In this paper, we examine runoff production of 53 sprinkling experiments on the water-repellent soils in the southern Alps of Switzerland; simulated plot scale tracer transport in the macroporous soils at the Weiherbach site, Germany; and runoff generation data from the 2.3-km(2) Tannhausen catchment, Germany, that has cracking soils. The response at the three sites is highly dependent on the initial soil moisture state as a result of the threshold dynamics of the systems. A simple statistical model of threshold behavior is proposed to help interpret the scatter in the observations. Specifically, the model portrays how the inherent macrostate uncertainty of initial soil moisture translates into the scatter of the observed system response. The statistical model is then used to explore the asymptotic pattern of predictability when increasing the number of observations, which is normally not possible in a field study. Although the physical and chemical mechanisms of the processes at the three sites are different, the predictability patterns are remarkably similar. Predictability is smallest when the system state is close to the threshold and increases as the system state moves away from it. There is inherent uncertainty in the response data that is not measurement error but is related to the observability of the initial conditions. In this paper, we report an optimized sequence of steps for preparing such ferroelectrets from commercial nonvoided ploy(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) films by means of foaming with CO2 biaxial mechanical stretching, controlled void inflation, and bipolar electric charging. The nonvoid PETP films foamed with supercritical CO2 at a suitably high pressure and subsequently annealed for stabilization. The cellular foam structure was further optimized by means of well controlled biaxial stretching in a commercial stretcher and sometimes subsequent inflamation in a pressure chamber. Bipolar electric charging of the internal voids was achieved through the application of high electric fields in an SF0 atmosphere. The new optimized PETP ferroelectric exhibit quite large piezoelectric coefficients up to almost 500 pCN(-1), for which unusually low elastic stiffness of only around 0.3 MPa are essential. Additionally, theoretical results for alternative conformations and energy barriers were obtained by molecular modeling. The study revealed different NH trans tautomers with regard to the orientation of the dithianyl ligands for the free base porphyrins 1-3. Relatively ruffled porphyrin core conformations were established for the transition states of the dithianyl rotation, resulting in a lower rotational energy barrier for the nickel(II) complex 4 compared to that of the free base systems. We analyzed a 12 yr data set of ciliate biomass and species composition in large, deep Lake Constance to understand the factors influencing ciliate spring development. The start of ciliate net growth in spring was closely linked to that of edible algae, chlorophyll a and the vertical mixing intensity, but independent of water temperature. During ciliate spring growth, the relative contribution of ciliated interception feeders was positively related to that of cryptomonads, whereas the relative contribution of filter feeders correlated positively with that of non-cryptomonads. The duration of ciliate dominance in spring was largely controlled by the highly variable onset of the phytoplankton bloom, as the termination of the ciliate bloom was less variable. During years with an extended spring bloom of algae and ciliates, internally forced species shifts were observed in both communities. Interception feeders alternated with filter feeders in their relative importance as did cryptomonads and non-cryptomonads. Extended spring blooms were observed when vertical mixing intensity was low at low temperatures during early spring, which will become less likely under the anticipated climate change scenarios. The termination of the ciliate spring bloom occurred prior to a reduction in food concentration and mostly also prior to the mass development of daphnids alone, but coincided with increased grazing by various predators together, such as rotifers, copepods and daphnids in late May/early June. Based on long-term data from Lake Constance, we investigated the individual and combined effects of these variables on algal dynamics using descriptive statistics, multiple regression models and a processoriented dynamic simulation model. The latter considered edible and less-edible algae and was forced by observed or anticipated irradiance, temperature and vertical mixing intensity. Unexpectedly, irradiance often dominated algal net growth rather than vertical mixing for the following reason: algal dynamics depended on algal net losses from the euphotic layer to larger depth due to vertical mixing. These losses strongly depended on the vertical algal gradient which, in turn, was determined by the mixing intensity during the previous