N2  - Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is responsible for a public health burden with multi-systemic complications. Through transancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and independent replication (n = 1,046,070), we identified 264 associated loci (166 new). Of these,147 were likely to be relevant for kidney function on the basis of associations with the alternative kidney function marker blood urea nitrogen (n = 416,178). Pathway and enrichment analyses, including mouse models with renal phenotypes, support the kidney as the main target organ. A genetic risk score for lower eGFR was associated with clinically diagnosed CKD in 452,264 independent individuals. Colocalization analyses of associations with eGFR among 783,978 European-ancestry individuals and gene expression across 46 human tissues, including tubulo-interstitial and glomerular kidney compartments, identified 17 genes differentially expressed in kidney. Fine-mapping highlighted missense driver variants in 11 genes and kidney-specific regulatory variants. These results provide a comprehensive priority list of molecular targets for translational research.

N2  - Background and objective Whether treatment with vitamin D receptor activators contributes to cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease is a matter of debate. We studied mechanisms involved in vitamin D-related vascular calcifications in vivo and in vitro.
 Methods Aortic calcifications were induced in subtotally nephrectomized (SNX) rats by treatment with a high dose (0.25 mu g/kg per day) of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-3 (calcitriol) given for 6 weeks. Likewise, primary rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) were incubated with calcitriol at concentrations ranging from 10(-11) to 10(-7) mol/l. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the aortic expression of osteopontin, osteocalcin and bone sialoprotein was significantly increased in calcitriol-treated SNX rats compared to untreated SNX controls. In addition, aortic expression of the transient receptor potential vanilloid calcium channel 6 (TRPV6) and calbindin D9k was significantly up-regulated by treatment with calcitriol. Furthermore, calcitriol significantly increased expression of the osteogenic transcription factor osterix. In-vitro studies showed similar results, confirming that these effects could be attributed to treatment with calcitriol.
 Conclusions High-dose calcitriol treatment induces an osteoblastic phenotype in VSMC both in SNX rats and in vitro, associated with up-regulation of proteins regulating mineralization and calcium transport, and of the osteogenic transcription factor osterix.

N2  - Das Heft dokumentiert die siebte Konferenz des Forschungskreises Vereinte Nationen, die am 23. und 24. Juni 2006 an der Universität Potsdam stattfand. Unter dem Titel „Ein Jahr nach dem UN-Weltgipfel 2005 – Eine Bilanz der Reformbemühungen “ widmete sich die Konferenz wichtigen strukturellen Fragen und nahm einzelne Tätigkeitsfelder der Weltorganisation in den Blick. Die aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und aus Wissenschaft und Praxis kommenden Referentinnen und Referenten ziehen in den Referaten eine kritische Bilanz und untersuchen, was den Erklärungen des feierlichen Weltgipfels vom September 2005 an konkreten Reformschritten gefolgt ist. In für die „Potsdamer UNO-Konferenzen“ typischer Weise wird allen Interessierten die Möglichkeit gegeben, wichtige Aspekte der aktuellen Diskussion kennenzulernen, welche vor allem die Reform der UN-Hauptorgane, Reformen im Entwicklungssystem der Vereinten Nationen und im Bereich der Überwachung von Menschenrechtsverträgen betreffen sowie Fragen der Friedenssicherung und die Beteiligung von Zivilgesellschaft und Parlamentariern. Außerdem würdigt die Broschüre schweizerische Reforminitiativen in den UN und dokumentiert die aktuelle Diskussion über die deutschsprachige UN-Forschung.

