Using a preregistered empirical example, we first compare selected social categories ('migrant background', family heritage, religion, citizenship, cultural identification, and generation status) in their potential to reveal participant heterogeneity. Second, we investigate differences in means and relations between variables (discrimination experiences, perceived societal Islamophobia, and national identity) and academic motivation among 1335 adolescents in Germany (48% female, M-age = 14.69). Mit der Einführung dieses Merkmals entschied sich der Landesgesetzgeber dafür, die – aus seiner Sicht weiterhin dringend notwendige – Sprachförderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund in der Schule nicht mehr an eine ausländische Staatsbürgerschaft, sondern, ungeachtet der Staatsbürgerschaft der Schüler, an das Vorherrschen einer nichtdeutschen Kommunikationssprache in der Familie anzuknüpfen. An diesem Ansatz hat sich auch durch die Novellierung des Berliner Schulgesetzes im Jahre 2004 nichts Grundsätzliches geändert. Neben der Bedeutung des Merkmals ‚ndH‘ für die individuelle Sprachförderung in Schulen kommt diesem Merkmal – zusammen mit dem erst unlängst aufgewerteten weiteren Sprachfördermerkmal „Lernmittelbefreiung“ (LmB) – jedoch nunmehr auch eine zentrale Rolle bei der Zumessung von Sprachfördermitteln und Personalressourcen zu. In der Vergangenheit ist das Merkmal ‚ndH‘ allerdings wegen seiner angeblich diskriminierenden und vermeintlich segregierenden Wirkung mehrfach in die Kritik geraten, die sich, ausgelöst durch einen Vorfall an einer Kreuzberger Grundschule im Jahre 2012, noch einmal verstärkt hat. So wird neben der Tatsache, dass das Merkmal ‚ndH‘ überhaupt erhoben und der Sprachförderung zugrunde gelegt wird, auch die Praxis der Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Wissenschaft, auf den sog. Schulporträts im Internet ‚ndH‘-Quoten zu veröffentlichen, angegriffen und die Abschaffung dieser Praxis gefordert. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Beantwortung der Frage nach der Berechtigung dieser Kritik. Ausgehend von einer Darstellung zur Einführung und Entwicklung des Merkmals ‚ndH‘ unter Berücksichtigung der zuvor geltenden Rechtslage und einer Darstellung der aktuellen rechtlichen Grundlagen der schulischen Sprachförderung im Land Berlin wird dieses Merkmal einer näheren Betrachtung unterzogen. Nach einer Bestimmung des Merkmals ‚ndH‘, einer Erläuterung der einschlägigen Regelungen zur ‚ndH‘-Sprachförderung und einem Vergleich mit dem zusätzlich bestehenden Fördermerkmal ‚LmB‘ im Kontext der aktuellen Bestimmungen wird zunächst ein Überblick über wesentliche Aspekte der schulischen Sprachförderung auf der Grundlage des Merkmals ‚ndH‘ in der Praxis gegeben, in den wiederum das Vergleichsmerkmal ‚LmB‘ einbezogen wird. Daran knüpft die Untersuchung der These an, das Merkmal ‚ndH‘ bzw. zumindest seine Veröffentlichung im Rahmen der Schulporträts der Senatsschulverwaltung habe diskriminierende Wirkung und führe zu einer Segregation der Schülerschaft. Im Anschluss daran wird als zusätzliche Überlegung der Frage nach der tatsächlichen Notwendigkeit einer sich an dem Merkmal ‚ndH‘ und damit einer familiären Kommunikationssprache orientierenden Sprachförderung nachgegangen, die, wenn sie denn bejaht werden könnte, etwaige Diskriminierungs- und Segregationswirkungen rechtfertigte. N2 - Since the mid-1990s, school language training in the state of Berlin has fallen back on the criterion “non-German heritage language” (German: nichtdeutsche Herkunftssprache – ndH). Considering language training as still urgently needed, the state legislator decided by introducing this new criterion to base language training in schools for children and youths with a migration background not on a foreign (i.e. non-German) citizenship anymore, but on the prevailing use of a non-German language of communication in the family, regardless of the students’ citizenship. Little has changed in that regard, even after the amendment of the Law on Schools in Berlin (German: Berliner Schulgesetz) in 2004. Besides the significance of the criterion ‘ndH‘ for individual language training in schools, however, it now also plays a central role when it comes to measuring language training aids and personal resources, alongside with another recently evaluated language training criterion, the so-called ‘Lernmittelbefreiung’ (LmB; exemption from the payment of contributions for learning aids). In the past, the ‘ndH’-criterion was criticized numerous times because of its allegedly discriminatory and supposedly segregating effects, though. In 2012, critics even increased after an incident which