days, thereby introducing a memory effect. This observation implied that during intense mixing that had already reduced the vertical algal gradient, net losses due to mixing were small. Consequently, even in deep Lake Constance, the reduction in primary production due to low light was often more influential than the net losses due to mixing. In the regression model, the dynamics of small, fast-growing algae was best explained by vertical mixing intensity and global irradiance, whereas those of larger algae were best explained by their biomass 1 week earlier. The simulation model additionally revealed that even in late winter grazing may represent an important loss factor during calm periods when losses due to mixing are small. The importance of losses by mixing and grazing changed rapidly as it depended on the variable mixing intensity. Higher temperature, lower global irradiance and enhanced mixing generated lower algal biomass and primary production in the dynamic simulation model. This suggests that potential consequences of climate change may partly counteract each other. To investigate the importance of metals to C. acidophila in these lakes, we examined the response of growth, photosynthesis, cell structure, heat-shock protein (Hsp) accumulation, and metal adsorption after incubation in metal-rich lake water and artificial growth medium enriched with metals (Fe, Zn). Incubation in both metal-rich lake water and medium caused large decreases in photosystem II function (though no differences among lakes), but no decrease in growth rate (except for medium + Fe). Concentrations of small Hsps were higher in algae incubated in metal-rich lake- water than in metal-enriched medium, whereas Hsp60 and Hsp70A were either less or equally expressed. Cellular Zn and Fe contents were lower, and metals adsorbed to the cell surface were higher, in lake-water-incubated algae than in medium- grown cells. The results indicate that high Zn or Fe levels are likely not the main or only contributor to the low primary production in mining lakes, and multiple adaptations of C. acidophila (e.g., high Hsp levels, decreased metal accumulation) increase its tolerance to metals and permit survival under such adverse environmental conditions. I show that, apart from the preference for three-part lists described by Jefferson (1990), lists are embedded in a larger three-component structure that the list is the middle part of. For lists proper, I suggest to differentiate between closed and open lists that are produced with different kinds of practices. It is the prosody that is used to suggest the list as made up of a closed or an open number of list items, irrespective of its syntactic embedding. I then concentrate on open lists, in particular their intonation. Open lists may be produced with different kinds of, albeit similar, intonation contours. But it is not so much the particular intonation contour that is constitutive of lists, but a variety of similar contours plus the repetition of the chosen contour for at least some or even all of the list items. Furthermore, intonation is deployed to suggest the interpretation of a potential final list item as either a designed list completer or as another designed item of the list. The design of this final list item as a completer or as another list item is used as a practice to signal the non-completion or completion of the list proper. But even after completing the list proper, the larger three-component structure also has to be closed in order to embed and accommodate the list into the surrounding sequential interaction. For the analysis of the practices of list construction I am concentrating on the role of prosody, especially intonation, giving evidence to show that intonation is indeed one of the methodically used constitutive cues that makes the production and structuring of lists recognizable for recipients. A1 - Esser, Günter A1 - Laucht, Manfred T1 - Concurrent alcohol and tobacco use during early adolescence characterizes a group at risk N2 - Aims: To investigate whether concurrent alcohol and tobacco use during early adolescence characterizes a subgroup that differs from users of one substance only regarding several risk factors for later substance use problems. Methods: Participants were from a prospective longitudinal cohort study of 384 children at risk for later psychopathology, with the majority being born with obstetric complications and psychosocial adversities. Assessments of adolescent drug consumption and related intrapersonal characteristics were obtained at age 15. Results: Compared to consumers of alcohol only, 15-year-olds drinking and smoking during the same time period (past 4 weeks) had significantly higher levels of consumption and more excessive use of alcohol, started drinking at an earlier age, had higher scores on the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence, and more cannabis use. This group could be distinguished from users of alcohol only by higher novelty seeking and