The aim of this study was to examine parental perceptions of the appropriate time to engage in child weight management strategies, and the factors associated with different weight points at which mothers recognize the need for preventive actions. Methods: 352 mothers with children aged 2-10 years took part in the study. We assessed mothers' perceptions of the actual and preferred weight status of their child, their ability to identify overweight and knowledge of its associated health risks, as well as perceptions of the right time for action to prevent overweight in their child. A regression analysis was conducted to examine whether demographic and weight related factors as well as the maternal general risk perception were associated with recognizing the need to implement prevention strategies. Results: Although most of the parents considered a BMI in the 75th to 90th percentile a valid reason to engage in the prevention of overweight, 19% of the mothers were not willing to engage in prevention until their child reached the 97th percentile. Whereas the child's sex and the identification of an elevated BMI were significant predictors for parents' recognition of the 75th percentile as right point to engage in prevention efforts, an inability to recognize physical health risks associated with overweight silhouettes emerged as a significant factor predicting which parents would delay prevention efforts until a child's BMI reached the 97th percentile. Conclusion: Parental misperceptions of overweight and associated health risks constitute unfavorable conditions for preventive actions. Feedback on the health risks associated with overweight could help increase maternal readiness for change. In [Ir(piq)(2)(dap)]PF6, the dap ligand and one of the piq ligands of each cationic complex are involved in pi-pi stacking interactions forming supramolecular channels running along the crystallographic c axis. In the crystalline [Ir(bzq)(2)(dap)]PF6 pi-pi stacking interactions between the metal complexes lead to the formation of a 2D layer structure. In addition, CH-pi interactions were found in all compounds, which are what stabilizes the solid structure. In particular, a significant number of them were found in [Ir(piq)(2)(dap)]PF6 and [Ir(bzq)(2)(dap)]PF6. The crystal structures of [Ir(ppy)(2)(dipdap)]PF6 and [Ir(ppy)(2)(dmedap)]PF6 are also presented, being the first examples of bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with phenanthroline-type alpha,alpha'-diimin ligands bearing bulky alkyl groups in the neighbourhood of the N-donor atoms. These ligands implicate a distorted octahedral coordination geometry that in turn destabilized the Ir-N-N boolean AND N bonds. The new iridium (III) complexes are not luminescent. All compounds show an electrochemically irreversible anodic peak between 1.15 and 1.58 V, which is influenced by the different cyclometalated ligands. All of the new complexes show two reversible successive one-electron "large-surface" ligand-centred reductions around -0.70 V and -1.30 V. Electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and collision induced decomposition (CID) measurements were used to investigate the stability of the new complexes. Very interesting surface materials are micrometer-thick polyelectrolyte multilayers. Not only their surface but also the bulk can be loaded with biomaterials like proteins or DNA for various purposes. Therefore, we established a method to analyze the lateral and vertical distribution of fluorescently labelled proteins of various size and charge in polyelectrolyte films composed of poly(L-lysine) and hyaluronic acid by confocal laser scanning microscopy. This approach enables us to measure the diffusion coefficients of the proteins via fluorescence recovery after photobleaching as a function of their vertical position in the film and facilitates the understanding of molecular interactions in the film with a high resolution in both space and time. As a result, we confirm that protein loading in the film is driven by electrostatic interactions - uncharged dextran molecules of 10 and 500 kDa do not diffuse into the film. Proteins of different sizes (3-11 nm) can diffuse relatively fast (D = 2-4 mm(2) s(-1)) independent of their net charge, indicating complex interpolymer interactions. This approach is a new powerful experimental tool to design the polyelectrolyte multilayers for bio-applications by finding a relationship between intermolecular interactions and mobility and availability of biomolecules to biological samples (e.g. cells) or detection units (e.g. biosensors). This prominence was tracked by both the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) EUVI and COR1 telescopes, and was seen to rotate about the line of sight as it erupted; therefore, the event has been nicknamed the "Cartwheel CME." The threads of the prominence in the core of the CME quite clearly indicate the structure of a weakly to moderately twisted flux rope throughout the field of view, up to heliocentric heights of 4 solar radii. Although the STEREO separation was 48A degrees, it was possible to match some sharp features in the later part of the eruption as seen in the 304 line in EUVI and in the H alpha-sensitive bandpass of COR1 by both STEREO Ahead and Behind. These features could then be traced out in three-dimensional space, and reprojected into a view in which the eruption is directed toward the observer. The reconstructed view shows that the alignment of the prominence to the vertical axis rotates as it rises up to a leading-edge height of a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 2.5 solar radii, and then remains approximately constant. The alignment at 2.5 solar radii differs by about 115A degrees from the original filament orientation inferred from H alpha and EUV data, and the height profile of the rotation, obtained here for the first time, shows that two thirds of the total rotation are reached within a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 0.5 solar radii above the photosphere. These features are well reproduced by numerical simulations of an unstable moderately twisted flux rope embedded in external flux with a relatively strong shear field component. Their resulting complex experimental data should be properly evaluated, therefore reliable normal healthy control baseline values are indispensable. Methodology/Principal Findings: To assess intra- and inter-individual variability of various biomarkers, peripheral blood of 16 age and gender equilibrated healthy volunteers was sampled on 3 different days within a period of one month. Complex "crossomics'' analyses of plasma metabolite profiles, antibody concentrations and lymphocyte subset counts as well as whole genome expression profiling in CD4(+)T and NK cells were performed. Some of the observed age, gender and BMI dependences are in agreement with the existing knowledge, like negative correlation between sex hormone levels and age or BMI related increase in lipids and soluble sugars. Thus we can assume that the distribution of all 39.743 analysed markers is well representing the normal Caucasoid population. All lymphocyte subsets, 20% of metabolites and less than 10% of genes, were identified as highly variable in our dataset. Conclusions/Significance: Our study shows that the intra- individual variability was at least two-fold lower compared to the inter-individual one at all investigated levels, showing the importance of personalised medicine approach from yet another perspective. The profound knowledge of past natural variability of floods is of utmost importance in order to assess flood risk for the future. Since instrumental flood series cover only the last ~150 years, other approaches to reconstruct historical and pre-historical flood events are needed. Annually laminated (varved) lake sediments are meaningful natural geoarchives because they provide continuous records of environmental changes > 10000 years down to a seasonal resolution. Since lake basins additionally act as natural sediment traps, the riverine sediment supply, which is preserved as detrital event layers in the lake sediments, can be used as a proxy for extreme discharge events. Within my thesis I examined a ~ 8.50 m long sedimentary record from the pre-Alpine Lake Mondsee (Northeast European Alps), which covered the last 7000 years. This sediment record consists of calcite varves and intercalated detrital layers, which range in thickness from 0.05 to 32 mm. Detrital layer deposition was analysed by a combined method of microfacies analysis via thin sections, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), μX-ray fluorescence (μXRF) scanning and magnetic susceptibility. This approach allows characterizing individual detrital event layers and assigning a corresponding input mechanism and catchment. Based on varve counting and controlled by 14C age dates, the main goals of this thesis are (i) to identify seasonal runoff processes, which lead to significant sediment supply from the catchment into the lake basin and (ii) to investigate flood frequency under changing climate boundary conditions. This thesis follows a line of different time slices, presenting an integrative approach linking instrumental and historical flood data from Lake Mondsee in order to evaluate the flood record inferred from Lake Mondsee sediments. The investigation of eleven short cores covering the last 100 years reveals the abundance of 12 detrital layers. Therein, two types of detrital layers are distinguished by grain size, geochemical composition and distribution pattern within the lake basin. Detrital layers, which are enriched in siliciclastic and dolomitic material, reveal sediment supply from the Flysch sediments and Northern Calcareous Alps into the lake basin. These layers are thicker in the northern lake basin (0.1-3.9 mm) and thinner in the southern lake basin (0.05-1.6 mm). Detrital layers, which are enriched in dolomitic components forming graded detrital layers (turbidites), indicate the provenance from the