  abstract  = {The difficult publication history and expensive editions of Alexander von Humboldt's volumes on the expedition to the Americas have resulted in incomplete library holdings which has limited scholarly access and sometimes caused unbalanced scholarship. A plan for a Humboldt Digital Library examines the structures and features of this representational system in print and proposes models for converting these materials to electronic form. Several issues posed by Humboldt's works include: establishing authoritative standard editions in several languages, creating high-resolution access to the many visual innovations in the works, and using software to restore the grand concept that all of the separate disciplines of study can be seen as interrelated parts of the whole. Using techniques of geographic visualization, a prototype is planned which will connect this historical body of knowledge with modern scientific databases.},

  abstract  = {Kurz vor seiner Abreise nach S{\"u}damerika erwarb HUMBOLDT zur Erg{\"a}nzung seiner Instrumentenausr{\"u}stung ein ganz besonderes Pr{\"a}zisions-Taschenchronometer, gefertigt von dem ber{\"u}hmten Schweizer Uhrmacher Louis BERTHOUD (1753-1813) mit der Fertigungsnummer 27. Dieser Zeitmesser ging, wie HUMBOLDT durch astronomische Vergleichsmessungen in Frankreich und Spanien auf der Anreise zum Einschiffungshafen La Corunna 1799 feststellte, außerordentlich genau. HUMBOLDTs L{\"a}ngenbestimmungen mit Hilfe dieses "time-keepers" auf der Atlantik-{\"U}berfahrt und sonstigen Seefahrten waren deshalb immer besser als die der Nautiker. Er konnte dadurch exakte Beschreibungen der Meeresstr{\"o}mungen machen und durch Vergleich mit der Schiffsversetzung durch diese konkrete Angaben zu deren Richtung und St{\"a}rke berechnen. Zudem brauchte er die BERTHOUD-Uhr f{\"u}r zahlreiche astronomische Ortsbestimmungen, geod{\"a}tische Messungen auf Land. Die Uhr geh{\"o}rte vorher dem bekannten franz{\"o}sischen Seefahrer, Mathematiker und Geod{\"a}ten Jean Louis BORDA (1733-1799), mit dem HUMBOLDT 1798 kurz vor dessen Tod in Paris wissenschaftlichen und instrumentenkundlichen Austausch pflegte. Aus zahlreichen Abschnitten der Reisebeschreibung und Hinweisen in Briefen und anderen Werken geht hervor, daß HUMBOLDT gerade an diesem Zeitmesser, neben Thermometer und Barometer sein drittes Basisinstrument, wegen der Vorgeschichte der Uhr, ihrer Zuverl{\"a}ssigkeit und N{\"u}tzlichkeit f{\"u}r alle seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten geradezu liebevoll gehangen hat. Leider ist dieser Chronometer nicht mehr vorhanden, sein Aussehen und ihre Funktionsweise l{\"a}ßt sich aber aus HUMBOLDTs eigenen Beschreibungen und der horologischen Literatur erschließen.},

  abstract  = {Este trabajo trata un aspecto de la obra de Humboldt que es muy importante y, a la vez, poco conocido: la inspiraci{\´o}n de este sabio prusiano en los antiguos cronistas espa{\~n}oles al desarrollar sus propias y originales ideas sobre el Universo. El objetivo de este estudio es demostrar que Humboldt no solo era un lector de estas cr{\´o}nicas, sino que su sistema de observaci{\´o}n y clasificaci{\´o}n, llamado Historia Natural y Moral, con el que se pretend{\´i}a aprehender las tierras americanas en su plenitud y diversidad, est{\´a} presente como idea en la elaboraci{\´o}n de Humboldt de su concepto de la Geograf{\´i}a F{\´i}sica. Los argumentos para sostener esta hip{\´o}tesis ser{\´a}n presentadas en dos niveles. Una primera parte, de car{\´a}cter descriptivo, nos muestra los resultados de una b{\´u}squeda sistem{\´a}tica de referencias que se encuentran en las obras de Humboldt a los escritos de los cronistas en general, y a Acosta en particular. La segunda parte es m{\´a}s interpretativa, y tiene su focus en un an{\´a}lisis de las semejanzas que se encuentran entre el concepto que aplica Humboldt en sus estudios y el modelo Historia Natural y Moral, con objeto de desarrollar c{\´o}mo Humboldt redescubre, usa y revaloriza este esquema.},

