TY - THES A1 - Esther, Alexandra T1 - Modellgestützte Untersuchungen zum Überleben einer Steinkauzpopulation (Athene noctua) in Thüringen T1 - Modelling study of a Little Owl (Athene noctua) population in Thuringia, Germany N2 - Der Rückgang des Steinkauzes (Athene noctua) hat in Thüringen und Sachsen seit den 60er Jahren dramatische Ausmaße angenommen. In den 50er Jahren noch flächendeckend beobachtet, wurden für das Jahr 2000 nur noch 18 Individuen durch Bestandserfassungen registriert. Die vielfach diskutierten Rückgangsursachen beziehen sich vor Allem auf die großflächige Änderung der Landschaftsstrukturen, die zum Verlust der Lebensgrundlagen des Steinkauzes führten. So haben u.a. der Verlust an Brut- und Vorratshöhlen und an ganzjährig kurzgehaltenen Grünlandflächen, sowie der zunehmende Einfluss von Prädatoren erheblich zum Rückgang beigetragen. Eingeleitete Schutzmaßnahmen, ehrenamtlich oder auf dem allgemeinen Naturschutzprogramm des Freistaates Thüringen beruhend, wie das Anbringen von Nisthilfen mit Marderschutz oder Pflegeverträge für Streuobstwiesen, zeigen bisher keine sichtbare Wirkung. Als weitergehende Maßnahmen stehen die Reduzierung von Füchsen (Vulpes vulpes) und Steinmardern (Martes foina), Ausbreitungskorridore für Steinkäuze und ein Auswilderungsprogramm zur Diskussion. Angesichts des Populationsrückgangs des Steinkauz war es Aufgabe dieser Arbeit durch ein Simulationsmodell Untersuchungen zum Überleben einer Steinkauzpopulation (Athene noctua) in Thüringen durchzuführen. Die zusammengetragenen Bestandszahlen ergaben geringe Individuenzahlen in den thüringischen Landkreisen Altenburger Land, Greiz und der Stadt Gera sowie in den sächsischen Landkreisen Chemnitzer Land und Mittweida. Die Bestandszahlen der Jahre 1989-2001, sowie weitere der Literatur entnommene Daten zum populationsökologischen Hintergrund, wie auch Analysen des Gebietes in Thüringen und Sachsen und dessen besetzter Reviere der Jahre 1989- 2001, wurden in ein stochastisches, räumlich-explizites, auf Individuen basierendes Simulationsmodell eingebracht. Es wurde eine Sensitivitätsanalyse durchgeführt, die beruhend auf den erfassten Populationsentwicklungen in Thüringen und Sachsen und auf Literaturangaben, ausgewählte Parameterkonstellationen für die Untersuchungenergab. Die Untersuchungen zum Überleben vor dem Hintergrund möglicher Gefährdungsfaktoren und zur Ermittelung des Nutzens von Managementoptionen, wurden mit Schwerpunkten auf „Prädation“, „Habitatverbesserung“ und „Auswilderung“ durchgeführt. Als Ergebnis der Simulationen kam heraus, dass die Prädation keinen großen Einfluss auf das Überleben der Population hat, und Schutzmaßnahmen die Chancen für das Überleben der Population nicht erhöhen würden. Habitatverbesserungen, die die Juvenilen animieren sich im Umkreis von bis zu 5 km vom elterlichen Revier anzusiedeln, würden aber deutlich zum Überleben der Population, auch in längerfristiger Perspektive, beitragen. Habitatverbesserungen, die zu weiter entfernteren Ansiedlungen animieren, könnten sich dagegen ungünstig auf das Überleben der Population auswirken. Für eine mögliche Auswilderung als Schutzmaßnahme ergab sich im Modell, dass eine Auswilderung von 5 Individuen pro Jahr über einen Zeitraum von 5 Jahren, die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit kurzfristig deutlich verbessern würde. Es ergab sich allerdings kein Unterschied, ob 5, 10 oder 15 Individuen ausgewildert werden. Eine länger durchgeführte Auswilderung würde vermutlich die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit entsprechend langfristiger verbessern. The simulation tool called 'TRAM' is intended to complement mesoscale eco-hydrological catchment models in studies on river basin management. TRAM aims at describing the water quality of individual water bodies, using problem- and scale-adequate approaches for representing their hydrological and ecological characteristics. The need for such flexible water quality analysis and prediction tools is expected to further increase during the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) as well as in the context of climate change research. The developed simulation tool consists of a transport and a reaction module with the latter being highly flexible with respect to the description of turnover processes in the aquatic environment. Therefore, simulation approaches of different complexity can easily be tested and model formulations can be chosen in consideration of the problem at hand, knowledge of process functioning, and data availability. Consequently, TRAM is suitable for both heavily simplified engineering applications as well as scientific ecosystem studies involving a large number of state variables, interactions, and boundary conditions. TRAM can easily be linked to catchment models off-line and it requires the use of external hydrodynamic simulation software. Parametrization of the model and visualization of simulation results are facilitated by the use of geographical information systems as well as specific pre- and post-processors. TRAM has been developed within the research project 'Management Options for the Havel River