had taken place at an elementary school in Kreuzberg (a city district in Berlin with a high proportion of i.a. Turkish migrants). The Criticism is not only directed at the fact that the criterion ‘ndH’ has been brought to the agenda at all and that this criterion serves as a basis for the language training. It is also the practice of Berlin's Senate Department for Education, Youth and Science (German: Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Wissenschaft) to publish ‘ndH’-quotes on the internet within the so-called school portraits that is heavily attacked. In the view of the critics, the abolishment of this practice is already overdue. The objective of this thesis is to reply to the question of whether and to what extent the criticism of the ‘ndH’-criterion and the Senate Department’s practice is justified. Starting with a description of the introduction and development of the ‘ndH‘-criterion in consideration of the previous legal system and a representation of the current legal framework of school language training in the state of Berlin, the criterion ‘ndh’ will be examined more closely. After determining the ‘ndH’-criterion, explaining the relevant regulations relating to ‘ndH‘-language training and drawing a comparison with the (additional) ‘LmB’-criterion in the context of the current legal framework, an overview will be given of the relevant aspects of school language training on the basis of the ‘ndH‘-criterion in practice. This overview will again include a comparison with the criterion ‘LmB’. This will be the point of departure for the analysis of the critics’ assumption that the mere existence of the ‚ndH‘-criterion or at least its publication within the Senate Department’s school portraits has a discriminatory effect and leads to segregation in schools. For most species, the highest typical degree of relatedness is between full siblings with 50% shared genes. However, this is poorly understood in species with unusually high relatedness between individuals: clonal organisms. Although there has been some investigation into clonal invertebrates and yeast, nothing is known about kin selection in clonal vertebrates. We show that a clonal fish, the Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa), can distinguish between different clonal lineages, associating with genetically identical, sister clones, and use multiple sensory modalities. Also, they scale their aggressive behaviors according to the relatedness to other females: they are more aggressive to non-related clones. Our results demonstrate that even in species with very small genetic differences between individuals, kin recognition can be adaptive. Their discriminatory abilities and regulation of costly behaviors provides a powerful example of natural selection in species with limited genetic diversity. Results revealed that adolescents who experienced greater discrimination and language hassles showed a lower sense of belonging with classmates and subsequently, greater psychological distress. Those who experienced greater language hassles also exhibited a lower sense of perceived competence, and ultimately poorer academic adjustment. We conclude that self-determination theory (SDT) provides an important framework to explain key processes underlying the links between acculturation hassles with psychological distress and academic (mal-)adjustment. Higher heritage (but not national) identity, a higher sense of belonging with classmates and with teacherswere associated with better socioemotional and academic adjustment. An examination of interaction effects between discrimination andforms of belonging on adjustment revealed that, while the association between discrimination and poorer adjustment weakened for thosewith higher heritage identity, the association between discrimination and physiological stress increased for those with higher teacherrelatedness. We conclude that heritage identity (but not national identity or sense of belonging with classmates) can indeed be a protectivefactor against the negative effects of discrimination for adolescents of immigrant descent in Germany. Even though belonging with teachersmay exacerbate discrimination effects, further investigation with longitudinal data is needed. Nine participants comprising refugee students (N = 2), former refugee students (N = 2), teachers (N = 3), and project supervisors (N = 2) participated in the study. The first author conducted interviews and observations in the camp. The data were qualitatively coded deductively and analysed in Nvivo 12. We found that the YEP intervention faced contextual challenges that hindered the achievement of the implementation