In most cases he did this tongue in cheek, rarely hurting people seriously. A special target of Humboldt's ironical remarks was the Prussian ministry of education and culture because of its animosity to the natural sciences which Humboldt wanted to promote. Often Humboldt expressed his frustration about narrow-mindedness and arrogance which he observed in his hometown of Berlin. Sometimes he had reasons to criticize the Prussian Academies of Sciences and of Arts. Humboldt had a fine sense of humor and many critical remarks can only be understood in the context in which they were made. Die Auswahlausgabe der amerikanischen Reisetageb{\"u}cher Humboldts begann 1982 mit der Publikation der gesellschaftskritischen {\"A}ußerungen zum spanischen Kolonialsystem, zwei weitere B{\"a}nde (Texte und Kommentar) sollten den unvollst{\"a}ndig gebliebenen, auf Venezuela beschr{\"a}nkten gedruckten Reisebericht, "Relation historique", erg{\"a}nzen. In dem hier vorgestellten Band sind die Texte publiziert, die dem gedruckten Reisebericht entsprechen. Der Vergleich zwischen Tageb{\"u}chern und Druck zeigt eine strukturelle Identit{\"a}t. Die Ereignisschilderung bezieht die wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten mit ein und stellt sie nicht selten in den Mittelpunkt. Inhaltlich ergibt sich ein Unterschied in der Substanz. Pers{\"o}nliche Erlebnisse, politisches Urteil und wissenschaftliche Ausf{\"u}hrungen sind nicht immer identisch. Der Text des Bandes wurde in 12 Kapitel unterteilt. Den lokalen Rahmen bilden die Abreise aus Paris 1798 und die Ankunft auf Kuba 1800. Die Ausf{\"u}hrungen dienen der geographischen Erschließung des Landes, wobei das ethnologische Moment eine große Rolle spielt. Die angeh{\"a}ngten Kommentare unterst{\"u}tzen das Verst{\"a}ndnis der Texte, vier Register dienen ihrer leichteren Erschließung.},

Im Angesicht ihrer kolonialen Sklavereiwirtschaft ger{\"a}t die optimistische Geschichtsphilosophie der europ{\"a}ischen Aufkl{\"a}rung in eine Krise, und die Widerspr{\"u}che des Humboldtschen Diskurses treten zutage. Dieses Ph{\"a}nomen l{\"a}ßt sich insbesondere literaturwissenschaftlich analysieren: Alexander von Humboldt entwirft Cuba als einen poetischen Raum, in dem alles mehrdeutig wird.   abstract  = {In the middle of the 19th century the question whether expanding civilization and industrialization had an effect on climate was discussed intensely worldwide. It was feared that increasing deforestation would lead to continuous decrease in rainfall. This first scientific discussion about climate change as the result of human intervention was strongly influenced by the research Alexander von Humboldt and Jean-Baptiste Boussingault had undertaken when they investigated the falling water levels of Lake Valencia in Venezuela. This essay aims to clarify the question whether Alexander von Humboldt can be counted among the leading figures of modern environmentalism on account of this research as is being claimed by Richard H. Grove in his influential book Green Imperialism. Colonial Expansion, Tropical Island Edens and Origins of Environmentalism, 1600-1860 (1995).},

  abstract  = {Noise-induced dynamics of a prototypical bistable system with delayed feedback is studied theoretically and numerically. For small noise and magnitude of the feedback, the problem is reduced to the analysis of the two-state model with transition rates depending on the earlier state of the system. Analytical solutions for the autocorrelation function and the power spectrum have been found. The power spectrum has a peak at the frequency corresponding to the inverse delay time, whose amplitude has a maximum at a certain noise level, thus demonstrating coherence resonance. The linear response to the external periodic force also has maxima at the frequencies corresponding to the inverse delay time and its harmonics.},