Basin' funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research. The project focused on the analysis of different options for reducing the nutrient load of surface waters. It was intended to support the implementation of the WFD in the lowland catchment of the Havel River located in North-East Germany. Within the above-mentioned study TRAM was applied with two goals in mind. In a first step, the model was used for identifying the magnitude as well as spatial and temporal patterns of nitrogen retention and sediment phosphorus release in a 100~km stretch of the highly eutrophic Lower Havel River. From the system analysis, strongly simplified conceptual approaches for modeling N-retention and P-remobilization in the studied river-lake system were obtained. In a second step, the impact of reduced external nutrient loading on the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of the Havel River was simulated (scenario analysis) taking into account internal retention/release. The boundary conditions for the scenario analysis such as runoff and nutrient emissions from river basins were computed by project partners using the catchment models SWIM and ArcEGMO-Urban. Based on the output of TRAM, the considered options of emission control could finally be evaluated using a site-specific assessment scale which is compatible with the requirements of the WFD. Uncertainties in the model predictions were also examined. According to simulation results, the target of the WFD -- with respect to total phosphorus concentrations in the Lower Havel River -- could be achieved in the medium-term, if the full potential for reducing point and non-point emissions was tapped. Furthermore, model results suggest that internal phosphorus loading will ease off noticeably until 2015 due to a declining pool of sedimentary mobile phosphate. Mass balance calculations revealed that the lakes of the Lower Havel River are an important nitrogen sink. This natural retention effect contributes significantly to the efforts aimed at reducing the river's nitrogen load. If a sustainable improvement of the river system's water quality is to be achieved, enhanced measures to further reduce the immissions of both phosphorus and nitrogen are required. N2 - Die vorliegende Arbeit dokumentiert Konzept und Anwendung eines Modells zur Simulation von Stofftransport und -umsatz in Flüssen und Flachseen. Das Simulationswerkzeug TRAM wurde als Ergänzung zu mesoskaligen Wasser- und Stoffhaushaltsmodellen konzipiert, um die Beschaffenheit einzelner Wasserkörper auf dieser räumlichen Skala in adequater Weise abbilden zu können. Dieser Aufgabenstellung kommt im Zuge der Umsetzung der EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie (WRRL) besondere Bedeutung zu. Das entwickelte Simulationsmodell TRAM setzt sich aus einem Transport- und einem Reaktionsmodell zusammen. Letzteres zeichnet sich durch eine hohe Flexibilität hinsichtlich der Beschreibung gewässerinterner Stoffumsatzprozesse aus. Es können mit geringem Aufwand unterschiedlich komplexe Ansätze der Prozessbeschreibung getestet und die - je nach Problemstellung, Systemverständnis und Datenverfügbarkeit - angemessene Modellformulierung gewählt werden. TRAM eignet sich somit gleichermaßen für stark vereinfachende Ingenieur-Anwendungen wie für wissenschaftliche Analysen, die komplexe aquatische Ökosystemmodelle mit einer Vielzahl an Zustandsvariablen, Interaktionen und Randbedingungen erfordern. Weitere Charakteristika von TRAM sind die Koppelbarkeit mit öko-hydrologischen Einzugsgebietsmodellen sowie einem hydrodynamischen Modell, die Unterstützung von Modellparametrisierung und Visualisierungen durch Geografische Informationssysteme (GIS) und ein klar strukturiertes Daten-Management. TRAM wurde im Rahmen des BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekts 'Bewirtschaftungsmöglichkeiten im Einzugsgebiet der Havel' entwickelt. Gegenstand dieses Projektes war die Analyse von Handlungsoptionen zur Verminderung von Nährstoffeinträgen in die Oberflächengewässer des Havel-Einzugsgebiets als Beitrag zur Erreichung der Ziele der WRRL. Mit dem Einsatz von TRAM wurden zwei Zielstellungen verfolgt: In einem ersten Schritt wurden Bedeutung und Muster der gewässerinternen Stickstoff-Retention sowie der Phosphor-Freisetzung aus See-Sedimenten quantifiziert (Systemanalyse). Auf dieser Basis konnten vereinfachte, konzeptionelle Ansätze zur Beschreibung von N-Retention und P-Remobilisierung abgeleitet werden. In einem zweiten Schritt wurden, unter Nutzung dieser Ansätze, die Auswirkungen verringerter externer Nährstoffeinträge auf gewässerinterne N- und P-Konzentrationen simuliert (Szenario-Analysen) und die Unsicherheiten der Modellrechnungen untersucht. Als Randbedingungen für die Szenario-Analysen dienten Simulationsergebnisse der öko-hydrologischen Einzugsgebietsmodelle SWIM und ArcEGMO, welche durch Projektpartner zur Verfügung gestellt wurden. Die mittels TRAM berechneten Nährstoffkonzentrationen bildeten schließlich die Grundlage für eine Evaluierung der Handlungsoptionen anhand einer gewässertypspezifischen, WRRL-konformen Bewertungsskala. Die Simulationsergebnisse zeigen, dass die Zielvorgabe der