N2  - Die Beliebtheit von Medienberufen ist ungebrochen. Das zeigt sich unter anderem an der Zahl der Studieninteressierten. So haben sich allein in diesem Jahr mehr als 1 500 junge Leute auf einen der 44 Plätze für den Studiengang Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Potsdam beworben. Nach ihrem erfolgreichen Abschluss allerdings konkurrieren die Absolventen am Arbeitsmarkt mit Tausenden Abgängern anderer Hochschulen aus Film-, Medien- und Kommunikationsstudiengängen. Das sind allein in der Region Berlin-Brandenburg jährlich etwa 1 500. Doch nach jahrzehntelangem Boom der Medienbranche hat sich der Arbeitsmarkt im vergangenen Jahrzehnt drastisch verändert. Konjunkturkrise, Kursrückgänge und rückläufige Werbeinvestitionen schwächten die Medien deutlich. Es folgten daraus schlechte Gewinnergebnisse, Einsparungen und Personalreduzierung, insbesondere bei den Printmedien. Die Insolvenz der Frankfurter Rundschau oder die Einstellung der Financial Times Deutschland sind nur zwei eklatante Beispiele. Auf der anderen Seite boomt der dynamische Online-Markt aufgrund des veränderten Nutzerverhaltens insbesondere der jungen Generation, die ihre Informationen zunehmend aus Internet, Apps und sozialen Netzwerken gewinnen. Die Berufsaussichten für all Jene, die „Irgendwas mit Medien“ studieren wollen sind zwar aufgrund des Arbeitsmarktes schwieriger geworden, sie sind aber dennoch vielfältig. Guter Journalismus wird weiterhin benötigt und auch Öffentlichkeitsarbeiter sind gefragt. Darüber hinaus stehen Absolveninspiriert von den Fernsehbildern, als Tausende Flüchtlinge herzlich in München empfangen wurden, kam unserem Kollegen Eric Makswitat die Idee, sich auch auf lokaler Ebene für die hier ankommenden Flüchtlinge zu engagieren. Der Doktorand in der Politikwissenschaft sammelt über das Internet Bücher für Flüchtlinge und gibt sie dann direkt in den Flüchtlingsunterkünften ab. Eric Makswitat ist einer von Vielen, die derzeit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Bewältigung der Herausforderungen des Flüchtlingszustroms nach Deutschland leisten. Die engagierten Helfer sind „ein Beweis dafür, wie weit die Selbstorganisationskräfte der organisierten Bürgerschaft in unserer Zivilgesellschaft mittlerweile entwickelt sind“, meint dazu der Verwaltungswissenschaftler Jochen Franzke. Unser Kollege Eric ist auch in anderer Hinsicht beispielgebend. Er ist einer von rund achtzig Prozent aller ehemaligen Studierenden, die nach dem Studienabschluss in der Region bleiben, wie eine kürzlich an der Uni veröffentlichte Studie zum Verbleib unserer Absolventinnen und Absolventen ermittelt hat. Unsere Alumni steigen ein in Berufsfeldern der Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, sie gründen Firmen und sie engagieren sich beruflich, privat oder gesellschaftlich. Viele davon in Potsdam. Wenn die Universität Potsdam im nächsten Jahr ihr 25-jähriges Jubiläum in und mit der Stadt Potsdam feiern wird und mit Stolz auf hervorragende Leistungen aus Lehre und Forschung verweist, dann ist dies nicht zuletzt den Absolventinnen und Absolventen zu verdanken, die als hochqualifizierte Fachkräfte neueste wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse in die Praxis überführen. Portal alumni ist deshalb in diesem Jahr hier, zu Hause in Potsdam geblieben. Wir haben Absolventen der Universität Potsdam gesucht, die heute in unterschiedlichen beruflichen und gesellschaftlichen Kontexten in der Region aktiv sind und sich engagieren.

N2  - Vertical flow filters and vertical flow constructed wetlands are established wastewater treatment systems and have also been proposed for the treatment of contaminated groundwater. This study investigates the removal processes of volatile organic compounds in a pilot-scale vertical flow filter. The filter is intermittently irrigated with contaminated groundwater containing benzene, MTBE and ammonium as the main contaminants. The system is characterized by unsaturated conditions and high contaminant removal efficiency. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the contribution of biodegradation and volatilization to the overall removal of benzene and MTBE. Tracer tests and flow rate measurements showed a highly transient flow and heterogeneous transport regime. Radon-222, naturally occurring in the treated groundwater, was used as a gas tracer and indicated a high volatilization potential. Radon-222 behavior was reproduced by numerical simulations and extrapolated for benzene and MTBE, and indicated these compounds also have a high volatilization potential. In contrast, passive sampler measurements on top of the filter detected only low benzene and MTBE concentrations. Biodegradation potential was evaluated by the analysis of catabolic genes involved in organic compound degradation and a quantitative estimation of biodegradation was derived from stable isotope fractionation analysis. Results suggest that despite the high volatilization potential, biodegradation is the predominant mass removal process in the filter system, which indicates that the volatilized fraction of the contaminants is still subject to subsequent biodegradation. In particular, the upper filter layer located between the injection tubes and the surface of the system might also contribute to biodegradation, and might play a crucial role in avoiding the emission of volatilized contaminants into the atmosphere.

