields that there is a high regional variation in subsidized start-up activity relative to overall new business formation. The positive correlation between regular start-up intensity and the share among all unemployed individuals who participate in the start-up subsidy program suggests that (nascent) unemployed founders also profit from the beneficial effects of regional entrepreneurship capital. Moreover, the analysis of potential deadweight and displacement effects from an aggregated regional perspective emphasizes that the start-up subsidy for unemployed individuals represents a market intervention into existing markets, which affects incumbents and potentially produces inefficiencies and market distortions. This macro perspective deserves more attention and research in the future (Chapter 5).
Companies have a keen interest in developing skilled negotiators in order to improve their negotiation outcome. A crucial determinant of the negotiation outcome are negotiation styles that represent the negotiator’s actual behavior during the negotiation process. In this context, the author examines the variation in negotiation styles throughout the negotiation process, points out the relevance of the negotiator’s characteristics and situational context as determinants of negotiation styles, and emphasizes the importance not only of actual but also of perceived negotiation behavior. As a result, existing negotiation research is advanced as new perspectives on negotiation styles are offered to improve a negotiator’s performance.
Seizing long-term growth opportunities is both a key goal of and a challenge for companies at the same time. Saturated markets and shorter product lifecycles have changed market dynamics over the past decades, in such a way that competition on price or quality leadership has receded into the background. Instead, firms increasingly depend on the successful development of new business fields and strong brands to retain customers and spur growth. Thus, the two pillars of business development and brand management have become core strategic functions.
By focusing on innovation – a key dimension of business development – this book analyzes the interrelations between innovation and brand management and the ways in which both functions can benefit from each other. Innovations are considered crucial for building brand equity and revitalizing brand images in the long term, while vice versa, branding could facilitate consumer adoption of a newly launched innovative product or service. Since a brand is a first quality signal, it could act as a vehicle for consumers to reduce the risks and uncertainty associated with a novel product from a consumer's perspective and encourage product trial.
This book empirically investigates whether such interdependencies exist and how managers can make use of them to best leverage their company’s innovation and branding efforts. In particular, the author examines the interplay between innovation and brand management by analyzing (1) how innovations impact consumer attitudes towards the (parent) brand and its brand images, (2) how branding an innovation facilitates its market success, and (3) how building brand equity can serve as a buffer against impacts from adverse events such as a product scandal.
Its findings are highly relevant from a managerial and a theoretical perspective. They provide managers with guidance on two key aspects of business development and innovation management: One, how is innovation employed in order to best enhance a brand's equity (e.g., to revitalize its brand image)? Two, how to choose whether to leverage an existing brand or to develop a new brand in order to facilitate consumer adoption of a new innovation?
Der Autor entwickelt ein Modell des strategischen und operativen Managements in Konzernrechtsabteilungen und richtet dabei den Fokus auf praktische Erkenntnisse, die auf betriebs- und volkswirtschaftlichen Theorien sowie zahlreichen Experteninterviews aufgebaut sind. Ein besonderes Augenmerk legt er auf die Spezifika von Rechtsdienstleistungen im Vergleich zu anderen Leistungen, die in einem Konzern benötigt werden. Die Sichtweise des Leiters einer Rechtsabteilung /General Counsels steht dabei im Vordergrund. Es wird die Frage untersucht, wie dieser die Leitung und Steuerung der gesamten Abteilung am effizientesten und effektivsten ausfüllen kann.
Systematische Abweichungen zwischen gehandelten Marktpreisen und fundamentalen Werten von Wertpapieren zeigen bis heute, dass Kapitalmärkte weder vollkommen noch effizient sind. Sowohl die Finanzmarktforschung als auch die Investmentpraxis befassen sich weiter mit der Suche nach geeigneten Kapitalmarktmodellen. Neue Investmentstrategien auf Basis verbesserter Erklärungen von Wertpapierrenditen etablieren sich zunehmend am Markt. Das traditionelle Konzept der Kapitalmarktanomalie Value versus Growth beweist auch in erweiterter Form seine Gültigkeit und zeigt, dass Wertpapierrenditen und fundamentale Charakteristika von Unternehmen zusammenhängen. Solche Erkenntnisse greift der Autor auf und analysiert die traditionellen Assetklassen Aktien und Anleihen.