WRRL bezüglich Gesamt-Phosphor im Falle der Unteren Havel mittelfristig erreicht werden kann, wenn das Potential zur Senkung der Einträge aus punktförmigen und diffusen Quellen voll ausgeschöpft wird. Weiterhin kann im Zeitraum bis 2015 bereits mit einem merklichen Nachlassen der internen Phosphat-Freisetzung aufgrund einer Aushagerung der Sedimente gerechnet werden. Mit Hilfe von Massenbilanzierungen ließ sich zeigen, dass die Havelseen eine bedeutende Stickstoff-Senke darstellen. Dieser natürliche Retentionseffekt unterstützt wesentlich die Bemühungen zur Verminderung der Stickstoff-Belastung. Im Sinne einer nachhaltigen Verbesserung der Wassergüte der Unteren Havel erscheinen verstärkte Anstrengungen zur weiteren Reduzierung sowohl der Phosphor- als auch der Stickstoff-Emissionen geboten. Der Ruf nach einer strategischen nicht nur taktischen Ausrichtung der politischen Planung und Steuerung wird laut. Die Restriktionen der politischen Rationalität können nicht als Hinderungsgrund für die stärkere Strategieausprägung von Regierungspolitik angesehen werden, vielmehr ist der Strategiefaktor in der Politik auszubauen. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt die Balanced Scorecard (BSC) als strategisches Managementinstrument zur Verbesserung der strategischen Planung und Steuerung der Vorhaben einer Landesregierung an der Schnittstelle zwischen Landesregierung und Ministerialverwaltung in den Fokus der Betrachtung. Entscheidend für die Anwendung eines für die Privatwirtschaft entwickelten Instruments ist dessen Anpassbarkeit an spezifische Kriterien, die sich im Kontext einer Landesregierung und deren -verwaltung ergeben. Diese qualitativen Kriterien werden mithilfe einer Matrix ermittelt. In dieser stehen sich die essenziellen Funktionen einer BSC und die Herausforderungen der BSC im Kontext einer Landesregierung gegenüber. Der empirische Teil der Arbeit stellt die BSC-Bestrebungen des Landes Brandenburg vor und analysiert diese anhand der abgeleiteten qualitativen Kriterien. Im Ergebnis der Fallstudie stellt sich vor allem die Führungsunterstützung als der erfolgsentscheidende Faktor der BSC-Konzeption und -Implementierung innerhalb der Landesregierung Brandenburg heraus. Daneben sind die Formulierung und Ableitung klarer Strategien und Ziele durch die Regierenden, die Beachtung personeller Aspekte sowie eine ausgefeilte Projektorganisation von entscheidender Bedeutung für den Erfolg der BSC. A strategic instead of a tactical approach of political planning and steering is the main request. Politics have their own rationality but this should not be a restriction to avoid a stronger emphasis of strategic policy. The strategic side of policy should rather be expanded. The following thesis tries to enhance the process of strategic planning and steering of Laender by adopting the strategic management instrument balanced scorecard at the intersection between government and administration. The balanced scorecard is a management instrument of the private sector. Therefore the balanced scorecard has to be aligned at specific criteria of the public sector especially in the context of a Laender government. The specific qualitative criteria are identified by means of a matrix. The empirical part introduces and analysis the balanced scorecard concept and the implementation strategy of the federal state of Brandenburg on the basis of the qualitative criteria. The success factors in the case study are promotion by leadership, formulation of precise strategies and objectives by politicians, attention of personnel aspects and a sophisticated organisation of balanced scorecard implementation projects. We identify two challenges for making further progress in this field. One such challenge is to avoid developing more models largely following the concept of others ('reinventing the wheel'). The other challenge is to avoid focusing on only one type of model, while ignoring new and diverse approaches that have become available ('having tunnel vision'). In this paper, we aim at improving the awareness of existing models and knowledge of concurrent approaches in lake ecosystem modelling, without covering all possible model tools and avenues. First, we present a broad variety of modelling approaches. To illustrate these approaches, we give brief descriptions of rather arbitrarily selected sets of specific models. We deal with static models (steady state and regression models), complex dynamic models (CAEDYM, CE-QUAL-W2, Delft 3D-ECO, LakeMab, LakeWeb, MyLake, PCLake, PROTECH, SALMO), structurally dynamic models and minimal dynamic models. We also discuss a group of approaches that could all be classified as individual based: super-individual models (Piscator, Charisma), physiologically structured models, stage-structured models and traitbased models. We briefly mention genetic algorithms, neural networks, Kalman filters and fuzzy logic. Thereafter, we zoom in, as an in-depth example, on the multi-decadal development and application of the lake ecosystem model PCLake and related models (PCLake Metamodel, Lake Shira Model, IPH-TRIM3D-PCLake). In the discussion, we argue that while the historical development