Northern Calcareous Alps. These layers are generally thicker (0.65-32 mm) and are solely recorded within the southern lake basin. In comparison with instrumental data, thicker graded layers result from local debris flow events in summer, whereas thin layers are deposited during regional flood events in spring/summer. Extreme summer floods as reported from flood layer deposition are principally caused by cyclonic activity from the Mediterranean Sea, e.g. July 1954, July 1997 and August 2002. During the last two millennia, Lake Mondsee sediments reveal two significant flood intervals with decadal-scale flood episodes, during the Dark Ages Cold Period (DACP) and the transition from the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) into the Little Ice Age (LIA) suggesting a linkage of transition to climate cooling and summer flood recurrences in the Northeastern Alps. In contrast, intermediate or decreased flood episodes appeared during the MWP and the LIA. This indicates a non-straightforward relationship between temperature and flood recurrence, suggesting higher cyclonic activity during climate transition in the Northeast Alps. The 7000-year flood chronology reveals 47 debris flows and 269 floods, with increased flood activity shifting around 3500 and 1500 varve yr BP (varve yr BP = varve years before present, before present = AD 1950). This significant increase in flood activity shows a coincidence with millennial-scale climate cooling that is reported from main Alpine glacier advances and lower tree lines in the European Alps since about 3300 cal. yr BP (calibrated years before present). Despite relatively low flood occurrence prior to 1500 varve yr BP, floods at Lake Mondsee could have also influenced human life in early Neolithic lake dwellings (5750-4750 cal. yr BP). While the first lake dwellings were constructed on wetlands, the later lake dwellings were built on piles in the water suggesting an early flood risk adaptation of humans and/or a general change of the Late Neolithic Culture of lake-dwellers because of socio-economic reasons. However, a direct relationship between the final abandonment of the lake dwellings and higher flood frequencies is not evidenced. N2 - Ein verstärktes Auftreten von Hochwassern, sowohl in ihrer Häufigkeit als auch in ihrer Frequenz, wird im Zuge der Klimaerwärmung und einer möglichen Intensivierung des hydrologischen Kreislaufs diskutiert. Die Kenntnis über die natürliche Variabilität von Hochwasserereignissen ist dabei eine grundlegende Voraussetzung, um die Hochwassergefahr für die Zukunft abschätzen zu können. Da instrumentelle Hochwasserzeitreihen meist nur die letzten 150 Jahre abbilden sind andere Methoden erforderlich, um das Auftreten von historischen und prä-historischen Hochwassern festzustellen. Jährlich laminierte (warvierte) Seesedimente sind bedeutende natürliche Archive, denn sie liefern kontinuierliche Zeitreihen > 10000 Jahre mit einer bis zur saisonalen Auflösung. Seebecken stellen natürliche Sedimentfallen dar, wobei eingetragenes Flusssediment in den Seesedimenten als eine distinkte detritische Lage aufgezeichnet wird, und daher zur Rekonstruktion von extremen Abflussereignissen genutzt werden. Im Rahmen meiner Doktorarbeit habe ich einen 8.50 m langen Sedimentkern aus dem Mondsee (Nordostalpen) untersucht, welcher die letzten 7000 Jahre abdeckt. Dieser Sedimentkern besteht aus Kalzitwarven und eingeschalteten detritischen Lagen mit einer Mächtigkeit von 0.05-32 mm. Detritische Lagen wurden mit Hilfe einer kombinierten Methode untersucht: Mikrofaziesanalyse, Rasterelektronenmikroskopie, Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (µXRF) und magnetische Suszeptibilität. Dieser Ansatz ermöglicht die Charakterisierung der einzelnen detritischen Lagen bezüglich der Eintragsprozesse und die Lokalisierung des Einzugsgebietes. Auf Grundlage der Warvenzählung und 14C Datierungen sind die wichtigsten Ziele dieser Arbeit: (i) die Identifizierung der Eintragsprozesse, welche zu einem Sedimenteintrag vom Einzugsgebiet bis in den See führen und (ii) die Rekonstruktion der Hochwasserfrequenz unter veränderten Klimabedingungen. Diese Arbeit zeigt eine Untersuchung auf verschiedenen Zeitscheiben, wobei instrumentelle und historische Daten genutzt werden, um die Aufzeichnung von pre-historischen Hochwasser in den Mondseesedimenten besser zu verstehen. Innerhalb der letzten 100 Jahre wurden zwölf Abflussereignisse aufgezeichnet. Zwei Typen von detritschen Lagen können anhand von Korngröße, geochemischer Zusammensetzung und des Verteilungsmusters unterschieden werden. Detritische Lagen, welche aus siliziklastischen und dolomitischen Material bestehen, zeigen eine Sedimentherkunft vom Teileinzugsgebiet des Flysch (nördliches Einzugsgebiet) und der Nördlichen Kalkalpen (südliches Teileinzugsgebiet) auf. Diese Lagen sind im Nördlichen Becken mächtiger (0.1-3.9 mm) als im südlichen Seebecken (0.05-1.6 mm). Detritische Lagen, welche nur aus dolomitischem Material bestehen und Turbititlagen aufzeigen (0.65-32 mm), weisen auf eine Herkunft aus den Nördlichen Kalkalpen hin. Im Vergleich mit instrumentellen Zeitreihen, stammen die mächtigeren Lagen von lokalen Murereignissen im Sommer und feinere Eintragslagen von regionalen Frühjahrs- und Sommerhochwassern. Extreme Sommerhochwasser am Mondsee werden hauptsächlich durch Zyklonen vom Mittelmeer ausgelöst, z.B. Juli 1954, Juli 1997 und August 2002. Die Untersuchung des langen Sedimentkerns vom Mondsee zeigt während der letzten 2000 Jahre signifikante Hochwasserintervalle mit dekadischen Hochwasserepisoden während der Völkerwanderungszeit und im Übergang vom Mittelalter in die Kleine Eiszeit. Dies weist auf eine Verknüpfung von Abkühlungsphasen und Sommerhochwassern im Nordostalpenraum hin. Während der Mittelalterlichen Wärmephase und in der Kleinen Eiszeit kam es jedoch zu einer geringeren Hochwasseraktivität. Dies zeigt einen komplexen Zusammenhang von Temperaturentwicklung und Hochwasseraktivität in den Nordostalpen, mit einer erhöhten Zyklonenaktivät in den Übergängen von wärmeren zu kälteren Phasen. Während der letzten 7000 Jahre wurden 47 Muren und 269 Hochwasser aufgezeichnet, wobei es eine signifikante Änderung mit erhöhter Häufigkeit um 3500 und 1500 Warvenjahre v. h. gab (v.h. = vor heute = AD 1950). Diese signifikante Änderung stimmt mit einem langfristigem Abkühlungstrend überein, welcher durch alpine Gletschervorstöße und das Absinken von Baumgrenzen seit etwa 3300 Warvenjahre v.h. berichtet wird. Trotz relativ geringer Hochwasseraktivität um 1500 Warvenjahre v.h., könnte das Auftreten von Hochwasser auch das Leben Menschen in Neolithischen Pfahlbausiedlungen (5750-4750 cal. yr BP) beeinflusst haben. Während die ersten Pfahlbauten noch als Feuchtbodensiedlungen am Land entstanden, wurden spätere Siedlungen eventuell als Anpassung an stark schwankenden Seewasserspiegeln auf Pfählen im Wasser gebaut und/oder zeigen eine allgemeine Veränderung der Siedlungsaktivitäten der Neolithischen Pfahlbaukultur an, aufgrund sozio-ökonomischer Veränderungen. Ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen dem Verlassen der Pfahlbausiedlungen und einer erhöhten Hochwasseraktivität konnte jedoch nicht festgestellt werden. They can play an important role in streamflow rates, groundwater recharge, freshwater supply and channel-associated ecosystems. We aim to develop a process-oriented, semi-distributed channel transmission losses model, using process formulations which are suitable for data-scarce dryland environments and applicable to both hydraulically disconnected losing streams and hydraulically connected losing(/gaining) streams. This approach should be able to cover a large variation in climate and hydro-geologic controls, which are typically found in dryland regions of the Earth. Our model was first evaluated for a losing/gaining, hydraulically connected 30 km reach of the Middle Jaguaribe River (MJR), Ceara, Brazil, which drains a catchment area of 20 000 km(2). Secondly, we applied it to a small losing, hydraulically disconnected 1.5 km channel reach in the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW), Arizona, USA. The model was able to predict reliably the streamflow volume and peak for both case studies without using any parameter calibration procedure. We have shown that the evaluation of the hypotheses on the dominant hydrological processes was fundamental for reducing structural model uncertainties and improving the streamflow prediction. For instance, in the case of the large river reach (MJR), it was shown that both lateral stream-aquifer water fluxes and groundwater flow in the underlying alluvium parallel to the river course are necessary to predict streamflow volume and channel transmission losses, the former process being more relevant than the latter. Regarding model uncertainty, it was shown that the approaches, which were applied for the unsaturated zone processes (highly nonlinear with elaborate numerical solutions), are much more sensitive to parameter variability than those approaches which were used for the saturated zone (mathematically simple water budgeting in aquifer columns, including backwater effects). In case of the MJR-application, we have seen that structural uncertainties due to the limited knowledge of the subsurface saturated system interactions (i.e. groundwater coupling with channel water; possible groundwater flow parallel to the river) were more relevant than those related to the subsurface parameter variability. In case of the WEGW application we have seen that the non-linearity involved in the unsaturated flow processes in disconnected dryland river systems (controlled by the unsaturated zone) generally contain far more model uncertainties than do connected systems controlled by the saturated flow. Therefore, the degree of aridity of a dryland river may be an indicator of potential model uncertainty and subsequent attainable predictability of the system. A comparative and model-based methodological approach has been developed and applied for three meso-scale catchments