Für die empirische Untersuchung werden Wertpapierportfolios ermittelt, die von fundamentalen Bewertungskennzahlen abhängen, d. h. eine Kombination von Kapitalmarkt- und Jahresabschlussdaten bilden. Erkenntnisgewinne ergeben sich im Rahmen dieser Forschungsarbeit vor allem zu den Ursachen von Fehlbewertungen bei Wertpapieren im Sinne der Kapitalmarktanomalie Value versus Growth. Zudem wird gezeigt, dass die fundamentale Analyse als Bewertungsmethode sowohl für Aktien als auch für Anleihen relevant ist. Überrenditen können somit systematisch ausgenutzt werden. Dies erscheint für die Praxis besonders wichtig, da Fonds sowohl in Aktien wie auch in Anleihen investieren. Da der Anleihemarkt deutlich größer als der Aktienmarkt ist, bieten Anleihen beträchtliche Diversifikationspotentiale für Investoren, sofern eine Ausnutzung von Kapitalmarktanomalien angestrebt wird.
Für den Industrialisierungsprozess von Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern haben ausländische Direktinvestitionen (ADI) eine wichtige Funktion. Sie können zum einen zu einer Erhöhung des industriellen Output des Ziellandes führen und zum anderen als Träger von technologischem Wissen fungieren. Neues Wissen kann den Empfängerländern der ADI durch Spillovereffekte und Technologietransfers ausländischer Tochterunternehmen zufließen. Diese Arbeit soll Antworten auf die Fragen geben, durch welche Mechanismen Spillovereffekte und Technologietransfers ausgelöst werden und wie Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern diesen Wissenszufluss zur Beschleunigung ihres Industrialisierungsprozesses einsetzen können. Hierfür wird ein Konzept zur Förderung von Spillovereffekten entwickelt. Weiterhin wird ein theoretisches Modell entwickelt, in dem der Technologietransfer ausländischer Exportplattformen erstmals in Abhängigkeit des Anteils der Vorprodukte, die im Gastland nachgefragt werden, untersucht. In den Fallstudien Irland und Malaysia werden die Ergebnisse des theoretischen Modells sowie des entwickelten Konzepts illustriert.
Der technologische Wandel stellt Organisationen vor die Herausforderung, Innovationen möglichst schnell produktiv zu nutzen und damit einen Wettbewerbsvorteil zu erzielen. Der Erfolg der Technologieeinführung hängt stark mit der Schaffung von Akzeptanz bei den Mitarbeitern zusammen. Bestehende Ansätze wie die Diffusionstheorie (Rogers, 2003) oder das Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989; Venkatesh und Davis, 1996; Venkatesh und Davis, 2000; Venkatesh, Morris u. a., 2003) widmen sich dem Organisationskontext jedoch nur am Rande. Ihre Modelle zielen auf die Übernahme einer Technologie in freier Entscheidung und im Marktkontext ab. Weiterhin beleuchten sie den Widerstand gegen Neuerungen nicht, welcher sich bei der verpflichtenden Übernahme bilden kann. Zur Untersuchung der Technologieeinführung und von Akzeptanzbildungsprozessen in Organisationen sind sie daher nur begrenzt nutzbar.
Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es daher, den spezifischen Einfluss des Kontextes Organisation auf die Akzeptanz und das Nutzungsverhalten herauszuarbeiten. Konkreter soll die Forschungsfrage geklärt werden, welchen Einfluss unterschiedliche Organisationstypen auf die Akzeptanz- und Nutzungsdynamik innerhalb von Organisationen haben. Hierfür wird die Erweiterung und Synthese bestehender Modelle der Akzeptanzforschung um organisationsspezifische Attribute vorgenommen. Das resultierende Modell erfasst die dynamische Entwicklung innerhalb der Organisation und ermöglicht damit die Beobachtung des Wandels. Die Funktionsweise des entwickelten Modells soll in einem Simulationsexperiment demonstriert und die Wirkung unterschiedlicher Organisationsformen verdeutlicht werden.