The LEs are demonstrated to exhibit avoided crossing and level repulsion, qualitatively similar to the behavior of energy levels in quantum chaos. Recent results for the coupling dependence of the LEs of two coupled chaotic systems are used to explain the phenomenon and to derive an approximate expression for the distribution functions of LE spacings. The depletion of the level spacing distribution is shown to be exponentially strong at small values. The results are interpreted in terms of the random matrix theory.},

  abstract  = {The transition from fully synchronized behavior to two-cluster dynamics is investigated for a system of N globally coupled chaotic oscillators by means of a model of two coupled logistic maps. An uneven distribution of oscillators between the two clusters causes an asymmetry to arise in the coupling of the model system. While the transverse period-doubling bifurcation remains essentially unaffected by this asymmetry, the transverse pitchfork bifurcation is turned into a saddle-node bifurcation followed by a transcritical riddling bifurcation in which a periodic orbit embedded in the synchronized chaotic state loses its transverse stability. We show that the transcritical riddling transition is always hard. For this, we study the sequence of bifurcations that the asynchronous point cycles produced in the saddle-node bifurcation undergo, and show how the manifolds of these cycles control the magnitude of asynchronous bursts. In the case where the system involves two subpopulations of oscillators with a small mismatch of the parameters, the transcritical riddling will be replaced by two subsequent saddle-node bifurcations, or the saddle cycle involved in the transverse destabilization of the synchronized chaotic state may smoothly shift away from the synchronization manifold. In this way, the transcritical riddling bifurcation is substituted by a symmetry-breaking bifurcation, which is accompanied by the destruction of a thin invariant region around the symmetrical chaotic state.},

Diese Ph{\"a}nomene werden u.a. in gekoppelten deterministischen chaotischen Systemen beobachtet. Bei sehr schwachen Interaktionen zwischen individuellen Systemen kann ein {\"U}bergang zum schwach koh{\"a}renten Verhalten der Systeme stattfinden. In gekoppelten zeitkontinuierlichen chaotischen Systemen manifestiert sich dieser {\"U}bergang durch den Effekt der Phasensynchronisierung, in gekoppelten chaotischen zeitdiskreten Systemen durch den Effekt eines nichtverschwindenden makroskopischen Feldes. Der {\"U}bergang zur Koh{\"a}renz in einer Kette lokal gekoppelter Oszillatoren, beschrieben durch Phasengleichungen, wird im Bezug auf die Symmetrien des Systems untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, daß die durch die Symmetrien verursachte Reversibilit{\"a}t des Systems nichttriviale topologische Eigenschaften der Trajektorien bedingt, so daß das als dissipativ konstruierte System in einem ganzen Parameterbereich quasi-Hamiltonische Z{\"u}ge aufweist, d.h. das Phasenvolumen ist im Schnitt erhalten, und die Lyapunov-Exponenten sind paarweise symmetrisch. Der {\"U}bergang zur Koh{\"a}renz in einem Ensemble global gekoppelter chaotischer Abbildungen wird durch den Verlust der Stabilit{\"a}t des entkoppelten Zustandes beschrieben. Die entwickelte Methode besteht darin, die Selbstkonsistenz des makroskopischen Feldes aufzuheben, und das Ensemble in Analogie mit einem Verst{\"a}rkerschaltkreis mit R{\"u}ckkopplung durch eine komplexe lineare {\"U}bertragungssfunktion zu charakterisieren. Diese Theorie wird anschließend f{\"u}r einige theoretisch interessanten F{\"a}lle verallgemeinert.},

