Satellite telemetry is an increasingly utilized technology in wildlife research, and current devices can track individual animal movements at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. However, as we enter the golden age of satellite telemetry, we need an in-depth understanding of the main technological, species-specific and environmental factors that determine the success and failure of satellite tracking devices across species and habitats. Here, we assess the relative influence of such factors on the ability of satellite telemetry units to provide the expected amount and quality of data by analyzing data from over 3,000 devices deployed on 62 terrestrial species in 167 projects worldwide. We evaluate the success rate in obtaining GPS fixes as well as in transferring these fixes to the user and we evaluate failure rates. Average fix success and data transfer rates were high and were generally better predicted by species and unit characteristics, while environmental characteristics influenced the variability of performance. However, 48% of the unit deployments ended prematurely, half of them due to technical failure. Nonetheless, this study shows that the performance of satellite telemetry applications has shown improvements over time, and based on our findings, we provide further recommendations for both users and manufacturers.
PURPOSE. Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is an autoimmune orbital disorder associated with Graves' disease caused by thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies. Orbital fibroblasts (OFs) and CD40 play a key role in disease pathogenesis. The bioactive lipid sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) has been implicated in promoting adipogenesis, fibrosis, and inflammation in OFs. We investigated the role of CD40 signaling in inducing S1P activity in orbital inflammation.
METHODS. OFs and T cells were derived from GO patients and healthy control (Ctl) persons. S1P abundance in orbital tissues was evaluated by immunofluorescence. OFs were stimulated with CD40 ligand and S1P levels were determined by ELISA. Further, activities of acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), acid ceramidase, and sphingosine kinase were measured by ultraperformance liquid chromatography. Sphingosine and ceramide contents were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Finally, the role for S1P in T-cell attraction was investigated by T-cell migration assays.
RESULTS. GO orbital tissue showed elevated amounts of S1P as compared to control samples. Stimulation of CD40 induced S1P expression in GO-derived OFs, while Ctl-OFs remained unaffected. A significant increase of ASM and sphingosine kinase activities, as well as lipid formation, was observed in GO-derived OFs. Migration assay of T cells in the presence of SphK inhibitor revealed that S1P released by GO-OFs attracted T cells for migration.
CONCLUSIONS. The results demonstrated that CD40 ligand stimulates GO fibroblast to produce S1P, which is a driving force for T-cell migration. The results support the use of S1P receptor signaling modulators in GO management.

Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are emerging as a global problem with increased evidence and prevalence in numerous countries. A dysregulated sphingolipid metabolism occurs in patients with ulcerative colitis and is discussed to contribute to its pathogenesis. In the present study, we determined the impact of acid sphingomyelinase (Asm), which catalyzes the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramide, on the course of Citrobacter (C.) rodentium-driven colitis. C. rodentium is an enteric pathogen and induces colonic inflammation very similar to the pathology in patients with ulcerative colitis. We found that mice with Asm deficiency or Asm inhibition were strongly susceptible to C. rodentium infection. These mice showed increased levels of C. rodentium in the feces and were prone to bacterial spreading to the systemic organs. In addition, mice lacking Asm activity showed an uncontrolled inflammatory T(h)1 and T(h)17 response, which was accompanied by a stronger colonic pathology compared to infected wild type mice. These findings identified Asm as an essential regulator of mucosal immunity to the enteric pathogen C. rodentium.
Am 25. und 26. Juni 2004 fand die sechste Konferenz des Forschungskreises Vereinte Nationen an der Universität Potsdam statt. Die Konferenz befaßte sich mit dem Thema „Integrative Konzepte in der Reform der Vereinten Nationen". Kennzeichnend für die „Potsdamer UNO-Konferenzen", die traditionell am letzten Wochenende im Juni veranstaltet werden, sind die Verbindung von Wissenschaft und Praxis auf der einen Seite und die Beteiligung unterschiedlicher Disziplinen auf der anderen. Sieben Referate beschäftigten sich mit bisher nicht oder nicht genügend in der Arbeit der Vereinten Nationen einbezogenen Aspekten bei der Struktur-Reform. Die nachstehend abgedruckten sechs Beiträge - von Dr. Jochen Prantl, der zum Thema „Informelle Staatengruppen als Instrument zur Konfliktregulierung: Auswirkungen auf die Arbeitsweise des Sicherheitsrates der Vereinten Nationen" referiert hatte, lag bei der Drucklegung der Broschüre kein Manuskript vor - und die zugehörigen Diskussionen, die hier zusammengefaßt wiedergegeben werden, geben ein anschauliches Bild von der Komplexität der Aufgabe „UN-Reform". Die damit verbundenen Fragen, die für das zukünftige Funktionieren der Vereinten Nationen, aber auch für das Klima innerhalb der internationalen Gemeinschaft sehr wichtig sind, werden in dieser Dokumentation diskutiert. Die im Forschungskreis vertretene deutschsprachige UN-Forschung machte auf der Konferenz deutlich, daß man zu kurz greift, wenn sich die Reformdiskussion auf den ständigen Sitz für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Sicherheitsrat beschränkt. Der Forschungskreis möchte mit dieser Broschüre allen Interessierten die Möglichkeit geben, andere, nicht minder wichtige Aspekte dieser Diskussion kennenzulernen. Der Forschungskreis dankt der Juristischen Fakultät der Universität Potsdam für die Gastfreundschaft und dem MenschenRechtsZentrum der Universität Potsdam für die Kooperation bei der Organisation der Konferenz.