Das Modell vereint daher zwei Perspektiven: Die personale Perspektive fasst Akzeptanz als kognitiv-psychischen Prozess auf individueller Ebene. Dieser basiert auf den Kalkülen und Entscheidungen einzelner Personen. Zentral sind hierfür die Beiträge der Diffusionstheorie (Rogers, 2003) sowie das Technology Acceptance Model in seinen diversen Weiterentwicklungen und Veränderungen (Davis, 1989; Venkatesh und Davis, 1996; Venkatesh und Davis, 2000; Venkatesh, Morris u. a., 2003). Individuelle Faktoren aus unterschiedlichen Fit-Theorien (Goodhue und Thompson, 1995; Floyd, 1986; Liu, Lee und Chen, 2011; Parkes, 2013) werden genutzt, um diese Modelle anzureichern. Neben der Entwicklung
einer positiven, förderlichen Einstellung muss jedoch auch die Ablehnung und das offene Opponieren gegen die Innovation berücksichtigt werden (Patsiotis, Hughes und Webber, 2012).
Die organisatorische Perspektive hingegen sieht Akzeptanzentscheidungen eingebettet in den sozialen Kontext der Organisation. Die gegenseitige Beeinflussung basiert auf der Beobachtung der Umgebung und der Internalisierung sozialen Drucks. Dem steht in Organisationen die intendierte Beeinflussung in Form von Steuerung gegenüber. Beide Vorgänge formen das Akzeptanz- oder das Nutzungsverhalten der Mitarbeiter. Ausgehend von einem systemtheoretischen Organisationsbegriff werden unterschiedliche Steuerungsmedien (Luhmann, 1997; Fischer, 2009) vorgestellt. Diese können durch Steuerungsakteure
(Change Agents, Management) intendiert eingesetzt werden, um den Akzeptanz- und Nutzungsprozess über Interventionen zu gestalten.
Die Wirkung der Medien unterscheidet sich in verschiedenen Organisationstypen. Zur Analyse unterschiedlicher Organisationstypen werden die Konfigurationen nach Mintzberg (1979) herangezogen. Diese zeichnen sich durch unterschiedliche Koordinationsmechanismen aus, welche wiederum auf dem Einsatz von Steuerungsmedien beruhen.
Die Demonstration der Funktionsweise und Analysemöglichkeiten des entwickelten Modells erfolgt anhand eines Simulationsexperiments mittels der Simulationsplattform AnyLogic. Das Gültigkeitsspektrum wird anhand einer Sensitivitätsanalyse geprüft.
In der Simulation lassen sich spezifische Muster der Nutzung und Akzeptanzentwicklung nachweisen. Die Akzeptanz ist durch ein initiales Absinken und ein anschließendes gedämpftes Wachstum gekennzeichnet. Die Nutzung wird in der Organisation hingegen schnell durchgesetzt und verharrt dann auf einem stabilen Niveau. Für die Organisationstypen konnten unterschiedliche Effekte beobachtet werden. So eignet sich die bürokratische Steuerungsform zur Nutzungserhöhung, schafft es jedoch nicht, die Akzeptanz zu steigern. Organisationen, welche eher auf gegenseitige Abstimmung zur Koordination ausgelegt sind, erhöhen die Akzeptanz, jedoch nicht die Nutzung. Weiterhin ist die Entwicklung der Akzeptanz in diesem Organisationstyp sehr unsicher und weist einen hohen Schwankungsbereich auf.
Over the past decade, an increasing number of public organizations involved in fisheries and marine environmental management in Europe have changed their formal coordination structures. Similar reorganizations of formal coordination structures can be observed for organizations at different administrative levels of governance with different mandates across the policy cycle.
Against the backdrop of this phenomenon, this PhD thesis is interested in exploring how these similar organizational reforms can be explained and why the formal coordination structures for fisheries and marine environmental management have been reorganized in the cases of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs of the European Commission (DG FISH), the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM). Accordingly, the objective is to shed light on how public organizations actually “behave” or “tick” in the face of increasingly complex coordination challenges in fisheries and marine environmental management.
To address these questions, the thesis draws on different theoretical perspectives in organization theory, namely an instrumental and an institutional perspective. These theoretical perspectives provide different explanations for how organizations deal with issues of formal organizational structure and coordination. In order to evaluate the explanatory relevance of these theoretical perspectives in the cases of ICES, DG FISH, the IMR and the SwAM, a case study approach based on congruence analysis is applied. The case studies are based on document analysis, the analysis of organizational charts and their change over time, as well as expert interviews. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the coordination debate in the marine policy and governance literature from a hitherto omitted public administration and organization theory perspective, as well as explaining coordination efforts at the organizational level with an organization theory approach.