more positive alcohol effect expectancies. Compared to consumers of tobacco only, concurrent users reported higher nicotine dependence and more cannabis use. No significant differences were observed regarding frequency and age at initiation of tobacco use, tobacco-related sensitivity, self- efficacy and instrumentality as well as novelty seeking. Conclusions: Concurrent alcohol and tobacco use during early adolescence is associated with characteristics that are well known as risk factors for later alcohol use problems and dependence and that should be targeted by prevention programs. The compound can be obtained directly by oxidation of the ammonium salt of the ligand. C8H6S10 forms three polymorphs: (I), which crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, (II) and (III), which crystallize in the monoclinic space groups P21/c and P21/n, respectively. The crystal and molecular structures are presented here. The determination of the absolute configuration of (I) indicated the P-helical enantiomer. In contrast to this, the crystals of (II) und (III) are racemic, containing P- and M-helical enantiomers. We performed laboratory and field investigations to test for P-i limitation and its dependence on C-i and K+ concentrations. The minimum cell quota for phosphorus (Q(0)) and phosphatase enzyme activity were similar to those for neutrophilic algae, despite the low pH and high concentrations of iron and aluminium, indicating no extra metabolic costs or inhibition of enzymes by the extreme environment. The threshold concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus for growth (SRPt), the algal C:P ratio and the alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity all suggested a moderate P-i limitation of C. acidophila in Lake 111. SRPt and Q(0) were higher at low CO2 and K+ concentrations in culture, showing a relationship between C-i and P-i acquisition. Furthermore, SRPt and Q(0) were higher under K+/P-i-colimiting conditions than under P-i-limiting conditions alone, suggesting that K+ concentrations influence P-i limitation in C. acidophila as well. Our results show that a limitation by one macronutrient requires consideration of the availability of the others as their uptake mechanisms depend on each other. Notwithstanding these interactions, C-i or K+ concentrations had no clear influence on the P-i limitation of C. acidophila in Lake 111. T1 - Seasonal changes in the concentration and metabolic activity of bacteria and viruses at an Antarctic coastal site N2 - Bacteria play a key role in the world's oceans, supporting nutrient remineralisation and mediating carbon transfer. Little is known about annual changes in bacterial concentration, production and metabolism during the extreme seasonal changes in biological productivity in Antarctic waters. We measured rates of bacterial production, concentrations of viruses and bacteria and environmental parameters between February 2004 and January 2005 at an Antarctic coastal site. Concentrations of total bacteria and viruses were obtained using 4', 6-diamidino-2- phenylindole (DAPI) and SYBR Green I (Molecular Probes), respectively. Populations of bacteria in different metabolic states were estimated using vital stains. Concentrations of bacteria with intact or compromised plasma membranes were estimated using BacLight (Molecular Probes) and active cells estimated using 6-carboxyfluorescein diacetate (6CFDA). Our study showed 6CFDA and BacLight gave rapid and ecologically valuable insights into bacterial physiology, production and growth in natural Antarctic communities that were poorly represented by changes in total cell concentrations. Concentrations of total, active and intact bacteria declined rapidly at the end of summer probably owing to viral infection and microheterotrophic grazing. The decline continued over winter, likely owing to substrate limitation, and concentrations only increased after the phytoplankton bloom in spring and summer. Bacterial abundance was positively correlated with particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), but not dissolved organic carbon (DOC), reflecting the refractory nature of the DOC pool. Only active and intact bacteria were significantly correlated with concentrations of chl a and rates of bacterial production. Furthermore, the obtained rates of [H-3]thymidine uptake suggest that bacterial growth rates can be sustained by the populations identified as intact or by active cells alone. We compare the results from experimental data with results obtained from computer simulations of a simple model of the IOVP effect and discuss alternative accounts. The specific environmental factors controlling the present patterns, however, vary with the scale of observation. In this study we estimated abundance of adult trees and tree regeneration in a Southern Alpine valley in Ticino, Switzerland. We hypothesized that, at the present scale, spatial pattern of post-cultural tree species does not primarily depend on topographic