  abstract  = {After the Second World War, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were singled out as evil geniuses who misled the masses and plunged them into an "unwanted war." In relation to their armed forces, this narrative argued that the generals under their command had been demoted to powerless tools in the hands of the dictators, having to follow orders and with no sway over decision-making. It was further asserted that Germany and Italy had not been able to secure a victory due to the dictators' meddling. Yet, as this chapter shows, there are important differences between the German and Italian cases. The chapter compares both the command structures in which the dictators operated as well as their grand strategies and how they cooperated during the war. Their personal relationship will be also analyzed, as it is impossible to look at the Axis without understanding the complex personal relationship at the very top. The strategies of both Hitler and Mussolini will be looked at and how each leader behaved in terms of working with their closest ally, together with some examples of cooperation on the lower military rungs.},

  abstract  = {This article examines scenes of Zeitungslekt{\"u}re (newspaper reading) in some exemplary Fontane novels to reconstruct them as a serial narrative pattern that fills specific narrative functions similar to other narrative patterns such as letter writing or country excursions (Landpartien) which have often been shown to be typical for Fontane's novels. These newspaper scenes can be read as multifaceted culmination points at the surface of the novel's story in which aspects of Fontane's writing practices, formal aspects (characterization of figures, narrative temporalities, narrative structure), autopoietic reflection as well as addresses to the readers are brought into a complex interplay. The newspaper-reading scenes are thus significant textual signals of what has been called Fontane's specific Zeitungspoetik. The argument is unfolded by examining examples from three different genres: the historical novel Unwiederbringlich, the "Berlin everyday novels" ("Berliner Alltagsgeschichten") Irrungen, Wirrungen and Mathilde M{\"o}hring, and the Zeitroman or political novel Der Stechlin.},

  abstract  = {Der Arbeitskreis Milit{\"a}r und Gesellschaft in der Fr{\"u}hen Neuzeit e. V. wurde im Fr{\"u}hjahr 1995 gegr{\"u}ndet. Er hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die Erforschung des Milit{\"a}rs im Rahmen der fr{\"u}hneuzeitlichen Geschichte zu bef{\"o}rdern und zugleich das Bewusstsein der Fr{\"u}hneuzeit-HistorikerInnen f{\"u}r die Bedeutung des Milit{\"a}rs in all seinen Funktionen zu wecken. Das Milit{\"a}r steht somit als soziale Gruppe selbst im Mittelpunkt der Aktivit{\"a}ten des Arbeitskreises, wird aber auch in seinen Wirkungen und Repr{\"a}sentationen thematisiert. Ziel ist es, die Rolle des Milit{\"a}rs als Teil der fr{\"u}hneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft umfassend herauszuarbeiten und zu w{\"u}rdigen. Insofern versteht der AMG seine Arbeit nicht nur als Beitrag zur Milit{\"a}rgeschichte, sondern vor allem als Beitrag zur Geschichte der Fr{\"u}hen Neuzeit insgesamt.   abstract  = {In diesem Band erm{\"o}glicht Mario Kaun ausgew{\"a}hlte Einblicke in die Lebenswelt der Cottbuser Exklavengesellschaft des 18. Jahrhunderts. Erstmalig erscheint hiermit f{\"u}r diesen Untersuchungsraum eine grundlegende Studie, die in umfassender Weise die Exklave und das Verh{\"a}ltnis von Milit{\"a}r und Gesellschaft n{\"a}her erforscht sowie die wirtschaftliche Funktion der Garnison in einer aufstrebenden Stadt kritisch hinterfragt. Der Autor lenkt hierbei das Augenmerk auf etliche, bisher v{\"o}llig unbekannte Perspektiven, die dar{\"u}ber hinaus einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Stadt- und Regionalgeschichtsforschung von Cottbus und der Niederlausitz leisten.