The findings indicate that the formal coordination structures of the organizations studied have not only changed to solve coordination problems in fisheries and marine environmental management efficiently and effectively, but also to follow modern management paradigms in marine governance and to ensure the legitimacy of these organizations. Moreover, it was found that in the cases of ICES, DG FISH, the IMR and the SwAM, the organizational changes were strongly influenced by external pressures and interactions with other organizations in the organizational field of fisheries and marine environmental management in Europe. Driven by forces of isomorphism, a gradual convergence of the formal horizontal coordination structures for fisheries and marine environmental management of the organizations studied can be observed. However, the findings also indicate that although the organizational changes observed may convey a reaction to changing environments, they do not necessarily reflect actual policy change and the implementation of new management concepts.
Persistently high unemployment rates are a major threat to the social cohesion in many societies. To moderate the consequences of unemployment industrialized countries spend substantial shares of their GDP on labor market policies, while in recent years there has been a shift from passive measures, such as transfer payments, towards more activating elements which aim to promote the reintegration into the labor market. Although, there exists a wide range of evidence about the effects of traditional active labor market policies (ALMP) on participants’ subsequent labor market outcomes, a deeper understanding of the impact of these programs on the job search behavior and the interplay with long-term labor market outcomes is necessary. This allows policy makers to improve the design of labor market policies and the allocation of unemployed workers into specific programs. Moreover, previous studies have shown that many traditional ALMP programs, like public employment or training schemes, do not achieve the desired results. This underlines the importance of understanding the effect mechanisms, but also the need to develop innovative programs that are more effective. This thesis extends the existing literature with respect to several dimensions.
First, it analyzes the impact of job seekers’ beliefs about upcoming ALMPs programs on the effectiveness of realized treatments later during the unemployment spell. This provides important insights with respect to the job search process and relates potential anticipation effects (on the job seekers behavior before entering a program) to the vast literature evaluating the impact of participating in an ALMP program on subsequent outcomes. The empirical results show that training programs are more effective if the participants expect participation ex ante, while expected treatment effects are unrelated to the actual labor market outcomes of participants. A subsequent analysis of the effect mechanisms shows that job seekers who expect to participate also receive more information by their caseworker and show a higher willingness to adjust their search behavior in association with an upcoming ALMP program. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of training programs can be improved by providing more detailed information about the possibility of a future treatment early during the unemployment spell.
Second, the thesis investigates the effects of a relatively new class of programs that aim to improve the geographical mobility of unemployed workers with respect to the job search behavior, the subsequent job finding prospects and the returns to labor market mobility. To estimate the causal impact of these programs, it is exploited that local employment agencies have a degree of autonomy when deciding about the regional-specific policy mix. The findings show that the policy style of the employment agency indeed affects the job search behavior of unemployed workers. Job seekers who are assigned to agencies with higher preferences for mobility programs increase their search radius without affecting the total number of job applications. This shift of the search effort to distant regions leads to a higher probability to find a regular job and higher wages. Moreover, it is shown that participants in one of the subsidy programs who move to geographically distant region a earn significantly higher wages, end up in more stable jobs and face a higher long-run employment probability compared to non-participants.
Third, the thesis offers an empirical assessment of the unconfoundedness assumption with respect to the relevance of variables that are usually unobserved in studies evaluating ALMP programs. A unique dataset that combines administrative records and survey data allows us to observe detailed information on typical covariates, as well as usually unobserved variables including personality traits, attitudes, expectations, intergenerational information, as well as indicators about social networks and labor market flexibility. The findings show that, although our set of usually unobserved variables indeed has a significant effect on the selection into ALMP programs, the overall impact when estimating treatment effects is rather small.
Finally, the thesis also examines the importance of gender differences in reservation wages that allows assessing the importance of special ALMP programs targeting women. In particular, when including reservation wages in a wage decomposition exercise, the gender gap in realized wages becomes small and statistically insignificant. The strong connection between gender differences in reservation wages and realized wages raises the question how these differences in reservation wages are set in the first place. Since traditional covariates cannot sufficiently explain the gender gap in reservation wages, we perform subgroup analysis to better understand what the driving forces behind this gender gap are.