of each approach and model is understandable given its 'leading principle', there are many opportunities for combining approaches. We take the point of view that a single 'right' approach does not exist and should not be strived for. Instead, multiple modelling approaches, applied concurrently to a given problem, can help develop an integrative view on the functioning of lake ecosystems. We end with a set of specific recommendations that may be of help in the further development of lake ecosystem models. This article reflects the attitudes towards different managed forests on the one hand and their influence on psychological well-being on the other. Results of empirical approaches from both fields show some inconsistency, suggesting that people have a more positive attitude towards wild forest areas, while the effect on well-being is more positive after a walk in tended forest areas. A discussion follows on the link between perception and the effect of urban forests. An outlook on necessary research reveals the need for longitudinal research. Following Mintzberg’s approach of management research, we posed the question, “What do public managers really do?” when it comes to managing their organizations. Intensification and/or expansion of agriculture are the two main options available to meet the growing crop demands. Land conversion to expand cultivated land increases GHG emissions and impacts biodiversity and ecosystem services. Closing yield gaps to attain potential yields may be a viable option to increase the global crop production. Traditional methods of agricultural intensification often have negative externalities. Therefore, there is a need to explore location-specific methods of sustainable agricultural intensification. We identified regions where the achievement of potential crop calorie production on currently cultivated land will meet the present and future food demand based on scenario analyses considering population growth and changes in dietary habits. By closing yield gaps in the current irrigated and rain-fed cultivated land, about 24% and 80% more crop calories can respectively be produced compared to 2000. Most countries will reach food self-sufficiency or improve their current food self-sufficiency levels if potential crop production levels are achieved. As a novel approach, we defined specific input and agricultural management strategies required to achieve the potential production by overcoming biophysical and socioeconomic constraints causing yield gaps. The management strategies include: fertilizers, pesticides, advanced soil management, land improvement, management strategies coping with weather induced yield variability, and improving market accessibility. Finally, we estimated the required fertilizers (N, P2O5, and K2O) to attain the potential yields. Globally, N-fertilizer application needs to increase by 45-73%, P2O5-fertilizer by 22-46%, and K2O-fertilizer by 2-3 times compared to the year 2010 to attain potential crop production. The sustainability of such agricultural intensification largely depends on the way management strategies for closing yield gaps are chosen and implemented. The study proceeds in six parts: (1) design thinking¹s entry points into organizations; (2) understandings of the descriptor; (3) its fields of application and organizational localization; (4) its perceived impact; (5) reasons for its discontinuation or failure; and (6) attempts to measure its success. In conclusion the report challenges managers to be more conscious of their current design thinking practice. The authors suggest a co-evolution of the concept¹s introduction with innovation capability building and the respective changes in leadership approaches. Während viele Forscher Ausgliederungen in Form von nachgeordneten Behörden auf Bundesebene untersuchen und diese Reformwelle als einen faktischen Autonomisierungsprozess beschreiben, gibt es nur einige wenige Studien, die sich explizit mit den Autonomisierungstendenzen auf Kommunalebene auseinandersetzen. Daher fehlt es an empirischen Erkenntnissen zur Steuerung der kommunalen Beteiligungen. In dieser Arbeit werden die Steuerungsarrangements deutscher Großstädte erstmals aus Sicht der Gesteuerten beleuchtet. Das Untersuchungsziel der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit besteht darin, Flexibilisierungstendenzen in mehrheitlich kommunalen Unternehmen zu identifizieren und hierfür Erklärungsfaktoren zu identifizieren. Die Forschungsfrage lautet: Welche instrumentellen und relationalen Faktoren beeinflussen die Managementautonomie in kommunalen Mehrheitsbeteiligungen? Dabei interessiert insbesondere die Einflussnahme der Kommunen auf verschiedene Tätigkeitsbereiche ihrer Ausgliederungen. Über diese unternehmensspezifischen Sachverhalte ist in Deutschland fast nichts und international nur sehr wenig Empirisches bekannt. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage hat der Autor auf Basis der Transaktionskosten- und der Social-Exchange-Theorie einen Analyserahmen erstellt. Die aufgestellten Hypothesen wurden mit einer großflächigen Umfrage bei 243 Unternehmen in den 39 größten deutschen Städten empirisch getestet. Im Ergebnis zeigen sich mehrere empirische Erkenntnisse: Erstens konnten mittels Faktorenanalyse vier unabhängige Faktoren von Managementautonomie in kommunalen Unternehmen identifiziert werden: Personalautonomie, Generelles Management, Preisautonomie und Strategische Fragen. Während die Kommunen ihren Beteiligungen einen hohen Grad an Personalautonomie zugestehen, unterliegen vor allem strategische Investitionsentscheidungen wie die finanzielle Beteiligung an Tochterfirmen, große Projektvorhaben, Diversifikationsentscheidungen oder Kreditautfnahmen einem starken politischen Einfluss. Zweitens führt eine Rechtsformänderung und die Platzierung in einem Wettbewerbsumfeld (auch bekannt als Corporatisation) vor allem zu einer größeren Flexibilisierung der Personal- und Preispolitik, wirkt sich allerdings wenig auf die weiteren Faktoren der Managementautonomie, Generelles Management und Strategische Entscheidungen, aus. Somit behalten die Kommunen ihre Möglichkeit, auf wichtige Unternehmensfragen der Beteiligung Einfluss zu nehmen, auch im Fall einer Formalprivatisierung bei. Letztlich können zur Erklärung der Autonomiefaktoren transaktionskostenbasierte und relationale Faktoren ergänzend herangezogen werden. In den Transaktionsspezifika wirken vor allem der wahrgenommene Wettbewerb in der Branche, die Messbarkeit der Leistung, Branchenvariablen, die Anzahl der Politiker im Aufsichtsrat und die eingesetzten Steuerungsmechanismen. In den relationalen Faktoren setzen sich die Variablen gegenseitiges Vertrauen, Effektivität der Aufsichtsräte, Informationsaustausch, Rollenkonflikte, Rollenambivalenzen und Geschäftsführererfahrung im Sektor durch. N2 - Striving for efficiency and budget improvements, governments at local, state or federal level in most OECD countries have been delegating service provision to private and nonprofit organizations. On the local level, new types of state owned enterprises operate as private law entities and have become equivalent competitors in increasingly demanding, dynamic environments. Their establishment is commonly referred to as corporatization. So far, there is little empirical knowledge about the governance arrangements with regard to corporatization. Analysing the governance arrangements of municipalities as perceived by 243 steered organizations, the author investigates on the issue of management autonomy. Research is driven by the following research question: Which characteristics of the relationship between state owned enterprises and the government impact the level and type of management autonomy of those enterprises? Based on Transaction Cost and Social Exchange Theory, the author develops an analytical framework and formulates several hypotheses. These hypotheses are tested on a sample of 243 municipally owned enterprises in the 39 biggest German cities. The author arrives at several empirical results: Firstly, different types of autonomy are identified. An exploratory factor analysis reveals four distinct factors termed HRM, General Managerial, Pricing and Strategy Autonomy. While municipal governments concede a reasonably high amount of HRM autonomy to their enterprises, strategic decisions like diversification issues, taking loans or larger investments are subject to political influence. Secondly, corporatization which is the tranfer from public to private law fosters HRM and pricing autonomy in the German sample. However, the author does not detect any significant relationship with trategic and general managerial issues. Lastly, there is evidence for both some of the transaction cost and social exchange driven hypotheses. With regard to transaction characteristics, the study reveals that the perceived degree of competition, the measurability of output, the branch,the number of politicians in the board as well as the applied steering mechanisms covary management autonomy. While relational characteristics like information sharing, board effectiveness, role ambiguity and policy-profession conflict affect management autonomy in a negative way, mutual trust and former CEO experience in a public enterprise correlate positively. Compared to the general population, medical students are at a greater risk of developing a psychological disorder. Various attempts of stress management training in medical school have achieved positive results on minimizing psychological distress; however, there are often limitations. Therefore, the use of a rigorous scientific method is needed. The present study protocol describes a randomized controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of a specifically developed mindfulness-based stress prevention training for medical students that includes selected elements of cognitive behavioral strategies (MediMind). Methods/Design: This study protocol presents a prospective randomized controlled trial, involving four assessment time points: baseline, post-intervention, one-year follow-up and five-year follow-up. The aims include evaluating the effect on stress, coping, psychological morbidity and personality traits with validated measures. Participants are allocated randomly to one of three conditions: MediMind, Autogenic