N2  - This study examines the role of the lexicon and grammatical structure building in early grammar. Parent-report data in CDI format from a sample of 1151 German-speaking children between 1;6 and 2;6 and longitudinal spontaneous speech data from 22 children between 1;8 and 2;5 were used. Regression analysis of the parent-report data indicates that grammatical words have a stronger influence on concurrent syntactic complexity than lexical words. Time-lagged correlations using the spontaneous speech data showed that lexical words at 1;8 predict subsequent MLU at 2;1 significantly; grammatical words do not. MLU at 2;5 is significantly predicted by grammatical words and no longer by lexical words. The influence of different grammatical subcategories on subsequent MLU varies. Use of articles and the copula at 2;1 most strongly predicts MLU at 2;5. Children use both types of articles and multiple determiners before a noun to the same extent as adults. The present results are suggestive of early grammatical structure building.

N2  - FRAKIS (Fragebogen zur frühkindlichen Sprachentwicklung) ist ein Elternfragenbogen zur Erfassung des Sprachstandes bei deutsch-sprachigen Kindern zwischen 18 und 30 Monaten und die deutsche Adaptation des MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory for Toddlers. Es gibt eine Langform (FRAKIS) und Kurzform (FRAKIS-K). Der lange Fragebogen enthält eine Wortliste von 600 Wörtern und Skalen zur Flexionsmorphologie und Syntax, die Kurzform eine Wortschatzliste von 102 Wörtern und drei Fragen zur Grammatik. Beide Fragebögen sind an einer Stichprobe von 1240 Kindern normiert. Die Normierungsstudie wird im Manual dargestellt. Normen werden in monatlichen Altersgruppen für Mädchen und Jungen getrennt, und für alle Kinder angegeben. Mit FRAKIS und FRAKIS-K stehen im deutschsprachigen Bereich erstmals Elternfragebögen zur Verfügung, die auf empirisch gesicherten, strengen Normierungsverfahren beruhen. Die Normwerte bringen ein Bezugssystem für das Ausmaß an Variabilität im frühen Spracherwerb. FRAKIS-K ist geeignet für die Sprachstandsbestimmung im Rahmen der kinderärztlichen Vorsorgeuntersuchungen. Kinder mit spätem oder verzögertem Sprachbeginn können identifiziert werden. Darüber hinaus sind die Fragebögen geeignet für eine Verlaufsbeobachtung der frühen Sprachentwicklung, ob in Forschung oder Praxis.
N2  - FRAKIS (Fragebogen zur frühkindlichen Sprachentwicklung) is a parental questionnaire for assessing language development in German-speaking children aged between 18 and 30 months and the German adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory for Toddlers. A long version (FRAKIS) and a short version (FRAKIS-K) are available. The long version contains a list of 600 words and scales for assessing inflectional morphology and syntax. The short version has a list of 102 words and three questions about grammar. Both questionnaires have been normed on a sample of 1240 children. The norming study is presented in the Manual. Norms are given per monthly age group, for girls and boys separately, and for all children. FRAKIS und FRAKIS-K are the first parental questionnaires for German-speaking children which are based on rigorous and reliable empirical methodology. The age norms present a frame of reference for the extent of variability in early language development. FRAKIS-K is well suited for use in paediatric developmental checks. It allows identifying children with late language emergence. Both questionnaires can be used for developmental surveillance, whether in research or practical application.