Ergebnisse werden erzielt durch das Ersetzen der chaotischen Fluktuationen in der St{\"o}rungsdynamik durch stochastische Prozesse. Zun{\"a}chst wird ein zeitkontinuierliches stochastisches Modell f{\"u}rschwach gekoppelte chaotische Systeme eingef{\"u}hrt, um die Skalierung der Lyapunov-Exponenten mit der Kopplungsst{\"a}rke (coupling sensitivity of chaos) zu untersuchen. Mit Hilfe der Fokker-Planck-Gleichung werden Skalengesetze hergeleitet, die von Ergebnissen numerischer Simulationen best{\"a}tigt werden. Anschließend wird der neuartige Effekt der vermiedenen Kreuzung von Lyapunov-Exponenten schwach gekoppelter ungeordneter chaotischer Systeme beschrieben, der qualitativ der Abstoßung zwischen Energieniveaus in Quantensystemen {\"a}hnelt. Unter Benutzung der f{\"u}r die coupling sensitivity of chaos gewonnenen Skalengesetze wird ein asymptotischer Ausdruck f{\"u}r die Verteilungsfunktion kleiner Abst{\"a}nde zwischen Lyapunov-Exponenten hergeleitet und mit Ergebnissen numerischer Simulationen verglichen. Schließlich wird gezeigt, dass der Synchronisations{\"u}bergang in starkgekoppelten r{\"a}umlich ausgedehnten chaotischen Systemen einem kontinuierlichen Phasen{\"u}bergang entspricht, mit der Kopplungsst{\"a}rke und dem Synchronisationsfehler als Kontroll- beziehungsweise Ordnungsparameter. Unter Benutzung von Ergebnissen numerischer Simulationen sowie theoretischen {\"U}berlegungen anhand einer partiellen Differentialgleichung mit multiplikativem Rauschen werden die Universalit{\"a}tsklassen der zwei beobachteten {\"U}bergangsarten bestimmt (Kardar-Parisi-Zhang-Gleichung mit S{\"a}ttigungsterm, gerichtete Perkolation).},

Broad band (U-B, B-V) and intermediate band (Str{\"o}mgren c_1) colours can be derived directly from HES spectra, with precisions of sigma U-B=0.092 mag; sigma B-V=0.095 mag; sigma c_1=0.15 mag. We describe simulation techniques that allow one to convert model or slit spectra to HES spectra. These simulated objective-prism spectra are used to determine quantitative selection criteria, and for the study of selection functions. We present an atlas of simulated HES spectra of DA and DB white dwarfs. Our current selection algorithm is tuned to yield maximum efficiency of the candidate sample (minimum contamination with non-DAs). DA candidates are selected in the B-V versus U-B and c_1 versus W_lambda (Hbeta +Hgamma +Hdelta ) parameter spaces. The contamination of the resulting sample with hot subdwarfs is expected to be as low as ~ 8\%, while there is essentially no contamination with main sequence or horizontal branch stars. We estimate that with the present set of criteria, ~ 80\% of DAs present in the HES database are recovered. A yet higher degree of internal completeness could be reached at the expense of higher contamination. However, the external completeness is limited by additional losses caused by proper motion effects and the epoch differences between direct and spectral plates used in the HES. To generate an immortalized cytotoxic T cell clone against the human tumor antigen mucin, we exposed a previously generated T cell culture to Herpesvirus saimiri. We obtained an immortalized human CD4+ T cell clone, termed SITAM. Clonality of these cells was shown by analysis of the alpha/beta-T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire. Cytolytic activity was demonstrated against several mucin-expressing tumor cell lines and could not be detected against non-mucin-expressing cells. SITAM cells maintained their features stably for 2 years. Furthermore, growth of the tumor cell line Capan-2 in NOD/SCID mice was inhibited when SITAM cells were coinjected subcutaneously with tumor cells. SITAM cells provide an unlimited source of clonal T cells for analysis of tumor recognition and may be of help in TCR-targeted immunotherapy.},

Mucin, encoded by the gene MUC1, is a human tumor antigen expressed in breast, pancreatic and ovarian cancers. Therefore, MUC1-transfected DC would be an attractive tool in constructing cancer vaccines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using two different cationic liposome preparations and, for comparison, a recombinant adenovirus expressing mucin, we tested the efficiency of mucin gene transfer into DC by flow cytometry. We investigated if these transfected DC were able to specifically stimulate autologous peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from healthy donors. RESULTS: Flow cytometry revealed that 5-20\% of DC transfected with liposomes Lipofectin and 20-40\% of DC transduced with adenovirus expressed the relevant mucin epitopes. The expression of mucin on DC was similar to the expression of mucin found on carcinoma cells. After antigen uptake, DC specifically stimulated autologous PBL. CONCLUSION: We have shown that cationic liposomal gene transfer into human DC was feasible. We could obtain antigen specific stimulation of PBL at a similar rate as with adenoviral MUC1-transduced DC.},