Training or control group. Eligible participants are medical or dental students in the second or eighth semester of a German university. They form a population of approximately 420 students in each academic term. A final total sample size of 126 (at five-year follow-up) is targeted. The trainings (MediMind and Autogenic Training) comprise five weekly sessions lasting 90 minutes each. MediMind will be offered to participants of the control group once the five-year follow-up is completed. The allotment is randomized with a stratified allocation ratio by course of studies, semester, and gender. After descriptive statistics have been evaluated, inferential statistical analysis will be carried out with a repeated measures ANOVA-design with interactions between time and group. Effect sizes will be calculated using partial η-square values. Discussion: Potential limitations of this study are voluntary participation and the risk of attrition, especially concerning participants that are allocated to the control group. Strengths are the study design, namely random allocation, follow-up assessment, the use of control groups and inclusion of participants at different stages of medical training with the possibility of differential analysis. In Brazil, a few modeling studies assess freshwater nutrients, limiting policies on hydrologic ecosystem services. This paper aims to compare freshwater quality scenarios under different land-use and land-cover (LULC) change, one of them related to ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), in Brazilian headwaters. Using the spatially semi-distributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, nitrate, total phosphorous (TP) and sediment were modeled in catchments ranging from 7.2 to 1037 km(2). These head-waters were eligible areas of the Brazilian payment for ecosystem services (PES) projects in the Cantareira water supply system, which had supplied water to 9 million people in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region (SPMR). We considered SWAT modeling of three LULC scenarios: (i) recent past scenario (S1), with historical LULC in 1990; (ii) current land-use scenario (S2), with LULC for the period 2010-2015 with field validation; and (iii) future land-use scenario with PES (S2 + EbA). This latter scenario proposed forest cover restoration through EbA following the river basin plan by 2035. These three LULC scenarios were tested with a selected record of rainfall and evapotranspiration observed in 2006-2014, with the occurrence of extreme droughts. To assess hydrologic services, we proposed the hydrologic service index (HSI), as a new composite metric comparing water pollution levels (WPL) for reference catchments, related to the grey water footprint (greyWF) and water yield. On the one hand, water quality simulations allowed for the regionalization of greyWF at spatial scales under LULC scenarios. According to the critical threshold, HSI identified areas as less or more sustainable catchments. On the other hand, conservation practices simulated through the S2 + EbA scenario envisaged not only additional and viable best management practices (BMP), but also preventive decision-making at the headwaters of water supply systems. Methods We conducted a formal meta-analysis of re-survey vegetation studies of semi-natural grasslands. In total, 23 data sets were compiled, spanning up to 75 years between the surveys, including 13 data sets from wet grasslands, six from dry grasslands and four from other grassland types. Edaphic conditions were assessed using mean Ellenberg indicator values for soil moisture, nitrogen and pH. Changes in species richness and environmental variables were evaluated using response ratios. Results In most wet grasslands, total species richness declined over time, while habitat specialists almost completely vanished. The number of species losses increased with increasing time between the surveys and were associated with a strong decrease in soil moisture and higher soil nutrient contents. Wet grasslands in nature reserves showed no such changes or even opposite trends. In dry grasslands and other grassland types, total species richness did not consistently change, but the number or proportions of habitat specialists declined. There were also considerable changes in species composition, especially in wet grasslands that often have been converted into intensively managed, highly productive meadows or pastures. We did not find a general homogenization of the vegetation in any of the grassland types. Conclusions The results document the widespread deterioration of semi-natural grasslands, especially of those types that can easily be transformed to high production grasslands. The main causes for the loss of grassland specialists are changed management in combination with increased fertilization and nitrogen deposition. Dry grasslands are most resistant to change, but also show a long-term trend towards an increase in more mesotrophic species. In land use management, knowing the effects of fire and grazing on biodiversity are important in order to ensure environmental sustainability. Beetles specifically are indicators