Wie hängen Vertrauen, Konsumeinstellungen und Verhalten bezüglich Fairtrade zusammen?
Dies ist die grundlegende Frage, mit der sich diese Arbeit beschäftigt. Lea Dirkwinkel analysiert die Fragestellung am Beispiel des Fairtrade-Labels, das als Symbol für das Produktzertifizierungssystem von Fairtrade International steht und das bekannteste Beispiel der Fairtrade-Bewegung darstellt.
Die Forschungsfrage wird einerseits zurückgeführt auf die Tatsache, dass die Qualität von Fairtrade-Gütern durch Konsumenten nicht erfasst werden kann, und andererseits durch die sogenannte Einstellungs-Verhaltens-Lücke begründet. Die Einstellungs-Verhaltens-Lücke beschreibt die kognitive Dissonanz zwischen positiven ethischen Einstellungen und Kaufintentionen sowie dem tatsächlichen Kaufverhalten und widerspricht traditionellen Einstellungs-Verhaltens-Modellen, die besagen, dass die Einstellung das Verhalten von Menschen bestimmt. Beide zuvor genannten Aspekte begründen in der Marketingtheorie die Relevanz von Vertrauen für den Konsum von Fairtrade-Produkten, aber auch anderen nachhaltigen Gütern.
Die Analyse basiert auf einer Online-Datenerhebung und erfolgte anhand der Kombination aus Conjoint Analyse und Strukturgleichungsanalyse. Die innovative methodische Vorgehensweise lieferte sowohl für die Marketingforschung als auch für die Praxis relevante Ergebnisse. Zum einem wird die wichtige Rolle von Vertrauen für den Fairtrade-Konsum bestätigt; zum anderen erklärt die Arbeit, wie sich Fairtrade-Vertrauen auswirkt. Das Vertrauen in das Fairtrade-Label stellt den Ausgangspunkt für Vertrauensbeziehungen zwischen Fairtrade und den Konsumenten dar und wird auf die zertifizierten Produkte übertragen.
Empfehlungen, die sich daraus ergeben, konzentrieren sich auf Maßnahmen, die das Vertrauen in Fairtrade-Labels stärken, z.B. durch die Reduzierung der Anzahl verschiedener Labels oder die verstärkte Kommunikation der Unabhängigkeit von Zertifizierungsorganisationen.
Clusterstrukturen werden vielfach diskutiert. Vom Allheilmittel bis hin zum chaotischen Konzept sind viele Ideen und Meinungen vertreten. Dabei ist es schon schwierig, eine einheitliche Clusterdefinition zu finden. Dennoch existieren in der Realität sehr viele Cluster in Deutschland, aber auch in Europa, mit unterschiedlichsten Schwerpunkten. Insbesondere in Deutschland werden bis heute stetig neue Clusterstrukturen etabliert – sowohl auf Bundes- als auch auf Landesebene. Im Fokus stehen meist Synergien im Bereich der Beschaffung oder auch der Innovationsentwicklung. Dabei ist einer der drängendsten Fragen der unternehmerischen Entwicklung, die richtigen Talente zu finden. In Zeiten eines stetig wachsenden Fachkräftemangels, haben Cluster noch keinen Lösungsansatz gefunden, diesem Bedürfnis Ihrer Akteure Rechnung zu tragen. Am Beispiel des Clusters Energietechnik der Länder Berlin und Brandenburg versucht der Autor, genau solche Lösungsansätze zu analysieren, aufzuzeigen und die Rolle des Clusters und seines Clustermanagements in diesem Prozess zu definieren. Ist ein Clustermanagement in der Pflicht, Ideen im Cluster zu platzieren, oder eher in der Rolle eines Katalysators von Ideen? Wie müsste ein Clustermanagement zusammengesetzt sein, um solch eine Herausforderung mit größtmöglicher Akzeptanz anzugehen und wie kann opportunistisches Verhalten der Clusterakteure dabei verhindert werden? Die zentrale Frage, welche sich letztendlich daraus ableitet, ist, ob ein Clustermanagement in diesem Prozess eine Brückenfunktion im Sinne eines Boundary Spanners einnehmen und damit einen wirklichen Mehrwert im Sinne einer clusterbezogenen Fachkräftesicherung bieten kann.

