• Die Bekanntschaft zwischen Leopold von Buch und Johann Wolfgang von Goethe war von Missverständnissen und Skepsis dem jeweils anderen gegenüber geprägt. Persönliche Gespräche über geologische Themen scheiterten, Briefe wurden verspätet abgeschickt oder kamen nicht an. Goethe lehnte den „Ultravulkanisten“ Buch ab, Buch Goethe als geologisch wenig kompetent. So endete beider Begegnung in Gesprächsverweigerung, zweideutigen Komplimenten und einer Korrespondenz von insgesamt nur zwei Briefen, die hier wiedergegeben werden.

Personal discussions on geological topics failed, letters were dispatched late or did not reach the addressee. Goethe refused Buch as an “ultra-volcanist,” Buch labelled Goethe as incompetent. The failed encounter issued in a correspondence of just two letters presented here.
• Les échanges entre Leopold von Buch et Johann Wolfgang von Goethe forment une histoire remplie de malentendus, de scepticisme et de refus qui se caractérise notamment par des entretiens avortés sur des sujets géologiques ou des lettres égarées. Goethe rejetait en bloc les positions «ultra-volcanistes » de son collègue, tandis que ce dernier considérait Goethe comme un savant peu compétent. La confrontation entre les deux hommes aboutissait par conséquent toujours à une récusation réciproque. De ces échanges demeurent encore deux lettres qui se trouvent présentées dans les pages qui suivent.