of the biodiversity response to fire and grazing. A grazing exclusion and burning experiment in a split-plot design was used in order to investigate the interacting effects of fire and wildlife grazing on biomass, diversity, and species composition of darkling beetles (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) over time after fire. Darkling beetle species richness and diversity were responding in a three-way-interaction to fire, grazing, and time after fire, whereby biomass of darkling beetles remained unaffected and species compositional changes were attributed to seasonal changes of time only. Fire on ungrazed plots had a negative effect on species diversity and richness 2 weeks and 6 months post fire, whereas fire on grazed plots had no impact on species diversity and richness. Grazing only lowered species diversity and richness 6 months after fire treatments. Results suggest that grazing overrides the effects of fire and that the similar effects caused by fire and grazing are due to niche and assemblage simplification of the habitat. However, in many cases, these constraints are unknown or not documented. Detecting them manually is time-consuming and even infeasible in large-scale datasets. We study the problem of discovering primary keys and foreign keys automatically and propose an algorithm to detect both, namely Holistic Primary Key and Foreign Key Detection (HoPF). PKs and FKs are subsets of the sets of unique column combinations (UCCs) and inclusion dependencies (INDs), respectively, for which efficient discovery algorithms are known. Using score functions, our approach is able to effectively extract the true PKs and FKs from the vast sets of valid UCCs and INDs. Several pruning rules are employed to speed up the procedure. We evaluate precision and recall on three benchmarks and two real-world datasets. The results show that our method is able to retrieve on average 88% of all primary keys, and 91% of all foreign keys. We compare the performance of HoPF with two baseline approaches that both assume the existence of primary keys. The increased interest in institutional entrepreneurship has produced a large number of scholarly publications, especially in the last five years. As a consequence, the literature landscape is somewhat complex and scattered. We aim to compile a quantitative overview of the field within business and management research by conducting bibliometric performance analyses and science mappings. We identified the most productive and influential journals, authors, and articles with the highest impact. We found that institutional entrepreneurship has stronger ties to organization studies than to entrepreneurship research. Additionally, a large body of literature at the intersection of institutions and entrepreneurship does not refer to institutional entrepreneurship theory. The science mappings revealed a distinction between theoretical and conceptual research on one hand and applied and empirical research on the other hand. Research clusters reflect the structure–agency problem by focusing on the change agent’s goals and interests, strategies, and specific implementation mechanisms, as well as the relevance of public agents for existing institutions, and a more abstract process rather than agency view. T1 - Performance analysis and science mapping of institutional entrepreneurship research JF - Administrative Sciences N2 - Institutional entrepreneurship comprises the activities of agents who disrupt existing social institutions or create new ones, often to enable diffusion, especially of radical innovations, in a market. The increased interest in institutional entrepreneurship has produced a large number of scholarly publications, especially in the last five years. As a consequence, the literature landscape is somewhat complex and scattered. We aim to compile a quantitative overview of the field within business and management research by conducting bibliometric performance analyses and science mappings. We identified the most productive and influential journals, authors, and articles with the highest impact. We found that institutional entrepreneurship has stronger ties to organization studies than to entrepreneurship research. Additionally, a large body of literature at the intersection of institutions and entrepreneurship does not refer to institutional entrepreneurship theory. The science mappings revealed a distinction between theoretical and conceptual research on one hand and applied and empirical research on the other hand. Research clusters reflect the structure–agency problem by focusing on the change agent’s goals and interests, strategies, and specific implementation mechanisms, as well as the relevance of public agents for existing institutions, and a more abstract process rather than agency view. However, resilience is a multi-faceted concept that is difficult to operationalize. Focusing on resilience mechanisms, such as diversity, network architectures or adaptive capacity, has recently been suggested as means to operationalize resilience. Still, the focus on mechanisms is not specific enough. We suggest a conceptual framework, resilience