In der Gesamtschau stellt die Analyse die erste umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Fachgebiet dar, welches in der Praxis seit der Einführung der Fallpauschalen (DRG) einer wachsenden Nachfrage unterliegt. Diese junge Fachdisziplin entwickelte sich aufgrund der veränderten politischen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen im Bereich der Krankenhausfinanzierung und gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung.

Auf welchen Wegen werden private Haushalte in Deutschland reich und unter welchen individuellen und strukturellen Umständen vollziehen sich diese Prozesse? Melanie Böwing-Schmalenbrock untersucht gesellschaftliche Verteilungsprozesse und weist auf eine entscheidende Bedingung moderner Gesellschaften hin: die individuelle Chance auf gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und freie Lebensführung. Die Entstehung von Reichtum erweist sich als ein komplexes Zusammenspiel verschiedener Reichtumsquellen, es wird die erhebliche Relevanz von Arbeit und Erbschaft deutlich sowie die entscheidende Rolle der Persönlichkeit.
Die Dissertation befasst sich mit der Organisation von humanitären Lufttransporten bei internationalen Katastrophen. Diese Flüge finden immer dann statt, wenn die eigene Hilfeleistungsfähigkeit der von Katastrophen betroffenen Regionen überfordert ist und Hilfe aus dem Ausland angefordert wird. Bei jedem der darauffolgenden Hilfseinsätze stehen Hilfsorganisationen und weitere mit der Katastrophenhilfe beteiligte Akteure erneut vor der Herausforderung, in kürzester Zeit eine logistische Kette aufzubauen, damit die Güter zum richtigen Zeitpunkt in der richtigen Menge am richtigen Ort eintreffen.
Humanitäre Lufttransporte werden in der Regel als Charterflüge organisiert und finden auf langen Strecken zu Zielen statt, die nicht selten abseits der hochfrequentierten Warenströme liegen. Am Markt ist das Angebot für derartige Transportdienstleistungen nicht gesichert verfügbar und unter Umständen müssen Hilfsorganisationen warten bis Kapazitäten mit geeigneten Flugzeugen zur Verfügung stehen. Auch qualitativ sind die Anforderungen von Hilfsorganisationen an die Hilfsgütertransporte höher als im regulären Linientransport.
Im Rahmen der Dissertation wird ein alternatives Organisationsmodell für die Beschaffung und den Betrieb sowie die Finanzierung von humanitären Lufttransporten aufgebaut. Dabei wird die gesicherte Verfügbarkeit von besonders flexibel einsetzbaren Flugzeugen in Betracht gezogen, mit deren Hilfe die Qualität und insbesondere die Planbarkeit der Hilfeleistung verbessert werden könnte.
Ein idealtypisches Modell wird hier durch die Kopplung der Kollektivgütertheorie, die der Finanzwissenschaft zuzuordnen ist, mit der Vertragstheorie als Bestandteil der Neuen Institutionenökonomik erarbeitet.
Empirische Beiträge zur Vertragstheorie bemängeln, dass es bei der Beschaffung von transaktionsspezifischen Investitionsgütern, wie etwa Flugzeugen mit besonderen Eigenschaften, aufgrund von Risiken und Umweltunsicherheiten zu ineffizienten Lösungen zwischen Vertragspartnern kommt. Die vorliegende Dissertation zeigt eine Möglichkeit auf, wie durch Aufbau einer gemeinsamen Informationsbasis ex-ante, also vor Vertragsschluss, Risiken und Umweltunsicherheiten reduziert werden können. Dies geschieht durch eine temporale Erweiterung eines empirischen Modells zur Bestimmung der Organisationsform bei transaktionsspezifischen Investitionsgütern aus der Regulierungsökonomik.
Die Arbeitet leistet darüber hinaus einen Beitrag zur Steigerung der Effizienz in der humanitären Logistik durch die fallspezifische Betrachtung von horizontalen Kooperationen und Professionalisierung der Hilfeleistung im Bereich der humanitären Luftfahrt.