located in different European hydro-climatological regions: Poyo (184 km(2)) in the Spanish Mediterranean, Upper Iller (954 km(2)) in the German Alps and Kamp (621 km(2)) in Northeast-Austria representing the Continental hydro-climate. This comparative analysis has found general similarities in spite of the particular differences among studied areas. In general terms, the flood reduction through the concept of "retaining water in the landscape" depends on the following factors: the storage capacity increase in the catchment resulting from such measures, the characteristics of the rainfall event, the antecedent soil moisture condition and the spatial distribution of such flood management measures in the catchment. In general, our study has shown that, this concept is effective for small and medium events, but almost negligible for the largest and less frequent floods: this holds true for all different hydro-climatic regions, and with different land-use, soils and morphological settings. Male Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana exhibit weaker mating preferences when an audience male is presented. This could be a male strategy to reduce sperm competition risk: interacting more equally with different females may be advantageous because rivals might copy mate choice decisions. In line with this hypothesis, a previous study found males to show a strong audience effect when being observed while exercising mate choice, but not when the rival was presented only before the choice tests. Audience effects on mate choice decisions have been quantified in poeciliid fishes using association preference designs, but it remains unknown if patterns found from measuring association times translate into actual mating behavior. Thus, we created five audience treatments simulating different forms of perceived sperm competition risk and determined focal males' mating preferences by scoring pre-mating (nipping) and mating behavior (gonopodial thrusting). Nipping did not reflect the pattern that was found when association preferences were measured, while a very similar pattern was uncovered in thrusting behavior. The strongest response was observed when the audience could eavesdrop on the focal male's behavior. A reduction in the strength of focal males' preferences was also seen after the rival male had an opportunity to mate with the focal male's preferred mate. In comparison, the reduction of mating preferences in response to an audience was greater when measuring association times than actual mating behavior. While measuring direct sexual interactions between the focal male and both stimulus females not only the male's motivational state is reflected but also females' behavior such as avoidance of male sexual harassment. To validate the wind model, a series of experiments was conducted in a wind tunnel. A blocking inflow experiment was designed to test the performance of the model on simulation of basic fluid processes. A round obstacle experiment was designed to check if the model could simulate the influences of the obstacle on wind field. Results show that measured and simulated wind fields have high correlations, and the wind model can simulate both the basic processes of the wind and the influences of the obstacle on the wind field. These results show the high reliability of the wind model. A digital elevation model (DEM) of an area (3800 m long and 1700 m wide) in the Xilingele grassland in Inner Mongolia (autonomous region, China) was applied to the model, and a 3D wind field has been successfully generated. The clear implementation of the model and the adequate validation by wind tunnel experiments laid a solid foundation for the prediction and assessment of wind erosion at regional scale. It is noteworthy, that at all times, the majority of the baryons in the universe does not reside in the dense halos but in the filaments and the sheets of the intergalactic medium. While at higher redshifts of z > 2, these baryons can be detected via the absorption of light (originating from more distant sources) by neutral hydrogen at temperatures of T ~ 10^4 K (the Lyman-alpha forest), at lower redshifts only about 20 % can be found in this state. The remain (about 50 to 70 % of the total baryons mass) is unaccounted for by observational means. Numerical simulations predict that these missing baryons could reside in the filaments and sheets of the cosmic web at high temperatures of T = 10^4.5 - 10^7 K, but only at low to intermediate densities, and constitutes the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). The high temperatures of the WHIM are caused by the formation of shocks and the subsequent shock-heating of the gas. This results in a high degree of ionization and renders the reliable detection of the WHIM a challenging task. Recent high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations indicate that, at redshifts of z ~ 2, filaments are able to provide very massive galaxies with a significant amount of cool gas at temperatures of T ~ 10^4 K. This could have an important impact on the star-formation in those galaxies. It is therefore of principle importance to investigate the particular hydro- and thermodynamical conditions of these large filament structures. Density and temperature profiles, and velocity fields, are expected to leave their special imprint on spectroscopic observations. A potential multiphase structure may act as tracer in observational studies of the WHIM. In the context of cold streams, it is important to explore the processes, which regulate the amount of gas transported by the streams. This includes the time evolution of filaments, as well as possible quenching mechanisms. In this context, the halo mass range in which cold stream accretion occurs is of particular interest. In order to address these questions, we perform particular hydrodynamical simulations of very high resolution, and investigate the formation and evolution of prototype structures representing the typical filaments and sheets of the WHIM. We start with a comprehensive study of the one-dimensional collapse of a sinusoidal density perturbation (pancake formation) and examine the influence of radiative cooling, heating due to an UV background, thermal conduction, and the effect of small-scale perturbations given by the cosmological power spectrum. We use a set of simulations, parametrized by the wave length of the initial perturbation L. For L ~ 2 Mpc/h the collapse leads to shock-confined structures. As a result of radiative cooling and of heating due to an UV background, a relatively cold and dense core forms. With increasing L the core becomes denser and more concentrated. Thermal conduction enhances this trend and may lead to an evaporation of the core at very large L ~ 30 Mpc/h. When extending our simulations into three dimensions, instead of a pancake structure, we obtain a configuration consisting of well-defined sheets, filaments, and a gaseous halo. For L > 4 Mpc/h filaments form, which are fully confined by an accretion shock. As with the one-dimensional pancakes, they exhibit an isothermal core. Thus, our results confirm a multiphase structure, which may generate particular spectral tracers. We find that, after its formation, the core becomes shielded against further infall of gas onto the filament, and its mass content decreases with time. In the vicinity of the halo, the filament's core can be attributed to the cold streams found in other studies. We show, that the basic structure of these cold streams exists from the very beginning of the collapse process. Further on, the cross section of the streams is constricted by the outwards moving accretion shock of the halo. Thermal conduction leads to a complete evaporation of the cold stream for L > 6 Mpc/h. This corresponds to halos with a total mass higher than M_halo = 10^13 M_sun, and predicts that in more massive halos star-formation can not be sustained by cold streams. Far away from the gaseous halo, the temperature gradients in the filament are not sufficiently strong for thermal conduction to be effective. N2 - Im Rahmen der kosmologischen Strukturbildung entstehen durch Gravitationsinstabilitäten Flächen, Filamente und schließlich Halos. Interessanterweise befinden sich zu jedem Zeitpunkt der kosmologischen Entwicklung der Großteil der Baryonen nicht in den Halos, sondern in den Filamenten und Ebenen des intergalaktischen Mediums. Während diese Baryonen bei höheren Rotverschiebungen (z ~ 2) noch in Form durch die Absorbtion von Licht (von weit entfernteren Quellen) durch neutralen Wasserstoff bei einer Temperatur von T ~ 10^4 K beobachtbar sind (Lyman-Alpha Wald), gilt dies bei niedrigeren Rotverschiebungen für nur noch ca. 20 % der Baryonen. Der überwiegende Teil (ca. 50-70 % der gesamten baryonischen Masse) sind bisher noch nicht direkt beobachtbar. Numerische Simulationen sagen jedoch voraus, das sich diese Baryonen in den Filamenten und Flächen des kosmischen Netzes befinden. Die entsprechende Gasverteilung zeichnet sich durch hohe Temperaturen T = 10^5 - 10^7 K und geringe bis mittlere Dichten aus und wird als warm-heißes intergalaktisches Medium (WHIM) bezeichnet. Die hohen Temperaturen entstehen in Folge der Bildung von Stoßwellen und der darauf folgenden Erhitzung des Gases (shock-heating). Das WHIM ist daher hochgradig ionisiert und sein verlässlicher Nachweis stellt eine große Herausforderung für die beobachtende Kosmologie dar. Neuere hydrodynamische Simulationen zeigen, dass sich bei höheren Rotverschiebungen von z ~ 2 Gasströmungen entlang der Filamente bilden, die massive Galaxien mit erheblichen Mengen an relativ kaltem Gas (T ~ 10^4 K) versorgen können. Dies hätte einen erheblichen Einfluss auf die Sternentstehung in diesen Galaxien. Es ist daher von grundsätzlichem Interesse, die spezifischen hydro- und thermodynamischen Bedingungen in den Strukturen des WHIM zu untersuchen. Sowohl Dichte- und Temperaturprofile als auch Geschwindigkeitsfelder prägen spektroskopische Beobachtungen. Eine mögliche Mehrphasenstruktur des WHIM