N2  - Christian (von) Rother, Chef der Preußischen Seehandlung 1820–1848, ist vermutlich die prägendste Gestalt der Institution im 19. Jahrhundert. Seine Lebensgeschichte als Sohn eines schlesischen Bauern zeugt von sozialem Aufstieg und einer eindrucksvollen Beamtenkarriere. Rother formte die Seehandlung zu einem Konglomerat von gewerblichen Unternehmen, die durch Bankengeschäfte, Chausseebauprogramme und das Engagement des Staates in der Wirtschaftsförderung leistungsstark gemacht werden sollten. Der Erfolg blieb allerdings unterschiedlich. In den 1840er Jahren stießen diese Bemühungen darüber hinaus auf Kritik von unternehmerischen Konkurrenten. Bleibende Bedeutung behauptete eine von Rother gegründete soziale Einrichtung, die in Berlin ansässige Rother-Stiftung für arme und unverheiratete Töchter von Beamten und Offizieren.
N2  - Christian (von) Rother, head of the Preußische Seehandlung 1820–1848, is probably the most influential figure of the institute in the 19th century. His life story as the son of a Silesian farmer bears witness to social advancement and an impressive civil service career. Rother shaped the Seehandlung into a conglomerate of commercial enterprises, which were to be made powerful through banking transactions, road construction programs and the state's involvement in economic development. It met with only partial success. In the 1840s, moreover, these efforts met with criticism from entrepreneurial competitors. A social institution founded by Rother, the Berlin-based “Rother-Stiftung” for poor and unmarried daughters of civil servants and officers, claimed lasting significance.

N2  - Das in Bremen gebaute Handelsschiff Princess Louise, gewissermaßen das Flaggschiff der Preußischen Seehandlung, unternahm zwischen 1825 und 1844 insgesamt sechs Weltumsegelungen. Das Schiff fungierte u. a. als Überbringer diplomatischer Geschenke zwischen Herrschern und Herrscherfamilien. Von der ersten Weltumsegelung brachte es den berühmten Federmantel mit, den der hawai’ianische Monarch Kamehameha III. dem preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm III. zum Geschenk machte. Bei der zweiten Weltumsegelung wurden wiederum Gaben des preußischen Königs nach Hawai‘i transportiert. Die Princess Louise brachte aber darüber hinaus auch Gebrauchsgegenstände wie Kleidung, Waffen, Körbe, Tongefäße und Fächer aus der Südsee und Südamerika nach Europa. Solche ethnographischen Objekte der Vergangenheit können nicht zuletzt mit und durch zeitgenössische Kunst Fragen an die Gegenwart stellen.
N2  - The merchant ship Princess Louise, built in Bremen and to a certain extent the flagship of the Preußische Seehandlung, sailed around the world six times between 1825 and 1844. Among other things, the ship acted as a courier of diplomatic gifts between rulers and ruling families. From the first circumnavigation, it brought back the famous feather cloak gifted by the Hawai’ian monarch Kamehameha III to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. During the second circumnavigation, gifts from the Prussian king were transported back to Hawai’i. The Princess Louise also brought everyday objects such as clothing, weapons, baskets, clay vessels and fans from the South Seas and South America to Europe. Ethnographic objects of the past can pose questions to the present, not least with and through contemporary art.

N2  - In 2022, India captured global attention over its response to the war in Ukraine. While calling for both parties' return to diplomacy, India abstained from several United Nations resolutions condemning Russian aggression. For a country that ostensibly subscribes to the values of democracy and territorial integrity, its response appeared frustrating and contradictory, but it is broadly consistent with its long-standing policy of non-alignment. Although India's relationship with China is increasingly contentious, New Delhi is not yet fully convinced that it is in India's interest to swing westwards. The country's relations with Russia and China are deep, complex and substantive. In addition to the military and economic benefits it derives from its connection with Russia, New Delhi and Moscow share an avowed preference for a more equal, multipolar world. India will eventually have to reflect on the extent to which it can sustain its balancing act.

implementation of the so-called final solution to the Jewish question. The understanding reached during the course of the ninety-minute meeting cleared the way for the Europe-wide killing of six million Jews. The article sets out to answer the principal challenge facing
anyone attempting to recreate the Wannsee Conference on film: what was the atmosphere of this conference and the attitude of the participants? Moreover, it discusses various ethical aspects related to the portrayal of evil, not in actions but in words, using the medium of film. In doing so, it focuses on the BBC/HBO television film Conspiracy (2001), directed by Frank Pierson, probing its historical accuracy and discussing its artistic credibility.

For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe. Combining the full quantitative scale of the killings with the individual horror, this is a vital and groundbreaking work.

Die Praxis der Kriegführung und die damit verbundenen Diskurse von Patriotismus und Nationalismus standen jedoch in erheblicher Spannung zu wichtigen Epochensignaturen der Aufklärung, darunter z. B. Naturrecht, Vernunft- und Geschichtsoptimismus, Toleranz und Kosmopolitismus. Die Phänomene ›Krieg‹ und ›Frieden‹ werden hier als Anlässe und Ergebnisse von kultureller Sinnstiftung mit ihren charakteristischen Brüchen und Verwerfungen wissenschaftlich verhandelt. Im Zentrum stehen vielfältige Repräsentationen und Inszenierungen, Erinnerungen und Rituale sowie auch Interpretationen und Rhetoriken von Krieg und Frieden unter aufklärerischen Vorzeichen. Der Band ist hervorgegangen aus der Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für die Erforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts (DGEJ) im Jahr 2012. Beigetragen haben sowohl nationale als auch internationale Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus der Literatur- und Geschichtswissenschaft sowie aus der Philosophie, der Theologie, der Medizin, dem Völkerrecht und der Musikwissenschaft mit einschlägigen Fallstudien zu verschiedenen Bereichen der Hoch- und Alltagskultur.