  abstract  = {Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells of the immune system and are currently being investigated in clinical applications as cancer vaccines. An efficient cryopreservation method would greatly contribute to their use in clinical trials. We have established a method for freezing of DCs derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells using the plasma expander Gelifundol. This enabled us to reduce the concentration of the toxic DMSO to 5\%. The method could be performed without the addition of fetal calf serum or any other serum. After freezing, the viability of the DCs was 90\%. The cells exhibited all the phenotypic characteristics (CD11c+, HLA-DR+, CD80+, CD83+, CD86+) of DCs, as tested by flow cytometry. Cells transfected with cDNA for the tumour antigen mucin expressed this protein on their surfaces in the same manner as before freezing. The stimulating capacity of a mixed lymphocyte culture was also preserved. These findings offer an efficient method for the cryopreservation of DCs for use in clinical trials.},

Currently most data is still stored in text files which leads to data redundancies and file chaos. In this paper we show how to use relational modeling techniques and relational database technology for modeling and storing biological sequence data, i.e. for data maintained in collections like EMBL or SWISS-PROT to better serve the needs for these application domains. For this reason we propose a two step approach. First, we model the structure (and therefore the meaning of the) data using an Entity-Relationship approach. The ER model leads to a clean design of a relational database schema for storing and retrieving the DNA and protein data extracted from various sources. Our approach provides the clean basis for building complex biological applications that are more amenable to changes and software ports than their file-base counterparts.},

  abstract  = {Die ersten beiden Konferenzen des Forschungskreises Vereinte Nationen im Dezember 1999 und im Juni 2000 in der Universit{\"a}t Potsdam standen im Zeichen des interdisziplin{\"a}ren Dialogs in der UN-Forschung zwischen V{\"o}lkerrechts- und Politikwissenschaft und dienten zugleich der Standortbestimmung der deutschen UN-Forschung im internationalen Kontext. Die dritte Konferenz des Forschungskreises, die am 29. und 30. Juni 2001 wiederum in den R{\"a}umen der Juristischen Fakult{\"a}t der Universit{\"a}t Potsdam stattfand, widmete sich der Bilanz der Arbeit der Vereinten Nationen ein Jahr nach dem Milleniumsgipfel 2000 in New York in ihren Hauptaufgabengebieten sowie der deutschen UN-Politik in diesem Kontext. Die in dieser Brosch{\"u}re ver{\"o}ffentlichten Referate der dritten Konferenz spiegeln zusammen mit den Diskussionen, die zusammenfassend dargestellt werden, die weitreichenden strukturellen Probleme, denen sich die Vereinten Nationen durch die Prozesse der Globalisierung in der Friedenssicherung, beim Schutz der Menschenrechte und in der multilateralen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit ausgesetzt sehen. Sie stellen eine erste Evaluation der Reformmaßnahmen dar, die seit dem Milleniumsgipfel beschlossen wurden. Zugleich verdeutlichen sie die enge Wechselbeziehung zwischen der Arbeit der Weltorganisation und der nationalen Außenpolitik ihrer Mitgliedsl{\"a}nder, wie sie sich am Beispiel der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zeigt.},

  abstract  = {The rescaling of geological data series to a geological reference time series is of major interest in many investigations. For example, geophysical borehole data should be correlated to a given data series whose time scale is known in order to achieve an age-depth function or the sedimentation rate for the borehole data. Usually this synchronization is performed visually and by hand. Instead of using this wiggle matching by eye, we present the application of cross recurrence plots for such tasks. Using this method, the synchronization and rescaling of geological data to a given time scale is much easier and faster than by hand.},

  abstract  = {We use the extension of the method of recurrence plots to cross recurrence plots (CRP) which enables a nonlinear analysis of bivariate data. To quantify CRPs, we develop further three measures of complexity mainly basing on diagonal structures in CRPs. The CRP analysis of prototypical model systems with nonlinear interactions demonstrates that this technique enables to find these nonlinear interrelations from bivariate time series, whereas linear correlation tests do not. Applying the CRP analysis to climatological data, we find a complex relationship between rainfall and El Nino data.},