könnte daher als Indikator in beobachtenden Studien dienen. Im Zusammenhang mit den kalten Strömen ist es besonders interessant, Prozesse zu untersuchen die den Zufluss von kaltem Gas zu den Galaxien regulieren. Dies umfasst die Zeitentwicklung des Anteils an kaltem Gas in den Filamenten, sowie mögliche Mechanismen, die zum Versiegen des Zuflusses von kaltem Gas auf die Galaxienscheibe führen. Um diese Zusammenhänge zu erforschen, führen wir spezielle hydrodynamische Simulationen mit sehr hoher Auflösung durch, die zu ausgewählten, wohldefinierten Strukturen führen, die das WHIM charakterisieren. Wir beginnen mit einer ausführlichen Untersuchung des eindimensionalen Kollaps einer sinusförmigen Störung (pancake formation). Hierbei untersuchen wir den Einfluss von Strahlungkühlung, Heizung durch den intergalaktischen UV Hintergrund, Wärmeleitung, sowie von kleinskaligen Störungen, welche dem kosmologischen Störungsspektrum folgen. Wir benutzen hierbei eine Reihe von Simulationen, welche die Längenskala der anfänglichen Störung L als Parameter verwenden. Für L ~ 2 Mpc/h führt der Kollaps zur Ausbildung einer Stoßwelle. Zusätzlich entsteht als Folge der Strahlungskühlung und der Heizung durch den UV Hintergrund ein relativ dichter und kalter isothermer Kern. Mit ansteigendem L wird dieser Kern dichter und kompakter. Durch Wärmeleitung reduziert sich die räumliche Ausdehnung des Kerns. Für L ~ 30 Mpc/h führt dies zu einem Verschwinden des Kerns. Mit der Erweiterung unserer Methodik auf dreidimensionale Simulationen, entsteht nun eine Konfiguration, welche aus wohldefinierten Flächen, Filamenten und einem gasförmigen Halo besteht. Für L > 4 Mpc/h, erhalten wir Filamente, die vollständig durch Akkretionsschocks begrenzt sind. Wie in unseren eindimensionalen Simulationen weisen auch sie einen isothermen Kern auf. Dies legt nahe, dass das WHIM eine Mehrphasenstruktur besitzt und mögliche Spektralsignaturen erzeugen kann. Nach seiner Entstehung ist der Kern gegen weiteren Zufluss von Gas abgeschirmt und seine Masse reduziert sich mit der Zeit. In der direkten Umgebung des Halos entspricht der Kern des Filamentes den oben angesprochenen kalten Strömen. Unsere Untersuchung zeigt, dass diese während der gesamten Entwicklung des Halos existent sind. In der weiteren Entwicklung werden sie durch den expandierenden Akkretionsschock des Halos verengt. Ab einer Skala von L > 6 Mpc/h kann Wärmeleitung zu einem Verschwinden des Zustroms von kaltem Gas führen. Diese Skala entspricht Halos mit einer Gesamtmasse von M_halo = 10^13 M_sun. Galaxien, die sich in noch massiveren Halos bilden, können daher nicht durch kalte Ströme mit Gas für die Sternentstehung versorgt werden. Im Filament, weit außerhalb des gasförmigen Halos, sind die Temperaturgradienten zu klein, um effiziente Wärmeleitung zu ermöglichen. Therefore, numerous studies aim to identify reliable risk markers for development of impaired glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes. However, the molecular basis of impaired glucose metabolism is so far insufficiently understood. The development of so called 'omics' approaches in the recent years promises to identify molecular markers and to further understand the molecular basis of impaired glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes. Although univariate statistical approaches are often applied, we demonstrate here that the application of multivariate statistical approaches is highly recommended to fully capture the complexity of data gained using high-throughput methods. Methods We took blood plasma samples from 172 subjects who participated in the prospective Metabolic Syndrome Berlin Potsdam follow-up study (MESY-BEPO Follow-up). We analysed these samples using Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and measured 286 metabolites. Furthermore, fasting glucose levels were measured using standard methods at baseline, and after an average of six years. We did correlation analysis and built linear regression models as well as Random Forest regression models to identify metabolites that predict the development of fasting glucose in our cohort. Results We found a metabolic pattern consisting of nine metabolites that predicted fasting glucose development with an accuracy of 0.47 in tenfold cross-validation using Random Forest regression. We also showed that adding established risk markers did not improve the model accuracy. However, external validation is eventually desirable. Although not all metabolites belonging to the final pattern are identified yet, the pattern directs attention to amino acid metabolism, energy metabolism and redox homeostasis. Conclusions We demonstrate that metabolites identified using a high-throughput method (GC-MS) perform well in predicting the development of fasting plasma glucose over several years. Notably, not single, but a complex pattern of metabolites propels the prediction and therefore reflects the complexity of the underlying molecular mechanisms. This result could only be captured by application of multivariate statistical approaches. Therefore, we highly recommend the usage of statistical methods that seize the complexity of the information given by high-throughput methods. The analysis is based on a static simulation model for the German tax system using income tax micro-data. The data shows that changing the present progressive tax system to a flat-tax, which was proposed by the FDP in 2010, could reduce the tax revenue by 15 billion Euro. Such a tax regime would increase the unequal distribution and polarisation of net incomes. The IW Koln suggested an alternative tax rate in 2008. This regime would increase unequal distribution and polarisation of disposable incomes to a greater extent than the FDP-tax rate. An implementation of this income tax scale would go along with losses in tax revenue of 18.8 billion Euro. Likewise, the implementation of a 2009 SPD tax rate proposal would reduce tax revenue by 14.8 billion Euro. Although this regime would reduce unequal distribution, the effect on the polarization of disposable incomes is not definitely predictable. In contrast to all the other scenarios, the realisation of the recent SPD tax rate proposal from 2011 could enlarge tax revenue by 4.7 billion Euro. The protocols are simple, sustainable and environmentally friendly because the processes are conducted in ILs as harmless non-toxic green solvent materials. This paper reviews the evidence for such "embodiment" in the domain of numerical cognition, a traditional stronghold of abstract theories of knowledge representation. The focus is on spatial-numerical associations, such as the SNARC effect (small numbers are associated with left space, larger numbers with right space). Using empirical evidence from behavioral research, I first describe sensory and motor biases induced by SNARC, thus identifying numbers as embodied concepts. Next, I propose a hierarchical relationship between grounded, embodied, and situated aspects of number knowledge. This hierarchical conceptualization helps to understand the variety of SNARC-related findings and yields testable predictions about numerical cognition. I report several such tests, ranging from cross-cultural comparisons of horizontal and vertical SNARC effects (Shaki and Fischer in J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform 38(3): 804-809, 2012) to motor cortical activation studies in adults with left- and right-hand counting preferences (Tschentscher et al. in NeuroImage 59: 3139-3148, 2012). It is concluded that the diagnostic features for each level of the proposed hierarchical knowledge representation, together with the spatial associations of numbers, make the domain of numerical knowledge an ideal testing ground for embodied cognition research. Furthermore we provide unpublished data underscoring the requirement of posttranslational CaaX-box processing for proper protein localization at the nuclear envelope. Sequence comparison of NE81 sequences from four Dictyostelia with bona fide lamins illustrates the evolutional relationship between these proteins. Under certain conditions these usually unicellular social amoebae congregate to form a multicellular body. We propose that the evolution of the lamin-like NE81 went along with the invention of multicellularity. Four tracer transport processes following Gnanadesikan in Science 283(5410):2077-2079, (1999) allow for a dynamical adjustment of the oceanic pycnocline which defines the vertical extent of a mid-latitudinal box. At the same time the model captures the salt-advection feedback (Stommel in Tellus 13(2):224-230, (1961)). Due to its simplicity the model can be solved analytically in the purely wind- and purely mixing-driven cases. We find the possibility of abrupt transition in response to surface freshwater forcing in both cases even though the circulations are very different in physics and geometry. This analytical approach also provides expressions for the critical freshwater input marking the change in the dynamics of the system. Our analysis shows that including the pycnocline dynamics in a salt-advection model causes a decrease in the freshwater sensitivity of its northern sinking up to a threshold at which the circulation breaks down. Compared to previous studies the model is restricted to the essential ingredients. Still, it exhibits a rich behavior which reaches beyond the scope of this study and might be used as a paradigm for the qualitative behaviour of the Atlantic overturning in the discussion of driving mechanisms. Compared with a complete gold surface, only 40% of the amount of antibodies was bound to the nanospot surface, but structured such that 15-fold higher sensitivity to vital cancer cells was achieved. Human cancer cell lines JEG-3 (lmphoblastic leukemia) and MOLT-17 (placental choriocarcinoma) from cell cultures were successfully detected. The sensor showed significant responses on less than 10 cells injected in a single run. Often SNP are used because of their antibacterial properties. Besides that they possess unique