N2  - Tula virus (TULV) is a vole-associated hantavirus with low or no pathogenicity to humans. In the present study, 686 common voles (Microtus arvalis), 249 field voles (Microtus agrestis) and 30 water voles (Arvicola spec.) were collected at 79 sites in Germany, Luxembourg and France and screened by RT-PCR and TULV-IgG ELISA. TULV-specific RNA and/or antibodies were detected at 43 of the sites, demonstrating a geographically widespread distribution of the virus in the studied area. The TULV prevalence in common voles (16.7 %) was higher than that in field voles (9.2 %) and water voles (10.0 %). Time series data at ten trapping sites showed evidence of a lasting presence of TULV RNA within common vole populations for up to 34 months, although usually at low prevalence. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a strong genetic structuring of TULV sequences according to geography and independent of the rodent species, confirming the common vole as the preferential host, with spillover infections to co-occurring field and water voles. TULV phylogenetic clades showed a general association with evolutionary lineages in the common vole as assessed by mitochondrial DNA sequences on a large geographical scale, but with local-scale discrepancies in the contact areas.

Herbsttreffen Patholinguistik mit dem Schwerpunktthema »Interdisziplinär (be-)handeln – Multiprofessionelle Zusammenarbeit in der Sprachtherapie« fand am 20.11.2021 als Online-Veranstaltung statt. Das Herbsttreffen wird seit 2007 jährlich vom Verband für Patholinguistik e.V. (vpl), seit 2021 vom Deutschen Bundesverband für akademische Sprachtherapie und Logopädie (dbs) in Kooperation mit der Universität Potsdam durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Tagungsband beinhaltet die Vorträge zum Schwerpunktthema und Informationen aus der Podiumsdiskussion sowie die Posterpräsentationen zu weiteren Themen aus der sprachtherapeutischen Forschung und Praxis.
N2  - The Fifteenth Autumn Meeting Patholinguistics with its main topic »Interdisciplinary treatment - multiprofessional cooperation in speech/language therapy« took place online on the 20th of November 2021. This annual meeting has been organised since 2007 by the Association for Patholinguistics (vpl), since 2021 by the German Federal Association for Academic Speech/Language Therapy and Logopaedics (dbs) in cooperation with the University of Potsdam. The present proceedings feature the keynote presentations on the main topic and information from the panel discussion as well as articles from the poster session covering a broad range of areas in research and practice of speech/language therapy.

N2  - The “HPI Future SOC Lab” is a cooperation of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and industry partners. Its mission is to enable and promote exchange and interaction between the research community and the industry partners.
  The HPI Future SOC Lab provides researchers with free of charge access to a complete infrastructure of state of the art hard and software. This infrastructure includes components, which might be too expensive for an ordinary research environment, such as servers with up to 64 cores and 2 TB main memory. The offerings address researchers particularly from but not limited to the areas of computer science and business information systems. Main areas of research include cloud computing, parallelization, and In-Memory technologies.
  This technical report presents results of research projects executed in 2018. Selected projects have presented their results on April 17th and November 14th 2017 at the Future SOC Lab Day events.
N2  - Das Future SOC Lab am HPI ist eine Kooperation des Hasso-Plattner-Instituts mit verschiedenen Industriepartnern. Seine Aufgabe ist die Ermöglichung und Förderung des Austausches zwischen Forschungsgemeinschaft und Industrie.
  Am Lab wird interessierten Wissenschaftler:innen eine Infrastruktur von neuester Hard- und Software kostenfrei für Forschungszwecke zur Verfügung gestellt. Dazu zählen Systeme, die im normalen Hochschulbereich in der Regel nicht zu finanzieren wären, bspw. Server mit bis zu 64 Cores und 2 TB Hauptspeicher. Diese Angebote richten sich insbesondere an Wissenschaftler:innen in den Gebieten Informatik und Wirtschaftsinformatik. Einige der Schwerpunkte sind Cloud Computing, Parallelisierung und In-Memory Technologien. 
  In diesem Technischen Bericht werden die Ergebnisse der Forschungsprojekte des Jahres 2018 vorgestellt.  Ausgewählte Projekte stellten ihre Ergebnisse am 17. April und 14. November 2018 im Rahmen des Future SOC Lab Tags vor.
