All of these ventures included the municipalization of substantial sets of tasks. As elsewhere, governments argue that service delivery by communes is more cost-efficient, effective and responsive. Empirical evidence to back these claims is inconsistent at best: a considerable number of case studies cast doubt on unconditionally positive appraisals. Decentralization effects seem to vary depending on the performance dimension and task considered. However, questions of generalizability arise as these findings have not yet been backed by more 'objective' archival data. We provide empirical evidence on decentralization effects for two different policy fields based on two studies. Thereby, the article presents alternative avenues for research on decentralization effects and matches the theoretical expectations on decentralization effects with more robust results. The analysis confirms that overly positive assertions concerning decentralization effects are only partially warranted. As previous case studies suggested, effects have to be looked at in a much more differentiated way, including starting conditions and distinguishing between the various relevant performance dimensions and policy fields.}, language = {en} } @article{Eckardt2003, author = {Eckardt, Sebastian}, title = {The Asian financial crisis : Crisis, reform and recovery}, issn = {0305-8298}, year = {2003}, language = {en} } @article{EcksteinMuster2021, author = {Eckstein, Bernd and Muster, Judith}, title = {Postb{\"u}rokratie und die agile Unsicherheitsabsorption in Interaktionen}, series = {Gruppe, Interaktion, Organisation. Postbureaucracy tries to conceptualize organizational and societal changes throughout the second half of the 20th century. Agile management frameworks that multiply interactions between members of an organization can be treated as a phenomenon of postbureaucratic organizing. Drawing on systems theory this paper examines how postbureaucratic reforms trigger new uncertainties and how they are tackled by agile concepts of management. We will illustrate this by analyzing the agile concepts Scrum and Holacracy and show how relocation triggers new needs for formalization. Doing this we will focus on how interdependencies of communication in systems of interaction are centered in different dimensions. This paper advocates for a perspective on postbureaucracy in terms of functional equivalence to grasp the connection between the renouncement of formalization and the emergence of new needs for formalization.}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2007, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Management und Managerialismus im {\"o}ffentlichen Unternehmen}, isbn = {978-3-932112-92-8}, year = {2007}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2004, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Einleitung : was l{\"a}sst sich von Wissenssteuerung und Wissensmanagement erwarten?}, isbn = {3-8100-3538-6}, year = {2004}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2006, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Die Institution der {\"o}ffentlichen Wirtschaft}, isbn = {3-89404-776-3}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2003, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Rollenverst{\"a}ndnis des Managements im kommunalen Unternehmen}, year = {2003}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2006, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Organisation}, isbn = {3-531-13756-5}, year = {2006}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2002, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Organisationen als Institutionen}, year = {2002}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2001, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Privatisierung oder Kommunalisierung : die Entstaatlichung lokaler Versorgungsunternehmen}, year = {2001}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2000, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Kommunale Unternehmen zwischen Marktliberalisierung und {\"o}ffentlichem Auftrag}, year = {2000}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling2002, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Stadtwerke zwischen Markt und Politik}, year = {2002}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling1999, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Einf{\"u}hrung : Der neue Institutionalismus in {\"O}konomie und Soziologie}, year = {1999}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling1998, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Economic and sociological institutionalism in organization theory : two sides of the same coin?}, year = {1998}, language = {en} } @article{Edeling1998, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Selbs- und Fremdsteuerung {\"o}ffentlicher Unternehmen}, year = {1998}, language = {de} } @article{Edeling1998, author = {Edeling, Thomas}, title = {Eine Firma - Education, Opportunity, and Social Inequality: Changing Prospects in Western Society. New York: Wiley.), social origin strongly affects educational decisions, especially at transition points in educational attainment. In Japan, the fierce competition in gaining access to the next level of schooling intensifies the impact of educational decisions on students' future careers. In addition to selecting a certain school, families are forced to decide whether or not to invest in shadow education. Thus far, socioeconomic background and parents' educational aspirations, in conjunction with students' academic achievement, have been deemed influential to such decisions in Japan. The agency of the student is rarely even considered. Based on calculations from the 2011 Hyogo High School Students' (HHSS) survey, the theoretical approach presented in this article stresses the importance of acknowledging the existence of a multitude of actors involved in each phase of the decision-making process, including the students themselves, especially when explaining inequalities in modern societies.}, language = {en} }
