  abstract  = {In this article I argue that the kind of scientific naturalism that tends to underwrite projects of naturalizing religion operates with a tacit conception of nature which, upon closer inspection, turns out to be untenable. I first distinguish an uninteresting modest naturalism from the more ambitious and relevant scientific naturalism. Secondly I survey three different kinds of attempting to naturalize religion: naturalizing the social aspect of religion, naturalizing religious experience, and naturalizing reference to the transcendent. Thirdly I argue that these projects operate with a conception of nature which is insufficiently clear. I suggest three ways of charitably explicating that tacit conception of what is natural before arguing that neither of these three positions works. Lastly I offer an irenic proposal: we would do good in giving up the scientific naturalism that underlies projects of naturalizing religion in order to embrace Lynne Rudder Baker's recently proposed notion of near-naturalism which allows the naturalist to retain a 'science first' attitude while avoiding problematic, overly restrictive notions of what is natural.},

  abstract  = {This article describes the way of Conrado Balweg from the Tingguian-tribe in the Cordillera mountains/Philippines, who was educated in Catholic seminaries, entered a missionary congregation, was ordained priest and joined the communist insurgency New People's Army. There he quickly attained the rank of a political officer and military commander. Balweg held teachings on Marxism in remote villages, he organized several ambushes on government troops and conducted people's courts against traitors. Over time he developed a special indigenous Maoism and broke away from the party-line and, which was the reason why he was killed by the NPA in 1999. In a contextualized biographical portrait we track the question: How did Maoist thought become part of Balweg's conviction? As a hypothesis we assumed, that Maoist thought was integrated in Catholic tenets (e.g. interpreting God's will as the will of the masses). After a close analysis of intellectual backgrounds and political events it turned out, that Maoist ideology superseded religious motives instead. This is crucial to understand if violence was justified in the name of God or in the name of the people.},

The author Stefan Gatzhammer examines the view of the Jesuit, scientific and cardinal Franz Ehrle (1845-1934) on the Roman Question as the open conflict between Italy and the Holy See that worsened after the outbreak of the First World War. As redactor of the "Stimmen der Zeit", Franz Ehrle took up the public debate in Munich from 1916, which was attentively registered in Italy. In particular, the author examines how far Ehrle, with his pragmatic and legally justified proposal for a minimal territorial solution, can be seen as an intellectual author of the State of the Vatican City newly established in 1929 by the Lateran Treaties.},

  abstract  = {Objeto de esta investigaci{\´o}n es el auge y ca{\´i}da de una legitimaci{\´o}n teol{\´o}gica de la poes{\´i}a que tuvo lugar en el virreinato del Per{\´u} entre fines del siglo XVI y la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. Su punto c{\´u}lmine est{\´a} marcado por el surgimiento de una "Academia Ant{\´a}rtica" en las primeras d{\´e}cadas del siglo XVII, mientras que su fin, se aprecia a fines del mismo siglo, cuando eruditos de las {\´o}rdenes religiosas, especialmente Juan de Espinosa y Medrano en sus textos en defensa de la poes{\´i}a y las ciencias, negaron a la poes{\´i}a cualquier estatuto teol{\´o}gico, sirvi{\´e}ndose sin embargo de ella para escribir sus sermones y textos. A partir del auge y ca{\´i}da de esta legitimaci{\´o}n teol{\´o}gica en el virreinato del Per{\´u}, este estudio muestra la existencia de dos movimientos que forman un quiasmo entre una teologizaci{\´o}n de la poes{\´i}a y una poetizaci{\´o}n de la teolog{\´i}a, en cuyo centro velado se encuentra en disputa el saber te{\´o}rico y pr{\´a}ctico de la poes{\´i}a. Lo que est{\´a} en disputa en este sentido no es la poes{\´i}a, entendida como una cumbre de las bellas letras, sino la posesi{\´o}n leg{\´i}tima de un modo de lectura anal{\´o}gico y tipol{\´o}gico del orden del universo, fundado en las Sagradas Escrituras y en la historia de la salvaci{\´o}n, y un modo po{\´e}tico para doctrinar a todos los miembros de la sociedad virreinal en concordancia con aquel modo de lectura.},

  abstract  = {Cette {\´e}tude est consacr{\´e}e au portrait de Marguerite de Valois, surnomm{\´e}e la Reine Margot. En essayant de reconstruire ce portrait, on rencontre la difficult{\´e} que Marguerite de Valois, comme personnage historique qui a eu une biographie r{\´e}elle, est devenue un personnage "fictionalis{\´e}" et litt{\´e}raire. Pour cela, il est indispensable que l'{\´e}tude du portrait litt{\´e}raire prenne pour point de d{\´e}part le recours aux faits historiques. Il est {\´e}vident que l'histoire ne nous pr{\´e}sente que l'image incompl{\`e}te d'un personnage historique et qu'il n'existe pas de biographie compl{\`e}te qui m{\´e}rite ce nom. Les blancs laissent suffisamment de place aux mythes qui finissent par se d{\´e}tacher si profond{\´e}ment de la r{\´e}alit{\´e} que le portrait historique s'en trouve d{\´e}form{\´e} et d{\´e}figur{\´e} en un dispositif d'affects n{\´e}gatifs. Il est de notre propos de rendre sa dignit{\´e} {\`a} Marguerite de Valois et de ne pas laisser une des femmes les plus remarquables du XVIe si{\`e}cle se d{\´e}grader en simulacre. Cette contribution, en restant au plus pr{\`e}s des sources historiques de l'{\´e}poque, rel{\`e}ve quelques faits positifs pour remodeler un portrait d'une femme sup{\´e}rieure avant la lettre qui avait les vis{\´e}es hautes dans tous les domaines. L'{\´e}tude se comprend en tant qu'appel {\`a} la red{\´e}couverte d'un personnage historique au portrait brouill{\´e} et enfoui.},

The author Stefan Gatzhammer examines the view of the Jesuit, scientific and cardinal Franz Ehrle (1845-1934) on the Roman Question as the open conflict between Italy and the Holy See that worsened after the outbreak of the First World War. As redactor of the "Stimmen der Zeit", Franz Ehrle took up the public debate in Munich from 1916, which was attentively registered in Italy. In particular, the author examines how far Ehrle, with his pragmatic and legally justified proposal for a minimal territorial solution, can be seen as an intellectual author of the State of the Vatican City newly established in 1929 by the Lateran Treaties.},

  abstract  = {In this chapter, the author argues that Herder's theory of sympathy is informed by his educational practices as a teacher and preacher in Riga (1764 to 1769). In his Riga sermons, Herder develops a model of sympathy that transforms classical rhetorics insofar as it describes the sermon as a mutual interaction between preacher and congregation, thus emphasizing the decisive role of the listening public. This model is informed not only by Herder's theological, but also by his anthropological and aesthetic reflections in the Riga constellation: Sermon and service are conceptualized as the ideal sphere of observing the 'modus operandi' of human feeling and cognition—and of cultivating it at the same time. Within the overarching framework of sympathy, the preacher has to develop specific techniques of "pathos" to activate the senses of his audience and particular ways of empathy to understand its feelings. Most explicitly, Herder develops this model of preaching in his farewell-sermon from Riga in 1769. At the same time, this sermon shows that homiletics are embedded within the specific social and cultural milieus that Herder encounters in German and Latvian congregations in Riga. Last but not least, his farewell-sermon is a medium to defend himself and his concept of preaching against antipathy-driven attacks from local Orthodox-Lutheran clergy.},
