  abstract  = {Towards Global Consciousness. Alexander von Humboldt's Conception of Science and the emerging ethical Weltanschauung. In the context of recent reflections upon global ethics (Hans K{\"u}ng), global democracy (Otfried H{\"o}ffe) and a new cultural situation after the end of the Cold War (Clifford Geertz), Alexander von Humboldt's concept of global consciousness (Weltbewußtsein) marks a decisive point in the ungoing process of the construction of a new ethics of globalization. This article tries to show how Humboldt's transdisciplinary and intercultural conception of sience as WorldWideWeb integrates Kant's philosophical visions of global political institutions and formulates a critique of the non-empirical foundations of Hegel's teleological Weltanschauung. From his Visions of Nature and his Personal Narrative to his Cosmos, Humboldt's theory and practice of science help us to find a new ethos and new answers to the contemporary questions of divergent modernities.},

  abstract  = {Humboldt wrote about Mexico from the perspective of a scientific explorer and naturalist. His works include his diaries, the Essai politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle-Espagne, the Tablas g{\´e}ograficas, the Vues des Cordill{\`e}res and a geographic atlas. Concerning the scientific aspect, the lack of a section on Mexico in the Relation historique is not a real deficit, since this can be found in the Essai. But only the diaries and letters from the journey, both published by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Centre, Berlin, can be considered an adequate substitute. The following will show the origin of Humboldt's writings on Mexico, offer historical and bibliographical facts and present the publications "Beitr{\"a}ge zur Alexander von Humboldt-Forschung", as well as Humboldt's handwritten estate as far as they are available to us.},

The paper first deals with Humboldt's scientific activities before his election and then goes into detail as far as his integration into the work of the Academy is concerned. Humboldt was elected as a chimiste c{\´e}l{\`e}bre, but as a member of the Academy he did not work as a chemist. When Humboldt proposed in 1837 to classify the members of each class in special fields, he chose for himself the field of "mineralogy-geology".},

  abstract  = {The present paper investigates the conceptual development of Alexander on Humboldt. The point of reference is his relation to Schelling and to a series of investigators of nature and of physicians closely connected to Naturphilosophie. It is shown that in the correspondence of Humboldt with this group the content underwent a transformation. Scientific exchanges and a general interpretative consensus were over the years more and more replaced by social cooperation over academic appointments, and collaboration over other political problems within the scientific establishment. Humboldt fit Schelling and other partners with whom he cooperated into a network of relationships that rested on mutual social support.},

  abstract  = {The difficult publication history and expensive editions of Alexander von Humboldt's volumes on the expedition to the Americas have resulted in incomplete library holdings which has limited scholarly access and sometimes caused unbalanced scholarship. A plan for a Humboldt Digital Library examines the structures and features of this representational system in print and proposes models for converting these materials to electronic form. Several issues posed by Humboldt's works include: establishing authoritative standard editions in several languages, creating high-resolution access to the many visual innovations in the works, and using software to restore the grand concept that all of the separate disciplines of study can be seen as interrelated parts of the whole. Using techniques of geographic visualization, a prototype is planned which will connect this historical body of knowledge with modern scientific databases.},

  abstract  = {Kurz vor seiner Abreise nach S{\"u}damerika erwarb HUMBOLDT zur Erg{\"a}nzung seiner Instrumentenausr{\"u}stung ein ganz besonderes Pr{\"a}zisions-Taschenchronometer, gefertigt von dem ber{\"u}hmten Schweizer Uhrmacher Louis BERTHOUD (1753-1813) mit der Fertigungsnummer 27. Dieser Zeitmesser ging, wie HUMBOLDT durch astronomische Vergleichsmessungen in Frankreich und Spanien auf der Anreise zum Einschiffungshafen La Corunna 1799 feststellte, außerordentlich genau. HUMBOLDTs L{\"a}ngenbestimmungen mit Hilfe dieses "time-keepers" auf der Atlantik-{\"U}berfahrt und sonstigen Seefahrten waren deshalb immer besser als die der Nautiker. Er konnte dadurch exakte Beschreibungen der Meeresstr{\"o}mungen machen und durch Vergleich mit der Schiffsversetzung durch diese konkrete Angaben zu deren Richtung und St{\"a}rke berechnen. Zudem brauchte er die BERTHOUD-Uhr f{\"u}r zahlreiche astronomische Ortsbestimmungen, geod{\"a}tische Messungen auf Land. Die Uhr geh{\"o}rte vorher dem bekannten franz{\"o}sischen Seefahrer, Mathematiker und Geod{\"a}ten Jean Louis BORDA (1733-1799), mit dem HUMBOLDT 1798 kurz vor dessen Tod in Paris wissenschaftlichen und instrumentenkundlichen Austausch pflegte. Aus zahlreichen Abschnitten der Reisebeschreibung und Hinweisen in Briefen und anderen Werken geht hervor, daß HUMBOLDT gerade an diesem Zeitmesser, neben Thermometer und Barometer sein drittes Basisinstrument, wegen der Vorgeschichte der Uhr, ihrer Zuverl{\"a}ssigkeit und N{\"u}tzlichkeit f{\"u}r alle seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten geradezu liebevoll gehangen hat. Leider ist dieser Chronometer nicht mehr vorhanden, sein Aussehen und ihre Funktionsweise l{\"a}ßt sich aber aus HUMBOLDTs eigenen Beschreibungen und der horologischen Literatur erschließen.},