features but responds instead to small- scale variation in historical land use. We used multivariate regression trees to relate species abundances to environmental variables. Species matrices were comprised of single tree species abundance as well as species groups. Groups were formed according to common ecological species requirements with respect to shade tolerance, soil moisture and soil nutrients. Though species variance could only be partially explained, a clear ranking in the relative importance of environmental variables emerged. Tree basal area of formerly cultivated Castanea sativa (Mill.) was the most important factor accounting for up to 50% of species' variation. Influence of topographic attributes was minor, restricted to profile curvature, and partly contradictory in response. Our results suggest the importance of biotic factors and soil properties for small-scale variation in tree species composition and need for further investigations in the study area on the ecological requirements of tree species in the early growing stage. We compared temperamental traits derived from the New York Longitudinal Study (NYLS) model and the Cloninger dimensions in the developmental course and investigated the associations of temperament with sex as well as with obstetric risks or psychosocial risks present at birth. - Methods: Participants were 151 boys and 157 girls born at differing degrees of obstetric and psychosocial risk from a longitudinal study on a high-risk community sample. In infancy and childhood, NYLS-derived temperamental characteristics were assessed by a highly structured parent interview and standardized behavioral observations. At age 15 years, the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory/1218 was administered. - Results: Moderate correlations were found between Junior Temperament and Character Inventory scales in adolescence and NYLS-derived factors in childhood. The psychosocial risk load seemed to influence the expression of novelty seeking or corresponding NYLS-derived factors, whereas the obstetric risks did not contribute to variation in temperament. Our findings further support highly sex-specific gene x environment interactions on temperament in the developmental course. - Conclusion: The content of our NYLS-derived factors and the specific type of association across different temperament constructs fit into the increasing consensus regarding a small number of higher-order temperamental traits. I am adopting the network definition formulated by Zijderveld: "a set of reciprocal, usually informal, often rather anonymous bonds between actors (individuals or collectivities), which is set up and maintained for the promotion of private interests, and usually lacks a fixed, vertical hierarchy of power. " Networks are structured as dyads, triads, sub-groups and groups. Humboldt's Paris diaries and his exchanges of letters with Schiller (1759- 1805) and Goethe (1749-1832) will be cited as sources. It will be the task of subsequent studies to establish whether any letters from Humboldt's French contacts to Humboldt (and vice versa), or any diaries that belonged to them, exist. Hence, the present article analyses the relationships between Humboldt and his contacts from Humboldt's perspective only. The results of this study may be summarised as follows: it is not surprising that the young Humboldt did not establish any networks during his first stay in Paris in August 1789. Later on, however, the relationship deepened between Humboldt and Mirabeau (1749-1791), with whom he became acquainted during the course of his visit. In his work on the theory of the state, Ideen zum einem Versuch, die Grdnzen der Wirksamkeit des Staats zu bestimmen (1792), Humboldt examined the suggestions contained in Mirabeau's reflections on reform in Travail sur l'education publique (1791). In his work, Humboldt radicalised Mirabeau's ideas with a view to ensuring that education remained free from state influence. It was only during his second journey to Paris that Humboldt established an intensive network. As there are gaps in his diary, it is likely that some information on his network is missing. Furthermore, he twice interrupted his stay in Paris to travel to Spain (Autumn 1799-Spring 1800, 1801). Of the 99 people he met, only those whom he met more than once will be taken into consideration in this article. The list of the remaining 33 people will be arranged as dyads, triads and sub-groups, depending on the frequency of the contacts. As it is only possible to speak of a network if the interacting persons are working in the same areas and share the same interests, these will be analysed. The results deserve mention here: one area is the philosophy of Kant (1724 -1804), which was decisive in providing a basis for Humboldt's educational theory. Fundamental differences between Humboldt and his contacts are evident here. These differences prompted Humboldt to study the sensualis, writings of Condillac (1715-1780), who was mentioned by Humboldt's contact partners as an antipode to Kant. A second area consists of his discourses on state theory and education. Having assimilated (as a result of his contact to Mirabeau during his first stay in Paris) Mirabeau's writing on public education in his education theory, Humboldt evidently devoted himse (-through the mediation of his contact partners-to Condorcet's (1743-1794) draftfor the entire structure of the French educational system (1792). The question is discussed whether Humboldt was subsequently influenced by Condorcet in his-Humboldt's-plan (1809) to form, step by step, the 1 -ussian education system. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Data were taken from the Mannheim Study of Children at Risk, an ongoing longitudinal study of the long-term outcomes of early risk factors followed up from birth on. Participants: Three hundred five adolescents (146 boys, 159 girls) participated in a follow-up assessment at age 15 years. Main Outcome Measures: Measures of ADHD symptoms according to DSM-IV were obtained using standardized structural interviews with adolescents and their parents. Psychosocial adversity was determined according to an "enriched" family adversity index as proposed by Rutter and Quinton. DNA was genotyped for the common DAT1 40-base pair (bp) variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism in the 3' untranslated region; 3 previously described single nucleotide polymorphisms in exon 15, intron 9, and exon 9; and a novel 30-bp VNTR polymorphism in intron 8. Results: Adolescents homozygous for the 10-repeat allele of the 40-bp VNTR polymorphism who grew up in greater psychosocial adversity exhibited significantly more inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity than adolescents with other genotypes or who lived in less adverse family conditions (significant interaction, P=.013-017). This gene X environment interaction was also observed in individuals homozygous for the 6-repeat allele of the 30-bp VNTR polymorphism and the haplotype comprising both markers. Conclusions: These findings provide initial evidence that environmental risks as described by the Rutter Family Adversity Index moderate the impact of the DAT1 gene on ADHD symptoms, suggesting a DAT1 effect only in those individuals exposed to psychosocial adversity. As one of the surface plasmon modes becomes propagative for some choice of parameters we adopt an adiabatic mode definition where we follow this mode into the propagative sector and count it together with the surface plasmon contribution, calling this contribution ``plasmonic''. We evaluate analytically the contribution of the plasmonic modes to the Casimir energy. Surprisingly we find that this becomes repulsive for intermediate and large mirror separations. The contribution of surface plasmons to the Casimir energy plays a fundamental role not only at short but also at large distances. This suggests possibilities to taylor the Casimir force via a manipulation of the surface plasmon properties. Since natural cork has many voids, it is difficult to obtain uniform samples with the required dimensions. Therefore, a more uniform material, namely commercial cork agglomerate, usually used for floor and wall coverings, is employed in the present study. Since we know from our previous work that the electrical properties of cork are drastically affected by absorbed and adsorbed water, samples were protected by means of different polymer coatings (applied by spin-coating or soaking). Corona charging and isothermal charging and discharging currents were used to study the electrical trapping and detrapping capabilities of the samples. A comparison of the results leads to the conclusion that the most promising method for storing electric charges in this cellular material consists of drying and coating or soaking with a hydrophobic, electrically insulating polymer such as polytetraflouroethylene (Teflon (R)). High zooplankton grazing pressure was exerted by a final concentration of 100 daphnids L-1 in the Daphnia treatments. Infochemicals were obtained by filtration (0.2 µm) of water from D. galeata x hyalina cultures (200 ind. L-1 exposed for 24 h). This filtrate was added to the S. schroeteri cultures in two concentrations corresponding to 7 and 50 daphnids L-1, respectively. The growth rate of S. schroeteri was neither affected significantly by direct Daphnia grazing nor by the presence of Daphnia infochemicals in comparison to the control. However, the portion of inedible S. schroeteri colonies (diameter > 50 µm) increased under direct grazing pressure, whereas the Daphnia infochemicals did not influence the colony size significantly. We conclude that the shift in colony size by direct zooplankton grazing denotes an effective defence mechanism against size selective feeding for colonial gelatinous green algae. This effective defence in combination with unchanged growth rates of the larger colonies (under non-limiting nutrient and light conditions) falsifies the