quality standards outlined in the INEE minimum standards for education. Refugee youth and refugee teachers experienced various forms of discrimination, including at individual, institutional, and structural levels. We conclude that providing refugee youth with an inclusive and high-quality education is central to providing secure and long-term solutions to their challenges and adversities and may promote their psychosocial wellbeing. Recent studies also showed that infants visually explore same-and other-race faces differently. However, it is still unclear whether infants' looking behavior for same- and other-race faces is related to their face discrimination abilities. To investigate this question we conducted a habituation-dishabituation experiment to examine Caucasian 9-month-old infants' gaze behavior, and their discrimination of same- and other-race faces, using eye-tracking measurements. We found that infants looked longer at the eyes of same-race faces over the course of habituation, as compared to other-race faces. After habituation, infants demonstrated a clear other-race effect by successfully discriminating between same-race faces, but not other-race faces. Importantly, the infants' ability to discriminate between same-race faces significantly correlated with their fixation time towards the eyes of same-race faces during habituation. Thus, our findings suggest that for infants old enough to begin exhibiting the ORE, gaze behavior during habituation is related to their ability to differentiate among same-race faces, compared to other-race faces. The present study investigated whether it is possible to re-sensitize Caucasian 12-month-old infants to other-race Asian faces through statistical learning by familiarizing them with different statistical distributions of these faces. The familiarization faces were created by generating a morphed continuum from one Asian face identity to another. In the unimodal condition, infants were familiarized with a frequency distribution wherein they saw the midpoint face of the morphed continuum the most frequently. In the bimodal condition, infants were familiarized with a frequency distribution wherein they saw faces closer to the endpoints of the morphed continuum the most frequently. After familiarization, infants were tested on their discrimination of the two original Asian faces. The infants' looking times during the test indicated that infants in the bimodal condition could discriminate between the two faces, while infants in the unimodal condition could not. These findings therefore suggest that 12-month-old Caucasian infants could be re-sensitized to Asian faces by familiarizing them with a bimodal frequency distribution of such faces. This is a form of identity denial and is linked to psychological distress. To test how foreigner objectification could be measured in Europe, we assessed whether the Foreigner Objectification Scale demonstrated reliability and validity with German adolescents. The sample included 806 9th graders from 17 high schools. The results showed that the scale demonstrates good reliability, scalar measurement invariance across gender and citizenship status, and partial scalar measurement invariance across family heritage, generational status, and cultural self-identification. Adolescents who scored higher on the scale also reported greater school behavioral disengagement, lower life satisfaction, and stronger ethnic identity. Our findings suggest that the scale is psychometrically sound and is linked in theoretically consistent ways to adjustment and ethnic identity. We conclude that this scale offers another way to capture subtle discrimination experiences that add to a more comprehensive understanding of discrimination and the related implications in Europe. N2 - Als Ausländer_in wahrgenommen zu werden, unabhängig vom Generationsstatus, der Staatsbürgerschaft oder der Selbstidentifikation, wird „foreigner objectification“ (Ausländer_innenobjektifizierung) genannt. Ausländer_innenobjektifizierung ist eine Form der Identitätsverleugnung und wird mit größerem psychologischem Stress in Verbindung gebracht. Um zu testen, wie Ausländer_innenobjektifizierung in Europa gemessen werden kann, untersuchten wir, ob die Foreigner Objectification Scale bei deutschen Jugendlichen Reliabilität und Validität aufweist. Die Stichprobe umfasste 806 Neuntklässler_innen aus 17 Sekundarschulen. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die Skala eine gute Reliabilität, skalare Messinvarianz über das Geschlecht und die Staatsbürgerschaft sowie eine partielle skalare Messinvarianz über die familiäre Herkunft, den Generationsstatus und die kulturelle Selbstidentifikation aufweist. Jugendliche, die höhere Werte auf der Skala erreichten, berichteten auch über ein größeres schulisches Disengagement, eine geringere Lebenszufriedenheit und eine stärkere ethnische Identität. Unsere Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Skala psychometrisch solide ist und auf theoretisch konsistente Weise mit Adaptation und ethnischer Identität verbunden ist. Dies erweist sich jedoch als höchst problematisch, da Personen mit nicht-binärer Geschlechtsidentität in einem hohen Maß von Diskriminierung und sozialer Ungleichheit betroffen sind. In der Abschlussarbeit wird deswegen mit Hilfe einer intersektionalen Perspektive auf diese Forschungslücke eingegangen. Es wird dabei die Frage gestellt, welche Möglichkeiten und Grenzen das Konzept der Intersektionalität in Bezug auf die Erforschung von Diskriminierungserfahrungen von Personen mit nicht-binärer Geschlechtsidentität bietet und worauf die soziale Ungleichheit dieser Personengruppe basiert. Hierfür wird zunächst nicht nur auf grundlegende geschlechtersoziologische Theorien eingegangen sowie das Konzept der Intersektionalität erläutert, sondern auch ausführlich der Wissenschaftsstand zu nicht-binären Personen nachgezeichnet. Bei der darauffolgenden Analyse der Diskriminierungserfahrungen werden vor allem die sprachliche Benachteiligung, die Invalidierung der Geschlechtsidentität sowie die durch Institutionen und systematische Strukturen hervorgerufene, besonders dramatische soziale Ungleichheit deutlich. Aus einer intersektionalen Perspektive zeigen sich zudem deutliche Unterschiede zwischen nicht-binären Personen, wobei sich vor allem der Einfluss von Rassismus als äußerst auffällig erweist. Die soziale Ungleichheit der nicht-binären Personen lässt sich dabei zu einem großen Teil durch die in der Gesellschaft vorherrschende Heteronormativität und dem Alltagswissen über eine vermeintliche Dualität der Geschlechter erklären. Im Hinblick auf die Fruchtbarkeit einer intersektionalen Perspektive auf Diskriminierungserfahrungen von nicht-binären Personen zeigen sich Grenzen des Konzepts vor allem bei der notwendigen Limitierung der Kategorienanzahl und bei einer Herangehensweise, welche den Begriff der Intersektionalität wörtlich nimmt. N2 - In intersectional inequality research as well as in feminist Gender Studies the focus towards gender based discrimination and justice is mostly only on the living situations of men and women even though there has been scientific knowledge about a wide variety of gender identities for years. This turns out to be highly problematic because non-binary people face a great amount of discrimination and social inequality. Hence this thesis aims to respond to that research gap by utilizing an intersectional perspective. The main question is, which possibilities and limits arise by using the concept of intersectionality in regard to researching experience of discrimination of non-binary people and whereupon the social inequality of this group is based. Therefore in the first chapter fundamental gender-sociological theories are pointed out and the concept of intersectionality is elucidated. The second chapter begins with an elaborate display of the scientific knowledge about non-binary people, which is followed by the analysis of their experiences of discrimination. The main findings there are linguistic discrimination, invalidation of their gender identity and dramatic social inequality through institutions and systematic structures. From an intersectional perspective significant divergences in the experience of discrimination appear as well inbetween the group of non-binary people whereby the influence of racism is especially prevalent. The social inequality of non-binary people can be explained by the societal predominant heteronormativity and the everyday knowledge about the presumed duality of gender. In regard to the fruitfulness of an intersectional perspective on experiences of discrimination of non-binary people, the analysis shows that the main limits of the concept are the necessity of restricting the amount of research categories. In contrast the possibilities of using a mix of the anticategorical and intercategorical approach is that criticising exclusions in the research of social inequality becomes possible, powerful processes of categorising can be made visible and differences inbetween social groups become apparent. To reduce the amount of discrimination that non-binary people have to face on a daily basis, structural change is necessary as well as a respectful, enlightened and inclusive contact with non-binary people in everyday life and science.