optic and catalytic features, making them highly interesting for the creation of novel and advanced functional materials. Despite its widespread use only little data exist in terms of possible adverse effects of SNP on human health. Conventional synthesis routes usually yield products of varying quality and property. It thus may become puzzling to compare biological data from different studies due to the great variety in sizes, coatings or shapes of the particles applied. Here, we applied a novel synthesis approach to obtain SNP of well-defined colloidal and structural properties. Being stabilized by a covalently linked small peptide, these particles are nicely homogenous, with narrow size distribution, and form monodisperse suspensions in aqueous solutions. We applied these peptide-coated SNP in two different sizes of 20 or 40 nm (Ag20Pep and Ag40Pep) and analyzed responses of THP-1-derived human macrophages while being exposed against these particles. Gold nanoparticles of similar size and coating (Au20Pep) were used for comparison. The cytotoxicity of particles was assessed by WST-1 and LDH assays, and the uptake into the cells was confirmed via transmission electron microscopy. In summary, our data demonstrate that this novel type of SNP is well suited to serve as model system for nanoparticles to be tested in toxicological studies in vitro. The Lorentz force due to the external shear-field component and the relaxation of tension in the twisted field are the major contributors to the rotation in this model, while reconnection with the ambient field is of minor importance, due to the field's simple structure. In the low-beta corona, the rotation is not guided by the changing orientation of the vertical field component's polarity inversion line with height. The model yields strong initial rotations which saturate in the corona and differ qualitatively from the profile of rotation vs. height obtained in a recent simulation of an eruption without preexisting flux rope. Both major mechanisms writhe the flux rope axis, converting part of the initial twist helicity, and produce rotation profiles which, to a large part, are very similar within a range of shear-twist combinations. A difference lies in the tendency of twist-driven rotation to saturate at lower heights than shear-driven rotation. For parameters characteristic of the source regions of erupting filaments and coronal mass ejections, the shear field is found to be the dominant origin of rotations in the corona and to be required if the rotation reaches angles of order 90 degrees and higher; it dominates even if the twist exceeds the threshold of the helical kink instability. The contributions by shear and twist to the total rotation can be disentangled in the analysis of observations if the rotation and rise profiles are simultaneously compared with model calculations. The resulting twist estimate allows one to judge whether the helical kink instability occurred. This is demonstrated for the erupting prominence in the "Cartwheel CME" on 9 April 2008, which has shown a rotation of a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 115(a similar to) up to a height of 1.5 R (aS (TM)) above the photosphere. Out of a range of initial equilibria which include strongly kink-unstable (twist I broken vertical bar=5 pi), weakly kink-unstable (I broken vertical bar=3.5 pi), and kink-stable (I broken vertical bar=2.5 pi) configurations, only the evolution of the weakly kink-unstable flux rope matches the observations in their entirety. In grasslands, land use is often classified by categorical descriptors such as pastures versus meadows or fertilized versus unfertilized sites. However, to account for the quantitative variation of multiple land-use types in heterogeneous landscapes, a quantitative, continuous index of land-use intensity (LUI) is desirable. Here we define such a compound, additive LUI index for managed grasslands including meadows and pastures. The LUI index summarizes the standardized intensity of three components of land use, namely fertilization, mowing, and livestock grazing at each site. We examined the performance of the LUI index to predict selected response variables on up to 150 grassland sites in the Biodiversity Exploratories in three regions in Germany(Alb, Hainich, Schorlheide). We tested the average Ellenberg nitrogen indicator values of the plant community, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in the aboveground plant biomass, plant-available phosphorus concentration in the top soil, and soil C/N ratio, and the first principle component of these five response variables. The LUI index significantly predicted the principal component of all five response variables, as well as some of the individual responses. Moreover, vascular plant diversity decreased significantly with LUI in two regions (Alb and Hainich). Inter-annual changes in management practice were pronounced from 2006 to 2008, particularly due to variation in grazing intensity. This rendered the selection of the appropriate reference year(s) an important decision for analyses of land-use effects, whereas details in the standardization of the index were of minor importance. We also tested several alternative calculations of a LUI index, but all are strongly linearly correlated to the proposed index. The proposed LUI index reduces the complexity of agricultural practices to a single dimension and may serve as a baseline to test how different groups of organisms and processes respond to land use. In combination with more detailed analyses, this index may help to unravel whether and how land-use intensities, associated disturbance levels or other local or regional influences drive ecological processes. We present new optical spectroscopy from the Very Large Telescope which reveals Sk 183 to be one of the most massive O-type stars in the SMC. Classified as an O3-type dwarf on the basis of its nitrogen spectrum, the star also displays broadened He I absorption, which suggests a later type. We propose that Sk 183 has a composite spectrum and that it is similar to another star in the SMC, MPG 324. This brings the number of rare O2- and O3-type stars known in the whole of the SMC to a mere four. We estimate physical parameters for Sk 183 from analysis of its spectrum. For a single-star model, we estimate an effective temperature of 46 +/- 2 kK, a low mass-loss rate of similar to 10(-7) M-circle dot yr(-1), and a spectroscopic mass of 46(-8)(+ 9) M-circle dot (for an adopted distance modulus of 18.7 mag to the young population in the SMC Wing). An illustrative binary model requires a slightly hotter temperature (similar to 47.5 kK) for the primary component. In either scenario, Sk 183 is the earliest-type star known in N90 and will therefore be the dominant source of hydrogen-ionizing photons. This suggests Sk 183 is the primary influence on the star formation along the inner edge of the nebula. In order to allow consistent inference of the volcanic activity state from the observed seismicity patterns, objective and time-invariant classification results achievable by automatic systems should be preferred. Most automatic classification approaches need a large preclassified data set for training the system. However, in case of a volcanic crisis, we are often confronted with a lack of training data due to insufficient prior observations. In the worst case (e. g., volcanic crisis related reconfiguration of stations), there are even no prior observations available. Finally, due to the imminent crisis there might be no time for the time-consuming process of preparing a training data set. For this reason, we have developed a novel seismic-event spotting technique in order to be less dependent on previously acquired data bases and classification schemes. We are using a learning-while-recording approach based on a minimum number of reference waveforms, thus allowing for the build-up of a classification scheme as early as interesting events have been identified. First, short-term wave-field parameters (here, polarization and spectral attributes) are extracted from a continuous seismic data stream. The sequence of multidimensional feature vectors is then used to identify a fixed number of clusters in the feature space. Based on this general description of the overall wave field by a mixture of multivariate Gaussians, we are able to learn particular event classifiers (here, hidden Markov models) from a single waveform example. To show the capabilities of this new approach we apply the algorithm to a data set recorded at Soufriere Hills volcano, Montserrat. Supported by very high classification rates, we conclude that the suggested approach provides a valuable tool for volcano monitoring systems. Both reliably projecting India's future precipitation and unraveling abrupt cessations of monsoon rainfall found in paleorecords require improved understanding of its stability properties. While details of monsoon circulations and the associated rainfall are complex, full-season failure is dominated by large-scale positive feedbacks within the region. Here we find that in a comprehensive climate model, monsoon failure is possible but very rare under pre-industrial conditions, while under future warming it becomes much more frequent. We identify the fundamental intraseasonal feedbacks that are responsible for monsoon failure in the climate model, relate these to observational data, and build a statistically predictive model for such failure. This model provides a simple dynamical explanation for future changes in the frequency distribution of seasonal mean all-Indian rainfall. Forced only by global mean temperature and the strength of the Pacific Walker circulation in spring, it reproduces the trend as well as the multidecadal variability in the mean and skewness of the distribution, as found in the climate model. The approach offers an alternative perspective on large-scale monsoon variability as the result of internal instabilities modulated by pre-seasonal ambient climate conditions. Here, we