assumption of a trade-off between minimising grazing losses and maximising growth by optimising the colony size. Competitive interactions have had a central place in ecological theory, dating back to Gleason, Volterra, Hutchison and MacArthur, and, more recently, Hubbell's influential unified neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography. If competitive interactions are important in driving year-to-year fluctuations in abundance, then changes in the abundance of one species should generally be accompanied by compensatory changes in the abundances of others. Thus, one necessary consequence of strong compensatory forces is that, on average, species within communities will covary negatively. Here we use measures of community covariance to assess the prevalence of negative covariance in 41 natural communities comprising different taxa at a range of spatial scales. We found that species in natural communities tended to covary positively rather than negatively, the opposite of what would be expected if compensatory dynamics were important. These findings suggest that abiotic factors such as temperature and precipitation are more important than competitive interactions in driving year-to-year fluctuations in species abundance within communities. Participants were from a longitudinal study of a birth cohort of 384 children at risk. Assessments of adolescent drug consumption as well as of individual and social determinants were obtained at age 15. Adolescents drinking and smoking during the same period (past four weeks) were characterized by more excessive and impulsive consumption and by higher rates of cannabis use. No specific determinants of concurrent use could be found. These findings suggest that adolescents displaying early concurrent tobacco and alcohol use may be at higher risk for substance use problems and should be targeted by prevention programs. Different modifications of the sensor were tested for their hemoglobin binding ability. Deoxycholate (DOCA) was found to be the most suitable among the examined modifiers. Piezoelectric quartz crystals with gold electrodes were modified with DOCA by covalent binding to a pre-formatted 4-aminothiophenol monolayer. The properties of the Hb binding to DOCA and the pH effect on this interaction were studied. In the proposed assay for glycated hemoglobin at first an Hb sample is incubated with ferroceneboronic acid (FcBA), which binds to the fructosyl residue of the glycated Hb. Then this preincubated Hb sample is allowed to interact with the DOCA-modified piezoelectric quartz crystal. The binding is monitored by quartz crystal nanobalance QCN). The amount of FcBA present on the sensor surface is determined by square wave voltammetry. The binding of FcBA results in well-defined peaks with an EO' of +200 mV versus Ag/AgC1 (1 M KC1). We investigated rainfall and throughfall chemistry in a palm-rich open tropical rainforest in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon state of Rondonia, where precipitation averages 2300 mm year(-1) with a marked seasonal pattern, and where the fragmentation of remaining forest is severe. Covering the transition from dry to wet season (TDWS) and the wet season (WS) of 2004-2005, we sampled 42 rainfall events on event basis as well as 35 events on a within-event basis, and measured concentrations of DOC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+ , Cl-, SO42- , NO3- and pH in rainfall and throughfall. We found strong evidence of both seasonal and within-event solute rainfall concentration dynamics. Seasonal volume-weighted mean (VWMS) concentrations in rainfall of DOC, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+ , SO42- and NO3- were significantly higher in the TDWS than the WS, while VWMS concentrations in throughfall were significantly higher for all solutes except DOC. Patterns were generally similar within rain events, with solute concentrations declining sharply during the first few millimeters of rainfall. Rainfall and throughfall chemistry dynamics appeared to be strongly influenced by forest and pasture burning and a regional atmosphere rich in aerosols at the end of the dry season. These seasonal and within-event patterns of rainfall and throughfall chemistry were stronger than those recorded in central Amazonia, where the dry season is less pronounced and where regional deforestation is less severe. However, the magnetic field in the photosphere is not force-free. Moreover, most methods for the extrapolation of the photospheric magnetic field into the higher layers prescribe the magnetic vector on the whole boundary of the considered volume, which overdetermines the force-free field. Finally, the extrapolation methods are very sensitive to small-scale noise in the magnetograph data, which, however, if sufficienly resolved numerically, should affect the solution only in a thin boundary layer close to the photosphere. A new method for the preprocessing of solar photospheric vector magnetograms has been developed