Primary Publication - Golden Road
The Golden Road of unrestricted access to scientific and scholarly information is one of the main Roads to Open Access publishing. It involves the primary publication of an article in an Open Access journal or the publication of an Open Access monograph. Open Access publishing makes use of various ways of peer-review in order to ensure high scholarly and scientific quality according to discipline-specific conventions. Journals that meet the defined academic quality requirements are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
Open Access publications are freely available worldwide and free of charge. Articles may be downloaded, copied, printed, distributed or used in any other way – the correct and visible naming of the source and author provided. Open Access publishers frequently impose publication fees, so-called article-processing charges. As a rule, publication costs are covered by the author or the respective editing body.
Moreover, Open Access publishing allows for standardized open licenses that can be awarded to users. Standardized open licenses are considered as an ideal means to legally ensure extended use of scholarly and scientific information as pronounced in the 2003 Berlin Declaration on Open Access.
