Open Access Licenses

Copyright law and its strict usage and exploitation regulations have turned out a major obstacle to the distribution and re-use of research results. By assigning a Creative Commons License, authors may deviate from selected copyright rules when publishing their work Open Access. This helps to diminish knowledge barriers in science and research.

German science organizations released an appeal to use open licenses in science and research. A worldwide scientifically accepted standard for the re-use of research results, open licenses enhance the visibility, re-usability as well as the fast distribution of knowledge. Promoting innovation, open licenses thus make a major contribution to good scientific practice. According to German science organizations, open licenses are an ideal tool to ensure extensive and lawfully secured use of scientific content. The use of Creative Commons Licenses is recommend for various publication types, such as text publications, scientific software or meta data.

Usage rights can be assigned individually by using standardized licenses. The author's moral rights (i.e. authorship itself), is not affected by a Creative Commons License, so the author has to be given credit upon every use and thus be cited correctly. You can choose a license when registering your publication.

Please note:
You can only assign a Creative Commons License if you own the respective rights. In case you assigned exclusive usage rights to a publisher for contributions from a publication-based dissertation or habilitation thesis, and also received single permission to publish a journal article from your dissertation online, you may publish it on our publication server. However, you are not entitled to assign a Creative Commons License.

If a Creative Commons License is assigned to your work, a link on the starting page of an electronic resource, or in the imprint of a print document, will lead directly to the valid and legally binding license. Furthermore, central aspects and conditions of the license chosen will be displayed in short form, e.g.
Creative Commons - Attribution ShareAlike CC BY-SA 4.0".

If you wish to publish your work on the Publication Server, you can choose from the following licenses:
