Intellektuellen-Rolle in Günter Grass Werken
The role of intellectuals in Günter Grass works
The present work carries the title:
The role of intellectuals in Günter Grass works:
„The plebeians rehearse the uprising“(1966), „locally dazes“(1969), „from the diary of a snail“(1972) and „a wide field“( 1995).
The first chapter deals all together with three full titles
II. The intellectual
II.1 The general sphere
In this part of the dissertation the statements which give an answer on the following and other questions should be met: what is an intellectual? How did the concept come about? Are there differences between the intellectuals and how are they divided?
II.2 The German Sphere
The treatment of the Nazi system and his historical backgrounds provides significant apprenticeships. For what does one need these apprenticeships? Are there tracks of national socialism nowadays? Where were the intellectuals during the forming of the national socialism? Has national socialism appeared only with Hitler? If before in which phase it has anchored itself in the consciousness of the Germans? Whether have theoretical or intellectually trends contributed it towards?
II.3 The picture of Grass as an intellectual
II.3.1 positioning
A main thesis for Grass intellectual positioning is determined by the connection between Grass’ basic concept of the society-political intellectuality and the group 47. Then the treatment of Grass picture after appearance of his autobiographical work: „with the skin of the onion“(2006) aims, that his intellectuality not only from the positive, but also from the negative profile is lighted up. From the representation of numerous views of Günter Grass are five thematic quintessential points treated as concepts. Under every concept should specific proposals be indicated to the social positioning.
II.3.2 Grass’ political signs
It concerns here around the intellectual traits. Some questions thereby get a chance to speak:
Does Günter Grass have social activities? Does he have the conditions for it? How is the extent of his activities? Does the group 47 have influence on Grass’ intellectual signs? Is a method of the society-political work available with Grass?
Then the political language is examined by Günter Grass and its effect on the recipient. Then Grass’ view of Revision is asked and whether it fits with his view of the clarification. The function of the Revision is consequently offered in his literary work and in his society-political activity. Finally, the arguments of his intellectuality are examined. How has Grass’ society-political activity considered the concrete political frame? To answer this question, the connection must be made clear between politic and morality. III. Historical context and contents of the works
Under this title the historical connection of the examined works is outlined first. Then are mostly shown with arguments from every work not only the core of the work and its action course, but also the method applied for it.
IV. Relation of the examined works to concrete society-political questions
IV.1 Interaction ways of the intellectual with the society, above all with the change of
Society-political processes
Central concepts of the first work are: Mediation, engagement, solidarity and the actuality as a graduation. These become by two concepts of the second work: Appeal at generations in case of change and cohesion principle engaged in the revision, as well as by the treatment of the education of opinion in the fourth work worked out.
IV.2 Thematic aspects for the avoidance of a Nazi regime
From the subject of the three last works goes a coloured collection of intellectual concepts out, which can be used to the fight against Nazi projections.
V. Educational strategies of the examined works
The educational strategies of the examined works should provide intellectual values, which make an important contribution to solve society-political problems and conflicts.
VI. Development of the literary and society-political vision
Here the line of development of the society-political vision is pursed in the examined works.
VII. To the reception of the four works
The discussion with the negative criticism aims to clear the subjectivity, so that the society-political value of the four works is revealed.
„Die Plebejer proben den Aufstand“(1966), „Örtlich betäubt“(1969), „Aus dem Tagebuch einer Schnecke“(1972), und „Ein weites Feld“(1995)
„The plebeians rehearse the uprising“(1966), „locally dazes“ 1969), „from the diary of a snail“(1972) and „a wide field“( 1995)

They don’t look like children
In October 2016, following a campaign led by Labour Peer Lord Alfred Dubs, the first child asylum-seekers allowed entry to the UK under new legislation (the ‘Dubs amendment’) arrived in England. Their arrival was captured by a heavy media presence, and very quickly doubts were raised by right-wing tabloids and politicians about their age. In this article, I explore the arguments underpinning the Dubs campaign and the media coverage of the children’s arrival as a starting point for interrogating representational practices around children who seek asylum. I illustrate how the campaign was premised on a universal politics of childhood that inadvertently laid down the terms on which these children would be given protection, namely their innocence.
The universality of childhood fuels public sympathy for child asylum-seekers, underlies the ‘child first, migrant second’ approach advocated by humanitarian organisations, and it was a key argument in the ‘Dubs amendment’. Yet the campaign highlights how representations of child asylum-seekers rely on codes that operate to identify ‘unchildlike’ children. As I show, in the context of the criminalisation of undocumented migrants‘, childhood is no longer a stable category which guarantees protection, but is subject to scrutiny and suspicion and can, ultimately, be disproved.

Architektur und Kunst im lyrischen Werk Johannes Bobrowskis
Architecture and art in the lyric poetry of Johannes Bobrowski
Bobrowski had expressed the intention to study art history after graduation, but war and captivity thwarted his plans: As a member of the German Armed Forces, he was only released from military service for a semester in winter 1941/1942. Bobrowski was particularly impressed by the lectures on German Art in the Age of Goethe by the departmental chair Wilhelm Pinder. However, despite this fundamental influence Pinder’s ideological background never become manifest in Bobrowski’s poems.
After returning from Soviet captivity during Christmas 1949, university studies were out of the question for the thirty-two-year-old. However, his lifelong intermedial engagement with fine art in his work can be interpreted as an expression of his diverse cultural and historical interests and inclinations. The poet’s life phases correlate with the thematic development of his poems on visual art: The inviolable aesthetics of significant works of art helped him to overcome the horror of the last years of the war and the privations of Soviet captivity. Didactic moral aims initially shaped the poems Bobrowski created in the years after his return home before he was able to distance himself in terms of content and form from this type of poetry and began to write poems that take up cultural-historical aspects and juxtapose historical, mythological, biblical and religious-philosophical themes spanning epochs. His poems about the artists Jawlensky and Calder also touch simultaneously on aspects of the cultural landscape. In the last decade of his life, Bobrowski became increasingly interested in twentieth-century art, while modern architecture was absent from his work.
Bobrowski devoted himself in an entire series of poems to Classicist and Romanticist painting and thus to works that were written during the Age of Goethe and about which Wilhelm Pinder may have given lectures during his “German Art in the Age of Goethe” course attended by Bobrowski.
Architecture is a leitmotif in Bobrowski’s lyrical works. The significance conveyed of the particular sacred and profane buildings referred to in the poems as well as the urban and village ensembles and individual parts of buildings changes several times over the years. Starting from traditional, juxtaposed juvenile poems in iambic versification, in which architectural elements form part of an awareness that fades out everything outside of the aesthetic, the significance of the sacred and secular buildings in Bobrowski’s lyrical works changes for the first time during the years he spent in Russia during the war as part of the German military. In the odes Bobrowski wrote at the time, the architectural relics testify to suffering, death and destruction. What is still absent, however, is the central idea of guilt, which later becomes the focus of poems he writes after his return from captivity until his early death.
Towards the end of the war and during his years of captivity, Bobrowski reflects on the theme of his homeland again, and the architecture in his poems becomes an aesthetically charged projection for his yearning for East Prussia and the Memel area. The aspect of the sublime first appears in his poems, both in relation to painting and architecture, during his captivity. This idea is developed on the one hand after his return to Berlin in his poems on the architecture of Gothic cathedrals and the architectural heritage of Classicism, but the cultural heritage of Europe also represents historical injustice and a heavy, far-reaching guilt in the poems written during this period.
Bobrowski turns away from his criticism of the entire continent of Europe in later years and in his “Sarmatic Divan” concentrates on the guilt Germans have towards the peoples of Eastern Europe. This also lends the architecture in his poems a new meaning. The relics of the castles of the Teutonic Order testify to the rule of medieval conquerors and merge with nature: The symbolism of the architecture becomes part of the landscape. In the last decade of his life, he increasingly writes poems related to parks and urban green spaces. The city, “filled with meaning”, moves to the centre of his poetry. However he does not deal with the technical achievements and social phenomena of urban life in these poems but with urban structures and especially the green and open spaces as symbols of history.
The poet relies not only on personal experiences, but sometimes also on image sources without ever having seen the original. The poems about Chagall and Gauguin are hardly accessible without the knowledge that they refer to image reproductions in narrow, popular books that Bobrowski acquired shortly before writing the respective poems. The situation is different with the Russian churches that find their way into his lyrical works. Bobrowski had seen them all during the war, and most of them still appear to exist today and can be identified with some certainty with the help in part of the poet's letters from that period.

The Status of Syntactic Variations in Linguistic Contact Situations
The article presents first results of a pilot study on the syntactic changes in Polish as a language contact in Germany. On the base of the experimental data tests the study examines the syntactic changes in Polish of two diaspora-generations: the so called forgetters and the incomplete learners. The article focuses on the questions: how the situation of languages in contact influences the syntactic changes in the heritage language (Polish) and which status have those syntactic transferences. Other linguistic and sociolinguistic factors, capable to cause the language change in the situation of language contact, are also discussed in the article.

Sam Selvon, The Lonely Londoners (1956)
This essay reads Sam Selvon’s novel The Lonely Londoners (1956) as a milestone in the decolonisation of British fiction. After an introduction to Selvon and the core composition of the novel, it discusses the ways in which the narrative takes on issues of race and racism, how it in the tradition of the Trinidadian carnival confronts audiences with sexual profanation and black masculine swagger, and not least how the novel, especially through its elaborate use of creole Englishes, reimagines London as a West Indian metropolis. The essay then turns more systematically to the ways in which Selvon translates Western literary models and their isolated subject positions into collective modes of narrative performance taken from Caribbean orature and the calypsonian tradition. The Lonely Londoners breathes entirely new life into the ossified conventions of the English novel, and imbues it with unforeseen aesthetic, ethical, political and epistemological possibilities.

Postcolonial Justice: An Introduction
Postcolonial Justice' addresses a major issue in current postcolonial theory and beyond, namely, the question of how to reconcile an ethics grounded in the reciprocal acknowledgment of diversity and difference with the normative, if not universal thrust that appears to energize any notion of justice. The concept of postcolonial justice shared by the essays in this volume carries an unwavering commitment to difference within and beyond Europe, while equally rejecting radical cultural essentialisms, which refuse to engage in "utopian ideals" of convivial exchange across a plurality of subject positions. Such utopian ideals can no longer claim universal validity, as in the tradition of the European enlightenment; instead they are bound to local frames of speaking from which they project world.