Selbstverständnis und Image der Unternehmensberatung, das Bewerbern, Mitarbeitern und Kunden gleichermaßen Wissensvorsprung durch Ballung der besten Köpfe verspricht, scheinen sowohl für den Berater als auch den Kunden einen Erfolgsfaktor einzunehmen. Die Karriere des Unternehmensberaters wird im Vergleich zu anderen Branchen durch eine starke Formalisierung anhand von Kompetenzen und Entwicklungspfaden begleitet. Talentgewinnung und -entwicklung sind dabei Kernaufgaben des Personalmanagements, das gerade aufgrund seiner kompetenzbasierten Instrumente und formalistischen Strukturen als Erfolgsfaktor gilt. Die Analyse der Autorin setzt beim Personalmanagement der Unternehmensberatung an. Auffällig erscheinen dabei zunächst ähnliche Strukturen und Instrumente zur Talentidentifikation und -entwicklung, die für eine gesamte Branche charakteristisch sind. Speziell für Professional Service Firms ist der Mitarbeiter die entscheidende ökonomische Größe in der Leistungserbringung. Der Kunde beurteilt die Unternehmensleistung im Zusammenspiel mit seinem Kontakt zum Mitarbeiter, der maßgeblich für die Leistungserbringung und Qualitätssicherung verantwortlich ist. Der Analysefokus liegt deshalb im Personalmanagement von Unternehmensberatungen als Teil der Professional Service Firms und wird vor dem Hintergrund systemtheoretischer Überlegungen beleuchtet. Eckpfeiler des Systems zeigen sich insbesondere in Form von branchenüblichen Rekrutierungsstrategien, der formalistischen Leistungsbeurteilung, dem vergleichsweise steilen Karriereverlauf sowie anhand überdurchschnittlicher Gehälter. Hat die Unternehmensberatung die Qualifizierung und Entwicklung ihrer Mitarbeiter zum Erfolgsfaktor gemacht? Die Autorin analysiert, ob das Personalmanagement und seine Verfahren berechtigterweise als Erfolgsfaktor einer Branche gelten, welche Faktoren den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg der Branche beeinflussen und welche Grenzen die Nutzenanalyse in Bezug auf die Beratungsleistung erfährt. ?
It is the intention of this study to contribute to further rethinking and innovating in the Microcredit business which stands at a turning point – after around 40 years of practice it is endangered to fail as a tool for economic development and to become a doubtful finance product with a random scope instead. So far, a positive impact of Microfinance on the improvement of the lives of the poor could not be confirmed. Over-indebtment of borrowers due to the pre-dominance of consumption Microcredits has become a widespread problem. Furthermore, a rising number of abusive and commercially excessive practices have been reported.
In fact, the Microfinance sector appears to suffer from a major underlying deficit: there does not exist a coherent and transparent understanding of its meaning and objectives so that Microfinance providers worldwide follow their own approaches of Microfinance which tend to differ considerably from each other.
In this sense the study aims at consolidating the multi-faced and very often confusingly different Microcredit profiles that exist nowadays. Subsequently, in this study, the Microfinance spectrum will be narrowed to one clear-cut objective, in fact away from the mere monetary business transactions to poor people it has gradually been reduced to back towards a tool for economic development as originally envisaged by its pioneers.
Hence, the fundamental research question of this study is whether, and under which conditions, Microfinance may attain a positive economic impact leading to an improvement of the living of the poor.
The study is structured in five parts: the three main parts (II.-IV.) are surrounded by an introduction (I.) and conclusion (V.). In part II., the Microfinance sector is analysed critically aiming to identify the challenges persisting as well as their root causes. In the third part, a change to the macroeconomic perspective is undertaken in oder to learn about the potential and requirements of small-scale finance to enhance economic development, particularly within the economic context of less developed countries. By consolidating the insights gained in part IV., the elements of a new concept of Microfinance with the objecitve to achieve economic development of its borrowers are elaborated.
Microfinance is a rather sensitive business the great fundamental idea of which is easily corruptible and, additionally, the recipients of which are predestined victims of abuse due to their limited knowledge in finance. It therefore needs to be practiced responsibly, but also according to clear cut definitions of its meaning and objectives all institutions active in the sector should be devoted to comply with. This is especially relevant as the demand for Microfinance services is expected to rise further within the years coming. For example, the recent refugee migration movement towards Europe entails a vast potential for Microfinance to enable these people to make a new start into economic life. This goes to show that Microfinance may no longer mainly be associated with a less developed economic context, but that it will gain importance as a financial instrument in the developed economies, too.