that, by improving their compatibility with the condition of force- freeness and removing small-scale noise, makes them more suitable for extrapolations into three- dimensional nonlinear force-free magnetic fields in the chromosphere and corona. Methods. A functional of the photospheric field values is minimized whereby the total magnetic force and the total magnetic torque on the considered volume above the photosphere, as well as a quantity measuring the degree of small-scale noise in the photospheric boundary data, are simultaneously made small. For the minimization, the method of simulated annealing is used and the smoothing of noisy magnetograph data is attained by windowed median averaging. Results. The method was applied to a magnetogram derived from a known nonlinear force-free test field to which an artificial noise had been added. The algorithm recovered all main structures of the magnetogram and removed small- scale noise. The main test was to extrapolate from the noisy photospheric vector magnetogram before and after the preprocessing. In contrast, the only phospholipid in plastids, phosphatidylglycerol (PG), contains exclusively prokaryotic DAG backbones. PG contributes in several ways to the functions of chloroplasts, but it is not known to what extent its prokaryotic nature is required to fulfill these tasks. As a first step toward answering this question, we produced transgenic tobacco plants that contain eukaryotic PG in thylakoids. This was achieved by targeting a bacterial DAG kinase into chloroplasts in which the heterologous enzyme was also incorporated into the envelope fraction. From lipid analysis we conclude that the DAG kinase phosphorylated eukaryotic DAG forming phosphatidic acid, which was converted into PG. This resulted in PG with 2-3 times more eukaryotic than prokaryotic DAG backbones. In the newly formed PG the unique Delta 3-trans-double bond, normally confined to 3-transhexadecenoic acid, was also found in sn-2- bound cis-unsaturated C18 fatty acids. In addition, a lipidomics technique allowed the characterization of phosphatidic acid, which is assumed to be derived from eukaryotic DAG precursors in the chloroplasts of the transgenic plants. Results: Identified as the most important predictors for the onset of hyperactive disorders were a reduced birth weight, the mother's origin from a shattered family, early contact impairments on the part of the child, and the mother's neglect of the infant. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are the most efficient biochemical variable distinguishing between nutritional modes of Ochromonas sp. Decreasing concentrations of PUFAs were observed in the order autotrophs, mixotrophs, heterotrophs. In mixotrophs and heterotrophs, concentrations of saturated fatty acids were higher than those of monounsaturated fatty acids and PUFAs as a result of bacterivory. Stigmasterol was the main sterol in Ochromonas sp., regardless of nutritional mode. Mixotrophs showed higher growth rates than heterotrophs, which could not be explained by rct. Heterotrophs, in turn, exhibited higher growth rates than autotrophs, which were cultured under the same light conditions as mixotrophs. Mixotrophs can synthesize PUFAs, which are important for many physiological functions such as membrane permeability and growth. Thus, mixotrophy facilitated efficient growth as well as the ability to synthesize complex and essential biomolecules. In total we listed 134 hybrids which are interpreted as products of hybridisation between 81 alien and 109 native plant species (including 13 archeophytes) that occur in Germany Seventy-five of these hybrids have been recorded in Germany, while the remaining 59 hybrids have not been detected in Germany yet, although both parental species currently occur in Germany. Interspecific hybridisation between abundant alien and rare native species can threaten populations of the native species through outbreeding depression and/ or through high rates of gene flow swamping native populations. We identified 37 threatened native plant species which hybridise with aliens. Seventeen of these threatened plant species may suffer from outbreeding depression when hybridising with a more abundant alien invader (minority disadvantage). Using hybrid abundance as an indicator of hybrid fitness we argue that introgression of alien genes may affect the gene pool of eight threatened native plant species. Consequently, hybridisation with aliens has to be considered as an additional risk potentially leading to a loss of biodiversity and should be included in the repertoire of causes for rare species extinction in German Red Lists of threatened plant species. The survival of a species during large-scale changes in land use and climate will depend, to a considerable extent, on its dispersal and colonisation abilities. Predictions on species migration need a combination of field studies and modelling efforts. Our study on the ability of M. pratense to disperse into so far unoccupied