trinity, to facilitate management based on resilience mechanisms in three distinctive decision contexts and time-horizons: 1) reactive, when there is an imminent threat to ES resilience and a high pressure to act, 2) adjustive, when the threat is known in general but there is still time to adapt management and 3) provident, when time horizons are very long and the nature of the threats is uncertain, leading to a low willingness to act. Resilience has different interpretations and implications at these different time horizons, which also prevail in different disciplines. Social ecology, ecology and engineering are often implicitly focussing on provident, adjustive or reactive resilience, respectively, but these different notions of resilience and their corresponding social, ecological and economic tradeoffs need to be reconciled. Otherwise, we keep risking unintended consequences of reactive actions, or shying away from provident action because of uncertainties that cannot be reduced. The suggested trinity of time horizons and their decision contexts could help ensuring that longer-term management actions are not missed while urgent threats to ES are given priority. To organize the field and identify distinguishable research clusters, we conducted a co-citation analysis focusing on the long-term history of research. We compare our findings with a previously published bibliographic coupling, focusing on the more recent research to trace its development over time. Our study revealed six research clusters: (1) Planning the Future with Scenarios, (2) Scenario Planning in Strategic Management, (3) Reinforcing the Scenario Technique, (4) Integration of Scenario Planning and MCDA, (5) Combination of Different Methods, and (6) Decision-making through Stochastic Programming, whereas the bibliographic coupling generated 11 clusters. Some former research clusters were divided into separate new clusters, while others were united. Additionally, completely new clusters emerged. Future research on scenarios is expected (1) to further differentiate into strategy and operations, (2) to be based on “behavioral futures” or “behavioral foresight” as a new research stream, (3) to advance the scenario technique methodically and include new specific scenario generation methods, and (4) to put forth new application areas. Due to the increasing scholarly attention, the literature landscape has become scattered and fragmented. With a focus on the commercial application of the IoT and corresponding research, we employ a co-citation analysis and literature review to structure the field. We find and describe 19 research themes. To consolidate the extant research, we propose a research framework, which is based on a theoretical implementation process of IoT as a concept, specific IoT applications, or architectures integrated in an adapted input–process–output model. The main variables of the model are an initial definition and conceptualization of an IoT concept (input), which goes through an evaluation process (process), before it is implemented and can have an impact in practice (output). The paper contributes to interdisciplinary research relating to a business and management perspective on IoT by providing a holistic overview of predominant research themes and an integrative research framework. Historically, many African savannas were used intensively for livestock grazing, which contributed to widespread patterns of bush encroachment across savanna systems. To reverse bush encroachment, it has been proposed to change the cattle-dominated land use to one dominated by comparatively specialized browsers and usually native herbivores. However, the consequences for ecosystem properties and processes remain largely unclear. We used the ecohydrological, spatially explicit model EcoHyD to assess the impacts of two contrasting, herbivore land-use strategies on a Namibian savanna: grazer- versus browser-dominated herbivore communities. We varied the densities of grazers and browsers and determined the resulting composition and diversity of the plant community, total vegetation cover, soil moisture, and water use by plants. Our results showed that plant types that are less palatable to herbivores were best adapted to grazing or browsing animals in all simulated densities. Also, plant types that had a competitive advantage under limited water availability were among the dominant ones irrespective of land-use scenario. Overall, the results were in line with our expectations: under high grazer densities, we found heavy bush encroachment and the loss of the perennial grass matrix. Importantly, regardless of the density of browsers, grass cover and plant functional diversity were significantly higher in browsing scenarios. Browsing herbivores increased grass cover, and the higher total cover in turn improved water uptake by plants overall. We concluded that, in contrast to grazing-dominated land-use strategies, land-use strategies dominated by browsing herbivores, even at high herbivore densities, sustain diverse vegetation communities with high cover of perennial grasses, resulting in lower erosion risk and bolstering ecosystem services.