derive a statistical model that quantitatively describes the chemotactic motion of eukaryotic cells in a chemical gradient. Our model is based on observations of the chemotactic motion of the social ameba Dictyostelium discoideum, a model organism for eukaryotic chemotaxis. A large number of cell trajectories in stationary, linear chemoattractant gradients is measured, using microfluidic tools in combination with automated cell tracking. We describe the directional motion as the interplay between deterministic and stochastic contributions based on a Langevin equation. The functional form of this equation is directly extracted from experimental data by angle-resolved conditional averages. It contains quadratic deterministic damping and multiplicative noise. In the presence of an external gradient, the deterministic part shows a clear angular dependence that takes the form of a force pointing in gradient direction. With increasing gradient steepness, this force passes through a maximum that coincides with maxima in both speed and directionality of the cells. The stochastic part, on the other hand, does not depend on the orientation of the directional cue and remains independent of the gradient magnitude. Numerical simulations of our probabilistic model yield quantitative agreement with the experimental distribution functions. Thus our model captures well the dynamics of chemotactic cells and can serve to quantify differences and similarities of different chemotactic eukaryotes. Finally, on the basis of our model, we can characterize the heterogeneity within a population of chemotactic cells. High partial pressure of dissolved gasses plays an important role in microbial metabolism, because thermodynamic feasibility of many reactions depends on the concentration of reactants. For gases, this is controlled by their partial pressure, which can exceed 1 MPa at in situ conditions. Therefore, high hydrostatic pressure alone is not sufficient to recreate true deep subsurface in situ conditions, but the partial pressure of dissolved gasses has to be controlled as well. We developed an incubation system that allows for incubations at hydrostatic pressure up to 60 MPa, temperatures up to 120 degrees C, and at high gas partial pressure. The composition and partial pressure of gasses can be manipulated during the experiment. To keep costs low, the system is mainly made from off-the-shelf components with only very few custommade parts. A flexible and inert PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) incubator sleeve, which is almost impermeable for gases, holds the sample and separates it from the pressure fluid. The flexibility of the incubator sleeve allows for sub-sampling of the medium without loss of pressure. Experiments can be run in both static and flow-through mode. The incubation system described here is usable for versatile purposes, not only the incubation of microorganisms and determination of growth rates, but also for chemical degradation or extraction experiments under high gas saturation, e.g., fluid-gas-rock-interactions in relation to carbon dioxide sequestration. As an application of the system we extracted organic compounds from sub-bituminous coal using H2O as well as a H2O-CO2 mixture at elevated temperature (90 degrees C) and pressure (5 MPa). Subsamples were taken at different time points during the incubation and analyzed by ion chromatography. Furthermore we demonstrated the applicability of the system for studies of microbial activity, using samples from the Isis mud volcano. The paper describes the fabrication and various properties of molecularly grafted silicone elastomer films. This was achieved by addition of high-dipole molecular co-substituents to off-the-shelf silicone elastomer kits, Elastosil RT 625 and Sylgard 184 by Wacker and Dow Corning, respectively. Strong push-pull dipoles were chemically grafted to both polymer networks during a one step film formation process. All manufactured films were characterized using (13) C-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming a successful attachment of the dipoles to the silicone network. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that grafted dipoles were distributed homogeneously throughout the material avoiding the formation of nano-scale aggregates. The permittivity increased with the amount of dipole at all frequencies, while the Young's modulus and electrical breakdown strength were reduced. Actuation strain measurements in the pure shear configuration independently confirmed the increase in electromechanical sensitivity. The ability to enhance electromechanical properties of off-the-shelf materials could strongly expand the range of actuator properties available to researchers and end-users. The Laacher See Tephra (LST), at the base of the studied interval, forms the tephrochronological anchor point. The fine laminations were examined using a combination of micro-facies and mu XRF analyses and are typical of calcite varves, which in this case provide mainly a warm season signal. Two varve types with different sub-layer structures have been distinguished: (I) complex varves consisting of up to four seasonal sub-layers formed during the Allered and early Holocene periods, and, (II) simple two sub-layer type varves only occurring during the Younger Dryas. The precision of the chronology has been improved by varve-to-varve comparison of two independently analyzed sediment profiles based on well-defined micro-marker layers. This has enabled both (1) the precise location of single missing varies in one of the sediment profiles, and, (2) the verification of varve interpolation in disturbed varve intervals in the parallel core. Inter-annual and decadal-scale variability in sediment deposition processes were traced by multi-proxy data series including seasonal layer thickness, high-resolution element scans and total organic and inorganic carbon data at a five-varve resolution. These data support the idea of a two-phase Younger Dryas, with the first interval (12,675-12,275 varve years BP) characterised by a still significant but gradually decreasing warm-season calcite precipitation and a second phase (12,275-11,690 varve years BP) with only weak calcite precipitation. Our fiducial model, which includes radiative cooling by heavy elements and feedback by supernovae and active galactic nuclei, predicts that by z = 0.25 nearly 60?per cent of the gas mass ends up at densities and temperatures characteristic of the WHIM and we find that half of this fraction is due to outflows. The standard H?i observables (distribution of H?i column densities NH?I, distribution of Doppler parameters bHI, bHINH?I correlation) and the BLA line number density predicted by our simulations are in remarkably good agreement with observations. BLAs arise in gas that is hotter, more highly ionized and more enriched than the gas giving rise to typical Lya forest absorbers. The majority of the BLAs arise in warm-hot [log?(T/?K) similar to 5] gas at low (log?? < 1.5) overdensities. On average, thermal broadening accounts for at least 60?per cent of the BLA linewidth, which in turn can be used as a rough indicator of the thermal state of the gas. Detectable BLAs account for only a small fraction of the true baryon content of the WHIM at low redshift. In order to detect the bulk of the mass in this gas phase, a sensitivity at least one order of magnitude better than achieved by current ultraviolet spectrographs is required. We argue that BLAs mostly trace gas that has been shock heated and enriched by outflows and that they therefore provide an important window on a poorly understood feedback process. Thus, we investigated the metabolic adjustment and modulation of gene expression in response to changes in growth of plants imposed by varying the GA regime in ambient and elevated [CO2]. In the presence of PAC (low-GA regime), the activities of enzymes involved in photosynthesis and inorganic nitrogen assimilation were markedly increased at elevated [CO2], whereas the activities of enzymes of organic acid metabolism were decreased. Under ambient [CO2], nitrate, amino acids, and protein accumulated upon PAC treatment; however, this was not the case when plants were grown at elevated [CO2]. These results suggest that only under ambient [CO2] is GA required for the integration of carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism underlying optimal biomass determination. Predictive models are applicable for many practical tasks such as spam filtering, face and handwritten digit recognition, and personalized product recommendation. In general, they are used to predict a target label for a given data instance. In order to make an informed decision about the deployment of a predictive model, it is crucial to know the model’s approximate performance. To evaluate performance, a set of labeled test instances is required that is drawn from the distribution the model will be exposed to at application time. In many practical scenarios, unlabeled test instances are readily available, but the process of labeling them can be a time- and cost-intensive task and may involve a human expert. This thesis addresses the problem of evaluating a given predictive model accurately with minimal labeling effort. We study an active model evaluation process that selects certain instances of the data according to an instrumental sampling distribution and queries their labels. We derive sampling distributions that minimize estimation error with respect to different performance measures such as error rate, mean squared error, and F-measures. An analysis of the distribution that governs the estimator leads to confidence intervals, which indicate how precise the error estimation is. Labeling costs may vary across different instances depending on certain characteristics of the data. For instance, documents differ in their length, comprehensibility, and technical requirements; these attributes affect the time a human labeler needs to judge relevance or to assign topics. To address this, the