areas is based on experiments in secondary woodland in NE Germany. Experiments started in 1997 at three sites where the species was not yet present, with 300 seeds sown within 1m2. Population development was then recorded until 2001 by mapping of individuals with a resolution of 5 cm. Additional observations considered density dependence of seed production. We designed a spatially explicit individual-based computer simulation model to explain the spatial patterns of population development and to predict future population spread. Besides primary drop of seeds (barochory) it assumed secondary seed transport by ants (myrmecochory) with an exponentially decreasing dispersal tail. An important feature of population-pattern explanation was the simultaneous estimation of both population-growth and dispersal parameters from consistent spatio-temporal data sets. As the simulation model produced stochastic time series and random spatially discrete distributions of individuals we estimated parameters by minimising the expectation of weighted sum of squares. These sums of squares criteria considered population sizes, radial population distributions around the area of origin and distributions of individuals within squares of 25cm×25 cm, the range of density action. Optimal parameter values, together with the precision of the estimates, were obtained from calculating sum of squares in regular grids of parameter values. Our modelling results showed that transport of fractions of seeds by ants over distances of 1-2m was indispensable for explaining the observed population spread that led to distances of at most 8mfrom population origin within 3 years. Projections of population development over four additional years gave a diffusion-like increase of population area without any "outposts". This prediction generated by the simulation model gave a hypothesis which should be revised by additional field observations. The approach is very general and flexible; thus it constitutes a base language in terms of which higher-level preferences may be defined. To this end, we investigate two fundamental types of preferences that we call choice and temporal preferences. We hypothesized an increase in Dinobryon biomass during the re-oligotrophication process in the large and deep Lake Constance. To estimate whether bacterivory contributed substantially to the flagellates' phosphorus supply, we determined ingestion rates. Dinobryon biomass increased with decreasing total phosphorus concentrations in the lake over a period of 17 years (P = 0.0005). The promotion of Dinobryon biomass during re-oligotrophication may be explained by the increasing light availability due to the decreasing biomass of other phytoplankton yielding a release from competition. The date of the Dinobryon abundance maximum shifted to earlier time points in the year, probably because a smaller phosphorus pool was depleted more quickly. Ingestion rates of Dinobryon ranged between 0.5 and 13 bacteria cell(-1) h(-1) (0.2-5.4 fg C pg C-1 h(-1)), and clearance rates varied between 0.2 and 3.2 nL cell(-1) h(-1) (4-78 pL pg C-1 h(-1)), leading to bacterial losses of up to 30% day(-1) of bacterial standing stock. The ingestion of bacteria covered 77% of the phosphorus need of the flagellate during the period of maximum growth in 1996 (net growth rate 0.34 day(-1)), and it fully covered the need at all other times. Until now especially birds and mammals have been identifi ed as potential animal dispersal vectors of fragments. This study investigates the dispersal of bryophyte and lichen fragments by red wood ants which build large nest mounds from plant material and are abundant in European coniferous forests. We sampled nest material from 25 nest mounds in fi ve different pine and spruce forest types in Germany and found numerous fragments of 20 bryophyte and ten lichen species. As they occurred on almost all studied mounds and often in large numbers we conclude that collecting cryptogam fragments as nest material is a characteristic feature for the Formica rufa group in coniferous forests. Species number and composition of fragments on mounds coincided with the epigeic vegetation around ant nests to a large extent: Almost all collected species were present in the vegetation, and dominant fragment species occurred in large amounts in the vicinity of ant nests. Lichen fragments were larger than bryophyte fragments. Certain life forms (weft-forming bryophytes, reindeer lichens) were accumulated on mounds, while others (tall turfs, cup-type Cladonia species) were discriminated, refl ecting fragmentation features of species. Collected fragments may regenerate to mature plants if nest mounds are abandoned, and especially if they are lost during transport over several metres. We conclude that dispersal of fragments by red wood ants contributes to maintain epigeic bryophyte and lichen diversity of coniferous forests by supporting colonisation after disturbances, which occur on different spatial and temporal scales.
