• Die Amerikanischen Reisetagebücher stellen eine Herausforderung für die Erforschung historischer Epistemologie dar. Der vorliegende Aufsatz will ausgehend vom Scheitern einer eindeutigen gattungsgeschichtlichen Zuschreibung die Sonderstellung der Bände als Instrumente der Erfahrung herausarbeiten, welche an der Schwelle zum 19. Jh. den ontologischen Optimismus sowie das methodische Tasten eines Wissenschaftlers, Schriftstellers und Forschungsreisenden in subjektbezogener Form zugänglich machen. Gerade der multifunktionale Charakter der ‚Journale‘ als Log- bzw. Reisetagebücher und Skizzenhefte, die noch weit entfernt von der Ordnung wissenschaftlichen Schreibens scheinen, lassen jene Voraussetzungen wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisprozesse sichtbar werden, mithilfe derer Humboldt innerhalb der kantschen Koordinaten Raum und Zeit einen ‚Rhythmus‘ situativ verarbeiteter Natur- und Welterfahrung in ein dynamisches Speichermedium einfließen lässt.
• Les Journaux de Voyage Américains lancent un défi aux études de l’épistémologie historique. Basé sur l’échec d’une attribution explicite à un genre littéraire bien défini, cet essai veut souligner la position exceptionnelle des volumes comme instruments d’expérience, lesquels, à l’aube du 19ème siècle, donnent accès à l’optimisme ontologique, ainsi qu’à l’échantillonnage méthodologique d’un écrivain, scientifique et explorateur, qui devient manifeste comme sujet découvrant. D’une part, le caractère multifonctionnel des cahiers comme journaux de bord, journaux de voyage et carnets de croquis semble un éloignement de l’ordre formel d’une écriture scientifique, d’autre part, ce caractère dévoile les conditions préalables pour les processus épistémologiques qui conduisent à connaissances scientifiques. Dans les coordonnés kantiennes de l’espace et du temps, Humboldt semble suivre son propre rythme épistémologique d’expérience de la situation, qui concerne la nature et le monde à coup d’un moyen de stockage dynamique.
• The American Travel Diaries represent a challenge for the studies of historical epistemology. Based on the failure of their explicit attribution to a well-defined literary genre, this paper wants to emphasize the exceptional position of the volumes as instruments of experience, which, at the dawn of the 19th century, grant access to the ontological optimism, as well as to the methodological sampling of a scientist, writer and explorer, who becomes manifest as experiencing subject. On the one hand, the multi-functional character of the Diaries as log-, travel- and sketchbooks seems to distance them from the formal order of scientific writing, on the other hand, they unveil the prerequisites for epistemological processes that lead to scientific knowledge. Within the Kantian coordinates of space and time, Humboldt seems to follow his own epistemological rhythm of situational experience concerning nature and world by means of a dynamic storage medium.