sampling distribution is extended to incorporate instance-specific costs. We empirically study conditions under which the active evaluation processes are more accurate than a standard estimate that draws equally many instances from the test distribution. We also address the problem of comparing the risks of two predictive models. The standard approach would be to draw instances according to the test distribution, label the selected instances, and apply statistical tests to identify significant differences. Drawing instances according to an instrumental distribution affects the power of a statistical test. We derive a sampling procedure that maximizes test power when used to select instances, and thereby minimizes the likelihood of choosing the inferior model. Furthermore, we investigate the task of comparing several alternative models; the objective of an evaluation could be to rank the models according to the risk that they incur or to identify the model with lowest risk. An experimental study shows that the active procedure leads to higher test power than the standard test in many application domains. Finally, we study the problem of evaluating the performance of ranking functions, which are used for example for web search. In practice, ranking performance is estimated by applying a given ranking model to a representative set of test queries and manually assessing the relevance of all retrieved items for each query. We apply the concepts of active evaluation and active comparison to ranking functions and derive optimal sampling distributions for the commonly used performance measures Discounted Cumulative Gain and Expected Reciprocal Rank. Experiments on web search engine data illustrate significant reductions in labeling costs. Die Bestimmung der zugehörigen Zielattribute ist jedoch ein manueller Prozess, der kosten- und zeitaufwendig sein kann und mitunter spezielles Fachwissen erfordert. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die genaue Schätzung der Vorhersagequalität eines gegebenen Modells mit einer minimalen Anzahl von Testinstanzen. Wir untersuchen aktive Evaluierungsprozesse, die mit Hilfe einer Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilung Instanzen auswählen, für die das Zielattribut bestimmt wird. Die Vorhersagequalität kann anhand verschiedener Kriterien, wie der Fehlerrate, des mittleren quadratischen Verlusts oder des F-measures, bemessen werden. Wir leiten die Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilungen her, die den Schätzfehler bezüglich eines gegebenen Maßes minimieren. Der verbleibende Schätzfehler lässt sich anhand von Konfidenzintervallen quantifizieren, die sich aus der Verteilung des Schätzers ergeben. In vielen Anwendungen bestimmen individuelle Eigenschaften der Instanzen die Kosten, die für die Bestimmung des Zielattributs anfallen. So unterscheiden sich Dokumente beispielsweise in der Textlänge und dem technischen Anspruch. Wir leiten unter Beachtung dieser instanzspezifischen Unterschiede die optimale Verteilung her. Die entwickelten Evaluierungsmethoden werden auf verschiedenen Datensätzen untersucht. Wir analysieren in diesem Zusammenhang Bedingungen, unter denen die aktive Evaluierung genauere Schätzungen liefert als der Standardansatz, bei dem Instanzen zufällig aus der Testverteilung gezogen werden. Eine verwandte Problemstellung ist der Vergleich von zwei Modellen. Um festzustellen, welches Modell in der Praxis eine höhere Vorhersagequalität aufweist, wird eine Menge von Testinstanzen ausgewählt und das zugehörige Zielattribut bestimmt. Ein anschließender statistischer Test erlaubt Aussagen über die Signifikanz der beobachteten Unterschiede. Die Teststärke hängt von der Verteilung ab, nach der die Instanzen ausgewählt wurden. Wir bestimmen die Verteilung, die die Teststärke maximiert und damit die Wahrscheinlichkeit minimiert, sich für das schlechtere Modell zu entscheiden. Des Weiteren geben wir eine Möglichkeit an, den entwickelten Ansatz für den Vergleich von mehreren Modellen zu verwenden. Wir zeigen empirisch, dass die aktive Evaluierungsmethode im Vergleich zur zufälligen Auswahl von Testinstanzen in vielen Anwendungen eine höhere Teststärke aufweist. Here we characterized the sulfur-metabolizing microorganisms and activity in four TMVs in Azerbaijan. A combination of geochemical analyses, biological rate measurements and molecular diversity surveys (targeting metabolic genes aprA and dsrA and SSU ribosomal RNA) supported the presence of active sulfur-oxidizing and sulfate-reducing guilds in all four TMVs across a range of physiochemical conditions, with diversity of these guilds being unique to each TMV. The TMVs varied in potential sulfate reduction rates (SRR) by up to four orders of magnitude with highest SRR observed in sediments where in situ sulfate concentrations were highest. Maximum temperatures at which SRR were measured was 60 degrees C in two TMVs. Corresponding with these trends in SRR, members of the potentially thermophilic, spore-forming, Desulfotomaculum were detected in these TMVs by targeted 16S rRNA analysis. Additional sulfate-reducing bacterial lineages included members of the Desulfobacteraceae and Desulfobulbaceae detected by aprA and dsrA analyses and likely contributing to the mesophilic SRR measured. Phylotypes affiliated with sulfide-oxidizing Gamma- and Betaproteobacteria were abundant in aprA libraries from low sulfate TMVs, while the highest sulfate TMV harboured 16S rRNA phylotypes associated with sulfur-oxidizing Epsilonproteobacteria. Altogether, the biogeochemical and microbiological data indicate these unique terrestrial habitats support diverse active sulfur-cycling microorganisms reflecting the in situ geochemical environment. To tackle the second problem, many algorithms have been suggested that partition the data set and compare all record pairs only within each partition. One well-known such approach is the Sorted Neighborhood Method (SNM), which sorts the data according to some key and then advances a window over the data comparing only records that appear within the same window. We propose several variations of SNM that have in common a varying window size and advancement. The general intuition of such adaptive windows is that there might be regions of high similarity suggesting a larger window size and regions of lower similarity suggesting a smaller window size. We propose and thoroughly evaluate several adaption strategies, some of which are provably better than the original SNM in terms of efficiency (same results with fewer comparisons). In this model the ring matter consists of a bimodal size distribution: large (meter sized) boulders and a population of smaller particles (tens of centimeters down to dust). The small particles can adhesively stick to the boulders and can be released as debris in binary collisions of their carriers. The rates of release and adsorption of particles are calculated, depending on material parameters, sizes, and plausible velocity dispersions of carriers and debris particles. Shortly after the mainshock a dense network of temporary seismic stations was installed along the whole rupture zone in order to capture the aftershock activity. Here, we present the aftershock distribution and first motion polarity focal mechanisms based on automatic detection algorithms and picking engines. By processing the seismic data between 15 March and 30 September 2010 from stations from IRIS, IPGP, GFZ and University of Liverpool we determined 20,205 hypocentres with magnitudes M-w between 1 and 5.5. Seismic activity occurs in six groups: 1.) Normal faulting outer rise events 2.) A shallow group of plate interface seismicity apparent at 25-35 km depth and 50-120 km distance to the trench with some variations between profiles. Along strike, the aftershocks occur largely within the zone of coseismic slip but extend similar to 50 km further north, and with predominantly shallowly dipping thrust mechanisms. Along dip, the events are either within the zone of coseismic slip, or downdip from it, depending on the coseismic slip model used. 3.) A third band of seismicity is observed further downdip at 40-50 km depth and further inland at 150-160 km trench perpendicular distance, with mostly shallow dipping (similar to 28 degrees) thrust focal mechanisms indicating rupture of the plate interface significantly downdip of the coseismic rupture, and presumably above the intersection of the continental Moho with the plate interface. 4.) A deep group of intermediate depth events between 80 and 120 km depth is present north of 36 degrees S. Within the Maule segment, a large portion of events during the inter-seismic phase originated from this depth range. 5.) The magmatic arc exhibits a small amount of crustal seismicity but does not appear to show significantly enhanced activity after the M-w 8.8 Maule 2010 earthquake. 6.) Pronounced crustal aftershock activity with mainly normal faulting mechanisms is found in the region of Pichilemu (similar to 34.5 degrees S). These crustal events occur in a similar to 30 km wide region with sharp inclined boundaries and oriented oblique to the trench. The best-located events describe a plane dipping to the southwest, consistent with one of the focal planes of the large normal-faulting aftershock (M-w = 6.9) on 11 March 2010. While growth is naturally limited in tidal environments, frequent collisions among these objects may contribute to both accretion and fragmentation. As ring particles are primarily made of water ice attractive surface forces like adhesion could significantly influence these processes, finally determining the resulting size distribution. Here, we derive analytic expressions for the specific self-energy Q and related specific break-up energy Q(star) of aggregates. These expressions can be used for any aggregate type composed of monomeric constituents. We compare these expressions to numerical experiments where we create aggregates of various types including: regular packings like the face-centered cubic (fcc), Ballistic Particle Cluster Aggregates (BPCA), and modified BPCAs including e.g. different constituent size distributions. We show that accounting for attractive surface forces such as adhesion a simple approach is able to: (a) generally account for the size dependence of the specific break-up energy for fragmentation to occur reported in the literature, namely the division into "strength" and "gravity" regimes and (b) estimate the maximum aggregate size in a collisional ensemble to be on the order of a few tens of meters, consistent with the maximum particle size observed in Saturn's rings of about 10 m. September, erhielt ein großes Maß an medialer Aufmerksamkeit. Der Tod des Mannes, der für die Terroranschläge verantwortlich gemacht wurde, führte zu einer erneuten Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Ereignis und dessen individuellen und globalen Folgen. