Parlache as an evocative element of fictional orality in the novel Rosario Tijeras, by Jorge Franco

  • The present dissertation aims to analyse how the reality of spoken language is evoked in the novel Rosario Tijeras, by the Colombian writer Jorge Franco, and its German and English translations. In this thriller, Franco uses a colloquial language called parlache, which originated in a deprived socio-economic area of Medellín and has spread not only across the city but across the whole country. First of all, this study will focus on the description of diatopic and diastratic variation in fiction—specifically, typical expressions from the so-called parlache. Thus, this investigation aims to establish how some typical linguistic features of this variety of Spanish contribute to the construction of a believable spoken dialogue, as well as how this “local colour” evokes orality, and how it is depicted in the German and English translations. Therefore, this study will analyse translation divergences and the description of linguistic variation (diatopic and diastratic) in literary translation.