  abstract  = {Este trabajo trata un aspecto de la obra de Humboldt que es muy importante y, a la vez, poco conocido: la inspiraci{\´o}n de este sabio prusiano en los antiguos cronistas espa{\~n}oles al desarrollar sus propias y originales ideas sobre el Universo. El objetivo de este estudio es demostrar que Humboldt no solo era un lector de estas cr{\´o}nicas, sino que su sistema de observaci{\´o}n y clasificaci{\´o}n, llamado Historia Natural y Moral, con el que se pretend{\´i}a aprehender las tierras americanas en su plenitud y diversidad, est{\´a} presente como idea en la elaboraci{\´o}n de Humboldt de su concepto de la Geograf{\´i}a F{\´i}sica. Los argumentos para sostener esta hip{\´o}tesis ser{\´a}n presentadas en dos niveles. Una primera parte, de car{\´a}cter descriptivo, nos muestra los resultados de una b{\´u}squeda sistem{\´a}tica de referencias que se encuentran en las obras de Humboldt a los escritos de los cronistas en general, y a Acosta en particular. La segunda parte es m{\´a}s interpretativa, y tiene su focus en un an{\´a}lisis de las semejanzas que se encuentran entre el concepto que aplica Humboldt en sus estudios y el modelo Historia Natural y Moral, con objeto de desarrollar c{\´o}mo Humboldt redescubre, usa y revaloriza este esquema.},

  abstract  = {This article treats Alexander von Humboldt as an Atlantic intellectual, not only as an european intellectual. The article tries to analize also the "Ensayo pol{\´i}tico sobre la Isla de Cuba" as a key text of the second globalization ("industrial revolution"). Against the background of our knowledge about the reality at the beginnings of the 19th century the article analizes the humboldtian presentation of this reality during his stay in Cuba (1801/1804), confronting it with his "Essay" about Cuba (1826-1831), as well tries to demonstrate the position of Humboldt in the historical thinking. The third part explains the relations of Humboldt to the network of Cuban intellectuals and with some important personalities of the Cuban elite (Arango, Calvo) in the development of his work.},

  abstract  = {In letters to trusted friends and in conversations Humboldt often showed an inclination to make fun of persons, institutions and situations. In most cases he did this tongue in cheek, rarely hurting people seriously. A special target of Humboldt's ironical remarks was the Prussian ministry of education and culture because of its animosity to the natural sciences which Humboldt wanted to promote. Often Humboldt expressed his frustration about narrow-mindedness and arrogance which he observed in his hometown of Berlin. Sometimes he had reasons to criticize the Prussian Academies of Sciences and of Arts. Humboldt had a fine sense of humor and many critical remarks can only be understood in the context in which they were made. The reader should therefore be warned, not to take any ironical or sarcastic characterization of a person or an institution literally.},

Hier und heute sei Humboldts fr{\"u}hes Interesse an der Anwendung der Botanik belegt, um dem Bev{\"o}lkerungswachstum, der Preissteigerung bei Lebensmitteln, der Zerr{\"u}ttung der Staatsfinanzen, dem einreißenden Mangel durch Erschließung neuer Nahrungsquellen, Nutzung ignorierter Naturkr{\"a}fte und Schaffung neuer Arbeitspl{\"a}tze zu steuern. Dabei beachtete Humboldt, nahezu noch ein Teenager, bereits {\"o}kologische Gesichtspunkte.},