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung dieses Pressediskurses ist die Annahme, dass eine solche gedankliche und sprachliche Auseinandersetzung, wie sie in der Presse kreiert und reflektiert wird, insbesondere auch von Metaphern bestimmt wird. Die Untersuchung stützt sich auf die Erkenntnisse kognitiver Metapherntheorien. Sie orientiert sich aber vor allem auch an jüngeren Untersuchungen innerhalb der Metaphernforschung, die speziell die sprachliche Dimension der Metapher wieder mehr in den Vordergrund rücken. Der Arbeit liegt daher ein multidimensionales Verständnis der Metapher zugrunde. Die kognitive Funktion der Metapher ermöglicht das Begreifbarmachen abstrakter bzw. unbekannter Phänomene. Metaphern können aber zugleich auch Indikatoren für die bewusste wie auch unbewusste Bewertung von Ereignissen, Handlungen und Personen sein. Die Untersuchung verfolgt einen vergleichenden Ansatz, der auf der Grundlage eines Arbeitskorpus aus US-amerikanischen und französischen Pressetexten zur Tötung bin Ladens den Metapherngebrauch in den beiden Ländern anhand ausgewählter Themenaspekte gegenüberstellt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Landespressen zu identifizieren und diesbezüglich mögliche Interpretationen anzugeben. Dabei wird der Sprachgebrauch im Terror-Diskurs nach 9/11 einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen, um ein Bewusstsein für möglicherweise unbewusste metaphorische Konzeptualisierungen zu entwickeln. Im Vergleich des Metapherngebrauchs in der US-amerikanischen und französischen Presse werden deutliche Gemeinsamkeiten festgestellt. Die analysierten Unterschiede sind häufig sprachlich bedingt. Teilweise können sie aber auch im Hinblick auf Differenzen in der Positionierung der beiden Länder in Bezug auf bin Ladens Tötung interpretiert werden. Die weitgehende Übereinstimmung in den Metaphern lässt sich zum einen auf die Nähe der beiden Sprachen, zum anderen auf den ähnlichen politischen Hintergrund der beiden westlichen Länder zurückführen. N2 - The killing of Osama bin Laden by a US special task force in early May 2011, only a few months before the tenth anniversary of the devastating terror attacks of September 11, received a great deal of media attention. The death of the man who had been made responsible for the terror attacks triggered a fresh discussion of the events of 9/11 and both the individual and global consequences thereof. The starting point for an analysis of the relevant press discourse lies in the assumption that such a discussion taking place in language and thought, as it is created and reflected by the press, is to a great extent also determined by metaphors. The analysis draws on the insights of cognitive metaphor theories. It is, however, also primarily influenced by recent studies within metaphor research that aim to bring the linguistic dimension of metaphors back to the forefront. Therefore, a multidimensional understanding of metaphors forms the basis of the present study. The cognitive function of metaphors allows us to grasp abstract or unknown phenomena. Yet metaphors may further serve as indicators of conscious as well as unconscious evaluations of events, acts and people. The analysis follows a comparative approach: A study corpus of US and French press texts on the subject of bin Laden’s killing is analyzed with regard to selected aspects of the topic in order to compare the use of metaphors in the two countries. The aim of the study is to identify similarities and differences in the two countries’ press coverage and give possible interpretations for the results obtained. At the same time, the language used in the post-9/11 terror discourse is subjected to a critical examination in order to provide an understanding of metaphorical conceptualizations that are possibly unknown. In the comparison of metaphor use by the US and the French press clear similarities can be observed. The dissimilarities are often due to differences between the two languages. In some cases, however, they may be interpreted as the result of differences in the positions of the two countries on the subject of bin Laden’s killing. The extensive consistency in metaphor usage can be attributed to the closeness of the two languages as well as to the comparable political background of the two Western countries. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that the growing international exchange of news, especially via press agencies, may increasingly also lead to globalization in the field of metaphor. In an effort to fill such knowledge gaps, we present here an inventory of the alien flora of India, based on systematic reviews and rigorous analyses of research studies (ca. 190) published over the last 120 years (1890-2010 AD), and updated with field records of the last two decades. Currently, the inventory comprises of 1,599 species, belonging to 842 genera in 161 families, and constitutes 8.5% of the total Indian vascular flora. The three most species-rich families are Asteraceae (134 spp.), Papilionaceae (114 spp.) and Poaceae (106 spp.), and the three largest genera are Eucalyptus (25 spp.), Ipomoea (22 spp.), and Senna (21 spp.). The majority of these species (812) have no report of escaping from cultivation. Of the remaining subset of 787 species, which have either escaped from intentional cultivation, or spread after unintentional introduction, casuals are represented by 57 spp., casual/naturalised by 114 spp., naturalised by 257 spp., naturalised/invasive by 134 spp., and invasive by 225 spp. Biogeographically, more than one-third (35%) of the alien flora in India has its native ranges in South America, followed by Asia (21%), Africa (20%), Europe (11%), Australia (8%), North America (4%); and cryptogenic (1%). The inventory is expected to serve as the scientific baseline on plant invasions in India, with implications for conservation of global biodiversity. Pond restoration and construction is more and more accompanied by breeding and translocation programs. However, the appropriateness of translocations as a tool for conservation has been widely debated, as it can cause biodiversity loss through genetic homogenization and can disrupt local adaptation, eventually leading to outbreeding depression. In this study, we investigated the genetic structure of two translocated populations of the critically endangered fire-bellied toad Bombina bombina at its north western distribution edge using supposedly neutral genetic markers (variation in the mitochondrial control region and microsatellites) as well as a marker under selection (major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes). While one of the newly established populations showed the typical genetic composition of surrounding populations, the other was extremely diverged without clear affinity to its putative source. In this population we detected a profound impact of allochthonous individuals: 100% of the analyzed individuals exhibited a highly divergent mitochondrial haplotype which was otherwise found in Austria. 83% of them were also assigned to Austria by the analysis of microsatellites. Interestingly, for the adaptive marker (MHC) local alleles were predominant in this population, while only very few alleles were shared with the Austrian population. Probably Mendelian inheritance has reshuffled genotypes such that adaptive local alleles are maintained (here, MHC), while presumably neutral allochthonous alleles dominate at other loci. The release of allochthonous individuals generally increased the genetic variability of the affected population without wiping out locally adaptive genotypes. Thus, outbreeding depression might be less apparent than sometimes thought and natural selection appears strong enough to maintain locally adaptive alleles, at least in functionally important immune system genes. Es geht um die Frage, wie alltägliche Prozesse der Aneignung des Raumes durch die Wohnbevölkerung entlang der rumänisch-moldauischen Grenze funktionieren, und zwar unter den Bedingungen, die seit dem Beitritt Rumäniens zur EU am 1. Januar 2007 gegeben sind. Seitdem gelten für die Staatsbürger der Republik Moldau verschärfte Regeln für die Einreise in Rumänien. Denn die Grenze zwischen den beiden Staaten ist nun auch EU-Außengrenze. Bei der Beantwortung dieser Frage werden in der Arbeit die seit der Unabhängigkeit der Republik Moldau im Jahre 1991 und den Beitritten Rumäniens zur NATO und zur EU sich verändernden politischen Rahmenbedingungen im Zusammenhang mit ökonomischen Strukturen und Prozessen sowie nationalen und nationalistischen Ideologien und ihren Wirkungen in der Republik Moldau und in Rumänien berücksichtigt. Dabei wird besonders beachtet, dass 1. auf beiden Seiten der Grenze Rumänisch gesprochen wird sowie aus Sicht des Panrumänismus ein und dieselbe Nation lebt und dass 2. in der Republik Moldau seit den 1990er Jahren vor allem von Seiten der Politik ein moldauisches Nation-Building betrieben wird. Aus den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden Handlungsempfehlungen für Politik und Verwaltung abgeleitet, welche auf die Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen der Grenzraumbevölkerung abzielen.
